[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 574152] Re: 64bit Ubuntu 10.04 Stops Responding

2010-06-02 Thread Stuart
Should this (and https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/579115) be marked as
duplicates of
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/585765 ?

And is xorg really the right package, or a just a side effect? The
filesystem bug
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/515937 seemed a
good explanation to me.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 586173] Re: [i945] intel gma 82945G xorg does not work at boot

2010-06-02 Thread Stenten
Could you please provide your Xorg.0.log file after issuing "sudo service gdm
start" and "startx" and we'll compare.
In a TTY after starting gdm, run
cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log Xorg.0.log_gdm.txt
And after rebooting and 'startx'
cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log Xorg.0.log_startx.txt
Then upload both files; they should be in your home directory.

Also try booting with the kernel option “video=vga16fb:disable”. Make
sure you provide your Xorg.0.log and dmesg logs in this case.

Bug description:
Hello,

on my new laptop, a HP ProBook 6440b (with Core i5 and a plain Intel
Chipset, 4GB RAM) I get randomly freezes of the whole system. I can't
reproduce that, what means I don't know a aplication or usage of the
system making it freeze. sometimes I have uptimes of a day, without
freeze and sometimes it freezes right after booting the system.

I found out, that sometimes the MagicSysRQ (R-E-I-S-U-B) works and let
me shut down the system, sometimes not. I don't know what makes that
difference. In the system log I can't find any unusual entries. But I
foun that the system log is still runing, so shuting down the wifi with
the notebooks hardware switch for example is logged. Also the Wifi
network connection to my router is not interrupted.

I think I found out in detail how to fix the slow FPS and the
flickering.

sudo gedit /etc/default/grub

Edit this line to look exactly like this

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash radeon.modeset=1"

Save and close then run

sudo update-grub

Restart and pray.

Good luck

1) Replace "quiet splash" with "nomodeset".
2) Replace "quiet splash" with "xforcevesa".

nomodeset works as expected. Meaning gdm loads, and I can login normally
(and choose a new session).

xforcevesa -- same issue as seen when removing "quiet splash".

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 541492] Re: MASTER: [i845] GPU lockup (apport-crash) (Should KMS be blacklisted?)

2010-06-02 Thread MikeG0
Just had a crash after hitting wunderground.com in chrome. However,
looks like the flashplugin-installer package and libgcflashplayer.so
were still available. Removed/renamed these and the page loads fine
now. wunderground.com loads a flash ad in an iframe which probably
tries installing flash in an untested manner.

Thanks for the additional tips. I'm psyched ... this dell is getting
pretty stable.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 531069] Re: Display error when returning from sleep after docking

2010-06-02 Thread Chris Halse Rogers
@Torsten Spindler: I'm pretty sure the original bug was a duplicate of
bug #488328, which should have been fixed in the 2.6.32-15 kernel, then
fixed again in 2.6.32-19. It looks like your bug might be more subtle,
so this might not fix it for you.

If it doesn't, there have been a number of similar sounding bugs fixed
upstream - the next step in useful testing would be to see if this
behaviour still occurs in the Maverick kernel - there's a Lucid backport
of the Maverick kernel available in the kernel-team PPA here:
https://edge.launchpad.net/~kernel-ppa/+archive/ppa . If it's still
reproducible there, testing the drm-intel-next kernel from
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/drm-intel-next/current/
would be the next step.

If it's still reproducible there, booting the drm-intel-next kernel
appending “drm.debug=0x04” to the kernel boot line (just after “quiet
splash”, on the same line) and then attaching dmesg and
/var/log/Xorg.0.log after reproducing the problem should give us enough
information to start on.

Based on comment #117 I removed flash, and haven't had a crash / hang
while running chrome since (when it had been a few times a day
previously). Still not long enough to be certain.

Exact steps:
sudo aptitude remove flashplugin-installer flashplugin-nonfree
sudo mv /opt/google/chrome/libgcflashplayer.so
/opt/google/chrome/libgcflashplayer.so.bak

I did this right after a reboot, and did not restart anything after.

Same problem with with the 2.6.34 kernel from kernel.ubuntu.com. Display

X back up is to reboot.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 588980] [NEW] Dumped into login screen while using google earth

2010-06-02 Thread DAP
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

I was scrolling around in Google Earth when the screen suddenly went
black. System did not reboot, but shortly the login screen appeared.

I have seen this happen several times on this computer, as well as
another computer with an older ATI card and 32 bit processor.

This did not happen with the ATI proprietary driver on 9.10. I do not
know if this happens on the ATI proprietary driver under 10.04 because
google earth would crash before the globe appeared with that setup (did
not dump me back at the login screen).

