[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 546885] Re: glxinfo crashed with SIGSEGV in XF86DRIQueryVersion()

I got this error message though a silly means... I tried to run
glxgears/glxdemo (whatever) over xhosting. Now don't get me wrong, I'd
love for that to work. But I don't really consider that much of a fail.

Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 312756] Re: support graphics card hot switch

2010-04-15 Thread Albert Vilella
Thanks for the ars technica link.

Yes, we've been following this closely since the last year or so. In
terms of hardware, Optimus seems to be going mainstream now, but with
ATI you can also put the discrete card to sleep. Dave Airlie's
vga_switcheroo code does some of this hot switching, and it has
entered 2.6.34. But we want to achieve the same level of functionality
in Windows 7 and OSX. Dave has started to write some code for real
hot switching, but developers are needed now to follow with the
implementation:
http://airlied.livejournal.com/71734.html

For more info:

On Thu, Apr 15, 2010 at 6:22 AM, Sandeep san...@gmail.com wrote:
OSX has enabled a new feature (recently introduced with its new Core i5

Note that this is not something that is supported by specific hardware,
but instead is something that the operating system does :
 http://arstechnica.com/apple/news/2010/04/inside-apples-automatic-gpu-
 switching.ars

Such a feature allows for significantly increased battery time and since
is done totally in software, would be a great addition to Linux.

Geir, I'll give a try at the PPA for DRI on/off.  Once booted up, is
there any way to tell if DRI is on or off?

There will usually be a line or two in Xorg.0.log giving it away. In
one of the logs you posted the log stopped before it got that far. If
in doubt, include your Xorg.0.log with your result.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 560122] Re: lucid beta2: impossible to install on notebook K50IN

2010-04-15 Thread Chris Halse Rogers
BAH! Sorry! The xorg.conf in part (2) should have been:

Section Device
Identifier nvidia
Driver nv
EndSection

Rather than Driver nouveau; we already know that nouveau's not
working! Could try this *without* setting “nouveau.fakeparam=yes” - we
want to see if the nv driver can successfully bring up your display even
when vesa can't.

For part (1), did VESA work successfully for you? Does it drive your
display properly?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 556209] Re: [G72M] Display is shifted ca 7cm to the right.

2010-04-15 Thread Chris Halse Rogers
Again you've got the xorg-edgers nouveau package but not a corresponding
linux-backports-modules-nouveau. How did you purge the xorg-edgers
packages before? Did you use ppa-purge, manually remove the packages,
or just remove the archive from your sources?

If you just removed the archive from your sources then that won't have
removed the xorg-edgers packages, which have a higher version number
than the main repository's packages.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 545096] Re: [lucid][R500 X1400] intermitent screen corruption (pink world )

2010-04-15 Thread Lionel Dricot
I've been runing without any corruption for 3 days using kernel
2.6.32-20-generic since Monday night. (there were both a kernel upgrade
and a radeon upgrade)

There was obviously a fix in this kernel. I've even seen a related line
in the changelog but I can't find it back. It was something like fixing
the pulsating backlight horizontal sync.

I still have some subtles backlight changes but those are a lot less
annoying, a lot less frequent and, most of all, there's no corruption
anymore !

Now, I hope that today's upgrade will not bring back the problem :-) If the
problem is not back, this bug can be considered as fixed.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 562872] Re: xkeyboard-config needs to create a POT template on build

2010-04-15 Thread David Planella
there are 2 .pot files Approved for import (as seen using David's link
above): the first one w/ 728 strings, and the 2nd one w/ 681 strings
(the latter judging by 681 appears to be the same as what's in LP right
now).

It's the other way round: the first one in the queue is the outdated
template with 681 strings, and the last one is the updated one I
uploaded with 728 strings.

They will be imported in the order they are in the queue: first the
681-strings one and then the 728-strings one, so we should be ok. In any
case, the fix for this bug will imply a third upload, again with an
updated 728-strings template, so we should still be fine.

I'll have to check if xkeyboard-config is part of
NonLanguagePackDeadline (today), but otherwise, I'm sure it will be
imported before LanguagePackDeadline.

@Petr
Play around with these settings in the device section:

Option Crtc2Half # [bool]
Option Crtc2Ram # i

I think you just need to set the first one to true (omit the 2nd);
although I am not sure - just a guess.

