Could you please reproduce this bug (ie: try to log in to a second user)
and then run “apport-collect 548784” in a terminal? That will collect
all the relevant logs and attach them to this bug.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 41301] Re: Mouse clicks stop working sporadically

2010-04-15 Thread ndeubert
I started having this problem like 6 months ago when I was using Xubuntu
9.10. Short of restarting the Xserver nothing would fix it. I tried
removing all my configuration files and starting clean but it still came
back so i gave up on Xfce thinking it was the problem and installed
Kubuntu 10.04 and I have it happening regularly in KDE even on the first
boot. It seems like the problem might be related to the window managers
because it seems like dragging or un/maximizing the windows with a
double click sometimes triggers it.

I use google chrome with gmail open most of the time, and a logitech mx
laser mouse. but I have plugged in other mice when experiencing the
symptoms and they didn't work either. FWIW I am using an nvidia 6600
video card with the nvidia proprietary drivers and a twinview dual
monitor setup too. Is there any other trouble shooting info I can post?
It happens pretty regularly for me.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 564423] [NEW] No cursor on resume from suspend

2010-04-15 Thread Borahshadow
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

I upgraded from 9.10 to 10.04 Beta 2
Upon resume from suspend the cursor is missing but by watching the results of
rollover (highlighted buttons etc) It is possible to still click on things.
After a period of time (a couple of minutes) the cursor will come back and all
will be normal. I'm not sure if it is just a time delay or if the cursor needs
to be moving during the time it is absent if that makes sense.

My hardware is a Vostro 1000 with an ATI video card and an AMD
processor.

But it *does* display correctly at those resolutions? VESA isn't
expected to recognise your display; it's a last-resort basic video

Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 353126] Re: Compiz / vnc screen refresh with nvidia-restricted driver/VirtualBox/ATI fglrx driver using X.org prior to release 7.5

2010-04-15 Thread lunix
The problem is still here Lucid <-> Lucid.
The only way it works is if all screen enhancements, i.e. Compiz is
turned off. No refresh happens if any of the special Compiz features
are deployed. With all turned off then screen refreshes to the initiating
machine.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 542357] Re: upgrade from karmic to lucid: gui is crashing on login

2010-04-15 Thread Shaved Wookie
Just remembered... Two details that may / may not be important:

1. I boot with radeon.modeset=0 as I just get a black screen otherwise
2. This machine is also running xorg-edgers ppa

I understand that xorg-edgers is unsupported, but thought it worth
adding in case the original poster was using X-E as well.

I stand corrected. I guess i was too tired to notice that the 1st one's
date was the 13th, and not the 14th. Plus, i should have noticed by now
that the queues are chronological. :)

Well, based on the following the translation updates might not make it in time
for 10.04 release:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/NonLanguagePackTranslationDeadline
But this definitely is something users will "survive", even if it is released
as an update after the official 10.04 release.

Thanks all.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 561994] [NEW] frozen screen when starting unplugged from power chord with ATI graphics

2010-04-15 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

as described in the #509273 I had some problems with the switch to KMS and my
ATI graphics card. Now seems all ok,but if I boot up on battery power I run
into the same problems with the same symptoms. It boots up but before login
screen the notbook freeze and nothing can be done. The same if I start into the
rescue console and start there "startx".
It didn't help to gave the kernel the "nomodeset" option.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 353126] Re: Compiz / vnc screen refresh with nvidia-restricted driver/VirtualBox/ATI fglrx driver using X.org prior to release 7.5

2010-04-15 Thread NoOp
Are you still having this issue with Beta2? Does the target machine have
/desktop/gnome/remote_access/disable_xdamage checked? I have no issues
going from lucid Beta2 to lucid Beta2 without that option checked, but
had issues going to a karmic machine without it checked. Once checked on
the karmic machine(s) I have no further issues using remote access.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 542357] Re: upgrade from karmic to lucid: gui is crashing on login

2010-04-15 Thread Shaved Wookie
I'm getting this on a machine with: Kubuntu Lucid AMD 64, Radeon HD 4850
running ATI driver.

