[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 565981] Re: [KMS] gem objects not deallocated
I think there is a slight possibility of mixing multiple slowdown bugs here. If you experience slowdown and suspect it might not all be because of GEM objects, please glance at bug #95 which was reported before xorg-server ubuntu2 with the 114 patch went in, and claims that 2.6.32-19 kernel introduced a slowdown that was not there in 2.6.32-18, on intel graphics. And I seem to have even something else which feels like sluggish X.org, namely that ondemand on my computer seems to set the CPU speed to 800MHz on lucid. So if you experience slowdowns of X, you may be interested in not only checking this bug report but checking your CPU clock speed when CPU load is there, and maybe pondering about that other bug which relates to a potential kernel regression with intel. Please report these kernel regression possibilities and possible CPU speed setting failures to the bug #95 instead of here. The CPU thing probably needs another place as well, but better in that bug report where I've already messed about than this GLX / GEM bug report. -- [KMS] gem objects not deallocated https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/565981 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg-server in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

This bug was fixed in the package pkg-create-dbgsym - 0.42 --- pkg-create-dbgsym (0.42) lucid; urgency=low * Add tests/dhtest.doublestrip/: Call dh_strip twice, to check whether this keeps the debug symbols intact. This reproduces LP #562418, where debug symbols and CRC checksums were damaged due to double-stripping. * pkg_create_dbgsym: Do nothing if we already have built a .ddeb during this package build, i. e. it is in debian/files already. The experimental result can be found there: https://launchpad.net/~dnjl/+archive/experimental/+packages?field.name_filter=linuxfield.status_filter=publishedfield.series_filter=lucid Changes summary: linux (2.6.32-21.32+i8xxkmsfix2~dnjl1) lucid; urgency=critical [ Daniel Baumann ] * Revert SAUCE: i915 KMS -- support disabling KMS for known broken devices - LP: #563277 * Revert SAUCE: i915 KMS -- blacklist i830 - LP: #542208, #563277 * Revert SAUCE: i915 KMS -- blacklist i845g - LP: #541492, #563277 * Revert SAUCE: i915 KMS -- blacklist i855 - LP: #511001, #541511, #563277 * x86, lib: Add wbinvd smp helpers (stolen from 2.6.34) * Applied patches done by Daniel Vetter to fix above problems: - agp/intel-gtt: fix i85x gtt chipset flush - agp/intel-gtt: extract mch buffer flush in i830 chipset flush - agp/intel-gtt: check cache-coherency on i830 class chipsets - drm/i915: add locking around chipset flush - agp/intel-gtt: steal the last gtt page - agp/intel-gtt: kill previous_size assignments - agp/intel-gtt: kill intel_i830_tlbflush - agp/intel: make intel-gtt.c into a real source file - agp/intel: split out gmch/gtt probe, part 2 - agp/intel: split out gmch/gtt probe, part 1 - drm/intel: kill mutli_gmch_chip - agp/intel: uncoditionally reconfigure driver on resume - agp/intel: split out the GTT support - agp/intel: introduce intel-agp.h header file On my system (Dell Latitude X300 with 855GM) I'm running this kernel and the libdrm and xorg intel driver from xorg-edgers (https://launchpad.net/~xorg-edgers/+archive/ppa). So I'm able to get my system up and login without any kernel/module parameters. But desktop effects are not working and it's not stable at all. But crashes would not hard freeze the whole system - only X crashs sometimes sporadic. So it's possible to grab the debugging data in sysfs. Those who are interessted in, please test this. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 566125] [NEW] vlc crashed with SIGSEGV in AGER_Term()
You have been subscribed to a public bug: Binary package hint: vlc I haven't noticed any problems with VLC, but apparently it crashed in the background. Does mythtv use VLC? Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 561049] Re: after upgrade to lucid, xorg frequently fails to start properly using nvidia-current
On Thu, 2010-04-22 at 03:39 +, bcrowell wrote: Oops, #43 reads succeeded on the second line where it should read failed. This could be because the nvidia (nvidia-current) kernel module failed to load successfully or some problem with X driver. The documentation says (/usr/share/doc/nvidia-current/README.txt.gz): Q. How and when are the the NVIDIA device files created? A. Depending on the target system's configuration, the NVIDIA device files used to be created in one of three different ways: o at installation time, using mknod o at module load time, via devfs (Linux device file system) o at module load time, via hotplug/udev With current NVIDIA driver releases, device files are created or modified by the X driver when the X server is started. By default, the NVIDIA driver will attempt to create device files with the following attributes: UID: 0 - 'root' GID: 0 - 'root' Mode: 0666 - 'rw-rw-rw-' Existing device files