[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 625239] Re: X starts on wrong tty because gdm starts before nvidia driver is ready

2010-09-15 Thread Martin Pitt
This sounds a lot like bug 615549 which was fixed yesterday. Is this
still an issue with gdm 2.30.5-0ubuntu4?

Yep, sounds like exactly the same bug.

So far the only test on maverick from someone who's confirmed to see this
bug on lucid has failed to reproduce the problem there, even /without/ the
new gdm package. Nevertheless, I think there's enough information here to
mark this as a duplicate of 615549 and target that bug for SRU.

That sounds like a different sort of crash, then. Please show the gdm/X
logs from the crash in question - as well as for any previous X server start
attempts as part of this boot cycle.

okay, I got a temporary fix. If I press a mediakey on my USB-keyboard,
my mouse's left button (neither trackpad nor USB mouse) doesn't work
anymore. If I pull the keyboard out and plug them in again, I can use my
mouse's left button again.

Good call. I've reviewed all leftover Xorg logs and there were no (EE)
messages, particularly note related to nvidia. I have no reason to
believe that logs have gone missing, so I need to be more sure to make
that call. I will keep running with the modded upstart condition (which
incidentally matches the one from maverick, I believe?):

start on (filesystem
  and started dbus
  and (drm-device-added card0 PRIMARY_DEVICE_FOR_DISPLAY=1
   or stopped udevtrigger))
stop on runlevel [016]

Let you know how I fare

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 46463] Re: Western keyboard layouts don't work after thai language login

2010-09-15 Thread Tero Kuusela
I tested with a fresh install of 10.04.1 + updates. This is still an
issue.

In Lucid at least, there were no scim-packages installed when adding
support for thai. Is the comment about scim-bridge still relevant? I
never did get around to trying that workaround.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 638813] [NEW] Jerky OpenGL on intel 945GSE, better when touching the trackpad

2010-09-15 Thread bkrzem

I rest my finger on the touchpad (!) it seems to help. For example, the
glxgears animation is very jerky and I get about 130 - 170 frames/sec,

playing Extreme Tux Racer - the graphics is jerky but seems to be much

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 638871] [NEW] KDE4 not started after login - X crashed

2010-09-15 Thread Alrond
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

System affected:

Kubuntu 10.10 latest beta 2.6.35-20-generic i686
Kubuntu 10.10 latest beta 2.6.35-21-generic i686

After latest update (14th Sep.) for Kubuntu 10.10 I have restarted my PC
- got login window, entered password and then after ca. 5secs X were
restarted (kdm)

I cannot use KDE, only console - always this crash.
I don't known which package of X.Org makes this. I make update/upgrade every
day. But latest restart was on 8th Sep.

In logs I have found following:

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 631413] Re: [FFe] Mesa 7.9

2010-09-15 Thread madbiologist
Woohoo!

Is it still planned to include Mesa 7.9 final in Maverick as per the "General
X.org plans for M" blueprint at
https://blueprints.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+spec/desktop-maverick-xorg-in-mm ?
Mesa 7.9 final is scheduled for release by the end of September - see
http://lists.freedesktop.org/archives/mesa-dev/2010-August/002648.html
The Mesa 7.9 release tracker bug is at
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=30124

If Mesa 7.9 final is not included in Maverick, we will probably want
commit e7eff0cfcef5c549678779e3c1def950feae4fb9 by Jesse Barnes. As
explained in the earlier commit c121608b6e409fe6c22cb8b05c52cc94d2dfb0af
(also by Jesse Barnes), this adds a PCI ID to allow the KMS EGL driver
to load on an Intel Pineview.

We might also want to consider commit
9532eea509321d8f88a4e60191a1e659ada40dfe by Alex Deucher. This is
titled "r600c: const buffer sizes must be a multiple of 16 consts" and
has the comment "This applies to r6xx/r7xx/evergreen".

