[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 446717] Re: [gm45] Adjusting Brightness in Acer Aspire Timelines causes system freeze in 4810T and 5810T models

2010-06-20 Thread Attilio
Hi everyone, I have an Acer 4810TG which is affected by this bug. I have 3 OSs
installed: Windows 7 64bit, Ubuntu 10.4 32bit and Fedora 13 64bit (KDE only),
and the bios version is 1.35 (released April 22nd).
The new bios didn't make any difference for me, otherwise here is what i could
observe:
-on W7, the brightness hotkeys do work, but not very accurately: i can
apparently set 10 different levels, but the lower three have the same
brightness, so that the last 2 keypresses when decreasing, and 2 when
increasing it cause no effect at all; furthermore i have no OSD feedback. These
glitches could be sign of poor support to W7 from Acer, I had Vista
preinstalled.
- On Ubuntu with the given workaround (nomodeset apci_backlight=vendor) the
controls work very well, ~20 levels with the nice OSD. Unfortunately this
cannot be done in F13, which requires KMS on intel cards.
- On Ubuntu and Fedora with desktop effects disabled, and default kernel
arguments (except i8042.nomux, needed for a touchpad bug), thus with KMS
enabled, i have a behavior similar to W7, but with even more inaccurate
control: the number of levels is not fixed, and i get an OSD which, at least on
Fedora, shows incorrect values. What's more interesting is that as soon as i
reactivate compositing everything freezes. In Ubuntu the only way to recover
control is to forcibly shut down the notebook, whilst in fedora i can restart
the X server (with ctrl+alt+back) but only start new sessions without
compositing, if i login to a user having it enabled i get stuck at the loading
splashscreen.
An interesting fact is that ANY OPENGL ACTIVITY seems to trigger the bug, not
only enabling desktop compositing but also starting glxgears for example
causes me a system freeze, although not always immediately.

I think this bug is not in compiz, but in kernel modesetting instead!
Unluckily I currently don't have the time to do much further testing,
such as some with the Radeon discrete GPU (i got some freezes with that
to, anyway).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 585765] Re: Ubuntu 10.04 random freezes

2010-06-20 Thread foobar
I downgraded the kernel to 2.6.32-22 since an update to 2.6.34 mainline
kernel did not help...

Since I dont login to the console of my server very often, most of the
time I use a ssh or vnc session, I cannot confirm that the freeze is
caused by gnome and firefox (flash) issues. Sometimes it just freezes
while copying files on a ssh session.

Frustrating, since I dont see anything inside the system logs.

seems to ahve gone away. Of note is that my BIOS is supposed to offer
667MHz memory support, but it is not shown as a selection int he BIOS
config. I have been running the system around-the-clock with
Thunderbird running for 48 hours without a freeze. Also of note is that
memtest86+ 4.10 (or the March 2010 verstion) does not run under Grub or
Grub2 on this system. I did run memory test as the bootable 4.10
version, and it passed.

  (from /var/log/syslog)

Here are the symptoms and what I tried so far:
  - booting on 2.6.32-22-generic yields to a black screen, all I can do is a
reboot with ctrl+alt+suppr. X fails to load (according to the logs). The EDID
error above appears several times in the log.
  - setting modeset=0 yields to a kernel panic (blinking caps lock led when
reaching the Ubuntu logo during boot). All I can do is a hard reboot. No EDID
error in the log, the last message is about loading the driver.
  - booting in failsafe mode works well (still with modeset=0). The console is
working properly. startx yields to a kernel panic, as above, but failsafeX
works (with the vesa driver).
  - booting on linux-image-2.6.31-21-generic works fine (of course, there is no
nouveau driver). X works with the nv driver, except color depth is limited (to
16 bits?). I've had EDID issues in the past with the proprietary nvidia driver,
too (but it is no longer installed).

I can provide logs for most of these situations but please tell me
exactly what you need or further test I should perform.

