[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 288918] Re: Keyboard layout randomly switches to US international (dead keys)

2010-06-13 Thread BrianNapoletano
I can confirm that this bug appears in Ubuntu 10.04, Lucid Lynx. Oddly
enough, I did not encounter it in 9.10. Anyway, for professional
reasons, I generally switch between three different keyboard layouts:
USA, USA International (with dead keys), and Latin American. I have
configured GNOME to change the keyboard layout when I press Shift + Caps
Lock. However, since upgrading to Lucid, the keyboard configuration will
randomly switch without me entering the key sequence. Thus far, I have
been unable to isolate a single common key sequence or action that
triggers this change reliably, although I have found that using the
mouse to select an item from a GNOME panel frequently triggers it. I
have examined the hotkey settings, and found nothing that would explain
why the layout keeps changing. As per the previous request, I am
attaching a file containing my hardware profile and X log to this
message.

Aeher - I have skype - will try uninstalling when I get a chance.

Thank you :)

 I think I found what does it on my machine.

 I did a fresh install and rather than my usual mods I only installed the
 kubuntu restricted extras package and firefox. I'd normally switch the
 network manager with wicd but I left this out. One other package I had
 before was Skype Beta 2.1.0.81-1 which is meant for 8.04+. I went all
 week without getting the error (it was normally several times a day)
 then an hour after I installed the Skype beta I got an X crash the same
 as I had been getting.

 I notice the package drops a file /etc/dbus-1/system.d/skype.conf -
 perhaps the changes in there cause the error.

 I wouldn't know what to check from here but maybe someone with the right
 skills can check this out?

 Status in “xorg-server” package in Ubuntu: New

 Bug description:
 Binary package hint: xorg

 After upgrade to Lucid, the X server started to crash, however I fail to
 detect any pattern. It can occur only after hours of use or quite soon after
 logging in, thus I guess it's pretty random.

 After the crash, the screen blinks (with black screen and terminal output)
 for a few times and then GDM restarts and I'm able to log back in.

 Please note that I'm not using a standard Ubuntu kernel due to a problem
 I've had since Karmic: in that case, X wouldn't even start. However, even
 with a modified kernel, I experienced no problems while using Karmic.

 A sample output of .xsession following the crash :

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 528467] Re: [i855] GPU hung (drm i915 intel) on Lucid Lynx Alpha 3 live CD

2010-06-13 Thread gene
This get more interesting. As a matter of fact I experience an xserver crash.
The kernel seems to be intact. After having run for 4 days
$uptime
 01:48:36 up 4 days, 13:21,  4 users,  load average: 0.17, 0.46, 0.88
I get an X crash and a window in a minute saying that a low graphic session can
only be run with different options none of which bring me back to drm/dri
capable Xserver.
This probably indicates that I have to file a separate bug? However I get a
similar entry in the kern.log

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 578342] Re: Crackling sound with DVD playback on Lucid

2010-06-13 Thread Andreas Schiffer
Hi Luke,

sorry for the late answer; I couldn't find time for this earlier.
Now I'd like to test your fix, but the latest version I can find on the Ubuntu
Audio Dev PPA is linux-alsa-driver-modules-2.6.32-22-generic. I can't find
version -23.
Maybe I'm too stupid to use a PPA...
Can you please help me on?

Thanks.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 593248] [NEW] .nvidia-settings-rc wil not load if 'Include X Display Names in the Config File' is checked

2010-06-13 Thread Volodymyr Dudenko
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nvidia-settings

The summary says it. nvidia-settings can't load .nvidia-settings-rc at
startup if the 'Include X Display Names in the Config File' is checked
in the 'nvidia-settings Configuration' submenu.

The output is like this:

ERROR: Cannot open display 'Ubuntu:0.0'.

ERROR: Cannot open display 'Ubuntu:0.1'.

ERROR: Unable to assign attribute CursorShadow specified on line 21 of
   configuration file '/home/user/.nvidia-settings-rc' (no Display
   connection).

...and so on until the last line.

