[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 479323] Re: External monitor suddenly gets wrong resolution on laptop (nvidia).
I'm experiencing quite the same bug. On a Dell Vostro 1500 (NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT), I have an external monitor with maximum resolution 1280x1024. The strange thing is that it's not happening every time I plug it in, but it happens randomly. In this moment, I'm looking at the external monitor, with the 1280x1024 resolution. Yesterday, for example, there was a moment when the resolution was not correctly set, and I found myself with a 1440x900 resolution fit in a 1024x768 (the screen moved as I moved my mouse - hope this is understandable, I'm Italian). Rebooting fixed it (although maybe at next reboot I'll find myself with the wrong resolution). greping /var/log/Xorg.* searching for EDID didn't show any result, but get-edid|parse-edid shows problems (I'm attaching the complete output): [some text..] VBE/DDC service about to be called Read EDID Performing real mode VBE call Interrupt 0x10 ax=0x4f15 bx=0x1 cx=0x0 Function supported Call failed The EDID data should not be trusted as the VBE call failed EDID claims 32 more blocks left *** Something special has happened! Me too, also with a GX260. dmesg shows streams of errors such as: [97544.908019] [drm:i915_hangcheck_elapsed] *ERROR* Hangcheck timer elapsed... [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 572550] Re: Panel utilities not shown on startup using Matrox gfx with compiz
Changing the theme just helped me out for a moment as the bug reappeared after a reboot/restart. Additionally I tried to apply an automated restore of the genome panel defaults with an script, based on BitHacker's tool (se: http://bithacker.blogspot.com/2010/05/restore-default-gnome-panels-in-ubuntu.html). Here's my mod which disabled all questions and restores both the top and the bottom panel: #!/bin/sh # Originally from: PanelRestore # # GNOME Panel Save / Restore # Writen by PhrankDaChicken # # http://ubuntu.online02.com # # # Updated to add restore defaults by jimjimovich # http://www.starryhope.com # # # Modified to be Autostart capable by: # Michl Schmid # Allgaeuer Kraftwerke GmbH # Am Alten Bahnhof 10 # # D-87521 Sonthofen # # mailto:m.sch...@allgaeukraft.de # http://www.allgaeukraft.de # gconftool-2 --recursive-unset /apps/panel rm -rf ~/.gconf/apps/panel pkill gnome-panel The problem herein is that the tool only works properly as long as it's started after the GNOME Desktop has been completely started. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 589940] Re: [arrandale] maverick alpha 1 live doesn't display desktop
Glen, as I said in comment #1, it is expected behaviour that things go wrong if you use the nomodeset kernel option. The intel driver in Maverick needs modeset support in the kernel and nomodeset turns that support off. All the files you uploaded contains logs from this expected failure and is therefore not useful. There are many ways to extract log files from a computer with a black screen. Some of them require some trial-and-error in front of the computer, but one that is easy to explain is: 1. Install the package openssh-server to allow remote login into the computer. 2. (LiveCD-specific) Set a password for the ubuntu user using the command `sudo passwd` 3. ssh in from another computer (using ubuntu as username on a LiveCD system) 4. Save /var/log/Xorg.0.log, dmesg.txt created from `dmesg dmesg.txt`, and the xrandr.txt created from `xrandr xrandr.txt` on a usb-stick or copy them to the other computer with scp. That failsafe X does not show the filename of the tarball is an unrelated issue. I have reported it as bug 596819 and subscribed you to the bug report. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 549645] Re: Summary of sis graphics bugreports
Shouldn't this bug report be closed as this is more a more a howto for common bugs with the sis driver and a dupplicate of multiple bugs? ** Description changed: Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-sis Since there are several reports on these bugs in xserver-xorg-driver-sis I give a summary of the reported problems and some of the suggested solutions. SIS does not provide all required information to make good drivers for all SIS graphical cards. Hence you might meet problems with some monitors (resolutions, modes) and you will not get 3D acceleration. - bug 1: The driver sis available in Ubuntu (Karmic) does not function well for all SIS graphical cards (e.g. see bugs 523749, 301958, 281454, 291294, etc and various questions) - Minor bug 2: In man sis the link http://www.winischhofer.AT/linuxsisvga.shtml should be replaced by http://www.winischhofer.net/linuxsisvga.shtml + 1: The driver sis available in Ubuntu (Karmic) does not function well + for all SIS graphical cards (e.g. see bug 523749, bug 301958, bug + 281454, bug 291294, etc and various questions) + 2: In man sis the link http://www.winischhofer.AT/linuxsisvga.shtml + should be replaced by http://www.winischhofer.net/linuxsisvga.shtml Discussions on internet, especially Ubuntuforums show that many, sometimes conflicting, advices are given which seem