  Thank you very much.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 532436] Re: nvidia driver sometime does not load at boot

2010-06-20 Thread Manuel Bua
I just wanted to update from Jaunty to the latest and greatest LTS but i
heavily regret having done that.. fortunately i clonezill'ed the system before
the clean install.
But how such a problem slipped into an LTS?
I experience the same problem with any version of the nvidia drivers:
With a clean install ubuntu10.04-64:
  - tried ubuntu-supplied nvidia proprietary drivers, the problem arise;
  - tried x-swat repos, same problem;
  - tried nvidia-supplied .run packages, same problem with both 195.xx/256.xx;
It's much worse now, after a reboot it loose configuration settings for some
applications, this time gedit loose its entire preferences.. i just don't know
what's happening..

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 596594] [NEW] package nvidia-current 195.36.24-0ubuntu1~10.04 failed to install/upgrade: nvidia-current kernel module failed to build

2010-06-20 Thread Tasche
Public bug reported:

Fresh Install. Everything is clean.
All new hardware, everything is clean.

10.04 = problem - X server will not shut down among other issues I
believe.

9.04 = No problems like this.

I cannot even manually install the drivers in 10.04 (or any distro based
upon Ubuntu 10.04) because I cannot manually shut down X server - the
commands apparently changed going into 10.04 with no luck finding what
they changed to via Google. - among other hurdles.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 565407] Re: package fglrx (not installed) failed to install/upgrade: subprocess new pre-installation script returned error exit status 1 - inst_path_default or inst_path_override

2010-06-20 Thread ledzepjes
@ Jean-Baptiste Lallement
on 2010-06-14: #40
I have reproduced the problem with fglrx 2:8.723.1-0ubuntu3 and have verified
that the version of fglrx 2:8.723.1-0ubuntu4 in proposed fixes the issue.
Marking as verification-done.

I am experiencing this problem, upgraded Ubuntu 9.10 to 10.04 and I
can't even install the supposed fix, (fglrx 2:8.723.1-0ubuntu4)

When I run synaptic and install fglrx, I get this error:

/var/cache/apt/archives/fglrx_2%3a8.723.1-0ubuntu4_i386.deb: subprocess
new pre-installation script returned error exit status 1

If I click ok on the pop up, I see that fglrx-amdcccle is installed, but
fglrx itself isn't?

2010-06-20 Thread ledzepjes
Sorry, I misspoke, I do have fglrx 2:8.723.1-0ubuntu4 installed, looking
in synaptic, but I still can't install fglrx, even though my resolution
is very high and not 1024-768, which leads me to think a partial upgrade
happened somewhere along the way, but didn't fully install the ati
drivers, would my assumption be correct?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 565407] Re: package fglrx (not installed) failed to install/upgrade: subprocess new pre-installation script returned error exit status 1 - inst_path_default or inst_path_override

2010-06-20 Thread Mijail Rondon
i repair that following the steps of post #25 and #26

--
Gabriel Cuka wrote on 2010-05-08: | #25
--
I renamed the /usr/share/ati folder to /usr/share/ati_old, and after that the
installed completed.
Interesting: no new /usr/share/ati folder was created by the install.
Of course, ATI Catalyst no longer functions...

farge wrote on 2010-05-08: | #26

I can verify Gabriel Cuka's comment - renaming that directory allowed both the
repository fglrx package and the ATI-sourced package to install.

Renaming the /usr/lib/fglrx directory also fixed two installation
warnings about subdirectories not being able to be deleted.

Neither of these two steps, however, resulted in a functioning driver.

I wonder whether it's a kernel issue, since my display is garbled on
startup as well. Full 1440x900 resolution without acceleration when in
X, but the startup splash screen is garbled beyond recognition.

Ubuntu 10.04 x64, upgraded, ATI Radeon HD 5770

I have an ATI Radeon HD4870 and a resolution of 1600x900 and work to me.

2010-06-20 Thread ledzepjes
Yeah!!, I got my graphics working, after opening as administrator and
renaming /usr/share/ati to /usr/share/ati_old, thanks to #10 and #24,
also, after I renamed the folder, I went into synaptic, searched for
ati, and it showed xserver-xorg-video-ati and also xserver-xorg-
video-radeon as being installed, leading me to be able to have a high
resolution, but no compiz I am assuming, I then rebooted and activated
the ati driver in Hardware Drivers, and everything now works, thanks
guys for all your help. Maybe this will help someone else also.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 565407] Re: package fglrx (not installed) failed to install/upgrade: subprocess new pre-installation script returned error exit status 1 - inst_path_default or inst_path_override

