[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 446717] Re: [gm45] Adjusting Brightness in Acer Aspire Timelines causes system freeze in 4810T and 5810T models
Hi everyone, I have an Acer 4810TG which is affected by this bug. I have 3 OSs installed: Windows 7 64bit, Ubuntu 10.4 32bit and Fedora 13 64bit (KDE only), and the bios version is 1.35 (released April 22nd). The new bios didn't make any difference for me, otherwise here is what i could observe: -on W7, the brightness hotkeys do work, but not very accurately: i can apparently set 10 different levels, but the lower three have the same brightness, so that the last 2 keypresses when decreasing, and 2 when increasing it cause no effect at all; furthermore i have no OSD feedback. These glitches could be sign of poor support to W7 from Acer, I had Vista preinstalled. - On Ubuntu with the given workaround (nomodeset apci_backlight=vendor) the controls work very well, ~20 levels with the nice OSD. Unfortunately this cannot be done in F13, which requires KMS on intel cards. - On Ubuntu and Fedora with desktop effects disabled, and default kernel arguments (except i8042.nomux, needed for a touchpad bug), thus with KMS enabled, i have a behavior similar to W7, but with even more inaccurate control: the number of levels is not fixed, and i get an OSD which, at least on Fedora, shows incorrect values. What's more interesting is that as soon as i reactivate compositing everything freezes. In Ubuntu the only way to recover control is to forcibly shut down the notebook, whilst in fedora i can restart the X server (with ctrl+alt+back) but only start new sessions without compositing, if i login to a user having it enabled i get stuck at the loading splashscreen. An interesting fact is that ANY OPENGL ACTIVITY seems to trigger the bug, not only enabling desktop compositing but also starting glxgears for example causes me a system freeze, although not always immediately. I think this bug is not in compiz, but in kernel modesetting instead! Unluckily I currently don't have the time to do much further testing, such as some with the Radeon discrete GPU (i got some freezes with that to, anyway). -- [gm45] Adjusting Brightness in Acer Aspire Timelines causes system freeze in 4810T and 5810T models https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/446717 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-intel in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

But how such a problem slipped into an LTS? I experience the same problem with any version of the nvidia drivers: With a clean install ubuntu10.04-64: - tried ubuntu-supplied nvidia proprietary drivers, the problem arise; - tried x-swat repos, same problem; - tried nvidia-supplied .run packages, same problem with both 195.xx/256.xx; It's much worse now, after a reboot it loose configuration settings for some applications, this time gedit loose its entire preferences.. i just don't know what's happening.. -- nvidia driver sometime does not load at boot https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/532436 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to nvidia-graphics-drivers in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

I cannot even manually install the drivers in 10.04 (or any distro based upon Ubuntu 10.04) because I cannot manually shut down X server - the commands apparently changed going into 10.04 with no luck finding what they changed to via Google. - among other hurdles. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 565407] Re: package fglrx (not installed) failed to install/upgrade: subprocess new pre-installation script returned error exit status 1 - inst_path_default or inst_path_override
i repair that following the steps of post #25 and #26 -- Gabriel Cuka wrote on 2010-05-08: | #25 -- I renamed the /usr/share/ati folder to /usr/share/ati_old, and after that the installed completed. Interesting: no new /usr/share/ati folder was created by the install. Of course, ATI Catalyst no longer functions... farge wrote on 2010-05-08: | #26 I can verify Gabriel Cuka's comment - renaming that directory allowed both the repository fglrx package and the ATI-sourced package to install. Renaming the /usr/lib/fglrx directory also fixed two installation warnings about subdirectories not being able to be deleted. Neither of these two steps, however, resulted in a functioning driver. I wonder whether it's a kernel issue, since my display is garbled on startup as well. Full 1440x900 resolution without acceleration when in X, but the startup splash screen is garbled beyond recognition. Yeah!!, I got my graphics working, after opening as administrator and renaming /usr/share/ati to /usr/share/ati_old, thanks to #10 and #24, also, after I renamed the folder, I went into synaptic, searched for ati, and it showed xserver-xorg-video-ati and also xserver-xorg- video-radeon as being installed, leading me to be able to have a high resolution, but no compiz I am assuming, I then rebooted and activated the ati driver in Hardware Drivers, and everything now works, thanks guys for all your help. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 565407] Re: package fglrx (not installed) failed to install/upgrade: subprocess new pre-installation script returned error exit status 1 - inst_path_default or inst_path_override