to work for only part of the users. The following advices are given: - Check http://www.winischhofer.net/linuxsispart1.shtml#12 for supported SiS/XGI graphics chips and video bridges. - Also check what input is used by the monitor. If you have a choice between analog and digital input you may have to use analog (see tables on the same link which show that for higher resolutions only analog works). For that you use a VGA plug (15 pin D-sub). It is found on most (if not all) machines including laptops for primary VGA output, thus driven by CRT1. If it is not present you may need a DVI-VGA adapter or to remove some pins. - It may be necessary to configure /etc/X11/xorg.conf. If you do not have this file you can generate one with Xorg -configure while gdm is not active. Do this before installing new drivers and check for modifications after installing new drivers. Especially the choice of the driver in the Section Device may be important. E.g.: Section Device - Identifier devname # your device - Driver sis # or sisimedia or sis671 + Identifier devname # your device + Driver sis # or sisimedia or sis671 - It may be necessary to reduce Shared Memory in the BIOS (see bug 291294 https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video- sis/+bug/291294) - If needed, download the drivers sisimedia and/or sis671 from - http://ncc-1701a.homelinux.net/~linux-sis/index.php?page=Downloads (Available in Lucid?) + http://ncc-1701a.homelinux.net/~linux-sis/index.php?page=Downloads (Available in Lucid?) - When you switch monitors it may be needed to completely remove (purge) one of the sis-drivers and reinstall it and/or to reconfigure xorg.conf and/or the BIOS (e.g. see bug 523749). - The sisfb module is mentioned also. E.g.(Bug #264769): sudo modprobe sisfb AND edit your xorg.conf at: Section Device add there an: Option UseFBDev true Another example: add video=sisfb as kernel argument on menu.list and later grub.cfg (Bug #530554). - Another example: add sisfb in /etc/modules + Another example: add sisfb in /etc/modules My tip: Before you take any actions read man sis, visit http://www.winischhofer.net/linuxsispart1.shtml#12 and https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Video, and search ubuntuforums and launchpad with sis graphics and the name of your version of Ubuntu to check your method. Remember that tips may not be valid in your case because the hardware and software configuration of your pc may not be equal to that of the tipper. ** Tags added: likely-dup ** Tags removed: metabug ** Changed in: xserver-xorg-video-sis (Ubuntu) Status: Confirmed = Incomplete -- Summary of sis graphics bugreports https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/549645 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-sis in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

@Tim Thanks for the correction. However, I see that 855gm-fix-exp-dkms comes with a bit of a threat of its own: Stability may suffer with this version. If you experience frequent crashes than please install the non-exp-version of this package. And 855gm-fix-dkms isn't perfect either: Known side-effect is a slowdown of some Gtk+-functions. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 503393] Re: xserver freeze after a few reboots
apport information ** Description changed: Binary package hint: xorg This is new to Karmic. I have not had this problem before. I first tried to go into a virtual console using Alt+F1 etc. The system froze. It could not be contacted by another machine on the network. I reformatted twice and performed a clean install. After a few successful boots, X server would stop loading. The screen would go blank and the system would freeze leaving no option but to do a hard reboot. I was able to do a startx from a recovery console (by getting into it using the shift key during the bootloader stage). The attached Xorg.0.log.old captures the problem when the X server gives up. After some attempts, it may randomly decide to load up again. No reason that I can make out I have experienced some screen freezes in jaunty (32 bit *not* 64-bit). I have never experienced this with Hardy *ever*, in which I installed the proprietary fglrx drivers. But Karmic has been unstable in this respect from Day 1. I have no choice but to go back to jaunty, or look for another distribution or hope that someone advises me how to get around this, since work is severely affected. I am also attaching a gdm log of today just in case it helps. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 596943] [NEW] xorg uses too high resolution by default
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xorg After I installed the nvidia drivers, Xorg used 1600x1200 at the next reboot -- which was too high for my monitor. I'm not sure what package to blame here. Should it automatically detect what resolutions my monitor support? Also, why does it use the highest possible solution? I don't want that. I have worked around that problem for now by specifying a list of resolutions in the xorg.conf file. However, that is not really a nice solution because I would rather want to find all resolutions automatically and only disallow everything =1600x1200.
