[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 479323] Re: External monitor suddenly gets wrong resolution on laptop (nvidia).

2010-06-21 Thread Claudio Moretti
I'm experiencing quite the same bug.
On a Dell Vostro 1500 (NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT), I have an external monitor
with maximum resolution 1280x1024.
The strange thing is that it's not happening every time I plug it in, but it
happens randomly.
In this moment, I'm looking at the external monitor, with the 1280x1024
resolution. Yesterday, for example, there was a moment when the resolution was
not correctly set, and I found myself with a 1440x900 resolution fit in a
1024x768 (the screen moved as I moved my mouse - hope this is understandable,
I'm Italian).
Rebooting fixed it (although maybe at next reboot I'll find myself with the
wrong resolution).

greping /var/log/Xorg.* searching for EDID didn't show any result, but
get-edid|parse-edid shows problems (I'm attaching the complete
output):

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 578078] Re: regular system freezes with KMS on rc410 ati video chip

2010-06-21 Thread John Gilmore
I am experiencing bug #550850 (which is also duplicated several times),
whose main symptom is garbled screen output followed at some length by a
crash in compiz, with the error message Failed to parse relocation
-12! in dmesg. There may be a correlation between these two bugs.
Altogether I found five bugs which included this string, and four of
them were the same bug (I marked them as dups, except this one).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 566324] Re: Xorg crash

2010-06-21 Thread Henry Wertz
Me too, also with a GX260. dmesg shows streams of errors such as:
[97544.908019] [drm:i915_hangcheck_elapsed] *ERROR* Hangcheck timer elapsed...
GPU hung
[97544.908032] render error detected, EIR: 0x
[97544.908056] [drm:i915_do_wait_request] *ERROR* i915_do_wait_request returns
-5 (awaiting 6540 at 6213)
when this happens. I think this is why the Failed to submit batchbuffer:
Input/output error occurs within XOrg, the GPU indeed is hung. I have ssh on
this box and can verify that other than XOrg going into a restart loop and
burning a few CPU cycles (until I run sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop) everything
else is unaffected. If anyone has a patch to try, I have a head on this box
but mostly treat it as headless, so I'm in a good position to try out patches.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 572550] Re: Panel utilities not shown on startup using Matrox gfx with compiz

2010-06-21 Thread Michl
Changing the theme just helped me out for a moment as the bug reappeared
after a reboot/restart.

Additionally I tried to apply an automated restore of the genome panel defaults
with an script, based on BitHacker's tool (se:
http://bithacker.blogspot.com/2010/05/restore-default-gnome-panels-in-ubuntu.html).
Here's my mod which disabled all questions and restores both the top and the
bottom panel:

gconftool-2 --recursive-unset /apps/panel
rm -rf ~/.gconf/apps/panel
pkill gnome-panel

The problem herein is that the tool only works properly as long as it's started
after the GNOME Desktop has been completely started. Right now I haven't
found the right position in the GNOME autostart chain to launch the modified
script automatically, yet.

Hope someone finds a solution in the near future... :-)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 596819] [NEW] Failsafe X displays variable name instead of file name for debugging tarball

2010-06-21 Thread Geir Ove Myhr
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

As reported in https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-
video-intel/+bug/589940/comments/3 , when failsafe X is triggered by
using the nomodeset kernel option on intel hardware (which leads to an
expected failure on Maverick), the failsafe X dialog displays:

Relevant configuration and log files have been saved to:
  $xorg_backup_file

In this particular case the expected behaviour is that $xorg_backup_file
should have been expanded to /var/log/failsafeX-backup-100619201009.tar.

I haven't tried to reproduce this, since I currently don't have Maverick
installation up and running.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 589940] Re: [arrandale] maverick alpha 1 live doesn't display desktop

2010-06-21 Thread Geir Ove Myhr
Glen, as I said in comment #1, it is expected behaviour that things go
wrong if you use the nomodeset kernel option. The intel driver in
Maverick needs modeset support in the kernel and nomodeset turns that
support off. All the files you uploaded contains logs from this expected
failure and is therefore not useful.