I need to clarify, I uninstalled the xserver-xorg-video-ati and xserver-xorg-video-radeon packages from synaptic, not just searched for them. Having two ati drivers packages installed was probably causing errors and preventing me from installing fglrx, as well as having to rename /usr/share/ati folder to /usr/share/ati_old all helped fix my issue. Although now, I go into monitor, and it doesn't show what model monitor I have, before it would display the model name of my monitor as Viewsonic, I'm not complaining, that's really a mute point. I also had two sets of ati ccc in the preferences menu, but fixed that by deleting one set in the main menu configurator. -- package fglrx (not installed) failed to install/upgrade: subprocess new pre-installation script returned error exit status 1 - inst_path_default or inst_path_override does not exist in /etc/ati when ATI Drivers are previously installed https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/565407 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to fglrx-installer in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

Installed the Glasenhart 855-drm patch (stable) and then the intel driver. Improved overall stability and performance, but Google Earth still brought system down, as did OpenGL screensavers with frequency. Then added Brian Roger's Mesa fix, after which Google Earth functioned perfectly, although there seem to still be intermittent freezes on some screensavers (of which I am only aware of due to being unable to wake up the screen after screen OFF (assuming system has frozen. REISUB is ineffective so it is a fairly deep fault rather than with X). Which log files should I access at the next freeze to make a more useful report? Extra information: this was working perfectly until a few weeks ago, so perhaps the bug was introduced in a recent kernel upgrade? I tried downgrading the kernel from 2.6.32.23.24 to 2.6.32.22.23 (i.e. from lucid-proposed to lucid-updates) with no luck. I'll try downgrading further to 2.6.32.21.22 (lucid) to see if that helps. -- Blank screen on resume with Mobility Radeon 9600 M10 (RV350) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/583885 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-ati in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 538346] Re: Display manager in Ubuntu 9.10 not working with dual displays properly
On Friday 18 June 2010 01:09:42 you wrote: Yes please, do reboot. 1) Rename xorg.conf. 2) Reboot. 3) Configure monitors with g-d-p. 4) Reboot (or logout/login should work) to reproduce the issue. If it's still broken, please attach the new /var/log/Xorg.0.log from this attempt. Thank you! David, What you suggested did not work. My notes and the file you requested are attached. I renamed xorg.conf to something else. Rebooted. 1. After logging on I note 'Unknown' marked in top left of the primary monitor. Second monitor blank. 2. If I try and use gnome-display-manager, a dialog box appears with the text It appears that your graphics driver does not support the necessary extensions to use this tool. Do you want to use your graphics driver vendor's tool instead? 3. If I choose No. Can't change any configuration. 4. If I choose Yes the dialog opens nVidia X Server Settings Tool but a dialog that appears states You do not appear to be using the NVIDIA X driver. Please edit your X configuration file (just run `nvidia-xconfig` as root), and restart the X server. 5. I note that a new xorg.conf has not been created. 6. The details from the xorg.0.log are below. I have reinstated the previous version of xorg.conf without trying to recreate a new xorg.conf or anything else. Please advise me what you would like me to do. Downgrading the kernel further didn't help. It's only the screen that's blank - the keyboard is fine. In other words, I can do a CTRL-ALT-F1 and although the screen stays blank, I can log in and shut down cleanly (if I type very carefully!). [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 585765] Re: Ubuntu 10.04 random freezes
