Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 568779] Re: 10.04 rc livecd boots into black/blank screen (intel 82852/855GM graphic card)
It is critical. People have a bricked laptop after the update. That´s the worst case scenario. Another console aware friend even called me since switchting to the terminal didn´t work as well and he´s a unix guy and had never heard of ubuntus safemode. It´s really pretty bad. Lucid is an aweseom release but this bug is a showstopper imho. Let´s keep the fingers crossed someone has the balls to delay it. But I doubt it. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 356508] [NEW] radeon 3300 locks up screen w/ any driver
You have been subscribed to a public bug: This may be a duplicate of 284408, but is more general than that bug report (I added a comment to it). I recently upgraded from 8.10 to 9.04 beta. Under 8.10 I had run fglrx driver downloaded from ati web site. Motherboard is Gigabyte GA-MA790GP with built in radeon hd3300 and 4 G of RAM (all slots filled). I've tried radeon, radeonhd, vesa, and fglrx drivers. I've also tried to build most recent radeonhd from git, and the most recent fglrx driver from amd/ati web site. In all cases the screen freezes and then you cannot even ctrl-alt-f1 over to a console. It is possible to ssh into the box. (Note that latest fglrx driver from ati does not install due to version of X, etc., so it does not freeze, it just does not install.) Googling around it seems the problem may be related to having all memory slots filled, i.e. if I pull two memory sticks and drop back to 2G then it might work. I haven't tried that. But that might explain why someone might believe 3300 works in Jaunty, if they tested on a system without all memory slots filled. I will be glad to assist in debugging this, but I'd appreciate working w/ someone on Ubuntu's side who has an idea of what the problem might be so I'm not just shooting in the dark. I've lost a good bit of time trying to get some version of X running (all failed) and the system is down for the count until I get this fixed. Thanks. I may well have messed up my system by trying to compile radeonhd from git for it to get something to work. ** Affects: xserver-xorg-video-radeonhd (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Assignee: HammerHead66 (hollycowbatman23) Status: Confirmed -- radeon 3300 locks up screen w/ any driver https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/356508 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-radeonhd in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 157319] Re: Xlib: extension RANDR missing on display :0.0 while using -nvidia with Xinerama turned on
Regarding the assertion that it affects -intel and -ati... citation needed. I've done heavy testing on -ati and -intel and have *never* seen this error message. I just tested this again on my macbook (intel graphics) and thinkpad R51 (ati radeon). I'm attaching the Xorg.0.log files. I get the same error message again while trying to start gedit: Xlib: extension RANDR missing on display :1.0. The program 'gedit' received an X Window System error. This probably reflects a bug in the program. The error was 'BadAlloc (insufficient resources for operation)'. (Details: serial 104 error_code 11 request_code 78 minor_code 0) (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously; that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it. To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line option to change this behavior. Ahaa, I see, the only problem that .21 made things even more worse (no idea about .22 yet) so lucid will come out (today?) as not being able to show me even a login screen (so looks like no successfull boot, only black screen) on some (?) intel GPUs. Sure, I can work-around that with using that 2.6.34 rc3 kernel from PPA, true ... [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 565835] Re: [RV250] Compiz/desktop effects break new log-ins/fast user switching
This bug became pretty simple after all the testing (sorry about the flood of updates). All sessions initiated from sessions without Compiz running turn out ok, and can be switched back to. If you create a log-in from a user who has desktop effects enabled, the new session will be corrupt no matter how many times you switch between them. ** Summary changed: - [RV250] User switching breaks X-session(s) + [RV250] Compiz/desktop effects break new log-ins/fast user switching ** Description changed: Binary package hint: xorg + + This bug report has been revised because some of the originally + described symptoms were in fact of another bug. Steps to repeat: 1. Create two user accounts 2. Log in as one or the other 3. Attempt to switch users by selecting the other user's name or by selecting 'Switch user...' from the power menu. What happens: - - I get a screen with corrupted graphics that does not respond to input - other than showing mouse movement (cursor is a huge block instead of a - pointer). See attached screenshot for more details. If I use Ctrl+Alt+Fx - key kombo I can succesfully switch to any of the text mode terminals, - but will have 2-3 corrupt graphical terminals in range F7-F9. One - terminal will host an unresponsive gnome screensaver dialog, one a blank - screen with an arrow, and one the corrupt graphics or just a blinking - text cursor. The blank screen with the arrow is the working x-session, - because it will take commands. For example I was able to reboot by doing - a Alt+F2, then typing gnome-terminal, then typing sudo reboot and then - typing my password and hitting enter. + I get a screen with corrupted graphics that does not respond to input other than showing mouse movement (cursor is a huge block instead of a pointer). See attached screenshot for more details. If I use Ctrl+Alt+Fx key kombo I can succesfully switch back to my working X-session, but all new log-ins attempted will be garbled. This bug goes away if desktop effects are disabled for the user. It is possible to create a situation where you switch from a user without desktop effects to one who uses them, and not be able to switch back. What should happen: I should either get a login screen or the screensaver password dialog for the other user! [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 571681] [NEW] Black screen after updating graphics card and reboot
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xorg My laptop is an HP Pavilion dv8574ea with NVIDIA GeForce 8600M graphics card. I have damaged my Vista HDD so decided to try UBUNTU 9.1 from the boot CD. This only worked in F4 Safe Graphics Mode, but it seemed OK so I installed it on the HDD. Then I noticed that I could only have the screen in 800x600 so I clicked on the Hardware Drivers icon which recommended that I install the v185 driver. I downloaded it and activated it which needs a reboot. Now the problem is that it starts to load after the reboot and then suddenly I see blue boxes all over the screen and it then goes black, HDD activity stops and I have waited several minutes - nothing. I rebooted from the CD again as there seemed nothing else I could do and reinstalled UBUNTU. I repeated the graphics update again, in case I had made a mistake, but no all I got was a black screen again. Any suggestions? [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 571552] Re: X crashes with 32M radeon 7500 +kms with firefox and flash
FYI, following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Backtracing, I've been struggling mightily to get a useful backtrace. All I seem to be able to get is: #0 __memcpy_ia32 () at ../sysdeps/i386/i686/multiarch/../memcpy.S:75 No locals. #1 0x in ?? () No symbol table info available. The -dbg symbols don't match, it seems the -dbgsym are ok, but I can't get a good bt despite using: Section ServerFlags Option NoTrapSignals true EndSection -- X crashes with 32M radeon 7500 +kms with firefox and flash https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/571552 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-ati in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

Hi, Bryce! Thanks for the reminder! FYI, the system in question is my Mythbuntu box, and it's been up and running w/o problems for several months now. I honestly don't remember how I worked around the bug, (or what version of Mythbuntu the box is running) but I'll get another e-mail to you soon with some additional information. thanks again!