This results in default display settings at reboot. Unchecking the
abovementioned option removes the 'Ubuntu:0.' before the display number,
letting the settings file load successfully.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 585765] Re: Ubuntu 10.04 random freezes

2010-06-13 Thread foobar
This issue affects me as well. In fact once while writing this post :-/

Sometimes I am able to ssh into my machine to give it a graceful
shutdown. Often I have to press the Reset button, which I hate. Even
being able to open a ssh session does not necessarily mean that a
shutdown -r now will work.

I cannot find anything inside my system logs either. Just a couple of
zombie processes last time it froze, maybe this helps:

the issue is that blinking colored lines appears on blank (black) screen
and I can't do nothing to restore the system. The only solution I have
is to reboot the PC !!!

Moreover, The issue appears also when I was surfing on the web with
firefox of the Lucid version. But in this case I can't reproduce the
problem. It's unpredictable for me. It's not like antspotlight
screensaver...

I hope these comment would help you,

Many thanks.

Regards

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 593239] [NEW] 10.4 LTS will download but crashes on install

2010-06-13 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Binary package hint: ubuntuone-client

I am a newbie using 9.1 with no problem. Using synpac updates I am up to date
and tried to upgrade. The upgrade to 10.4 downloade fine but on re booting the
logo and flashing dots appeared and then a flash of colour followed by a blank
screen.
As I was going for a full install I had no option but to re install 9.1. I also
obtained a new 10.4 LTS distro from a friend, tried that but with the same
result.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 593080] Re: synaptics touchpad clicks working erratically

2010-06-13 Thread Richard Wonka
New input on this one:

touchpad performance can be restored temporarily by

# modprobe -r psmouse  modprobe psmouse proto=imps

for some time, functionality is restored, but will deteriorate within
minutes.

repeated reloading of the module seems to consistently restore
functionality when taps start being ignored.

This is greatly affecting usability of the system, please up its level.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 593239] Re: 10.4 LTS will download but crashes on install

2010-06-13 Thread Neil Perry
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. This bug did not have the correct package associated with
it, which is important for ensuring that it gets looked at by the proper
developers. You can learn more about finding the right package at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage. I have classified this
bug as a bug in xorg, as your screen is going blank after plymouth.

If you are able to boot into the recovery mode, we need some vital
hardware information. Please run, apport-collect 593239

I'm marking this bug as incomplete until the needed information is
attached.

The suggested fix

works great for me - now my system feels slick again :). I checked OpenGL
games, video playback and the resizing of windows without any problems.

Do you eperience the same issue with 2.6.34 stable kernel from the
mainline?

2010/6/13 foobar timo.bu...@web.de:
 This issue affects me as well. In fact once while writing this post :-/

 Sometimes I am able to ssh into my machine to give it a graceful
 shutdown. Often I have to press the Reset button, which I hate. Even
 being able to open a ssh session does not necessarily mean that a
 shutdown -r now will work.

 I cannot find anything inside my system logs either. Just a couple of
 zombie processes last time it froze, maybe this helps:

 Could you plesae try installing the linux-alsa-modules-2.6.32-23-generic
 package from the Ubuntu Audio Dev PPA, http://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-
 audio-dev/+archive, and reboot, then attempt to reproduce the problem.

Is there any new stuff in this alsa-modules package compared to the alsa
modules in the latest 2.6.32-23-generic kernel in proposed ? I've been
running the proposed kernel for a while and it has all the same problems
as current -22 wrt. to audio and KMS.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 570433] Re: [RV380] Garbage playing Videos with UMS, Textured Video Fullscreen

2010-06-13 Thread Øyvind Stegard
The problem is not only with Totem. Once it starts occuring, it seems to
happen with all applications using XVideo/Textured video and when
resizing to large size or fullscreen. One effect is that video image is
rendered on a tiled pattern, separated by thin lines. The effect can get
worse and videos become completely unviewable, looking almost like some
kind of ASCII art video playback in fullscreen. It seems to be something
that's leaking, since it typically only happens after applications have
initialized/used Xvideo a number of times. A suspend/resume cycle or X
restart fixes the problem for some time .. Once it starts happening,
it's always there, and nothing else seems to help.

Tested with latest radeon DDX driver git snapshot (as of June 13), no
improvements over the driver that is currently shipped in Lucid.

I'm attaching a screenshot showing the tiled corruption that occurs.
It's rather easy to reproduce, but triggering it might be dependent on
certain source video image dimensions (not sure).