There are many ways to extract log files from a computer with a black screen.
Some of them require some trial-and-error in front of the computer, but one
that is easy to explain is:
1. Install the package openssh-server to allow remote login into the computer.
2. (LiveCD-specific) Set a password for the ubuntu user using the command `sudo
passwd`
3. ssh in from another computer (using ubuntu as username on a LiveCD system)
4. Save /var/log/Xorg.0.log, dmesg.txt created from `dmesg dmesg.txt`, and the
xrandr.txt created from `xrandr xrandr.txt` on a usb-stick or copy them to
the other computer with scp.

That failsafe X does not show the filename of the tarball is an
unrelated issue. I have reported it as bug 596819 and subscribed you to
the bug report. You may add any information that I failed to include.

I suppose this has a similar cause than the current cups problem in
upstart. So it may be a duplicate of #554172.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 280465] Re: Ctrl+Alt+Fn (where n=1 through 12) crashes desktop and forces new login.

2010-06-21 Thread papukaija
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. We are sorry that we do not always have the capacity to look at all
reported bugs in a timely manner.
There have been many changes in Ubuntu since that time you reported the bug and
your problem may have been fixed with some of the updates. It would help us a
lot if you could test the current Ubuntu development version (10.10) or at
least in Lucid (10.04). If you can test it, and it is still an issue, we would
appreciate if you could upload updated logs by running apport-collect 280465,
and any other logs that are relevant for this particular issue.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 549645] Re: Summary of sis graphics bugreports

2010-06-21 Thread papukaija
Shouldn't this bug report be closed as this is more a more a howto for
common bugs with the sis driver and a dupplicate of multiple bugs?

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-sis

Since there are several reports on these bugs in xserver-xorg-driver-sis
I give a summary of the reported problems and some of the suggested
solutions. SIS does not provide all required information to make good
drivers for all SIS graphical cards. Hence you might meet problems with
some monitors (resolutions, modes) and you will not get 3D acceleration.

- bug 1: The driver sis available in Ubuntu (Karmic) does not function well for
all SIS graphical cards (e.g. see bugs 523749, 301958, 281454, 291294, etc and
various questions)
- Minor bug 2: In man sis the link
http://www.winischhofer.AT/linuxsisvga.shtml should be replaced by
http://www.winischhofer.net/linuxsisvga.shtml
+ 1: The driver sis available in Ubuntu (Karmic) does not function well
+ for all SIS graphical cards (e.g. see bug 523749, bug 301958, bug
+ 281454, bug 291294, etc and various questions)

+ 2: In man sis the link http://www.winischhofer.AT/linuxsisvga.shtml
+ should be replaced by http://www.winischhofer.net/linuxsisvga.shtml

Discussions on internet, especially Ubuntuforums show that many, sometimes
conflicting, advices are given which seem to work for only part of the users.
The following advices are given:
  - Check http://www.winischhofer.net/linuxsispart1.shtml#12 for supported
SiS/XGI graphics chips and video bridges.

  - Also check what input is used by the monitor. If you have a choice
between analog and digital input you may have to use analog (see tables
on the same link which show that for higher resolutions only analog
works). For that you use a VGA plug (15 pin D-sub). It is found on most
(if not all) machines including laptops for primary VGA output, thus
driven by CRT1. If it is not present you may need a DVI-VGA adapter or
  to remove some pins.

  - It may be necessary to configure /etc/X11/xorg.conf. If you do not have
this file you can generate one with Xorg -configure while gdm is not active. Do
this before installing new drivers and check for modifications after installing
new drivers. Especially the choice of the driver in the Section Device may be
important. E.g.:
  Section Device
- Identifier devname # your device
- Driver sis # or sisimedia or sis671
+  Identifier devname # your device
+  Driver sis # or sisimedia or sis671

  - It may be necessary to reduce Shared Memory in the BIOS (see bug
  291294 https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-
  sis/+bug/291294)

  - If needed, download the drivers sisimedia and/or sis671 from
- http://ncc-1701a.homelinux.net/~linux-sis/index.php?page=Downloads
(Available in Lucid?)
(Available in Lucid?)

