The numbers below are measured with glxgears.
Lucid w/ KMS: ~2500 frames in 5 seconds.
Lucid w/o KMS: ~5500 frames in 5 seconds.
Maverick w/ KMS: ~300 frames in 5 seconds.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 623732] [NEW] xset dpms force on, not working properly with fglrx

2010-08-24 Thread jamey0824
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: fglrx

Note I originally report this here
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/fglrx-installer/+bug/528636
but they closed it before i could get lucid running on my machine, due to
another fglrx bug. Anyways here's the bug

sleep 1; xset dpms force off ; sleep 10; xset dpms force on

expected behavior:
turn off screen , wait 10 secs , turn back on

fglrx behavior;
turn off screen , wait 10 secs , then goes into standby"i think"

have confirmed this behavior with others, and also have verified it works using
other drivers.
UPDATE: Still the same behavior in LUCID, with all versions of fglrx up to
current.

2010-08-24 Thread Luke J Militello
Sadly, I just had a crash. :(

Although, it is very rare as compared to before. In fact this was the
only time I moved the mouse to wake it up. Every other time has been
via keyboard. Perhaps, once again, mouse movement has something to do
with it. I will test this out over the next few weeks.

  Binary package hint: fglrx

  [Environment]
  * You are using fglrx restricted driver from Ubuntu repository or download
the linux driver from AMD ATI website (fglrx version <= 8.723.1-0ubuntu3).
  * If your ATI card is listed in the following pdf, then your desktop
behaviours will most likely be affected the 'bugs' listed in [Symptoms] section.

https://a248.e.akamai.net/f/674/9206/0/www2.ati.com/drivers/linux/catalyst_102_linux.pdf
  * GNOME and KDE SC 4.
  * Compositing desktop is enabled (Compiz and KWIN).

  [Symptoms]
  * Window Management: Unminimizing, Maximising, Full-Screening, Resizing
windows and Switching windows (Alt+Tab) will noticably freeze the screen for
about 1 second plus. Your mileage might vary.
  * Memory (RAM) Management: Secondary problem you might notice is memory leak
and/or memory-clearing problem
(http://www.phoronix.com/forums/showthread.php?t=21471).
-
- [Workarounds]
- * Window Management:
-  - Using PPA (Lucid Only) by Bryce Harrington (not up-to-date as of time of
writing)
-    PPA address @ https://edge.launchpad.net/~bryceharrington/+archive/violet
-    In terminal, 'sudo add-apt-repository ppa:bryceharrington/violet' then
install the update and reboot.
-
-    Other PPAs:
-   + Alf Gaida (Lucid):
https://launchpad.net/~info-g-com/+archive/xserver-xorg-1.7.6-gc
-    'sudo add-apt-repository ppa:info-g-com/xserver-xorg-1.7.6-gc'
-
-  - Compile your own packages - when the ppa is not updated fast enough (or
you are an update-freak like me)
-    + You need to tick 'Source Code' option in Synaptic Repositories or add
relevant source code repo (deb-src) if you are using
ppa:ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates.
-    + Building instruction:
-    sudo apt-get build-dep xorg-server
-    sudo apt-get install devscripts
-    apt-get source xorg-server
-    cd xorg-server-*
-    wget http://launchpadlibrarian.net/45103003/xserver-xorg-backclear.patch
-    patch -p1 < xserver-xorg-backclear.patch
-    dch -l local 'Backclear Patch'
-    debuild -us -uc
-    cd ..
-    sudo dpkg --install xserver-xorg-core*.deb
-    sudo dpkg --install xserver-common*.deb
-
- * Memory (RAM) Management:
-  - In terminal, run 'glxinfo' command or invoke 'glxgears' to release the
'uncleared' memory. You might need 'mesa-utils' package installed.
-  - Create a bash script to run at start up
-    #!/bin/sh
-    while [ 1 ]
-    do
-  glxinfo
-  sleep 60
-    done
-
- [My Suggested Comment Guidelines - subjected to change]
- * Keep it civil.
- * Subscribe to the bug and click on the (!) icon on top 'This bug affects you
and x other people' instead of comment like 'it affects me too'.
- * Help test the patch for potential regression as requested by Bryce
Harrington:
-  "A. What we need is solid proof of the following:
-
- 1. No visible regression on -intel with compiz turned on
- 2. No visible regression on -ati with compiz turned on
- 3. No visible regression on -nouveau with compiz turned on
- 4. No visible regression on -nvidia with compiz turned on
- 5. No visible regression on at least one video driver with kde kwin
desktop effects turned on.
-
-   Alternatively, I could accept either of the following:
-
-   B. Rejigger the patch so its logic is only enabled when the fglrx
- driver is loaded
-
-   C. Forward the patch upstream to Debian or bugs.freedesktop.org and get it
accepted into the upstream xserver, from which we can pull a cherrypick patch.
- "