XVideo

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 586173] Re: [i945] intel gma 82945G xorg does not work at boot

2010-06-13 Thread iadk
Hi, I am a newbie and have a problem. When I start in Ubuntu, with
Linux 2.6.32-22-generic, I will see the Ubuntu splash screen for a
second, followed by a blank screen. My hard disk isn't spinning so I
guess the system is doing nothing then. If I start in Ubuntu, with
Linux 2.6.31-22-generic, everything is fine.

So, I tried Ubuntu, with Linux 2.6.32-22-generic (recovery mode). At
the Recovery Menu, I selected Run in failsafe graphic mode. At the
next menu, I selected Troubleshoot the error, followed by Archive
configuration and logs. The reply was Relevant configuration and log
files have been saved to: $xorg_backup_file. I then selected Run
Ubuntu in low-graphics mode for just one session.

I can't find the $xorg_backup_file so I have no idea where the
configuration and log files are. I am attaching a tar file I found at
/var/log.

Please advise me if my problem is the same as the bug reported here and
what I should do. Thank you!

Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 133060] Re: Synaptic touchpad fails to register some of the taps for tap-to-click

2010-06-13 Thread Josh Schneider
Well, the fix worked again, and I now have a patched x64 version of 1.2.2.
Thanks again.

FYI, on my end the patch applies at line 2090. There isn't even a line 2518
in that file. The difficulty for me (who doesn't really know what he's
doing) is tracking where the patch is placed as the driver is updated. Does
anyone know if this will ever just be incorporated in the driver itself, or
where I should go to request that? Previous posts said it had been fixed
upstream, but clearly it hasn't been. Also, it's not an Ubuntu or Debian
issue, but a universal problem for this touchpad (I'm assuming the same in
the e1405/e1505/e1705) in Linux (same poor functionality across distros).

On Thu, Jun 3, 2010 at 5:44 AM, Kris kmbr...@gmail.com wrote:

 Josh, follow the steps given by Valentin Neacsu (posted 2007-09-01)
 The file to modify is in xserver-xorg-input-synaptics-1.2.2/src/synaptics.c
 just after the line 2518 where it says:

  Bool inside_active_area;

  /* update hardware state in shared memory */
  if (shm)
  {
shm-x = hw-x;
shm-y = hw-y;
shm-z = hw-z;
  ...

 Now it should look like:

Bool inside_active_area;

if (hw-x == 1  hw-y == 5855)
{
hw-numFingers = 0;
hw-fingerWidth = 0;
hw-z = 0;
hw-x = HIST(0).x;
hw-y = HIST(0).y;
}

/* update hardware state in shared memory */
if (shm)
{
shm-x = hw-x;
shm-y = hw-y;
shm-z = hw-z;

 It works for me and hopefully it will work for you.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 570433] Re: [RV380] Garbage playing Videos with UMS, Textured Video Fullscreen

2010-06-13 Thread Øyvind Stegard
Looks like it's related to bicubic image filtering in XV. Disabling
XV_BICUBIC (via xvattr) makes the corruption go away. Re-enable
XV_BICUBIC and corruption is back.

This also explains why some videos don't trigger the problem, and why
the problem only appears when scaling up past a certain size. XV_BICUBIC
is default set to 2(auto), which only enables bicubic scaling (and thus
show corruption) when video dimensions are scaled = 2x.

I found the easiest work-around is to switch from X to a VT and back
again, and the corruption goes away. I tried this because according to
the following (old) radeon driver commit, XV bicubic texture is reloaded
on VT-switch:

http://cgit.freedesktop.org/xorg/driver/xf86-video-
ati/commit/?id=474eda02257152ced52364f38cbad24c20aebbc0 [radeon: reload
bicubic Xv texture on VT switch]

It's also reloaded on suspend/resume, which is another work-around I
have mentioned.

times - this is far from being an automated process and I do not want to fiddle
with https://launchpad.net/~glasen/+archive/855gm-fix, so
I will be testing the latest kernel from kernel-ppa instead , i.e.,

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 593382] [NEW] package fglrx (not installed) failed to install/upgrade: subprocess new pre-installation script returned error exit status 1

2010-06-13 Thread Damián Fossi
Public bug reported:

[Warning] Uninstall : inst_path_default or inst_path_override
 does not exist in /etc/ati. This suggests that the ATI driver
 is not installed, the ATI driver is only partially installed,
 or the current ATI driver installed is an older version than the
 one this script was designed for. Both files listed above are
 required for determining where installed files are located.
 To force uninstallation of the driver by guessing where the
 uninstallation files are located, set the FORCE_ATI_UNINSTALL
 environment variable and re-run /usr/share/ati/fglrx-uninstall.sh (this is not
recommended).