Lucid Beta 2 live cd works fine, but my installed version (which worked
fine a few weeks ago until I updated recently) gets to KDM and then just
stops. Mouse and Keyboard don't *seem* to respond, however Alt+SysRq+RSE
drops me to a working root shell.

The only real uncommon errors I can see in kdm.log / Xorg.0.log are:

"Kcrash: Application 'KDMgreet' is crashing..."

and shortly after:

"Error setting MTRR (base = xd000, size = 0x1, type = 1)
Inappropriate IOCTL for device (25)"
DDXSigGiveUp: Closing Log
drKonqi: cannot connect to X server 0.0"

Please let me know if there's any info I can provide to help.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 564378] [NEW] Fails to set MTRR for 2D acceleration

2010-04-15 Thread aeromojito
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-neomagic

Playing DVD or other video results in dropped frames and high CPU usage
on a Neomagic NM2380 chip (MagicMedia 256XL+). The problem is evident in
VLC and Totem. This was not the case in Hardy. The difference has been
traced to the absence of the MTRR setting for video acceleration. This
bug also exists in Jaunty and Karmic but I have not tested Intrepid.

In Lucid (10.04):
cat /proc/mtrr
reg00: base=0x0 (0MB), size= 256MB, count=1: write-back
reg01: base=0x01000 ( 256MB), size= 128MB, count=1: write-back

In Hardy (8.04):
cat /proc/mtrr
reg00: base=0x0 (0MB), size= 256MB, count=1: write-back
reg01: base=0x01000 ( 256MB), size= 128MB, count=1: write-back
reg02: base=0x0fc00 ( 4032MB), size=8MB, count=1: write-combining

Entering the command
echo "base=0xfc00 size=0x80 type=write-combining" > /proc/mtrr
in a terminal will set the MTRR but it will be reset at boot or when the
X-server is restarted.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 561982] Re: Unusable Area on main screen in 2 screen setup

2010-04-15 Thread mlindeblom
If Visual Effects in Appearance Preferences is set to none, blender 2.5
works well with second monitor enabled.

Visual Effects of normal or extra cause blender to garble unless second
monitor is disabled.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 561982] Re: Unusable Area on main screen in 2 screen setup

2010-04-15 Thread mlindeblom
Using drag and drop via amdcccle to reposition screen works. Operations
moving a gnome-terminal to all areas of both screens was great. Visual
Effects in Appearance Preferences is set to extra.

The blender 2.5 screen was randomly garbled until I disabled second
screen with amdcccle.

The analog LCD is connected via a DVI to VGA D-Sub adapter. The native
size is 1024x768.

2010-04-15 Thread David Bobo
After a failed update attempt late last night, the graphics were once
again working properly. The keyboard/mouse then quit working so I
couldn't investigate further (couldnt get to virtual terminal).
Rebooted today to terminal and started gdm. Keyboard and mouse started
working again but graphics are also "twinkled" again.

I will submit all required logs, just tell me what all I need to do.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 541492] Re: MASTER: [i845] GPU lockup (apport-crash) (Should KMS be blacklisted?)

2010-04-15 Thread jerrylamos
Bryce, referring to comment #59, this is a 1280:1024 monitor ration 5:4
or 1.25 a bit different from 1024:768 which has 4:3 or 1.33. Vesa has
no problem with the 5:4. I do have a 1440:900 or 1.6 in the other room
if I really got energetic I could tug it in here.

Running i915.modeset=0 and default intel driver, right now the 3ubuntu4
version, running O.K. Got bored so I tried Glasen's
2:2.11.0+git20100416~glasen~ppa1 intel video driver. That ran for a
couple minutes then the gdm froze. Ctrl-Alt-F1 worked so I took a dump
of i915 error, dmesg, Xorg.0.log in case anyone wants it.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 562005] Re: Backlight controls on ThinkPad T510 no longer function when using proprietary drivers

2010-04-15 Thread Tom Gelinas
I have no idea how to effectively monitor changes in /sysfs. The best
method i'm using is to use "tree" to map out Sysfs, and then search for
interesting things and monitor them. If someone could please share a
better method i'd be very appreciative.