This is the second time I have attempted to enter this bug. 1st time, I
said yes to the request for extra information, waited an hour for 300
MiB to be transfered, then errored out with a "could not connect to
database" error.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 588940] Re: Xorg freeze drm radeon 'Faild to schedule IB'

2010-06-02 Thread seeker5528
I guess it should also be noted that I booted with some of my previously
installed kernels including linux-image-2.6.32-22-generic and the issue
is the same so it seems to be something in the mesa/xorg part of the
equation.

xinput command.

Those settings are correctly applied after a reboot.

Version : Kubuntu 10.04 (clean install) - 32bits
Laptop : DELL Latitude E4300
Touchpad :AlpsPS/2 ALPS DualPoint TouchPad

This issue is most probably the same as the one described in the bug

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 588950] [NEW] XVideo(?) output appears as a one-pixel strip at top of screen when two displays are enabled

2010-06-02 Thread Brian Croom
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

When I have my LVDS display enabled as well as an external VGA display
set up to extend the desktop, many programs which output video function
incorrectly. Instead of the video being displayed in the application's
window, it is only visible as a one-pixel tall strip at the top of the
LVDS display. Dragging the window left and right moves the strip across
the top of the screen. The strip of pixels remains even after the
program terminates. The strip is never visible on the external display.

I have experienced this issue in the following programs:
- mplayer
- VLC
- Totem
- Rhythmbox (the audio visualization)
- Cheese
- Skype
- gstreamer-properties

In gstreamer-properties the display method can be modified. The bug only
occurs of I select "X Window System (X11/XShm/Xv)" for the plugin, and
"Intel(R) Textured Video" for the device. The "Intel(R) Video Overlay"
device and the "X Window System (No Xv)" plugin function correctly

If I have the external monitor clone the LVDS display, the video is
displayed correctly

To reproduce:
- Setup an external monitor to extend the desktop
- Run gstreamer-properties
- Go to the Video tab
- Select "X Window System (X11/XShm/Xv)" for the plugin
- Select "Intel(R) Textured Video" for the device
- (The pipeline is then shown to be: xvimagesink device="0")
- Click test

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 588940] Re: Xorg freeze drm radeon 'Faild to schedule IB'

2010-06-02 Thread seeker5528
For other who might run into this even going into failsafe mode I had to
hit the 'E' key to edit the boot entry and add 'nomodeset' to the boot
options, then choose the 'root console' option off the failsafe menu,
then create the generic xorg.conf to specify vesa as the driver to use:

# Generic xorg.conf

Section "Device"
Identifier "Configured Video Device"
Driver "vesa"
EndSection

Section "Monitor"
Identifier "Configured Monitor"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
Identifier "Default Screen"
Monitor "Configured Monitor"
Device "Configured Video Device"
EndSection

#End of xorg.conf

: Then edit /etc/default/grub to add 'nomodeset' to the options:

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash nomodeset"

: then issue the command:

update-grub

: to update the relavant grub configurations.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 588940] [NEW] Xorg freeze drm radeon 'Faild to schedule IB'

2010-06-02 Thread seeker5528
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

Freezes at various times could be any time during boot or later. At
times I am able to switch to VT 1 and see error messages displayed.

 Jun 2 12:03:49 ubuntu kernel: [ 578.361780] [drm:radeon_ib_schedule] *ERROR*
radeon: couldn't schedule IB(9).
Jun 2 12:03:49 ubuntu kernel: [ 578.361789] [drm:radeon_cs_ioctl] *ERROR*
Faild to schedule IB !

Some times followed by a message about attempting to reset the video
card at which point system seems to be hard locked, not lights on the
keyboard, hitting the 'num lock' key doesn't cause a light to light up
and 'Sys Rq'+'B' has no effect either.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 557635] Re: Intel GMA X4500HD - LCD Brightness Control no longer works

2010-06-02 Thread Matthias Kretz
This seems to be the problem:

%lshal -l -u /org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/computer_backlight
udi = '/org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/computer_backlight'
[..]
  laptop_panel.brightness_in_hardware = true  (bool)

Thus PowerDevil/Solid only register the brightness key presses but don't
actually set the brightness as they expect the hardware to do this. Can
others with this problem confirm that this is the same issue for them or
do I have a different bug and should open a new report?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 588918] [NEW] Keyboard layout for Sindhi

2010-06-02 Thread Abdul-Rahim Nizamani
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xkeyboard-config

I was advised to report the keyboard layout for Sindhi language here.
The new file for keyboard layouts of Pakistan (pk) is attached here. The
new keyboard layout is called "MBSindhi", though you can name it
"Sindhi" as well. It starts at line 203 in the attached file.

