[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 534229] Re: Xorg crashes randomly

2010-03-09 Thread Mikko Hurskainen
This happened today once more, now only 2 mins after logging in and
using Firefox. Strange thing this time was that Xorg.0.log.old did not
contain any backtrace. Just upgraded new packages this morning.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 529563] Re: Lucid Alpha3 live cd failing to boot properly, monitor powers off during boot.

2010-03-09 Thread risk
I've been trying to boot my workstation off of network, the screen goes into
powersaving mode. I can see it change mode for a second before it goes dark.
I don't know whether the rest of my workstation works, I presume it doesn't
(this also happened to me during a routine upgrade, before which nouveau used
to work perfectly, and afterwards I couldn't ssh in, or use nfs, whereas before
I normally could).

I suspect that it has something to do with nouveau drivers.

I tried lucid alpha 3 amd64, and then lucid daily amd64, both have the same
result.
Kernel options I use are pretty generic:

LABEL ubuntu-live-1004-amd64
  kernel ubuntu-live-1004-amd64/vmlinuz
  append initrd=ubuntu-live-1004-amd64/initrd.lz boot=casper netboot=nfs
nfsroot=192.168.0.1:/mnt/ubuntu-live-1004-amd64 --

I am able to boot the 9.10 amd64 just fine. (granted without nouveau).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 531594] Re: xorg crash failed to map pixmap -85

2010-03-09 Thread Bryce Harrington
Well, this error message is produced inside the xserver-xorg-video-
radeon driver, but it seems to occur due to a fault in the libdrm
radeon_bo_map() call. My best guess is something going wrong deeper
down in the kernel drm.

The kernel team is rolling out a new -16 kernel which contains a
backport of the .33 drm. When you get a chance, please install and test
this kernel and report back here whether it's still an issue or not.
Meanwhile I'm reassigning this to the kernel tagged as a drm bug.

2010-03-09 Thread risk
On an additional note, this system used to work fine with nouveau running one
30 and an additional rotated 24 with compositing enabled and all the bling.
I will continue to test non-live images and I might try i386.

Are there any kernel options I can try out.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 533639] Re: Samsung SyncMaster 920N monitor resolution not correctly detected

2010-03-09 Thread Bryce Harrington
Yes, sounds likely to be a broken monitor emitting incorrect EDID
information. It looks like you're using a configuration where
modesetting is done by the kernel rather than X so reassigning to the
kernel. Probably there is a quirk for your monitor in the xserver which
wasn't taken into the kernel.

The steps for troubleshooting this class of problem are well documented
at http://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/ on the Troubleshooting and Quirks guides;
in particular you should gather an EDID dump. The docs explain some
common issues with monitor EDID that you can examine.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 528432] Re: X crashes and restarts with *ERROR* Failed to pin buffer 4 of 17

2010-03-09 Thread Tommy Brander
I installed the PPA and didn't had a single crash - until I tested
upgrading to the new Lucid kernel: Linux Pisces 2.6.32-16-generic
#24-Ubuntu SMP Sat Mar 6 12:32:35 UTC 2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux.

It took X 35 minutes to crash :).

So I think we safely can assume that my bug is fixed in the newer
kernel. But what do I do know? Will there be an official backport to
Lucid, or is I forced to compile my own kernel?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 533742] Re: Xorg crashed while typing into web page form

2010-03-09 Thread Bryce Harrington
None of the files included in your report show any evidence of a crash.
If you're seeing a crash, you need to collect a full backtrace. If
you're not seeing a crash but actually an X freeze, then you need to
collect a GPU dump. In theory apport should do this for you
automatically; if not for some reason, it can be done automatically -
see relevant pages at http://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/.