Need to track this one down everyone.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 593395] [NEW] [maverick] corrupt rendering of glxgears (in kvm guest)

2010-06-13 Thread Dave Gilbert
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-cirrus

I'm running maverick in a kvm guest under a lucid host (64bit).
If I run glxgears on the guest I get a very corrupt rendering (attached) - note
that this is a screenshot taken from within the guest,
so it makes me feel it's more likely (but by no means certain) that it's more
likely to be the Xserver guest rather than the qemu-kvm layer. All 2D stuff
renders fine, and all 3d stuff is corrupt - since there is no 3d acceleration
on the chip it should all be
being done in software on the guest shouldn't it?

The guest is configured with a 'xen' video adapter shows as xen, 9MB
ram, Heads: 1 in virt-manager using the local SDL window.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 586173] Re: [i945] intel gma 82945G xorg does not work at boot

2010-06-13 Thread Geir Ove Myhr
Asif, the xorg upgrade is now complete, so you may re-test and upload
the files.

iadk, you probably don't have the same bug, since this one is reported
for Maverick, not Lucid. I would also encourage you to go to the forums
(http://ubuntuforums.org/) or possibly Launchpad Answers
(https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu, but I think this one less active)
to get help. In bug reports we focus on identifying and troubleshooting
bugs in ubuntu and thereby improving the distribution. Ideally, all
comments to a bug report should in some way help in getting closer to
fixing that particular bug. If you want to help to improve Ubuntu by
reporting your bug and are prepared to provide follow-up information,
please file a new bug report with the ubuntu-bug command.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 593400] [NEW] KDE fails to load multiple times after login

2010-06-13 Thread jasonv2
Public bug reported:

After entering credentials on KDM screen, the KDE splash screen appears, 1st
icon, 2nd icon... and then it fails to load and the KDM screen reappears.
I tried to login multiple times, same issue but the KDE splash screen crashes
sooner. After about 15 times trying to login, the splash screen displays
all the icons and my kde desktop successfully appears.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 549727] Re: [10.04] Touchpad stops working after login

2010-06-13 Thread S. Sikkema
I too experience this problem since a few days, probably after an
update. At home I always use a mouse, so I did not notice until
recently. I have an Acer Aspire One ZG5 with Ubuntu 10.04 2.6.32-22
generic. My touchpad is completely dead for all users. Unlike others it
does neither temporarily work at the login screen, nor randomly, nor for
a limited period. I tried Fn-F7, gconf-editor (Touchpad is enabled),
mouse settings menu, checked outputs from dmesg | grep Touch, xinput
list-props SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad and cat /proc/bus/input/devices.
Nothing special found.

Then I booted from a USB start-up stick with Ubuntu 9.10, with the
expectance that touchpad would work again which would allow me to find
the differences in settings. Guess what: it did not. I did the same
listings and settings check, compared with the previous investigations.
Again found nothing weird. Unless the problem was also present in the
ubuntu-9.10-desktop-i386.iso (I maybe did not notice then since
immediately after installation there were many updates), it leads to my
suspicion that it the problem is resident in the netbook. Does this help
anyone to find the root cause? Can anyone confirm the same behaviour on
his laptop? I realise it could even be a hardware problem. Nevertheless,
I'm still looking forward to a solution.

Bug description:
Hello,

on my new laptop, a HP ProBook 6440b (with Core i5 and a plain Intel
Chipset, 4GB RAM) I get randomly freezes of the whole system. I can't
reproduce that, what means I don't know a aplication or usage of the
system making it freeze. sometimes I have uptimes of a day, without
freeze and sometimes it freezes right after booting the system.