This layout is for Sindhi language (locale: sd_PK, sd_IN), though the
locale sd_PK is yet to be included. This is is the default keyboard
layout widely used for Sindhi in Windows and Linux, but is not included
in the Ubuntu's packages. So I am submitting it here to be included in
the system.

It is not used by the locale sd...@devanagari, which uses a different
writing script whereas this keyboard layout is for the Arabic-based
script of Sindhi which is the default and official script both in
Pakistan and India.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 554569] Re: [lucid] Blank screen with KMS on Thinkpad X201 with Arrandale (i915)

2010-06-02 Thread Jon Skulski
i have a new x201 lenovo 3249-CTO and am seeing the blank screen on boot
problem

I have successfully booted and installed 10.04 amd64 with the kernel
parameters 'i915.modeset xforcevesa nomodeset'.

However, I can not boot the actual install with the same (or no kernel
parameters) in both regular and recovery mode.

As far as I can tell, it is the same kernel. Not sure why I am seeing
this behavior. Is there more information I can provide?

fixes their systems. This would verify your bug and probably be the
basis for a separate bug report if Juan's situation is different.

2010-06-02 Thread frufo
Had similar problems with the RV410 AGP card. Passing the parameter via
grub command line did not work but for me this worked:

echo "options radeon agpmode=1" >> /etc/modprobe.d/radeon.conf
update-initramfs -u

the last one is necessary to get the option into the initramfs-image. Of cource
you can try agpmode=1,2,3 here as well.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 588056] Re: [i945gm] X crashes when using 3D application

2010-06-02 Thread Sami Pietila
Hi,

I don't have desktop effects in use. Crash happens even if I haven't
sustended my machine earlier.

By crash I mean screen going black and after that Gdm screen appears and I can
log in again. I think X server just dies (because libglx.so experiences a
segmentation fault?)
.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 588366] [NEW] Wireless switch position not properly detected

2010-06-02 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

In 32-bit Lucid Lynx I was able to get the broadcom BCM4212 wireless
working with the proprietary driver that I installed. There is however a
very annoying bug related to the wireless switch on this Dell Vostro
1320 and I am not sure if it is related to the switch itself, with the
wireless driver or with network-manager. What happens is the following:

Whenever the computer is turned on (or returning from suspend/hibernate)
the current position of the wireless switch is recognized by network-
manager (or kernel, don´t know where this is detected) as being in
disabled mode. This is fine if that's in fact the position of the switch
is actually disabled as enabling it will turn on the hardware (blue
wireless light comes on) and network-manager will identify it as active
automatically enabling wireless (unless I deactivate it there of course)
allowing we to connect. If the switch is actually in the "on" position
when the computer is turned on (which it will be most of the time) the
blue wireless light is on and seemingly working while network-manager
recognizes it as being off and grays out the option of activating
wireless. Flipping the switch now will cause network-manager to think it
is on (and so it "activates" wireless) but at the same time the hardware
is actually turned off (blue light goes off as well) so no networks are
ever found.

This is really annoying since I always have to reboot/suspend all the
time to be able to use wireless. It is even more frustrating because the
computer is not mine (I am just configuring it for a complete
linux/ubuntu newbie) and my friend is waiting for a fully functional
ubuntu.

I should also mention that the the switch works as it should in Windows
Vista (it's a dual-boot configuration).

Trying the behavior from a live-usb (lucid) gives the same results even
before activating the proprietary driver (which leads me to believe the
problem is not with the driver itself).

I checked /var/log/messages and /var/log/kernel and didn´t see any
entries when flipping the switch so I do not know if the problem is with
network-manager or with the kernel and I also don´t know which log
files/command outputs I should include/look into to further troubleshoot
but let me know which ones are valid and I´ll include them right away.

Short of a solution, any workaround would be very welcome. Such as
fooling kernel/network-manager that wireless switch is always on etc.

Kristofer

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 587528] Re: vlc crashed with SIGSEGV in exit()

2010-06-02 Thread Rémi Denis-Courmont
There are really not one but two bugs here, one in X and one in VLC.
First Your X server crashed. This triggered the Xlib error handler in
VLC, which is notoriously buggy in VLC 1.0 and earlier, and therefore
VLC crashed too. The good news is, the VLC bug should already be fixed
in VLC 1.1.

The bad news is, because you only have the stack trace for VLC, the X
bug can probably not be investigated.

