[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 625239] Re: X starts on wrong tty because gdm starts before nvidia driver is ready
has anyone reproduced this nvidia+gdm crash on maverick? Marking incomplete for maverick pending confirmation. ** Description changed: + This bug has been repurposed based on the comments beginning at #15. + The original submitter's bug was a duplicate of bug #626723. - After the system boots and the plymouth screen disappears and X starts up on tty1 or tty2, if I press the enter key in a few minutes X shuts down and starts again. In the session of X that comes up after this, the problem doesn't occur. - - The problem happens when gdm starts X and X crashes silently. gdm - restarts X but X starts on tty1(2) as getty hasn't yet started and it - isn't the first X start. When getty does start on tty1 it eventually - interferes with X by setting ISIG on the tty. - - In the cases discussed here, the computer systems are very fast and gdm - is starting X before the nvidia kernel module is ready to run. - - NOTE WELL--the original reporter had the problem that his system was starting on tty7 and others were discussing tty1 starts here as well. At comment 30 - the problem was split with regard to tty1/tty7 starts and tty7 discussion moved to #626723. See original description below for his original report. + When booting certain systems with fast disks, gdm will start up and + attempt to launch X before the nvidia kernel driver has fully + initialized. This results in gdm restarting X again, without the 'vt7' + argument, which may cause X's first-available-VT autoselection to pick a + VT between 1 and 6 because the getty jobs have not all yet started. + Ultimately this leads to X crashing when pressing certain keys (such as + Enter or '2') because the tty has been set into a mode by getty that X + is not prepared to handle. ** Package changed: plymouth (Ubuntu Maverick) = gdm (Ubuntu Maverick) ** Package changed: xserver-xorg-video-ati (Ubuntu Maverick) = nvidia- graphics-drivers (Ubuntu Maverick) ** Changed in: nvidia-graphics-drivers (Ubuntu Maverick) Status: Invalid = Confirmed ** Also affects: gdm (Ubuntu Lucid) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Also affects: nvidia-graphics-drivers (Ubuntu Lucid) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Description changed: This bug has been repurposed based on the comments beginning at #15. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 637808] [NEW] only using properitary ati driver can plasma (panasonic plasma) via hdmi be used
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xorg When using the default ati driver in kubuntu 10.04, my screen on the tv (panasonic vierra) via hdmi is oversized. Krandr is detecting the screen resolutions as 1920x1080, 1280x720, and a 720x ... UI thinks it a PAL setting. Anyway any of those settings are too big, like enable larger desktop area or whatever its called is enabled. None of them are really useable. I believe this is true in kde4.4 and sure in 4.5 (cant remember if I tried it for sure in 4.4) so I installed ubuntu desktop to see if it the case in gnome too. It seems to be a problem there as well. I checked for a firmware update for the tv as well. Scenario, vga = main monitor hdmi = out to plasma ati radeon 4200 HD onboard The proprietary driver detects it well. It seems that this bug is fixed in Maveric, at least for 173 drivers (173.14.27). I tested 173 and user switching works fine now. According to the changelog the fix is also applied to 96. There is no problem with installing 173.14.27 on Lucid: 1. download the packages by hand: http://mirrors.kernel.org/ubuntu/pool/restricted/n/nvidia-graphics-drivers-173/nvidia-173-kernel-source_173.14.27-0ubuntu1_i386.deb http://mirrors.kernel.org/ubuntu/pool/restricted/n/nvidia-graphics-drivers-173/nvidia-173_173.14.27-0ubuntu1_i386.deb http://mirrors.kernel.org/ubuntu/pool/main/n/nvidia-graphics-drivers-173/nvidia-173-modaliases_173.14.27-0ubuntu1_i386.deb to /tmp 2. cd /tmp 3. dpkg -i nvidia*deb and voila. Gabriel, this bug is relevant to your question: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg-server/+bug/338489 (and upstream bug http://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=21652 and mailing list discussion http://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=21652) In short: there was an option to deactivate keyboards/mouse grabs (therefore, allowing to Alt+Tab to other applications) or to kill the application with grabs by pressing special hotkeys. However, this option was removed in 2008 and, at least to my knowledge, there are no signs of its return in any form. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 637874] [NEW] Ubuntu Patches in evdev cause regressions on touchscreen
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-input-evdev Using Maverick beta with all recent updates, my touchscreen (eGalax/DWAV screen found in Eee PC T101MT) doesn't work as well as in Lucid. Expected: All touches should be registered and turned into mouse movement/clicks and varying pressure on the screen should result in different opacity in GIMP and Mypaint and different line width in Xournal. What happens: Every third/fourth touch on the screen is simply ignored - neither is the mouse pointer moved nor a click registered. Pressure sensitivity doesn't work (tested in GIMP, Xournal, Mypaint): everything is drawn with the lowest pressure level, thus no lines can be drawn in GIMP. xinput shows that the pressure axis always reports a value of 1. evtest shows that the kernel sends the correct information: pressure information and all touches are reported. Manually compiling evdev (using the sources obtained by apt-get source, thus the same version Maverick uses) without the Ubuntu patches fixes both problems. You have been subscribed to a public bug: Binary package hint: kdm When using kde 4.5 through backport repo on kubuntu 10.04 clicking logout scrambles the screen, making login near impossible. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 541492] Re: MASTER: [i845] GPU lockup (apport-crash) (Should KMS be blacklisted?)
