[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 578167] Re: [i845g] Blank screen problem on login, logout, power savings mode, tty switch etc
I also have these symptoms on my Inspiron 1100. When comparing X logs from a successful boot and one that came up blank, I noticed the following difference: (II) intel(0): Output VGA connected --- (II) intel(0): Output VGA disconnected Note that nothing was connected to the VGA output in either case. (anybody know how to configure X so that it ignores the external monitor connector?) As an experiment, another time it came up blank I tried connecting an external monitor and the login screen appeared on the external monitor and I was able to log in! However, there were still problems such as no mouse pointer. I also discovered that it is possible to (eventually) get a virtual console on the laptop display by randomly banging on ctrl-alt-(F1-F6) until one appears. None of this has anything to do with the looping/vertical lines problem. I still observe that as reported in the bug. -- [i845g] Blank screen problem on login, logout, power savings mode, tty switch etc https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/578167 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-intel in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 568988] Re: [Lucid][Ubuntu 10.04][ATI cards] Slow/freeze windows management (resize, maximise, .etc) with fglrx driver + compositing desktop.
@44 and @all I don't think I'm too unkind in the end. IMHO it is a real advantage for me to know what I am doing. Mostly I reach this goal reading the whole stuff. In this special case I would read the comments on bug 351186 #126 #127 #128 #174 #218 #219 about no-backfill. The no-backclear is described at #228 #234 #256 . The advantage of no backclear and the ppa for karmic your can find here. (#291..#296). My intention for an own ppa is described at its best at #264 and by myself at #413 #414 #421 #436. You will see it's all in the records... @Daniel: It was no offense writing that you are not forced to use fglrx and no backfill. You and anyone can give the free driver a chance. I did this yesterday with a brand new X 1.8 directly from the latest sources and the latest xf86-video-ati, ati-dri, mesa and so on directly from the git. Then I built Compiz 0.86somewhat from the git and it works mostly. Disadvantages are: No powermanagement, my 4890 runs at full speed all the time (over 90 Watts more power consumption), several bugs in Compiz effects (finally get a kernel panic), bugs with glx (best shown with glxgears), memory leaks within compiz. Some strange behaviour with false rendering..). I have checked this out with arch and a 2.6.34 patched kernel (new scheduling, powermanagement and so on) just for fun. I found out by and for myself that the most errors are related primarily to compiz, second in Xorg and the minor part in Catalyst. I've choosen arch, because I'm familiar with arch and I figured out that it has nothing to do with Ubuntu. Today I'll change back to Catalyst and will build a new version of the ppa. -- [Lucid][Ubuntu 10.04][ATI cards] Slow/freeze windows management (resize, maximise, .etc) with fglrx driver + compositing desktop. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/568988 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to fglrx-installer in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 584167] Re: graphics broken during boot after upgrade to lucid 64bit
** Description changed: After upgrading to 10.04 the graphics during boot are corrupted. They show up but are unreadable. The rest used to work, but started crashing after suspend recently. If I reboot then the garbled graphics show up (you can make out the lines and the Ubuntu logo, but you can't read anything) and it's stuck there. I'm sure the message means to say - something important. Last time I pressed F12 by accident and the login - appeared.. this seems to work, but the graphics are still corrupted - during boot. + something important. Last time I pressed F12 and some letters by + accident and the login appeared. Thank you for the help, but the problem has been recognized. No need for any more confirmations :). Regarding SRU updates, it seems (per the SRU Updates wiki) that what is missing in this report is: 1) A patch with the minimal fix that can fix the current package (i.e. setting to relative mode, none other) 2) An upload of the fixed package to release-proposed, the above patch, and a changelog. So it is still up to us to help get this going. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 584246] [NEW] Temporary screen corruption / glitches on Ubuntu x86-64
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-core Hi, during normal usage of my computer, my screen occasionally partially corrupts, especially the lower fifth or so of the screen, sometimes the lower half. It's mostly just multi-coloured garbage (I sometimes get the impression, it's a lot of orange and black) mixed with the real contents of the screen and lasts for under a second. Sometimes this happens more often, sometimes less often, and I have yet to find out, why. I'm reporting this for core, as I've seen this on two different notebooks (HP dv9700 and Lenovo Thinkpad T400), with three different graphics cards (Nvidia Geforce 8400M GS on the HP / ATI Mobility Radeon HD3470, Intel GMA4500 MHD on the Lenovo), both using the amd64 version of Ubuntu 10.04. On both laptops I've seen this using Ubuntu from the live CD, so it happens in stock Ubuntu. Sorry, if this bug already exists, but I couldn't find anything matching. ** Affects: xorg-server (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: amd64 garbage screen x64 x86-64 -- Temporary screen corruption / glitches on Ubuntu x86-64 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/584246 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg-server in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 353126] Re: Compiz / vnc screen refresh with nvidia-restricted driver/VirtualBox/ATI fglrx driver using X.org
In karmic it should be no problem: - Uninstall any nvidia packages installed from the ubuntu repos - Download the beta driver and make it executable (chmod +x /path/to/NVIDIA-Linux-(x86|x86_64)-256.25.run) - Switch to a virtual terminal (i.e. ctrl+alt+f2), login - Stop X: sudo service gdm stop - Check you've installed the build-essential package: sudo apt-get install build-essential - Install the driver: sudo /path/to/NVIDIA-Linux-(x86|x86_64)-256.25.run - Reboot For lucid users it is more complicated, for example see http://www.ubuntugeek.com/howto-install-nvidia-drivers-manually-on-ubuntu-10-04-lucid-lynx.html (haven't tested myself). [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 572521] Re: vertical coloured lines on bootup dell inspiron 1501
Hi Bryce/Frank, I have the same bug in my laptop Inpiron 1501. I'm running Lucid Lynx, with 2.6.31-22-generic kernel. I have less than 6 months experience with Ubuntu, and I'm very happy so far. In karmik koala I found the same symptoms when turn off, but nothing to worry. A couple months later, the symptom appears in login screen, but closing an opening the lid the problem was resolving. Now, with lucid, I have to login with the colored bars screen (blind login ja) and then stand by the laptop, and wakeup, this way is the provisional solution. So which files I have to upload to help the resolutions of this bug? By the way, I'm from Mendoza, Argentina (goood wines here). This is being caused by the xserver not getting damaged by the nvidia-restricted drivers (see https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg-server/+bug/353126/comments/245for details). Linked bugs confirm this is not an issue on intel chipsets or nv driver. Steps to reproduce: Enable desktop-effects (default) with nvidia-restricted, virtualBox's display or some ATI driver like RV610 Enable remote desktop Connect with VNC Results: You see a screen snapshot of your desktop but if you click a menu item there are no updates to the screen. Notes: If you close and restart the vnc session, you get an updated snapshot but still no refreshes. Workarounds: Use the -noxdamage argument with vncviewer. ** Description changed: Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-core Hi, during normal usage of my computer, my screen occasionally partially corrupts, especially the lower fifth or so of the screen, sometimes the lower half. Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 353126] Re: Compiz / vnc screen refresh with nvidia-restricted driver/VirtualBox/ATI fglrx driver using X.org
Actually since the issue has been reported to the nvidia devs only about a month ago I'd say they have been really quick. Anyhow, for lucid users which don't want to fiddle around too much it may be more convenient to look if the updated driver appears in the proprietary-video-improvements PPA (https://launchpad.net/~albertomilone/+archive/proprietary-video-improvements) some time soon instead of installing manually (though I have no idea if and when it will appear). This is being caused by the xserver not getting damaged by the nvidia-restricted drivers (see https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg-server/+bug/353126/comments/245for details). Notes: If you close and restart the vnc session, you get an updated snapshot but still no refreshes. Workarounds: Use the -noxdamage argument with vncviewer.