2010-06-02 Thread Simon Hill
apport info was collected after rebooting just after the problem occurred.
Other observations:
 - I can normally guess when the problem is going to occur as the system
appears slow.
 - Sometimes the monitor goes on standby, sometimes it just goes black.
 - It can occur when logging-off as well as switching user.

apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected

** Description changed:

  Hi,
This problem started happening after upgrading from when I upgraded from
Hardy to Lucid 10.04 LTS.
I have the black screen when switching between users.
The problem doesn't happen immediately, but only after a few switches, or
after a certain amount of time, in fact it's pretty unpredictable.
If you require further information, please don't hesitate to ask (you may
need to give instructions as to how to obtain this info as I'm a relative
newbie)

I was asked to create this new bug report in Bug #290704. The symptoms
of this bug look the same, but for a different graphics card.

  (n.b. I was unable to report bug using $ ubuntu-bug -p nvidia-
graphics-drivers-173, as it failed with "Package nvidia-graphics-
  drivers-173 does not exist")

  Simon.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 588601] [NEW] I am getting fed up with Ubuntu releases

2010-06-02 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Look - do you guys know what you are doing or not. I have been a user
since approximately version 6. Up until 9.04 all is well, easy to use,
set up etc. Starting with 9.10 it has been a mess. Difficult setup,
hours killed getting the computer to work right, still not quite right
after all is said and done. Now to version 10. On one of my other
computers I upgraded 9.1 to 10. the upgrade did not work well for
video, sound was always garbled and only after much work did I get video
to work right. The problem seems to be the ATI video driver.

When I open Synaptic Package Manager it reports that there are 3 broken
packages on my system and to use "Broken" filter. I checked your web
site but could not find any clear guidance on what "Broken" filter is so
I tried Fix Broken Packages under Edit In Synaptic. Absolutely nothing
happened, no message, no indication that the command worked or any other
clue.. I then searched for videos drivers in Synaptic and found the
fglrx file and tried to load it. I forget now but when I first
upgraded, and tried to solve the video problem was told (forget what
told me) that this is what I needed to load. I tried to load the file
and received this error message

An error occurred
E: /var/cache/apt/archives/fglrx_2%
3a8.723.1-0ubuntu3_amd64.deb: subprocess
new pre-installation script return error exit status 1

After more attempts over several days I got a really dumb idea. I
decided to create a dual boot system with one boot being the upgrade
ver. 10 and the other being created using a cd burned with the ver. 10
from your web site. I loaded the cd version and all seemed well at
first. The cd ver. was notably faster (something I assumed might
happen) and I now thought I could hopefully get video with good audio on
the cd. ver. But guess what, I now have a computer with a dual boot
(both ver. 10) but no internet access from either boot. The boot that
use to access the internet fine except for buggy video and garbled sound
won't access the internet and neither will the other boot.

I am at a loss at this point as to what to do. I tried the icon in the
upper right that says something like autoeth and all seemed well except
it said it had never connect. Never had this type problem before so not
sure what to do. Hate to start all over with a reload that just erases
everything and end up at the same point. Any ideas?

Guys it was this kind of never ending problems that made me give up
Windows and become a Ubuntu and iMac (for the wife) house. At first you
were great and easy to use, but lately it has not been worth the effort.

In case you are wondering, I am reasonably computer literate, use the
command line, learned PC's with the first IBM dual floppy machines,
still think the HP41cv (not technically a computer) is (still have and
use mine) one of the best products ever produced and enjoy working with
computers for fun but not when I am forced to by poor upgrades.

so give me some hope please. thanks David

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 585765] Re: Ubuntu 10.04 random freezes

2010-06-02 Thread Nomax
>From bug #569011:

It happens on a Compaq Deskpro ENL/P866 here. It's a Pentium III 866Mhz
with an Intel 815 chipset and an Nvidia graphic card.

The system freezes randomly and Ctrl-Alt-SysRq-B is the only way to
reboot.

It happens:
- with kernel 2.6.32-22
- in GUI

It DOESN'T happen:
- with kernel 2.6.31-21
- in text mode (tty)

Just tested with mainline kernel 2.6.34 #020634 and no freeze happens anymore.
Unfortunately, I'm stuck in 1600x1200 at 60Hz on 17" CRT with this kernel
making the PC hardly usable for a long time.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 555169] Re: [lucid] Keyboard and mouse freeze after grub, usb and PS/2 keyboard not working in X (after upgrade? bad-upgrade to lucid)

2010-06-02 Thread Dariusz Maciejewski
Thanks Feo. Maybe I'll try your solution in the future, but currently I
have reverted to 9.10 and don't plan to upgrade in the nearest future.
In my opinion 10.04 is uglier and much less usable than 9.10 (are they
going the same way the KDE3->KDE4 has gone?)

Yes, thanks for the notice. I marked it as duplicate.

If possible it would be great to up the importance of this bug to
"high" -- looks like it affects many users. Note that for me, it
affects both 10.04 and 9.10. The last Ubuntu version that doesn't
lock up is 9.04.