It's also possible you're just seeing bug #532047 which is actually
caused by plymouth, but your terse problem description makes it hard to
judge. Review that bug and if it does sound like your issue, you can
work around it by disabling or uninstalling plymouth.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 534129] Re: Lucid 2.6.32-16 crash while entering bug report - Failed to submit batchbuffer: Input/output error

2010-03-09 Thread Bryce Harrington
Thanks Jerry, we actually use the same apport hook for xorg-server as
for all the other X components, so ubuntu-bug xorg-server would not
provide any different information than you've already provided.

The bug seems to not actually be a crash but rather an abnormal xserver
exit, with an error message, Failed to submit batchbuffer: Input/output
error. This sounds like a bug in the kernel drm.

Could you confirm that you can produce this reliably on the -16 kernel
but not the -15 kernel?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 534229] Re: Xorg crashes randomly (pae kernel)

2010-03-09 Thread Bryce Harrington
For crash reports we need to have a full backtrace collected. This is
often done automatically by apport, but I don't know why it's not
catching it in your case. Guidance for collecting full backtraces
manually can be found at http://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Backtracing.

(P.S., it's a good idea to avoid using the word 'randomly' in bug
titles.)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 201032] Re: DPI not set or incorrectly set to 96

2010-03-09 Thread Bryce Harrington
These LPL monitors are known for having busted EDID values, I recall a
number of quirks for them was added to the xserver. However since
you're using kernel modesetting, I think maybe some of those quirks did
not get ported over to the kernel, thus you're seeing the regression.
IIRC, at one point seb128 added an override to force dpi to 96x96 in
GNOME, which is why it started working.

Anyway, now that this code is in the kernel, I'm reassigning to linux.
They can check if your quirk has been included in the kernel now.

Kiri, unless you have the same LPL monitor as in the original report,
you should be filing a separate bug report.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 495082] Re: Changing from default user to guest session and back crashes gdm

2010-03-09 Thread Bryce Harrington
Hi Ara, it looks like this crash is occuring in libpixman although it's
unclear from the X trace what routines were being called. Are you still
able to reproduce this issue on current Lucid? If so please collect a
full backtrace after reproducing the issue - see
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Backtracing for guidance. If not, then this
bug can be closed. It sounds quite similar to another one I
investigated a couple months ago that is now solved, but hard to say for
certain.

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: gdm

  Steps to reproduce:

- * Log in with the default user

would appear as logged in) and select the default user
- * Without closing the session, again, go to Guest Session
- * Without closing the Guest Session, again, go to Switch User (the default
user would appear as logged in) and select the default user. GDM crashes.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 534469] Re: Failed to load NVIDIA 195.36.08 kernel modules because nouveau is loading.

2010-03-09 Thread Roman Yepishev
Hello Carlos,

Is your /usr partition on a separate drive?
If it is then you should probably see 'WARNING: Failed to open config file
nvidia-graphics-drivers.conf: No such file or directory. This actually means
that / got mounted with /etc/modprobe.d/nvidia-graphics-drivers.conf pointing
to /etc/alternatives/nvidia_modconf which in turn pointed to
/usr/lib/nvidia-current/modprobe.conf but /usr was not yet mounted at that time.

The workaround is to remove the symlink /etc/modprobe.d/nvidia-graphics-
drivers.conf and copy the contents of /usr/lib/nvidia-
current/modprobe.conf to /etc/modprobe.d/nvidia-graphics-drivers.conf
as a regular file, i.e.:

# rm /etc/modprobe.d/nvidia-graphics-drivers.conf
# cp /usr/lib/nvidia-current/modprobe.conf
/etc/modprobe.d/nvidia-graphics-drivers.conf

Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 348914] Re: Display intermittently fails on login with Samsung 205BW

2010-03-09 Thread Rob Watson

Dear Bryce,

Thank you for your email.

The bug us still an issue (I am now using 9.10) although it is somewhat
different behaviour than when I first reported it. Note it only occurs
upon power-up or reboot, so I tend to leave my PC on standby each time
so the display is guaranteed and this is my work-around.