2010-06-20 Thread ledzepjes
I need to clarify, I uninstalled the xserver-xorg-video-ati and
xserver-xorg-video-radeon packages from synaptic, not just searched
for them. Having two ati drivers packages installed was probably causing
errors and preventing me from installing fglrx, as well as having to
rename /usr/share/ati folder to /usr/share/ati_old all helped fix my
issue. Although now, I go into monitor, and it doesn't show what model
monitor I have, before it would display the model name of my monitor as
Viewsonic, I'm not complaining, that's really a mute point. I also had
two sets of ati ccc in the preferences menu, but fixed that by deleting
one set in the main menu configurator.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 541492] Re: MASTER: [i845] GPU lockup (apport-crash) (Should KMS be blacklisted?)

2010-06-20 Thread Tim Hallett
Installed the Glasenhart 855-drm patch (stable) and then the intel driver.
Improved overall stability and performance, but Google Earth still brought
system down, as did OpenGL screensavers with frequency. Then added Brian
Roger's Mesa fix, after which Google Earth functioned perfectly, although there
seem to still be intermittent freezes on some screensavers (of which I am only
aware of due to being unable to wake up the screen after screen OFF (assuming
system has frozen. REISUB is ineffective so it is a fairly deep fault rather
than with X). Which log files should I access at the next freeze to make a more
useful report? (specifically, which ones, and where are they located.
Would also installing the Rogers kernel build be advisable? O r should I leave
things as is for now?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 560180] Re: wacom buttons don't work/cause mouse to move to upper left corner and click.

2010-06-20 Thread Milan Knizek
I tried to apply the patch mentioned in #11:
http://www.mail-archive.com/linuxwacom-de...@lists.sourceforge.net/msg00736.html
to the current version of linuxwaxom in Lucid and recompiled the deb package.

The buttons on my Intuos3 work, but the left and right touchpad not -
nothing happens and keys assigned by xsetwacom for the touchpads are
ignored.

(Compiling from current git resulted in even worse behaviour - apart
from the touchpads, also the press of a button lead to positioning of
the cursor to left-top corner of the screen.)

Disabling visual effects (System - Preferences - Appearance - Visual
Effects) helped a bit, but image is still incorrect, when motion happens
on the screen, there are strange stripes around it. Anyway, I bought an
Nvidia card becaus was tired to fix the problems with that integrated
ATI shit.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 565407] Re: package fglrx (not installed) failed to install/upgrade: subprocess new pre-installation script returned error exit status 1 - inst_path_default or inst_path_override

2010-06-20 Thread ledzepjes
** Description changed:

  == DESCRIPTION ==
Installation of package fglrx failed with the following error:
  Unpacking fglrx (from .../fglrx_2%3a8.723.1-0ubuntu2_i386.deb) ...

  [Warning] Uninstall : inst_path_default or inst_path_override
does not exist in /etc/ati. This suggests that the ATI driver
is not installed, the ATI driver is only partially installed,
or the current ATI driver installed is an older version than the
one this script was designed for. Both files listed above are
required for determining where installed files are located.
To force uninstallation of the driver by guessing where the
uninstallation files are located, set the FORCE_ATI_UNINSTALL
environment variable and re-run /usr/share/ati/fglrx-uninstall.sh (this is
  not recommended).

  dpkg: error processing
  /var/cache/apt/archives/fglrx_2%3a8.723.1-0ubuntu2_i386.deb (--unpack):
subprocess new pre-installation script returned error exit status 1

The preinst script removes the /etc/ati directory _before_ running the
ATI's uninstallation script. Hence the later complains about it not
  being there anymore.

  TEST CASE:
  1. install the drivers from ATI (download the installer e.g
ati-driver-installer-10-3-x86.x86_64.run and run it )
  2. install the package from the Ubuntu repository
     $ sudo apt-get install fglrx
The installation crashes with the aforementioned error.
  3. purge fglrx
  4. reinstall the drivers from ATI (step 1)
  5. install fglrx from -proposed
  6. Verify that it install correctly and the drivers from ATI are removed.
-

  == WORKAROUND ==
  $ export FORCE_ATI_UNINSTALL=/usr/share/ati
  $ apt-get install fglrx

  OR

  - reinstall from the ATI installer to restore the /etc/ati directory
  - then uninstall with ATI script
  - finally installthe ubuntu package.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 541492] Re: MASTER: [i845] GPU lockup (apport-crash) (Should KMS be blacklisted?)

