Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 528488] Re: [drm] failed to load kernel module nouveau

2010-03-10 Thread Duncan Sands
Sorry; there was an error in the apport scripts that prevented them from
attaching the proper information to this bug. They have now been fixed.
 Could you please re-run “apport-collect 528488”?

after yesterdays updates, this problem has gone away, so please feel free
to close.

The workaround didn't worked for me. It fixes the problem only a few
seconds after the system startup, when i can press 2 or enter as often
as i want. But a few (minutes) later, hitting enter crashes the system
again (for only one time).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 534754] Re: X crashes during suspend/resume

2010-03-10 Thread Rocko
Ah, the page Bryce directed me to was all about obtaining backtraces in
the first place.

I ran apport-collect (apport-bug expects a pid, not the bug number), but
it reports it has nothing further to add. The console says:

Package xorg-server not installed and no hook available, ignoring

It's true that dpkg doesn't list any entries for xorg-server. Is the
assigned package for this bug wrong? Should it be xserver-xorg?

I have a similar issue. After a while X freezes up and nothing works on
the graphics part, but behind for instance I can log in into the machine
using OpenSSH. I tried disabling the DRM with nomodeset but still the
drm, i915 modules are loaded into the kernel (I tried to blacklist them
also) and the issue remains. My video controller is VGA compatible

and the computer is a HP rp5000 model and the OS is Ubuntu Karmic Koala.
Because of this random freeze ups the machine is unusable for work. Is
there some workaround that solves this issue? Thank you!

P.S. I read all the comments on this bug and tried most of them except
package updates (I'm very conservative about those methods because this
is my work machine).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 532845] Re: [Lucid] Option NoTrapSignals ignored when debugging xserver

2010-03-10 Thread Bryce Harrington

@ogerlich - thanks for providing that info, but we would like to see it from
the original reporter. We may want to send this bug report upstream, but
upstream has a hard and fast rule that logs from someone other than the
original reporter are not acceptable. The reason for that is that quite often
with X.org bug reports, two people may *think* they have the same issue based
on commonality of symptoms and/or hardware, but in truth they have separate
issues and mixing the report and the files can cause the developers some
confusion.

If this bug report seems not to be getting attention, I would encourage
you to file a new bug report with this data, and simply reference this
bug report in your bug description.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 535653] [NEW] System freeze during X start-up and while X is running, but only on battery.

2010-03-10 Thread Robert Hoegerl
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

Dear developer community,

My freshly installed and fully updated 10.04 alpha 3 works perfectly
fine on my ThinkPad X100e whenever I am on AC power, however, it
immediately freezes entirely whenever on battery and X is running.

What I tried already:

* tail -f /var/log/syslog: just stops on the freeze, no new line appears,
not useful.
* acpi=off in grub: no change
* disabled various things on start-up in /etc/rc2.d but no change

Finally, I disabled GDM on start-up and, voila, it worked, no more crashes, but
of course also no X anymore. After logging in on the console, the system
crashes again on start gdm.

Thanks, great job guys!!

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 535142] Re: 82815.i810 with GDM: endless loop of logins

2010-03-10 Thread Bryce Harrington
Hi Dave,

Please attach the output of `lspci -vvnn` and `dmesg`, and attach your
/var/log/Xorg.0.log (and maybe Xorg.0.log.old) file from after reproducing this
issue. If you're using a custom /etc/X11/xorg.conf please attach that as well.

[This is an automated message. Apologies if it has reached you
inappropriately; please just reply to this message indicating so.]

Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 533642] Re: [drm] failed to load kernel module nouveau (NV43 [GeForce 6600 GT])

2010-03-10 Thread Daniel Hahler
Your apport data indicates that you have the nvidia-current package
installed, which provides the binary nvidia drivers. If the binary
drivers are activated, nouveau will not work.

Ok. I've purged nvidia-current and nvidia-glx-185 now.

Did you disable the restricted drivers in System→Administration→Hardware
 Drivers before trying nouveau?

No. I cannot find such a menu entry/module in Kubuntu. What's the command to
execute it in a non-Gnome DE?
And what will it do, apart from purging the packages maybe?

If you remove them, does nouveau now work?

I'll try this later.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 532047] Re: Plymouth text-mode splash causes X to crash on first run due to shared tty7

2010-03-10 Thread ManhattanOS
I believe it may be related to the most recent kernel (2.6.32-16), as
before I updated to this kernel, I never experienced this issue, but
afterwards, I will login from GDM only to have it reset and I have to
enter my password again. Sometimes it doesn't even go to the GDM screen,
but it shows a TTY screen with strange characters.