  - When you switch monitors it may be needed to completely remove (purge)
one of the sis-drivers and reinstall it and/or to reconfigure xorg.conf
  and/or the BIOS (e.g. see bug 523749).

  - The sisfb module is mentioned also. E.g.(Bug #264769):
  sudo modprobe sisfb
  AND
  edit your xorg.conf
  at:
  Section Device add there an:
  Option UseFBDev true
Another example: add video=sisfb as kernel argument on menu.list and later
grub.cfg (Bug #530554).
- Another example: add sisfb in /etc/modules
+ Another example: add sisfb in /etc/modules

My tip: Before you take any actions read man sis, visit
  http://www.winischhofer.net/linuxsispart1.shtml#12 and
  https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Video, and search ubuntuforums and
launchpad with sis graphics and the name of your version of Ubuntu to
check your method. Remember that tips may not be valid in your case
because the hardware and software configuration of your pc may not be
equal to that of the tipper.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 557756] Re: no/ugly Plymouth bootscreen with SiS graphics card

2010-06-21 Thread papukaija
Confirming this bug during the boot time after that there is no more a
black horizontal bar near the top screen, the top part should actully be
the bottom part of the screen). A screenshot is available at http://www
.fotos-hochladen.net/lucidsplitscreenfhny563d.jpg but i haven't tested
if it also happens in the recovery mode's menu.

Btw, this bug is affecting 4 people and no one hasn't confirmed this
bug?

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-sis

When I boot Lucid on my notebook with SiS graphics card I'm not only
getting the divided screen outside of X but also a very ugly Plymouth
screen showing only 4 colors (screenshot: http://forum.kubuntu-
de.org/index.php?topic=13621). I also get the error message mountall:
  could not connect to Plymouth.

When I add sisfb to /etc/modules and use video=sisfb added to the
kernel parameters I get a normal non-divided screen and instead the
message could not write bytes: Broken pipe - and no Plymouth
bootscreen at all. On shutdown I get the Plymouth screen in full color.
-
- For lspci-info etc. please look at Bug #521018.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 557756] Re: no/ugly Plymouth bootscreen with SiS graphics card

2010-06-21 Thread papukaija
Btw, I'm using the normal Ubuntu, not Kubuntu.

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-sis

When I boot Lucid on my notebook with SiS graphics card I'm not only
getting the divided screen outside of X but also a very ugly Plymouth
screen showing only 4 colors (screenshot: http://forum.kubuntu-
de.org/index.php?topic=13621). I also get the error message mountall:
  could not connect to Plymouth.

When I add sisfb to /etc/modules and use video=sisfb added to the
kernel parameters I get a normal non-divided screen and instead the
message could not write bytes: Broken pipe - and no Plymouth
bootscreen at all. On shutdown I get the Plymouth screen in full color.
+
+
+ A screenshot is available at
http://www.fotos-hochladen.net/lucidsplitscreenfhny563d.jpg but I haven't
tested if it also happens in the recovery mode's menu.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 541492] Re: MASTER: [i845] GPU lockup (apport-crash) (Should KMS be blacklisted?)

2010-06-21 Thread dbclinton
@Tim
Thanks for the correction. However, I see that 855gm-fix-exp-dkms comes with a
bit of a threat of its own:

Stability may suffer with this version. If you experience frequent
crashes than please install the non-exp-version of this package.

And 855gm-fix-dkms isn't perfect either:

Known side-effect is a slowdown of some Gtk+-functions.

I think I need more information to be comfortable committing to this
fix. In particular, what does Gtk control?

Thanks

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 578224] Re: [radeon driver] (regression) poor video decoding performance

2010-06-21 Thread madbiologist
Hmm, interesting.

This sounds a bit like John Bridgman's comment which I pasted in the
first part of comment #6.