There are a couple of others to consider too. The first is commit
428dc6d7d2cf6a5da37a2ea7ce436cf521b009a2 by Marek Olšák. This is titled
"r300g/swtcl: unlock VBO after draw_flush" and has the comment
"https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=29901
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=30132 ". This fixes a
crash in Neverball with the r300g driver and also fixes a crash in
Nexuiz, and possibly fixes crashes in OpenSceneGraph, Blender 2.5.3, and
Make Human. The second is commit
6b5575baaa16563f1ea1ad1821254ce6c412283f by José Fonseca. This is
titled "llvmpipe: Fix non SSE2 builds" and has the comment "Should fix
fdo 30168."

One last one to consider is commit
5d4409e0e57c280a7b3a0655543e089bcf8da0ed by Marek Olšák. This is titled
"r300g: prevent creating multiple winsys BOs for the same handle" and
has the comment "This fixes a DRM deadlock in the cubestorm
xscreensaver, because somehow there must not be 2 different BOs
relocated in one CS if both BOs back the same handle. I was told it is
impossible to happen, but apparently it is not, or there is something
else wrong. (cherry picked from commit
0b9eb5c9bb03e5134d9a41786178100109e80c5a)". Note that if we add this
commit we will also need to add the next commit, namely commit
fd4c6bd1357fd9931f6c6bdbcfb01ebc2ba01f1b by Dave Airlie. This is titled
"r300g: fix buffer reuse issue caused by previous commit" and has the
comment "caused by 0b9eb5c9bb03e5134d9a41786178100109e80c5a. test - run
glxgears, resize. (cherry picked from commit
09ef8e9283f17e5dc9fa4a86c659048acda833cb)"

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 511747] Re: support for Acer 1420P

2010-09-15 Thread drem
I made some patches for Maverick in order to make the PB Butterfly Touch / Acer
1420 mosart touchscreen work.
This kind of problem appears in many touchscreens, and can be solved in hid.
The following 2 simple patches do this:
- /drivers/hid/hid-ids.h -> registers an ID for our particular device
- /drivers/hid/usbhid/hid-quirks.c -> applies the MULTI INPUT quirk for our
device
Hopefully this will get upstream (they only add this device in lists along
other touchscreens) so that our touchscreens work out of the box :D
(Tested with the 2.6.35.4 kernel - Maverick beta x64 + updates)

(For those who are just looking for a quick sollution in Lucid, I did a evdev
workaround (similar to #1 ) and the file can be found here:
http://romanescu.net/content/mosart-touchscreen-linux
(=just replace your evdev_drv.so driver with the one I compiled there and it
should work ;) )

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 599741] Re: Major rendering issues using ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3450

2010-09-15 Thread Duncan McGreggor
Ikbel,

This is a common issue right now; lots of people reporting it (see bug #638725,
bug #608361, bug #616997). From bug #608361, Vish makes this recommendation,
from the command line execute:
  $ ubuntu-bug xserver-xorg-video-

where would correspond to the graphics card your system has.

Once you've done that, you need to "also affects" Unity. Then come back
to this bug and add a comment with the new bug number.

See his original comment here:
  https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unity/+bug/608361/comments/8

Thanks!

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 633380] Re: Xorg freeze on intel GM45 during high load (io and cpu)

2010-09-15 Thread Maciej Janowski
Again - computer froze while copying large file via Gigabit ethernet
(most of the memory was used by buffers).

Meaby the key to all this is no swap on my machine? Will try to do more
test with swap enabled.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 593272] Re: python2.6 crashed with SIGSEGV in XF86DRIQueryExtension()

2010-09-15 Thread Felix Kuehling
This usually happens when the wrong libGL is in use. Either fglrx is
installed but a stale libGL is in /usr/lib, or fglrx is installed but
not actually in use (not configured in xorg.conf).

To know what's going on I'd like to see Xorg.0.log and xorg.conf from an
affected system as well as the output of

ls -l /usr/lib/ligGL*
ls -l /usr/lib/fglrx

Count me in. I just went the 'IKEA way' and added a reboot loop section
to my rc.local that logs all conceivable related info per boot[1]. The
used script has been attached. Per boot, a number of logfiles is
collected, various ps listings, package versions, upstart config is
saved in a tarball.