2010-03-10 Thread papukaija
Sorry, those logs are already uploaded (and they include your graphic
card's name). The bug comes probably from your graphic card's driver.
So, the question is, what nvidia driver do you use (nvidia-glx-96 or
newer) ?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 456902] Re: [i845g] Karmic stops responding a few minutes after log in

2010-03-10 Thread Brian Rogers
Flabdablet, any console switching issues are most likely separate bugs
that have already been fixed in newer versions. Only random freezing
during general use is important. Do you see that with my current Jaunty
PPA packages?

crazybyte, the best workaround is probably using nomodeset and setting
vesa as your video driver in xorg.conf.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 532047] Re: Plymouth text-mode splash causes X to crash on first run due to shared tty7

2010-03-10 Thread John S. Gruber
Madde, Matteo: I've had both the login problem, and the later Enter or
2 problem. The difficulty is the keyboard scancodes, so different
keyboards can have different triggers if the keyboards have different
scancode assignments.

Whenever it happens later, it seems that my crashed X session had been
on tty1 (VT1) rather than on tty7 (VT7) or higher. I suspect this
symptom might involve the getty program (and maybe plymouth as well).

If your /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old file is still around from the crash I
wonder if you could check the beginning of the file to see on what VT X
had started (and save it somewhere for possible posting later)?

I've had trouble reproducing the VT1/late crash problem since
uninstalling and reinstalling plymouth, but as I typed this reply the
first time a few minutes ago X crashed when I typed 2. (Whew!). I
checked my session and it had started on tty1 and thus had been
vulnerable to whatever getty had been doing to tty1.

There are reports on the situation with late (after the problem key had
previously been pressed in an X session--login or after) in LP: #529230.
In both my case, and the case of the original reporter, X had started on
tty1 (VT1). I don't know about the new case.

I wonder if this late crash problem is related to the situation closed
for karmic in LP: #396226.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 532047] Re: Plymouth text-mode splash causes X to crash on first run due to shared tty7

2010-03-10 Thread pablomme
Interesting.
- My Xorg.0.log.old file says that X session --which crashed-- was running on
VT7.
- The current Xorg.0.log file says the present, stable X session is running on
VT8.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 519049] Re: xauth generate with large timeout crashes X server

2010-03-10 Thread Courtney Bane
This is not a problem with the NVidia graphics driver. If you look at
the backtrace I provided, you can see that the assertion failure occurs
within Xorg's security extension (Xext/security.c). Specifically, you
can see the assertion failure message in the backtrace: X:
../../Xext/security.c:322: SecurityAuthorizationExpired: Assertion
`pAuth-timer == timer' failed. (entry #3 in the backtrace; the stuff
that occurs after that is the implementation of the assertion failure).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 535142] Re: 82815.i810 with GDM: endless loop of logins

2010-03-10 Thread Dave Rohde
Bryce Jeremy Thanks even if automated.
Before hand I've had to remove the Checkbox functions as it would hang in the
display section on extreme magnified resolution and the system would have to be
rebooted to free from the lock. Removed pulse and all pulse related files due
to loop file created and regenerating in the /dev/shm folder each 64 MB and up
to seven or more files. However the login loop existed before these removals.
Thanks hope this helps

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 456902] Re: [i845g] Karmic stops responding a few minutes after log in

2010-03-10 Thread crazybyte
Somewhat works if I disable modeset (nomodeset) and use vesa, but it's
at the limit of usability, if I try to switch between text mode console
and X the graphic screen freezes up and only the text console works (if
I switch back). Also because I'm using VESA the screen resolutions are
much much lower. Isn't there a fix (as a package or something that can
be used to upgrade the system), even if it's unofficial, for Karmic?
Thank you!

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 96473] Re: [nvidia-glx] Window content is black after opening 5/6 windows when using compiz

I encountered this with a 256MB nvidia 6600GT AGP card when the 'AGP
Aperture size' in the BIOS was set to a value lower than the amount of
memory on the video card. After upping the value in the BIOS, the
problem went away.

2010-03-10 Thread Robert Hoegerl
Just tried a new scenario:
- Boot up in text mode without AC power
- Login in text mode
- Connect AC power
- start gdm

Result: no crash. I'd guess that means that no other program that might
be run automatically by Ubuntu when the AC power is disconnected can be
responsible for the crash. Consequently, the error has to be with the X
server ...