I have not found if there is a difference in sysfs between
The hardware brightness buttons on this laptop always affect
/sys/devices/virtual/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness. If change the brightness
while running X, /sys/devices/virtual/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness is
changed but the actual backlight is not affected. If I then switch to a text
mode VT and press the backlight up button,
/sys/devices/virtual/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness is increased by 1 and the
backlight is set to that level. This level will persist when I switch back to
X.

Nouveau makes a symlink called nv_backlight at /sys/class/backlight,
which links to
sys/devices/pci:00/:00:01.0/:01:00.0/backlight/nv_backlight,
so I suppose that it is not possible to use nouveau's backlight controls
with the nvidia driver.

/sys/module/video/parameters/brightness_switch_enabled is always set Y when
using either nouveau or nvidia.

It seems that the only solutions for backlight control on this laptop are
either to force the nvidia driver to control the backlight, or use the text
mode VT's method in X. LED backlights don't have inverters, so I'd think that
they shouldnt be producing a buzzing/humming noise. I think it's a very bad
idea to force the nvidia driver to control this backlight by default because it
may result in physical hardware damage.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 564343] [NEW] Touchpad doesn't disable entirely in 9.10

2010-04-15 Thread John Spencer
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-input-synaptics

Fresh install of 9.10 on a Dell E6400. This laptop has both a touchpad
and a pointer.

I've disabled the touchpad using system->preferences->touchpad and as
expected the touchpad does nothing. The pointer continues to work,
which is what I wanted.

However, if I'm using the Pointer and knock or touch the touchpad, the
mouse goes crazy. This doesn't happen when using an external mouse.

Thanks

John

2010-04-15 Thread Wenzhuo Zhang

Neither apport nor gdb can catch a meaningful backtrace; and apport can
detect the crash only when gdb is attached to the X process. I don't
know why. I've carefully read and followed the instructions provided in
the following X debugging howtos:

http://xorg.freedesktop.org/wiki/Development/Documentation/ServerDebugging
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Backtracing

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 541492] Re: MASTER: [i845] GPU lockup (apport-crash) (Should KMS be blacklisted?)

2010-04-15 Thread jerrylamos
Bryce, thanks much for the explanation. With more and more dependence
on X then stability in the X code is even more important.

Just booted i915.modeset-0 and default video driver:
Xorg.0.log

(WW) intel(0): i845 or i855 chip detected. Disabling DRI to prevent system
instability.
(**) intel(0): Framebuffer compression disabled

(II) AIGLX: Screen 0 is not DRI2 capable

(II) Loading extension XFree86-DRI
(II) LoadModule: "dri2"
(II) Loading /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/libdri2.so
(II) Module dri2: vendor="X.Org Foundation"
compiled for 1.7.6, module version = 1.1.0
ABI class: X.Org Server Extension, version 2.0
(II) Loading extension DRI2
(==) Matched intel as autoconfigured driver 0

(II) LoadModule: "intel"
(II) Loading /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/intel_drv.so
(II) Module intel: vendor="X.Org Foundation"
compiled for 1.7.6, module version = 2.9.1
Module class: X.Org Video Driver
ABI class: X.Org Video Driver, version 6.0
.

On the surface seems to be what is expected except does load DRI modules
anyway for some reason?

Jerry

2010-04-15 Thread ifj . Kálmán Tarnay
Welll... not exactly the same for me on lucid using an intel card.
I can reproduce it this way:
1) log in as any user
2) switch to to any other user (not guest-session, because that won't trigger
this)
3) log oout
4) Observe that all you have is a black screen, not even Ctrl-Alt-F1 works

Alright, well at least this has pinpointed the problem to a kernel
regression. I will forward to that team to investigate further. If
you're comfortable building the kernel you could test out reverting the
suspect patch(s) and see if you can narrow down to the specific patch
that causes the issue (or that got dropped from -20 -> -21).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 555298] Re: [RV250] black screen when switching users

2010-04-15 Thread Bryce Harrington
Ernst, seems like a good guess. The way to test is to see if this
command causes the screen to restore:

xgamma -gamma 1.0

Alwin, could you try seeing if the above gets the system back?