are changed if their attributes don't match these defaults. If you want the NVIDIA driver to create the device files with different attributes, you can specify them with the NVreg_DeviceFileUID (user), NVreg_DeviceFileGID (group) and NVreg_DeviceFileMode NVIDIA Linux kernel module parameters. For example, the NVIDIA driver can be instructed to create device files with UID=0 (root), GID=44 (video) and Mode=0660 by passing the following module parameters to the NVIDIA Linux kernel module: NVreg_DeviceFileUID=0 NVreg_DeviceFileGID=44 NVreg_DeviceFileMode=0660 I don't see, in your logs or mine, any reference to creating the device nodes in the udev logs so I'm not clear what is responsible for creating them at this point. As a test could you reboot into Recovery Mode which is single-user and won't start X and, in theory, will not load the nvidia driver. At the recovery menu choose to start a shell then: 1. Check whether the module is currently loaded: lsmod | grep nvidia 2. Check for device nodes: ls -l /dev/nvidia* 3. If nvidia module is loaded, unload it: modprobe -vr --first-time -o nvidia nvidia-current 3a. If you see: FATAL: Module nvidia is in use. then something is already using the module and we have to think some more on how to proceed. Move on to step 5. 3b. Otherwise, continue onwards... 4. Load the nvidia module manually with verbose reporting enabled: modprobe -v --first-time -o nvidia nvidia-current 5. Try manually starting X with verbose logging: startx -- -verbose 5 -logverbose 5 6. Check if the device node has been created: ls -l /dev/nvidia* 7. If the device node /dev/nvidia0 is not present or the X server fails to start please copy the output of these steps to this bug report. 8. As the aim here is to manually reproduce the failure you'll need to repeat these steps if at first the problem doesn't occur. Also, please report whether each test is done from a cold-boot (power cord removed from the wall outlet), cold-standby (PSU providing +5V stand-by), or warm-reboot (power not cycled; system just restarted) since this *might* be a hardware-related issue exposed by the newer xorg version. 8a. If running in single-user recovery mode doesn't provoke the problem then we will have to revise these steps to prevent gdm starting during a normal multi-user start so the same tests can be run manually there. -- after upgrade to lucid, xorg frequently fails to start properly using nvidia-current https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/561049 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to nvidia-graphics-drivers in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 563774] Re: Invalid EDID for Dell SP2309W in VGA mode
This is very frustrating because my changes have not been reproducible because the monitor is too clever for its own good - it auto-adjusts the image and apparently remembers the optimal alignment for that particular resolution. I've discovered (the hard way) that I can only be sure my test modelines are being used is to wait until the desktop is painted with the new modeline, then reset the display settings (monitor menu button - display - reset display settings). This wipes the memory, BUT also re- establishes the default wide mode of fill. I then change it to use verbatim presentation (monitor menu button - display - wide mode - 1:1). Then, just to be paranoid, I reboot (because I can't logout without getting the NOUVEAU(0): failed to destroy server context hangup). My best values at the moment are the monitor's own EDID modified by (hSync + 48; hframe + 16): Modeline 2048x1152_BB 156.75 2048 2144 2176 2224 1152 1155 1160 1185 +hsync -vsync It isn't perfect because the image is clipped by a few pixels on the left edge. However, I think this particular symptom is not directly related to the modeline because I see it happening on all the lower resolutions encountered during startup. e.g. the bios messages and the initial kernel console messages, which use 4:3 resolutions. (note: I'm doing all this work on karmic because I don't have enough disk space to install lucid and I'm not sure how to use custom modelines under the bootable CD system.) -- Invalid EDID for Dell SP2309W in VGA mode https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/563774 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-nouveau in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

Well, so much for that. Rebooted my system about 1/2hr ago, and as soon as I load up scrotwm, I can see screen corruption (horizontal bar filled with white noise), and then X locked up completely. Tried re-jigging my xorg.conf (had previously been mucking around with vesa and fbdev), but to no avail... every time I loaded X, the same thing occured. Eventually, after removing my xorg.conf altogether, I concluded that something was awry with the driver itself, and so I removed it, and installed the one from the Lucid repos... which means I'll be due for a crash anytime soon, but at least it works for more than a few minutes. i845 ran for a total of 5 hours no problem with intel driver 2.8.0 see comment $76. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 568382] [NEW] Lucid Kubuntu: garbled splash screen and random failures to start X