I installed the new driver, though the bug is gone.
However, I cannot find the fglrx ! even anything related.
This makes me believe that something is wrong here.
Cairo-dock works wrong on my desktop and hardware decoding cannot be worked
out.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 554835] Re: [855GM] GPU hang when an application tries to use XVideo

2010-08-24 Thread MarcH
Just tried kernel 2.6.32-24-generic and everything is still crashing the
exact same. So I'll keep running some 2.6.34 PPA kernel as a workaround.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 604383] Re: [RV350 NP] libgl.so.1 page fault on read running Wine Perseus

2010-08-24 Thread Robert Hooker
You have fglrx installed which does not support your 9700 mobile. Only
radeon HD2000 series and newer are supported by it not the old non HD
models. Just remove that (with sudo apt-get purge fglrx for example) and
you'll be set.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 623042] Re: X fall in low graphics mode randomly

2010-08-24 Thread Robert Hooker
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: xorg

While I work on the computer (any application), the graphic shut down
and a window give me the choice to continue in low graphics mode or
  restart or may other options.

I didn't find exactly what append, but it offen appears when working with
firefox. ( Maybe because it's the most used on the pc)
It may take 5 minutes or hours to append, it's why I say randomly.

For your information, I was suspecting a hardware problem, but windoze
is working well on the pc... XP and 7

  Any ideas ?
  Suggestions ?

  Thanks in advance.

** Description changed:

While I work on the computer (any application), the graphic shut down
and a window give me the choice to continue in low graphics mode or
  restart or may other options.

I didn't find exactly what append, but it offen appears when working with
firefox. ( Maybe because it's the most used on the pc)
It may take 5 minutes or hours to append, it's why I say randomly.

For your information, I was suspecting a hardware problem, but windoze
is working well on the pc... XP and 7

  Any ideas ?
  Suggestions ?

  Thanks in advance.
  Sylvain

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 616997] Re: [RV515] Unity keeps reloading with a white background

2010-08-24 Thread Mikkel Kamstrup Erlandsen
Vish: Cool you followed through on this - thanks! Your test output
indicates that all the tests are happy. Which is good of course, but
deepens the mystery...

Markus: Thanks for the xsession-error log!

Looking in both of your xession-error logs I see a:

  (mutter:1347): libunity-private-CRITICAL **: file places/places-place-
entry.c: line 785: uncaught error: Message did not receive a reply
(timeout by message bus) (dbus-glib-error-quark, 4)

In Markus' file this is line 151 - right after the place is triggered.
The same line appears in Vish's error log. This is a bit suspicious...
If we let the question of why this timeout rest for now (as that's a
problem in another process), I am thinking that it may have some side
effects triggering some bug in dbus-lib or libunity-private, that again
cause libdee to receive corrupted data in import_model(). This is pure
speculation of course.