2010-06-20 Thread dbclinton
I installed the Glasenhart patch on my Edubuntu thin client server - two
of the clients have i845 chips. There was no improvement in the client
experience: it still makes it to the login screen but crashes as soon as
the user completes the login process. I haven't had the guts to install
Brian Roger's patched kernel yet (this is a production server).

I first added ppa:glasen/intel-driver to my repositories and then installed
libdrm (actually it was called libdrm2 - marked for upgrade - in my synaptic)
and xserver-xorg-video-intel (also marked for upgrade). I assume that would
have got the job done.
Is there something I missed?
Thanks

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 561802] Re: [lucid] [i915] blank screen on Latitude E6410

2010-06-20 Thread derf
Since others in this bug may not have seen it and it would have saved me
some Googling, the commit in http://lists.freedesktop.org/archives
/intel-gfx/2010-May/006948.html seems to be the source of the problem.
After reverting that commit, an otherwise vanilla 2.6.34 kernel works
for me on an E6510 with the i915 driver.

Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 596354] Re: Latest update broke Nvidia driver

2010-06-20 Thread DougWebb
I have found my tv tuner card was failing and causing occasional
lockups, one of which occurred during upgrade of the video driver. I
also found my video card air intakes were clogged with dust so I cleaned
them out as that may also have contributed to the problem. So with the
tv tuner removed and video card cleaned out I have re-installed ubuntu
and everything appears to be working.

This bug report can be closed now.

Thanks,
Doug Webb

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 583885] Re: Blank screen on resume with Mobility Radeon 9600 M10 (RV350)

2010-06-20 Thread Darren Hague
Same symptoms with an Acer TravelMate 8104 with ATI Mobility Radeon
X700.

Extra information: this was working perfectly until a few weeks ago, so
perhaps the bug was introduced in a recent kernel upgrade?

I tried downgrading the kernel from 2.6.32.23.24 to 2.6.32.22.23 (i.e.
from lucid-proposed to lucid-updates) with no luck. I'll try downgrading
further to 2.6.32.21.22 (lucid) to see if that helps.

If it's still broken, please attach the new /var/log/Xorg.0.log from

David,

What you suggested did not work. My notes and the file you requested are
attached.

I renamed xorg.conf to something else. Rebooted.

1. After logging on I note 'Unknown' marked in top left of the primary
monitor. Second monitor blank.
2. If I try and use gnome-display-manager, a dialog box appears with the text
It appears that your graphics driver does not support the necessary
extensions to use this tool. Do you want to use your graphics driver vendor's
tool instead?
3. If I choose No. Can't change any configuration.
4. If I choose Yes the dialog opens nVidia X Server Settings Tool but a
dialog that appears states You do not appear to be using the NVIDIA X driver.
Please edit your X configuration file (just run `nvidia-xconfig` as root), and
restart the X server.
5. I note that a new xorg.conf has not been created.
6. The details from the xorg.0.log are below. I have reinstated the previous
version of xorg.conf without trying to recreate a new xorg.conf or anything
else. Please advise me what you would like me to do.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 583885] Re: Blank screen on resume with Mobility Radeon 9600 M10 (RV350)

2010-06-20 Thread Darren Hague
Downgrading the kernel further didn't help.
It's only the screen that's blank - the keyboard is fine. In other words, I can
do a CTRL-ALT-F1 and although the screen stays blank, I can log in and shut
down cleanly (if I type very carefully!).
CTRL-ALT-F7 may well restart X/Windows (there is some disk activity when I do
this), but has no effect on the blank screen.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 585765] Re: Ubuntu 10.04 random freezes

2010-06-20 Thread ravas
Just adding a note that this affects me as well. Importance seems like
it should be pretty high.