I have a Radeon 9800 Pro 128Mb. I'm using KMS and can play videos fine
so there must be more to this than just colour tiling.

It would be interesting to know what the difference is between the
openSUSE 11.3 rc1 and the kernel 2.6.34 + X Server ver. 1.8.1 rc1 that
you tried. Perhaps the Mesa version? Or the xserver-xorg-video-ati
driver version? Were you using the Ubuntu xorg-edgers PPA?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 592783] Re: page fault on read access in libgl.so.1

2010-06-21 Thread Felix Kuehling
The problem sounds like it's using the wrong version of libGL.so.1.
Check the output of ldd /usr/bin/fgl_glxgears for example. If it uses
libGL.so.1 from /usr/lib, that's wrong. If you're using the Ubuntu
packages of fglrx, it should be using /usr/lib/fglrx/libGL.so.1 and
there should be no /usr/lib/libGL.so*.

First, the magicmouse drivers are unsupported in Ubuntu 10.04 LTS.

That said, this is likely an Xorg evdev module issue. Something may be
misconfigured, or there may be a bug.

and restart X (reboot the computer).

The bug come from a too low hsync value for this (not recognized)
screen. I don't think it would be a trident-specific issue.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 503393] Re: xserver freeze after a few reboots

2010-06-21 Thread pramathesh ambasta
apport information

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: xorg

This is new to Karmic. I have not had this problem before. I first tried
to go into a virtual console using Alt+F1 etc. The system froze. It
could not be contacted by another machine on the network. I reformatted
twice and performed a clean install. After a few successful boots, X
server would stop loading. The screen would go blank and the system
would freeze leaving no option but to do a hard reboot. I was able to do
a startx from a recovery console (by getting into it using the shift key
during the bootloader stage). The attached Xorg.0.log.old captures the
problem when the X server gives up.

After some attempts, it may randomly decide to load up again. No reason
  that I can make out

I have experienced some screen freezes in jaunty (32 bit *not* 64-bit).
I have never experienced this with Hardy *ever*, in which I installed
  the proprietary fglrx drivers.

But Karmic has been unstable in this respect from Day 1. I have no
choice but to go back to jaunty, or look for another distribution or
hope that someone advises me how to get around this, since work is
  severely affected.

I am also attaching a gdm log of today just in case it helps.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 596943] [NEW] xorg uses too high resolution by default

2010-06-21 Thread Albert Zeyer
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

After I installed the nvidia drivers, Xorg used 1600x1200 at the next
reboot -- which was too high for my monitor.

I'm not sure what package to blame here. Should it automatically detect
what resolutions my monitor support?

Also, why does it use the highest possible solution? I don't want that.

I have worked around that problem for now by specifying a list of
resolutions in the xorg.conf file. However, that is not really a nice
solution because I would rather want to find all resolutions
automatically and only disallow everything =1600x1200.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 565407] Re: package fglrx (not installed) failed to install/upgrade: subprocess new pre-installation script returned error exit status 1 - inst_path_default or inst_path_override

2010-06-21 Thread Jean-Baptiste Lallement
@ledzepjes: I really can't reproduce the problem with the latest fglrx
in -updates and upgrading from a fresh Karmic with both proprietary
drivers and Ubuntu package installed. Could you please file another
report with the command ubuntu-bug fglrx and attach the files in
/var/log/dist-upgrade/ from your upgrade from karmic. Add a comment here
with the bug number. Thanks in advance.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 578224] Re: [radeon driver] (regression) poor video decoding performance

2010-06-21 Thread Хаджиев
Though I made a clean reinstall of Ubuntu because of the experimental
state of xorg-edgers' PPA packages, I'll retest and see again what is
the situation now.

I'm going to update the packages from:

1. 2.6.35-rc3 - http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-
ppa/mainline/v2.6.35-rc3-maverick/linux-
image-2.6.35-020635rc3-generic_2.6.35-020635rc3_i386.deb

Is that on lucid? I think that you still need to do as suggested in
comment 6.