@Marty
Did you try the patch-4 on 10.04 beta2? Can you please clarify what you mean
with

Just remember to also grab patch-3 (
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-

All I did was install one of the patches via repository, and then played
around with xorg.conf - unfortunately with no success. What (how) do I
need to apply to mga.h when I already install the patch from repository
(I'm not a programmer). Thanks.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 511747] Re: support for Acer 1420P

2010-04-15 Thread Felix Homann
Hi,

could someone please explain how to calibrate the touchscreen.
I've tried the calibrate.sh script in /usr/lib/xf86-input-evtouch without
success:

1. No evtouch capable device found...
2. After putting this:

?xml version=1.0 encoding=ISO-8859-1?
deviceinfo version=0.2
  device

match key=input.product contains=RMTP-MA957
   merge key=input.x11_driver type=stringevtouch/merge
/match

  /device
/deviceinfo

in /usr/share/hal/fdi/policy/20thirdparty/30-Acer1420p-touchscreen.fdi

the script runs (with sudo), but I won't see any red crosshair, nor will
I see any effect after restarting my session.

At the moment, whenever I touch the screen, the mouse pointer will move
straight to the upper left corner of the screen.

Kind regards,

Felix

2010-04-15 Thread Konstantin Lavrov
So you still have it. But in fact your case not so similiar like mine.

Perhaps it is OK in your case. I mean it just reflects that there is
problem with EDID.

In my case this ERROR repeats in dmesg many times.

And I have this: i915 :00:02.0: LVDS-1: EDID invalid.

And its happen even with mainline kernel and xorg from edgers.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 557436] Re: [GM45] [upgrade] [regression] [lucid]: external monitor only usable via DVI, not via DP

2010-04-15 Thread Matthias Andree
Further data point, but currently inexplicable, a similar issue haunted
Fedora 12 on the same hardware, but not Windows 7, but now has
disappeared on either Linux system after rearranging (i. e. replugging
the DP cable), but never existed on Windows.

This may mean that signalling between what X.org does and what Windows
configures might be subtly different -- so subtle it doesn't break DDC
data or WIndows display, but big enough to make a difference to X.org-
based display.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 562739] Re: Ubuntu 10.04 graphics crash when run as guest in VirtualBox

2010-04-15 Thread hasan adil
Hi
I've added screenshots of what happens during boot.

Screenshot 1 - The error that shows up.
Screenshot 2 - The choices after you click on OK.

Run ubuntu in low-graphics mode - it loads with guest additions and the display
size is 800x600 with bad graphics, no usb support etc.
Reconfigure graphics - You see screenshot 3. If I click on any of these choices
then the screenshot 3 comes back up. Cancel to go back to screenshot 2
Restart X - you get screenshot 4 and it stays on it forever. I have force the
shutdown and restart it at which point I get screenshot 1 again.

Screenshot 5 shows the (virtual) hardware config I'm using for ubuntu
10.04, it is the default choices.

Driver intel

and kernel 2.6.32-21 with xserver-xorg-video-intel 2:2.9.1-3ubuntu3
stayed up all night. Previously without the Option it black screened in a half
hour.
GtkPerf was 46.69 seconds much slower than vesa with 34.29 seconds.

What benefit do I get for my application centered operations is there
with video intel which is by that measure 36% slower than vesa?

stayed up all night.  Previously without the Option it black screened in a
 half hour.
GtkPerf was 46.69 seconds much slower than vesa with 34.29 seconds.

So in this case, turning DRI off in xorg.conf actually made a
difference, even though it is already disabled. This suggests that the
disabling is not done in the right place. Could you attach your
Xorg.0.log from this session here (which is now Xorg.0.log.old if you
restarted xorg once since you ran this)? I would like to see how the
DRI disabling messages interact.

What benefit do I get for my application centered operations is there
with video intel which is by that measure 36% slower than vesa?

For you there will apparently be no reason to run with intel, since
vesa is much better. But then, I suppose you help us with this in
order to help everyone else running ubuntu :-)

The main problem with the VESA driver is that it has a very limited
set of resolutions available. If the native resolution of your monitor
is one of those, then fine. The VESA resolutions are all in 4:3
format, so nobody with a 16:9 monitor will be able to use the native
resolution. I think also high-resolution monitors will have problems.
This is the main reason we don't want to use VESA by default.