The symptoms are on power-up that in say 30% of cases it struggles to
'see ' the display (other times it does work OK but takes longer than it
should). When it fails, the monitor either remains dark or sometimes
has a fine 'snow' affect akin to fine white noise (desktop icons all
present). It then tries to recover by 'blanking off' display drivers
for a few sec's and tries again. It either recovers after sometime (e.g
a couple of minutes) OR I grow impatient and switch off monitor and on
again (which only helps occasionally) or reboot.

I recall reading on a forum that this was due to the way the Samsung 205
reported its state, if I can find this page I will forward link.

When I return to my office (I am away) I will forward the Xorg file as
requested.

Thanks again (and despite hiccups, I am sold on Linux and Ubuntu!)

Regards,

Rob

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu

with the latest development release of Ubuntu? (ISO CD images are available

If it remains an issue, could you also attach a new /var/log/Xorg.0.log?
 Thanks in advance.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 535010] Re: [gm45] GPU lockup during MI_WAIT_FOR_EVENT Display Pipe B Scan Line Window Wait Enable (0x01800020)

2010-03-09 Thread Geir Ove Myhr
Thank you for reporting this bug. There has been a major update of the kernel
code responsible from the graphics execution, so could you do one of the
following:
1. (easy for you, hopefully good enough for upstream)
Update to kernel 2.6.32-16 (and any other updates to get an updated Lucid).
File a new bug report the same way as you did with this if it is still present.
2. (a little harder, better for troubleshooting)
Install and boot the newest mainline kernel drm-intel-next from [1] (see [2]
for instructions). Reproduce the problem. ssh into the computer and copy the
file /sys/kernel/debug/dri/0/i915_error_state. File a bug report the same way
as you did with this if it is still present (I guess it pops up next time you
boot). Attach the copied i915_error_state to the bug report (it may be
different from the i915_error_state that is automatically uploaded).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 456637] Re: Please consider turning powermizer OFF

2010-03-09 Thread Cyberkilla
There have been several releases of the nVidia driver that have this
issue for me.

The only way to get it working in linux is to disable powermizer. It
works perfectly fine with the latest Vista video driver.

I have an nVidia GeForce 8400M GT btw.

NACK, no need to change the packaging that much. Check

Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 440233] Re: fglrx fails at startup because of missing amdpcsdb.default + removal leaves bad settings in Xorg.conf

2010-03-09 Thread Bryan Smith
I run a system with a Sapphire HD5750 graphics card. I have the latest
drivers which I downloaded from the ATI site installed on my system.
Each time a new kernal comes down (like tonight) the graphics on my
system stop working and my system becomes unusable.

What I have to do is uninstall the ATI drivers (I do this in recovery
mode), and then reinstall the ATI drivers from the ATI site. (I take
this opportunity to get and install the most recent version of the drivers.)

Someone out there more knowledgeable about the Linux kernel may be able
to advise why a new kernel breaks the ATI drivers.

Hope this helps.

Bryan

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 534634] Re: Removing nvidia-current causes black screen (display turns off) during boot

2010-03-09 Thread Harry
Daniel
Did you remove the file /etc/X11/xorg.conf
or at least removed the lines pointing to NVidia proprietary drivers?

Reinstalling nvidia-current should not work unless you run the command:
nvidia-xconfig
That command will edit the xorg.conf file.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 365994] Re: [i915] X freeze due to end of aperture kernel issue

2010-03-09 Thread Milan Bouchet-Valat
Yes, the freeze still exists in Karmic, but it comes from another bug.
I'm marking this one as Fix Released for Linux, since a fix was released
via Intel X.org/Linux developers. I've continued tracking the problem
upstream, and you can have a look at
http://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=26974 if you are interested.
But that's a new report about a different bug.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 535027] [NEW] X bug during boot == Ctrl+Alt+F1==Ctrl+Alt+F7

2010-03-09 Thread winniemiel05
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

I think the package linked to this bug is xorg, but I'm not sure.