Random freezes often occurring (minutes) after a default 10.04 install
on an Asus 1201N, 32bit, apt-get upgrade'd all including 2.6.31-22,
ext4, nvidia ION, Atom 330 dual-core, 2GB system with all on-board
components active via bios settings (webcam, wireless, LAN, card-reader,
USB controllers, etc) running latest ASUS 3.26 bios, NOT using nvidia
proprietary drivers, and networking via the realtek wireless.

System is essentially unusable.

Note: running 'sudo powertop' will freeze it every time.

Seems kernel related (apparently kernel panic; caps-lock LED blinking),
and perhaps related to acquiring of hardware stats/ACPI, although using
the built-in LAN (wireless off) seemed to help, where on wireless,
system froze in minutes; on built-in LAN, system ran fairly stable.
Perhaps removal of HAL in 10.04 is not quite baked?

No logs to add; typing this from win7 factory install (dual boot).

Thanks in advance for any resolution on this issue. My former eee 901
with 9.10 was rock solid and would love to continue running 10.04 on my
new fancy machine :) Will try the 'noapic nolapic acpi=off' options
since that may help.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 377929] Re: Unable to set rotation on AMD Geode LX800

2010-06-20 Thread Hunk Cui
Hi, Martin,

Now I am work with this issue, I have trace the key error point, you
can see my update in Xorg-driver-geode Mailing
List(http://lists.x.org/archives/xorg-driver-geode) about the The
RandR-unable to setrotation issue in AMD Geode LX platform.

About the RandR-unable to set rotation issue.
1. Before 08/2008, our Geode-LX always use exaAllocOffscreen, but for update to
Randr 1.2, Jordan Crouse replace exaAllocOffscreen with GeodeAllocOffscreen.
The change:
http://cgit.freedesktop.org/xorg/driver/xf86-video-geode/commit/?id=d681a844e448712a9a419d2a4dca81930d39a80a

2. In our xf86-video-geode driver, all of memories are allocated by
GeodeAllocOffscreen, the exa offscreen memory is part of the memorySize. And
the rotation data is not in memorySize, it is allocated after memorySize.

3. Communion with Maarten Maathuis (from Xorg-devel).
In exaAllocOffscreen, rotateddata has to be allocated between memoryBase and
memorySize.
In GeodeAllocOffscreen, rotateddata is not in memorySize, it is allocated after
memorySize.

This is exactly the reason why exa doesn't recognize it.

You can turn to the Xorg-driver-geode Mailing List to focus the schedule.
Any other latest update, I will inform.

Thanks,
Hunk Cui

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 596717] [NEW] Whiteglass busy cursor is not aligned properly

2010-06-20 Thread McIvor
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xcursor-themes

Ubuntu Lucid.
xcursor-themes 1.0.2-1
Using the WhiteGlass cursor theme, the busy image is not aligned properly. With
the standard arrow, the top left corner of the image is the click area,
right? Whatever is under that corner when the button is pressed is activated.
When the cursor changes to the busy image (the wristwatch) the click area
moves to the right of the image (or, more precisely, the image moves to the
left of the click area).
One specific example I've noticed is the titlebar buttons. When the cursor has
changed to the busy clock, if I position it over one button, I notice the
button to the right of it prelit. (I can attach a screenshot if needed.)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 541492] Re: MASTER: [i845] GPU lockup (apport-crash) (Should KMS be blacklisted?)

2010-06-20 Thread Nigel Atkinson
I've tried the driver from ppa:glasen/intel-driver on two identical
machines with i845 (from Memory - not at them at present). One seems to
now work fine and can even run Blender without crashing (which would
instantly previously). It has the server kernel (server + gnome-
desktop).

On the other, a standard 10.04 desktop install (and Parents machine to
hard to test on) - I'm not sure if the driver made things more stable as
I had to revert due to a problem with pictures, usually photos in
Firefox. The pictures would initially show as a black rectangle, but
usually show the picture once moused over. Some showed a previous
picture slightly offset. It looks to me like the initial texture coping
is not working - and having the mouse cursor over that part of the
screen forces an update.

Here's hoping this info gives someone an 'A ha!' moment. :-)

Yes, you also need the fixed kernel modules from ppa:glasen/855gm-fix

@Nigel
Yes I have the same behavior with flash-embedded photos in Firefox as well.
IIRC it goes way if the 855 experimental modules are used. Also, the GL
screensavers will still take down the system intermittently.
