[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 616197] [NEW] NVIDIA driver fails to load on boot 75% of time
Public bug reported: I have a Dell E6510 laptop containing an NVIDIA 3100M card. I'm running 32 bit Ubuntu Lucid (10.04), using the proprietary NVIDIA driver provided with Lucid (nouveau doesn't yet work with this card). About 75% of the time the machine fails to boot - after 3-4 seconds, and without showing anything on the screen (text or graphical), it hangs with a black screen with a flashing text-mode cursor. Pressing Ctrl-Alt-F7 (or any other keys) has no effect. The Xorg.log shows: Fatal server error: no screens found However, roughly once in every 4 attempts (varies widely) I see messages on the screen about ureadahead and plymouthd having been killed by the OOM killer, and the machine boots correctly and functions without problem. This happens with both the drivers provided with Lucid, and the latest drivers directly from NVIDIA. It's been suggested on the NVIDIA forums that this may be a timing issue. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 616214] [NEW] Should Depend: on appropriate xserver-xorg-video-$ABI
Public bug reported: The nvidia-current package does not depend on any particular server ABI, allowing it to be installed onto an incompatible X server. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 541511] Re: MASTER: [i855] GPU lockup (apport-crash)
FYI Installed Fedora 13, Kernel 2.6.33.6-147.2.4.fc13.i686 on my Let's note Panasonic CF-W2 with Int(h)el(l) i855 GPU. It installed without a glitch (live CD) and runs like a Swiss watch. Not to mention among other things: there is no Mono crap, default UID is 002 (vs Debian Ubuntu 022), the distro is very polished, a lot less eye candy. An overall nice and unexpected surprise. The latest Ubuntu releases have been a disappointment and a very bad experience on my hardware (3 older notebooks). Fedora 13 on the same hardware run fine. This might be different with a recent hardware, but for those annoyed with the grub2, kernel boot settings, ppa kernel to install, etc... simply install a distribution, you might want to give the Fedora 13 live CD a try. -- MASTER: [i855] GPU lockup (apport-crash) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/541511 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is the registrant for xf86-video-intel. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

apport information ** Tags added: apport-collected ** Description changed: Binary package hint: xorg When using the Madcatz Cyborg R.A.T. 7 mouse, Xorg will lock the focus to a single window. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 541511] Re: MASTER: [i855] GPU lockup (apport-crash)
The V9 kernel patch does in fact let me run Lucid on my Intel 855GME based laptop, which I coudn't before. However, even though xvinfo shows the X-Video Extension with Video Overlay the performance is down relative to Karmic. Both can do 720P video, but Karmic can just keep up with 1080 and Lucid cannot. On the 1080 video on Karmic I see Xorg at 12% of the cpu with 20% idle headroom. On the 1080 video on Lucid I see Xorg at 38% of the cpu with 0% idle and it can't keep up. Any thoughts of why the difference? I can post Xorg logs if that would be helpful.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 615925] Re: x wont start after latest update nvidia altarnate error
could this be the reason... https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-x/2010-August/000931.html Summary for the impatient: A new X server is soon to be uploaded which requires all the drivers to be rebuilt. Be careful when upgrading in the next few days. As promised earlier in the cycle, we've got the second X server transition coming up. This will take us to X server 1.9, which features improvements to startup time, some memory usage improvements, and many DRI2 fixes. The 1.9 server has a new input and video ABI which means existing driver packages will break. The server needs to be uploaded first so the new drivers build against the correct ABI, which means that there will be a period where safe upgrades will have held-back packages. The dependencies should ensure that you won't accidentally get a non-working combination of X server and drivers, but be careful if an upgrade wants to remove X packages. Happy testing! -- x wont start after latest update nvidia altarnate error https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/615925 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to nvidia-graphics-drivers in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

The nouveau driver in maverick has always supported many of the desktop effects like transparency and shadows. I don't think these required 3D support. Remove them? I still have even: xserver-xorg-video-nouveau, 1:0.0.15+git20100219+9b4118d-0ubuntu5 xserver-xorg-video-nv, 1:2.1.15-1ubuntu3 Should I remove those as well? There's no reason to remove any of them. They're not used, they don't interfere with the binary nVidia drivers, and they take up negligible space. signature.asc Description: This is a digitally signed message part ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 615549] Re: [Maverick] Dell Studio XPS 13 no video
VGA switcheroo, race conditions, vesafb, oh my! You say “I lose the video when Nouveau is loaded”, but nouveau isn't loaded until 20 seconds into your boot and doesn't start modesetting until 22 seconds. Did you mean “I lose the video right after GRUB starts loading the kernel”? If so, we have the first bug: vesafb being confused in some way by your multiple graphics cards. In chronological order, then, we encounter the second bug: X starts at approximately +20seconds, and is probing DRM at 20.625. However, the nouveau kernel driver is busy trying to get the video bios at this point, and hasn't finished initialising. Nouveau finishes bringing up your 9200M GS (which looks like it should be driving the VGA output at this point) at +22 seconds, and then brings up the 9400M G at +25 seconds. By this time, the nouveau X driver has given up looking for DRM, the VESA X driver has loaded and started merrily stomping on card state of the 9400M, which would be my guess as to why the nouveau kernel module bails soon after with a bunch of [ 25.465878] [drm] nouveau :03:00.0: PFIFO_INTR 0x0010 - Ch 1 errors. I'd guess that this race condition is why it is reported by some that restarting gdm fixes things - by that point the nouveau kernel module will actually have initialised and be ready for the nouveau X driver. -- [Maverick] Dell Studio XPS 13 no video https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/615549 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-nouveau in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

Okay, I took a look through the kcontrol settings, and saw that it was set to use OpenGL. Changed compositing type to XRender and everything seems to work. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 553415] Re: mouse trapped in box for Open Motif
Quick pedantic note (since I received questions about it): this is not fixed in the 1.7.6-2ubuntu7.3 lucid-proposed release that superseded the patched build in my ppa. I'll upload a 7.4~ppa0 as soon as I can. Is there any sort of status update on the SRU request? I was contacted by a developer of an application used by thousands of scientists around the world whose program is killed by this bug. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 578224] Re: [radeon driver] (regression) poor video decoding performance
I'm not an Ubuntu package maintainer but a backport to Lucid is probably unlikely as it would fall outside the definition of an SRU. You can monitor the package status at https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source /xserver-xorg-video-ati You will probably need to keep using the PPA you mentioned in comment 15. The new radeon driver is already in Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat alpha 3 if you want to test the live CD. -- [radeon driver] (regression) poor video decoding performance https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/578224 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-ati in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

Chris: did you follow all the Procedure steps for SRU in https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates ? I just looked for people to ping so we can get this in, but it looks like it doesn't have the needed info in the bug description, or ubuntu-sru subscribed to the bug. -- mouse trapped in box for Open Motif https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/553415 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg-server in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