This resulted in 79 tarballs, which I intend to attach later in sofar
Martin/Steve have been asking for the info contained.

I tested 79 boots (_real_ boots) in all, in three batches:

--
(A) with plain vanilla lucid config and package: 40 boots. 30 of these
boots landed on tty2 rather than tty7:

r...@lucid:~/first# for a in gdmdebug_1*; do tar xOf $a tmp/ | grep
usr/bin/X | head -1; done | cut -c31-34 | sort | uniq -c
 15 tty2
 25 tty7

All tty2 occurences coincide with multiple (1 _or_ 2) messages in the
logs about re-attempting to launch X:

r...@lucid:~/first# for a in gdmdebug_1*; do tar xOf $a
var/log/daemon.log | grep 'display lasted' | wc -l; done | sort |
uniq -c
 25 0
  6 1
  9 2

Interestingly, of the failing cases (75% of total boots), two-thirds
required 3 attempts, against one-third requiring two attempts to launch
X. Ah, well.

--
(B) with plain vanilla packages but maverick-style startup condition
(from bug 615549). 23 out of 23 land on tty7 just fine

r...@lucid:~/martinfix# for a in gdmdebug_1*; do tar xOf $a tmp/ |
grep usr/bin/X | head -1; done | cut -c31-34 | sort | uniq -c
 23 tty7

--
 (C) in an effort to really torture test this when really reducing the
boot time to the absolute minimum ), i switched of as many services as I
could. Resulting boot time (1 sample) was around 7.20s. Obviously the
maverick fresh install was even faster than that.

Happily, 16 out of 16 boots landed X on tty7

r...@lucid:~/martin_minimal# for a in gdmdebug_1*; do tar xOf $a
tmp/ | grep usr/bin/X | head -1; done | cut -c31-34 | sort | uniq -c
 16 tty7

All three batches were running the standard lucid package of gdm (manual
modifications done to gdm.conf in B and C):

r...@lucid:~# for a in */gdmdebug_*; do tar xOf $a | grep ^Version;
done | uniq -c
 79 Version: 2.30.2.is.2.30.0-0ubuntu3

Hence, I would consider the fix in #615549 valid for this bug. Note that
it needs to be back-ported to lucid!
Finally, I think I will report the premature creation of
/var/run/gdm/firstserver.stamp as well as broken handling of gdm start
failure as bugs with gdm.

Thanks for all the thinking along, and especially Martin(?) for coming
up with the root cause.

[1] quote:

#!/bin/bash
#Not: set -e

chvt 1; echo "INFO: auto logging debug info"
bash /etc/gdm_debug.sh

sleep 4
rm -fv /var/log/Xorg.* /var/log/gdm/* /var/run/gdm/firstserver.stamp
rm/var/log/{syslog,user.log,kern.log,daemon.log}
touch /var/log/{syslog,user.log,kern.log,daemon.log}

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 625239] Re: X starts on wrong tty because gdm starts before nvidia driver is ready

2010-09-15 Thread Jamie Krug
Steve Langasek wrote in #150:

Yes, the attached archive contains two sets of logs, both without
vga=799 or any other workaround in place. One has "quiet splash"
appended to the boot line, which landed X on tty2 (as expected, and
would likely crash eventually). The other has "plymouth:debug" appended
to the boot line, which landed X on tty7 (and is generally more stable,
rarely crashing--another near workaround). I've included udev, /proc/fb
and any relevant X/gdm logs. HTH!

Yes, with vga=799 I see a text-only splash.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 496767] Re: [i865] Monitor initially recognized in Ubuntu 9.10, but then reverts to "Unknown Monitor" with 800x600 resolution.

2010-09-15 Thread whochismo
The bug still exists in Lucid 10.04, using a 00:02.0 VGA compatible
controller: Intel Corporation 82945G/GZ Integrated Graphics Controller
(rev 02) graphics adapter and a ViewSonic E70f.

It existed in Karmic, but after upgrading the computer, it still exists.
Starting the monitor after ubuntu has loaded seems to work.