In the code you are running now Unity dispatches a synchronous dbus call
to activate the place - this call times out for some reason (which means
that the place is to slow to respond, which is another bug in itself).
Since sync dbus calls are the root of all evil we are on a quest to
replace all of them with async ones. In the updates slated for this
Thursday (packages prolly available Friday) most of the sync calls
should be removed - which *may* mean that this bug resolves itself...

So if you are really impatient you can compile Unity trunk yourselves
(warning: this is not easy), or you can hold on and see if the Friday
updates magically fixes this. If not, we'll get back onto it!

2010-08-24 Thread Onkar Shinde
Here is my brief testing report with Maverick alpha 3 live CD.

Maverick Alpha 3 Live CD, Radeon 7000- 32M VRAM, 512M RAM.

With KMS
1. General performance improved than Lucid.
2. Video playback using totem
ximagesink - poor framerate, same as lucid
xvimagesink - good quality and framerate, same as Lucid.
3. Games
Osmos game (hemispheregames.com) - Playable, better than Lucid considering that
it is live environment.

Without KMS
1. General performance good, same as Lucid.
2. Video playback using totem
ximagesink - poor framerate, same as lucid
xvimagesink - good quality and framerate, same as Lucid.
3. Games
Osmos game (hemispheregames.com) - No video corruption (better than lucid) but

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 623544] Re: package fglrx-kernel-source 2:8.593-0ubuntu1 failed to install/upgrade: fglrx kernel module failed to build

2010-08-24 Thread Felix Kuehling
The 8.593 driver you're using is the last one that works on R5xx-based
cards, such as your X1600. However, that driver doesn't support any
Ubuntu version newer than Ubuntu 8.10.

On Ubuntu 10.04 your only choice for a graphics driver is the open-
source Radeon driver that ships with Ubuntu. That driver should give you
desktop effects. It may not work very will with games though.

I recommend you uninstall fglrx. Having fglrx installed breaks the
Radeon driver.

Hope this helps ...

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 607817] Re: Xorg Segfault on boot of latest kernel ( ATI drivers )

2010-08-24 Thread Robert Hooker
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-ati

Came to work today to be greeted by the classic gray screen with the "X"
  cursor.

I did a hard reboot, as none of the typical key combos were working.

On reboot, I was given the message "plymouth main process (###) killed
  by SEGV signal 1

This booted me into a root terminal.

Exploring the logs I found a number of messages in multiple logs
related to an Xorg segfault ( kern.log, messages, Xorg.failsafe.log,
  syslog)

After reading a related bug item, I tried removing quiet splash from
the boot config, but this did not work either. It looked like
everything booted fine, but I only saw a black screen. The mouse was
not present and the system did not seem to respond to key presses.
Also was not given a login screen.

My next step was to boot to a previous kernel, which worked.

effects, no glxgears, nothing. I'm very tired, because I want to change
the OS to Ubuntu.

On win7 the card work very fine and I can't buy a newer one.

It will be very very very fantastic, if I could install a fine driver
and use all the functions of Ubuntu effects and will be able to play
some games.

I hope, you all can help me. I've read in a lot of sites about people
with the same trouble.

I also want to take the driver by ati support, but I don't know how to
use the *.run file. I'm very unlucky about.

I'm looking hopeful forward to hear you soon.

Dirk Krüger

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 570151] Re: mouse stuck between screens with xinerama

2010-08-24 Thread Alex Cuervo
@Daniel, on the video it was between screen two and three, but it also
happens to me between the first and the second.

I can also move the mouse vertically, but everything else is dead not
even Ctrl-Alt-Backspace works.

Hopefully this bug can gather enough people for some expert to look into
it.

I have been with linux since 6.10, and extremely happy with it. Then, I did not
have multiple monitors, I added my second monitor at around 8.04 and everything
worked beautifully with twinview.
Since 9.04 I added my third monitor and had to switch from twinview to
Xinerama, everything worked perfect until 9.10.
Now in 10.04 this bug has hampered my productivity a lot. Going back to fewer
monitors is not an option, once you go double or triple, is impossible to go
back.
I wish multiple monitor support (3+) gets a lot of attention soon. I cant
believe, linux, being the workstation grade OS it is, has such a wimpy
multi-monitor support. We can't possibly be the only ones needing 3+ monitors
support.