If that works around the black screen, then yeah we can set this as a
dupe of #546578.

2010-04-15 Thread jerrylamos
With xorg.conf specifying intel driver and DRI Off, the following are
excerpted from the Xorg.0.log after the X failure:

(II) intel(0): 0x07fff000:end of memory manager
(WW) intel(0): ESR is 0x0001, instruction error
(WW) intel(0): Existing errors found in hardware state.

On the surface it says the DRI module is loaded, it sees the "Off"
option, then it does have DRI memory manager allocated anyway. Is DRI
running or not?

I assume (II) messages are information on startup.
The (WW) look like messages from the crash.

The i915 error state says

Time: 1271353623 s 200345 us
EIR: 0x
  PGTBL_ER: 0x
  INSTPM: 0x
  IPEIR: 0x
  IPEHR: 0x1801
  INSTDONE: 0x01c1
  ACTHD: 0x07a95000

I have no clue on that.

The dmesg says
[61077.272028] [drm:i915_hangcheck_elapsed] *ERROR* Hangcheck timer elapsed...
GPU hung
[61077.272047] render error detected, EIR: 0x

[61086.245669] [drm:i915_gem_entervt_ioctl] *ERROR* Reenabling wedged hardware,

.

Any way to tell if "DRI" was responsible for the "GPU hung"?

Let me give a try with i915.modeset=0 and default video driver on this
i845...

Thanks, Jerry

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 564181] Re: [RV730] GPU soft reset infinite loop scrolling in firefox with compiz

2010-04-15 Thread Bryce Harrington
A few other ideas to try out:

There have been some updates to -ati recently, and since you indicate
this to be a regression that occurred in the last day, this would be the
first thing I would suggest looking at. None of the ubuntu changes look
like they could cause this kind of a bug, but who knows. It would be
helpful if you could downgrade and test the following versions:

  * -ati: 1:6.13.0-1ubuntu1 - this will rule out two (innocuous?) changes in
the last couple days
  * -ati: 1:6.12.192-2ubuntu2 or earlier - this will rule out upstream changes
we brought in about a week ago
  * -mesa: 7.7.1-1ubuntu1 - this will rule out a change in the last couple days
which I think is innocuous but who knows
  * xorg-server: 2:1.7.6-2ubuntu3 - this will rule out several patches
recently added to xserver which were taken from upstream that look safe but may
have changed something unexpectedly.

I haven't looked at what has changed in the kernel recently, but you
probably have the -19 or -20 kernel. If you find you cannot reproduce
it after booting into an earlier kernel that could point to a regression
in the kernel.

Beyond that, look in your /var/log/dpkg.log file to see what got updated
and go through downgrading them until you find a good suspect.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 562005] Re: Backlight controls on ThinkPad T510 no longer function when using proprietary drivers

2010-04-15 Thread Tom Gelinas
I can now force the nvidia driver to control the backlight. I don't know
why it didn't work before, I did 2 hard reboots and the setting didn't
take effect. Regardless, the nvidia's backlight controller is still less
effective than the one used by nouveau or in a text mode VT. The nvidia
driver's backlight control should not be force-enabled by default
because it changes the brightness in inconsistent increments and causes
a buzzing noise to emanate from the LED backlight. This noise is at
different frequencies according the the level of brightness, and
sometimes ceases for a fraction of a second while the backlight is
changing from one brightness level to another. Is there anything I can
do to give a comparison of the brightness levels passed by nouveau
driver or in a text mode VT? I'd assume there is something in Sysfs.

What is the difference between how a text mode VT or nouveau change the
backlight brightness, compared with how nvidia does it? Gnome should be
forced to use a non-nvidia method by default.