During some boots ( no logical reasons why only some of them), I'va a black
screen(sometime some text), instead of plymouth, then gdm.
The only way I found to escape this was to press Ctrl+Alt+F1, then Ctrl+Alt+F7.
This happen with Lucid 64 bits, with ubuntu drivers ( I can't install
propiretary drivers), but it happened too on Karmic with proprietary drivers.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 534047] Re: Flickering when wathcing videos with Nvidia drivers in Lucid

2010-03-09 Thread mirix
I have just installed Debian testing (2.6.32-trunk-amd64 SMP) with XFCE4
and all the issues are fixed:

1) No more video or audio flickering.

2) nvidia-settings reports the correct power source, either battery or
AC power.

3) Performance levels are adjusted as required, from 0 to 3, by
Powermizer.

NOTE: I installed NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-195.30-pkg2.run manually (compiled
with gcc-4.3 instead of the system's default 4.4). No tweaking or
configuration was required. Everything just works. I have only added the
NoLogo option.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 535026] Re: [i965gm] GPU lockup during MI_WAIT_FOR_EVENT Display Pipe A Scan Line Window Wait Enable (0x01800002)

2010-03-09 Thread Geir Ove Myhr
Since this happened during apport-collect 526367 I assume you first:
1) Power off and close Laptop (T61 or x61)
2) Place laptop in docking station
3) Turn on laptop via docking station power button
4) Login and start a session
5) Press the undock button
6) Remove laptop from docking station, laptop will suspend
7) Resume laptop, but it will go back to sleep (not subject of this bug report)
8) Resume laptop second time
9) Laptop built-in display will stay black

There is a similar report at bug 535010, which also involves undocking,
so this may be the key.

cross privilege boundaries nor directly cause loss of data/privacy.

2010-03-09 Thread Christopher
This happened on my laptop - the previous report was for my desktop. I
was running Firefox, Thunderbird and PopTray (a Wine app) when the
display started to shake. A few moments later - a (pale) blue screen of
death!

I was unable to get into a terminal, but Ctrl+Alt+Delete rebooted the
system.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 440233] Re: fglrx fails at startup because of missing amdpcsdb.default + removal leaves bad settings in Xorg.conf

2010-03-09 Thread Felix Kuehling
@Bryan Smith:

Uninstall fglrx, install dkms, reinstall fglrx.

# /usr/share/ati/fglrx-uninstall.sh
# apt-get install dkms
# ati-driver-installer-...run

DKMS will automatically rebuild the fglrx kernel module every time the
kernel gets updated. That should solve your problem.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 535142] [NEW] 82815.i810 with GDM: endless loop of logins

2010-03-09 Thread Dave Rohde
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

This seems similar to the i845/Karmic bugs above.
I have an 82815 controller with an i810 card using a Gateway ev910monitor.
Up until now this has never happened with an install of Ubuntu.
When using the GDM at 1280:1024 resolution, regardless if the GL support is
installed or not installed, the login screen continues to loop back to the
initial name input level a various number of times. Trying different input
methods like other and using the abbreviated name instead of the full name
appears to work but not always. The loop continues as many as a dozen or more
times or as little as 2 or three times. In order to circumvent this I installed
the XDM and performed reconfigure of the GDM using the xterm in the panel at
the base of the login screen. There seemed to be no gripe about the xterm
screen except it was really tiny and up and off to the left. The XDM had no
issues on login and gave me a huge old Welcome to Debian Panel which seemed to
have no issues.
The message I get has various numbers at the front which change for each loop
but the following part of the message when looping is always the
same.i810_Wait_Ring: Lockup *ERROR* space 65520 wanted 65528.

I removed the xorg package as it kept having the libdrm-radeon1 and the
libgl1-mesa-dri after the situation got worse.
It does seem to want to call the i910 instead of the i810.

** Affects: xserver-xorg-video-intel (Ubuntu)