You have been subscribed to a public bug: Binary package hint: plymouth After upgrading Karmic to Lucid, the splash screen is part-garbled and comes up in very low res and few colours. It looks like it's picking a bad modeline for the monitor, which loses the bottom part of the display. Occasionally it will also jump into the failsafe X dialog on yet another corrupted screen which seems wrapped over the right edge of the monitor. If I simply choose restart X, it works, but then since I have gdm installed it seems to prefer that over my normal kdm. The desktop then comes up in some very low resolution that I can't correct. If I remove the splash boot option it'll all work fine. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 535606] [NEW] GDM resets video mode, although it's already set by kernel
You have been subscribed to a public bug: Binary package hint: gdm Ubuntu 10.04 alpha 3, package version 2.29.92-0ubuntu1 Lucid uses the very nice new feature of kernel mode setting, already setting the video mode correctly during boot time. However, when the boot is through and gdm takes over, the system freezes (sometimes with boot messages still visible, sometimes with an incomplete gdm login screen) until a button is pressed. Then, gdm (or X?) resets the video mode, as far as I can tell to the same settings as the kernel already did. The login-screen is only usable after this reset. This behavior was appropriate when the the bootscreen and gdm use different video modes, but should not happen when they are same (which is what we presumably want anyways). I'm not sure where to file this bug, so feel free to move it to kernel or X. ** Affects: xorg-server (Ubuntu) Importance: Low Status: Incomplete -- GDM resets video mode, although it's already set by kernel https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/bugs/535606 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg-server in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 534433] [NEW] Multiple users login crash
You have been subscribed to a public bug: Binary package hint: gdm This is the same as bug 244737. I was informed to make a new bug. After a few weeks of no response to the original bug, I started to open a new bug, but was asked if this was similar to one of several other bugs. I clicked that it was, and was added to the original bug. You may want to change the bug reporting software, if you don't want this to happen. But that is a separate issue! My real problem is: As I reported several weeks ago, to bug 244737, I would like to know if this issue has this been resolved? I installed Ubuntu 8.04.4 LTS in January, 2010. I have the same problem on a Dell Inspiron which uses the Intel graphics chip set. The error is extremely repeatable. I login as the first user, then login as the second user. Switch to the first user, and log out. I get the login screen and the login screen sound: drum beat, plays forever. I can successfully login as the second user, but if I try to do anything other than shutdown, the screen will go blank and only CTRL-ALT-DEL will do anything. CTRL-ALT-BS does nothing. I get the same authentication errors in syslog and auth.log as above. If I do not switch users, it runs for a few hours and then crashes, i.e., the screen goes blank. I assume that is the same problem. I also installed Ubuntu 8.04. LTS on a much older machine and it runs fine. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 568382] Re: Lucid Kubuntu: garbled splash screen and random failures to start X
Hi Julian, The few colors on the splash screen is a consequence of you having the nvidia binary drivers installed; the only framebuffer plymouth has available to use with such drivers is a 16-color VGA framebuffer. The kubuntu theme could be improved in how it displays on VGA, though; this is bug #551290. The loss of the bottom part of the display is unfortunately not a bug we can fix as long as we're using the VGA framebuffer, because this is simply how the hardware displays in VGA mode. I don't think 640x480 gets a lot of testing from the hardware vendor on newer widescreen LCDs. :/ Launching gdm from failsafe X is because of broken integration between kdm and the failsafe-x upstart job, which currently *always* expects to launch gdm. This is bug #557930. Finally, the fact that you land in failsafe mode at all indicates some kind of bug with the X server. Since you're using the nvidia binary drivers, I'll reassign this to the nvidia-graphics-drivers package. ** Package changed: plymouth (Ubuntu) = nvidia-graphics-drivers (Ubuntu) -- Lucid Kubuntu: garbled splash screen and random failures to start X https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/568382 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to nvidia-graphics-drivers in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