As a workaround for us 845 folks, is it feasible to roll back the graphics architecture that relies on mesa, dri, etc and use the old i810 driver? I liked the proposal made by Anthony. Seems like all we are trying to do in this request is somehow suppress the calls/features which are resulting in this GPU hung situation. But what we are missing here is doing the suppression is impacting the user experience (as mentioned in Comment #230 - Jean is finding the youtube videos jerky after installing the patch) Shall we start thinking in rolling back to the i810 driver? Can someone explain me why we are not doing that? Status in X.Org X server: New Status in “xorg” package in Ubuntu: Invalid Status in “xorg-server” package in Ubuntu: Triaged Bug description: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=258304 Hybrids with the Ability to turn off the 3d chip: AMD/ATI calls it PowerXpress and Nvidia HybridPower. It uses 2 graphics cards, one energy efficient with little 3d power and the other for gaming (fast and uses more/a lot of power), the user can choose which chip to use. This is not a new concept. Sony has build in 2 graphics chips into some of their laptops for years. In the past a reboot was required to switch between the chips. With the new generation it is possible to change between chips on the fly, the screen will flicker but no need to reboot. At least in Windows Vista (XP, Linux not supported) the user can switch freely between the chips or set up a profile to do so automatically (eg when on battery use low power chip and when plugged in use the more powerful chip). The graphic card hybrid not only works with two Nvidia or AMD cards but the low power Intel graphics solutions (mostly shard memory) can also be combined with 3d chips from AMD or Nvidia. This solution is ideal for users who want maximum battery life and be able to play current games. The most likely combination is Intel shard memory graphics card for battery life and some low to mid level 3d chip. This will not give great 3d performance but enable you to play some games. Limitations are the drivers. Special drivers are needed depending on which graphic chips are combined in the hybrid. This will most likely make you depended on the Notebook manufactures driver support. It is uncertain if 3rd party drivers (such as laptopvideo2go) will be usable. The following notebooks have Nvidia hybrid graphics (as seen on the link below): http://www.nvidia.com/object/io_1221136906708.html - Sony VAIO Z (Nvidia GeForce 9300M GS Intel GMA 4500MHD) - Fujitsu Siemens Amilo XI 3650 (Nvidia GeForce 9600M GT Intel GMA 4500MHD) - BenQ Joybook S42 (Nvidia GeForce 9600M GT Intel GMA 4500MHD) On the NVidia side, we reported this issue in the nvnews forum: http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=1916754 On the AMD/ATI side, we got words from Alex Deucher that he will liaise with AMD for docs in time: We can definitely look into it, the problem is we already have a backlog of stuff with higher priority (finishing 3D, newer power management bits, investigating IDCT/UVD, etc.) to work through at the moment, so I cannot say when we'd get to hybrid graphics. The other problem is that since many of these hybrid solutions are multi-vendor, we may not have the rights release certain IP. Even if would could release some information, as has been stated previously, the driver stack needs significant work to support something like this. On the Sony Vaio Z series, right now both cards are visible under Linux, but there is no way to hot-switching-off (if that is a word...) the Nvidia card. There are currently ~45 users of Sony Vaio Z series using Linux that would like this feature to be implemented. See: https://launchpad.net/~sony-vaio-z-serieshttps://launchpad.net/%7Esony-vaio-z-series Also, see: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=325616page=1 http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=325616page=2 http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=325616page=3

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 637874] Re: Ubuntu Patches in evdev cause regressions on touchscreen
Sorry, the Xorg.0.log uploaded earlier is wrong, it was recorded when I had used the self-compiled evdev version, not the Ubuntu one, thus when the bug did not occur. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 637083] Re: Cairo-dock very slow when using open gl
Hi, The hidding methods have been rewritten. It works much better than before with most graphic cards and this is the first bug report about that I think. So I think it's maybe a problem with your drivers (xorg/mesa)... @ Mesa devs: Someone can confirm? @ Fabounet: is it possible to add an option in order to use the libcairo only for the hidding method? ** Also affects: mesa (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Cairo-dock very slow when using open gl https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/637083 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to mesa in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 625239] Re: X starts on wrong tty because gdm starts before nvidia driver is ready
Steve, Please show the contents of a plymouth:debug log, and /proc/fb, when booting with vga=799 (and without grub_gfxmode set). Attaching /var/log/udev, /var/log/plymouth-debug.log and /proc/fb after boot with no GRUB_GFXMODE set and: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=vga=799 plymouth:debug GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX= Keep in mind that the above generally behaves as a workaround for me. I did boot with X on VT7 this time. Jamie, is the udev log file attached to comment 89 from a boot with or without the vga=799 workaround, and with or without an X crash on startup? I believe the log attached to 89 was without the vga=799, but I can't be absolutely certain, sorry. Instead, I probably had the plymouth:debug in there, which also turned out to be a workaround. When I had vga=799 in there, I don't believe I ever had a crash. ** Attachment added: vga-799-plymouth-debug-no-grub_gfxmode.tar.gz https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nvidia-graphics-drivers/+bug/625239/+attachment/1583158/+files/vga-799-plymouth-debug-no-grub_gfxmode.tar.gz -- X starts on wrong tty because gdm starts before nvidia driver is ready https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/625239 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to nvidia-graphics-drivers in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