You could just boot in recovery mode, drop to the command line with
networking support, type jockey-text -d fglrx and reboot. Things
should be back to normal then.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 563774] [NEW] Invalid EDID for Dell SP2309W in VGA mode

2010-04-15 Thread Brian Burch
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

This monitor has a preferred resolution of 2048x1152 @ 60Hz. The desktop
does not fill the display and leaves a 2 cm black strip on the left
margin. The monitor manual adjustments do not permit the image to be
moved or expanded to fill the screen. Some of the lower resolutions fill
the screen, so I am confident the monitor does not have a hardware
fault.

This problem is reported against karmic, with the screen attached
through a kvm switch. I have reproduced the same symptoms under lucid
beta - so I will attach the lucid diagnostics because xorg on that
system is at the latest level.

My karmic and lucid systems use the nVidia NOUVEAU driver, but the same
symptoms also occur using the proprietary drivers at version 185 (from
the ubuntu repository), and also with version 195 (from the nvidia ppa
repository).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 550625] Re: Alps touchpad is recognized but neither gsynaptics nor mouse preferences work

2010-04-15 Thread Alberto Milone
@J. McDonald
2-finger scroll is grayed-out because (somehow) the kernel detected that you
trackpad doesn't support multitouch (i.e. the last two values of the Synaptics
capabilities property should be 0). If it used to work, then it's definitely a
kernel issue.

@Topher
I think you're still experiencing a kernel issue and your touchpad is being
detected as a mouse. The output of dmesg and your /var/log/Xorg.0.log should
help me confirm my theory.

Could some people who got a crash like this please attach their

particular video drivers/graphics cards, or only particular extensions.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 563774] Re: Invalid EDID for Dell SP2309W in VGA mode

2010-04-15 Thread Brian Burch
Please note that lucid beta is running from an unmodified CD downloaded
as ubuntu-10.04-beta2-desktop-i386.iso. That means the /etc/X11/
directory does NOT contain an xorg.conf file.

According to the X.Org web site, X Server 1.7.6 is the up-coming next
stable release.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 563774] Re: Invalid EDID for Dell SP2309W in VGA mode

2010-04-15 Thread Brian Burch
I found several reports of this monitor not working properly on its hdmi
interface (particularly the mythbuntu faq), and tried all the work-
arounds proposed, but none of them seemed to make an improvement (some
were disastrous!). My screen is attached via the vga interface: I am not
sure whether that should make any difference to the EDID data.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 541492] Re: MASTER: [i845] GPU lockup (apport-crash) (Should KMS be blacklisted?)

2010-04-15 Thread jerrylamos
Geir, I'm retired from IBM where among other things I did system
testing, so here to try out new Ubuntu releases I run 4 test pc's i830,
i845, ati Mobility 7500, and ati Express 200. Within my linux
capabilities and time I can run some tests where people are interested.

Here's the Xorg.0.log since I haven't re-booted yet. I'll do an
aptitude update, aptitude safe-upgrade shortly.

Thanks for your explanations. Mostly from what I see Ubuntu changes
just appear where someone in the know must understand why the changes
are being done and what they are good for.

I do multi-boot so I can compare previous Ubuntu's usually when the
latest update breaks things. My impression is Lucid Beta 2 is quite
responsive to the keyboard with nice boot up and shutdown times and is
my preferred version.

If what vesa lacks is 16:9 resolution since I'm not a coder it would
seem to me to be easier to add that than whatever development effort the
intel driver is taking. My narrow view I'm the only user so there are
just two accounts, root and jerry, and I never switch accounts, so I'm
not sure what KMS would do for me. With the amount of work and trouble
KMS must have some value to someone.

Thanks, Jerry

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 563774] Re: Invalid EDID for Dell SP2309W in VGA mode

2010-04-15 Thread Brian Burch
lucid beta uses KMS (kernel mode setting) and this is reported in the
log. my karmic system is still using xorg for configuration. I think
this means the problem is attributable to the monitor's EDID data,
rather than the nvidia driver or the dynamic configuration logic.

p.s. I do not have a windows system anywhere on my kvm switch, so you
WON'T hear me bleating about how wonderful the display works with
windoze!

I forgot to mention that I tested under lucid with-and-without the kvm

files I have attached to this bug report were collected WITHOUT the kvm
switch. I conclude the switch is not contributing to the problem.