Just adding a note that this affects me as well. Importance seems like it should be pretty high. Random freezes often occurring (minutes) after a default 10.04 install on an Asus 1201N, 32bit, apt-get upgrade'd all including 2.6.31-22, ext4, nvidia ION, Atom 330 dual-core, 2GB system with all on-board components active via bios settings (webcam, wireless, LAN, card-reader, USB controllers, etc) running latest ASUS 3.26 bios, NOT using nvidia proprietary drivers, and networking via the realtek wireless. System is essentially unusable. Note: running 'sudo powertop' will freeze it every time. Seems kernel related (apparently kernel panic; caps-lock LED blinking), and perhaps related to acquiring of hardware stats/ACPI, although using the built-in LAN (wireless off) seemed to help, where on wireless, system froze in minutes; on built-in LAN, system ran fairly stable. Perhaps removal of HAL in 10.04 is not quite baked? No logs to add; typing this from win7 factory install (dual boot). Thanks in advance for any resolution on this issue. My former eee 901 with 9.10 was rock solid and would love to continue running 10.04 on my new fancy machine :) Will try the 'noapic nolapic acpi=off' options since that may help. -- Ubuntu 10.04 random freezes https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/585765 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg-server in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 377929] Re: Unable to set rotation on AMD Geode LX800
Hi, Martin, Now I am work with this issue, I have trace the key error point, you can see my update in Xorg-driver-geode Mailing List(http://lists.x.org/archives/xorg-driver-geode) about the The RandR-unable to setrotation issue in AMD Geode LX platform. About the RandR-unable to set rotation issue. 1. Before 08/2008, our Geode-LX always use exaAllocOffscreen, but for update to Randr 1.2, Jordan Crouse replace exaAllocOffscreen with GeodeAllocOffscreen. The change: http://cgit.freedesktop.org/xorg/driver/xf86-video-geode/commit/?id=d681a844e448712a9a419d2a4dca81930d39a80a 2. In our xf86-video-geode driver, all of memories are allocated by GeodeAllocOffscreen, the exa offscreen memory is part of the memorySize. And the rotation data is not in memorySize, it is allocated after memorySize. 3. Communion with Maarten Maathuis (from Xorg-devel). In exaAllocOffscreen, rotateddata has to be allocated between memoryBase and memorySize. In GeodeAllocOffscreen, rotateddata is not in memorySize, it is allocated after memorySize. This is exactly the reason why exa doesn't recognize it. You can turn to the Xorg-driver-geode Mailing List to focus the schedule. Any other latest update, I will inform. Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xcursor-themes Ubuntu Lucid. xcursor-themes 1.0.2-1 Using the WhiteGlass cursor theme, the busy image is not aligned properly. With the standard arrow, the top left corner of the image is the click area, right? Whatever is under that corner when the button is pressed is activated. When the cursor changes to the busy image (the wristwatch) the click area moves to the right of the image (or, more precisely, the image moves to the left of the click area). One specific example I've noticed is the titlebar buttons. When the cursor has changed to the busy clock, if I position it over one button, I notice the button to the right of it prelit. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 541492] Re: MASTER: [i845] GPU lockup (apport-crash) (Should KMS be blacklisted?)
I've tried the driver from ppa:glasen/intel-driver on two identical machines with i845 (from Memory - not at them at present). One seems to now work fine and can even run Blender without crashing (which would instantly previously). It has the server kernel (server + gnome- desktop). On the other, a standard 10.04 desktop install (and Parents machine to hard to test on) - I'm not sure if the driver made things more stable as I had to revert due to a problem with pictures, usually photos in Firefox. The pictures would initially show as a black rectangle, but usually show the picture once moused over. Some showed a previous picture slightly offset. It looks to me like the initial texture coping is not working - and having the mouse cursor over that part of the screen forces an update. Here's hoping this info gives someone an 'A ha!' moment. :-) -- MASTER: [i845] GPU lockup (apport-crash) (Should KMS be blacklisted?) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/541492 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is the registrant for xf86-video-intel. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