This can be reproduced on intel (and other cards that support
GL_ARB_non_power_of_two) by launching unity with

MESA_EXTENSION_OVERRIDE=-GL_ARB_texture_non_power_of_two unity

Tormod, are you sure you aren't using r300g (that has limited NPOT

This overscan issue has to be considered as a manufacturing defect by
LG. The LG display/TV was recently tested with my dealer by connecting a
HDMi output of a DVD player: the same overscan occured.

By the way, I have now used Lucid Lynx and an Nvidia card (driver
version 173 from Jockey) and the resolution 1280x720 seems to be
correct.

2010-08-24 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

OS: Kubuntu 9.10 & 9.04

Dock Type: ThinkPad Mini Dock Plus Series 3

Docking and undocking does not force a refresh of detected displays. If
I go to "System Settings" and then "Display" the detected displays are
refreshed and it fixes the resolution and enables/disables the external
display. If KRandRTray is running, clicking on the icon will typically
force a refresh the same as going to "Display" in "System Settings".

Regarding the Lucid i8xx Freezes wiki page, I did try using a different

Though now I have downgraded my System to Ubuntu 8.04 LTS. But could you

Are new nvidia drivers expected before October? Or should a workaround

failing in this fashion.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 623399] Re: nvidia drivers fail to start in Maverick X11

2010-08-24 Thread Harry
Hi Jeff Craig,

NVidia proprietary drivers (nvidia-current) do not accept the new ABI, which is
required by the xserver 1.9 branch.
In order to avoid this you need to add the following lines to your xorg.conf.

Section "ServerFlags"
Option "ignoreABI" "True"
EndSection

Nvidia-current_265.44 do work OK with xserver 1.9 after that.
You may, however, find that scrolling is not so fluent as it was with the
xserver 1.8 branch.
We just have to wait for the new nvidia drivers to overcome that.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 623399] [NEW] nvidia drivers fail to start in Maverick X11

2010-08-24 Thread Jeff Craig

error message is in the old Xorg log attached to this bug. The nvidia

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 605414] Re: Nouveau in Ubuntu does not work on NVIDIA GeForce 8200M

2010-08-24 Thread Dante
Right;

I did indeed have an external monitor; a TV (Sharp), but unplugging it
has not changed the problems encountered with 10.04.

I've tried alpha 3 and daily live of 10.10, but there seems to be an
error (Unknown keyword in configuration file) which appears to be a
known problem; apparently it did not exist with alpha 2 nor 1, so I
guess I'll have to wait and see what happens here before I can confirm
this bug has been squished

Any hope of a bug fix on older kernels? This kernel seems to work just
great on my machine.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 585651] Re: [LUCID] Cannot install on eDP laptops such as HP Elitebook 2540p or 8440p

2010-08-24 Thread madbiologist
Yes, kernel 2.6.35.3 is a stable release. Non-stable kernel releases
are designated with an -rc suffix, for example the latest kernel at the
time of writing this is 2.6.36-rc2. The upcoming Ubuntu 10.10 "Maverick
Meerkat" has released several alpha releases using the 2.6.35 kernel. I
have been using Maverick alpha 3 (plus official updates to firefox,
libcairo2 and mesa) for several weeks now without an issue, although
admittedly my hardware is rather old. My system's uname is Linux
2.6.35-14-generic i686. 2.6.35.3 is the third maintenance release of
the 2.6.35 kernel and should be fine for use on a production machine.
Maverick will be shipping with this kernel, or possibly 2.6.35.4 (the
Maverick KernelFreeze is scheduled for September 16th, 2010, as per
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MaverickReleaseSchedule )