I found out, that sometimes the MagicSysRQ (R-E-I-S-U-B) works and let
me shut down the system, sometimes not. I don't know what makes that
difference. In the system log I can't find any unusual entries. But I
foun that the system log is still runing, so shuting down the wifi with
the notebooks hardware switch for example is logged. Also the Wifi
network connection to my router is not interrupted.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 550477] Re: 1920 x 1080 HD displays outside frame of screen.

2010-06-13 Thread mausahid
I have the same problem with ubuntu lucid and samsung screen. when using hdmi,
resolution goes up to 1920x1080 but desktop menus are out of the screen frames.
more than this, if using vga cable, only resolution possible is now
1360x768,and some other below, leaving black lines on the sides of the screen,
as if 4/3. with ubuntu karmic i had higher resolutions available also with vga
cable.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 322921] Re: At startup, can't drag windows between dual monitors

2010-06-13 Thread David Tombs
Driver is important because most xorg bugs are actually bugs in the
drivers. Yes, it's possible the underlying issue is the same, but it's
also possible the underlying issue is different, and it's much less
confusing the treat the reports separately if there's any chance that
they might in reality be separate.

It's not like separate reports are going to hinder fixing this bug. I'm
not sure why you're so against it. This is standard operating procedure
here, to avoid fiascoes like bug 197762.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 593463] [NEW] xsession crash and consecutive loss of dri/drm capability on i915

2010-06-13 Thread gene
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

After a recent upgrade to Lucid, I get intermittent Xserver crashes resulting
from a few days of uptime. Usually it happens when power-manager kicks in to
blank the screen. I get these message in the kern.log:
Jun 13 01:21:22 domus kernel: [392077.221266] [drm:i915_hangcheck_elapsed]
=*ERROR* Hangcheck timer elapsed... GPU hung
Jun 13 01:21:22 domus kernel: [392077.221276] render error detected, EIR:
0=x
Jun 13 01:21:22 domus kernel: [392077.221293] [drm:i915_do_wait_request]
*E=RROR* i915_do_wait_request returns -5 (awaiting 18764775 at 18764774)

Kernel seems to be intact: other services, like webserver works. I get a
messages that a low graphics mode should be eneabled. And the dri/drm
capablipities are being lost, unless I reboot the machine.
The messages similar to the above are related to a few other issues however not
identical to the one I experience.
This olso maybe related to the i915 memeory handling, 'cause I can see that
memory gets more abused on Lucid (I also witness it on an ATI chip). Is there
a memory leak in the Xserver code? I see (II) intel(0): No memory allocations'
in the Xorg.log. Moreover,

Along with the kern.log messages I see the following in my
Xorg.[012].log:

Xorg.[02.]log

(=3D=3D) intel(0): Silken mouse enabled
(II) intel(0): Initializing HW Cursor
(II) intel(0): No memory allocations

Xorg.1.log:

(EE) FBDEV(0): FBIOPUTCMAP: Invalid argument

Last message floods the log file I get =

grep '(EE) FBDEV'  /var/log/Xorg.1.log  | wc -l

I am no *34 kernel version. The issue occurred with the latest ubuntu kernel

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 585765] Re: Ubuntu 10.04 random freezes

2010-06-13 Thread Jonathan
Brand new Lenovo T510, 4gb RAM, Intel i5 (4 core) processor running
Lucid. It's been freezing from day one. Just added pae to kernel
(2.6.32-22-generic-pae) last week (for some reason installer did not see
that I had 4gb of mem). Still, no difference, the computer is still
freezing. The screensaver was running and I moved the mouse to wake it
up and it froze. The good news is that I can SSH to it (usually it is
completely hosed). Right TOP shows 99% cpu idle.

Attached is kern.log with what could be an interesting stack trace:

I have everything in /var/log/ If other logs would be useful then let
me know.

Some other things to note: compiz is disabled, virtual box is disabled.
When this current crash happened I was on AC power and I have the power
settings set to not sleep, or spin down harddrives or anything, just
turn on the screen saver (which is opengl picture show IIRC).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 378529] Re: Calibrate Touchscreen dialog said to report this.

2010-06-13 Thread Tim Hicks
I was told by people in the Touchsmarttdevzone.com that Ubuntu 10.04
supported the touchscreen, but I haven't been able to get it to work so
I am adding a request for its support here.
