[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 541492] Re: MASTER: [i845] GPU lockup (apport-crash) (Should KMS be blacklisted?)

2010-10-02 Thread oblong
System/hardware:
10.04 (lucid) 2.6.32-25-generic

1024x768

$ lspci|grep VGA
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82845G/GL[Brookdale-G]/GE
Chipset Integrated Graphics Device (rev 03)

This reproduces the problem consistently (gnome-screensaver is
installed):

System|Preferences|Screensaver.

By default, AntSpotlight is selected. After a couple of seconds the
screen goes blank, sometimes with vertical zebra stripes.

syslog contains:

Oct 2 12:26:41 ubuntu-desktop kernel: [ 5531.425838]
[drm:i915_gem_entervt_ioctl] *ERROR* Reenabling wedged hardware, good luck
Oct 2 12:26:41 ubuntu-desktop kernel: [ 5531.740027]
[drm:i915_hangcheck_elapsed] *ERROR* Hangcheck timer elapsed... GPU hung
Oct 2 12:26:41 ubuntu-desktop kernel: [ 5531.740038] render error detected,
EIR: 0x
Oct 2 12:26:41 ubuntu-desktop kernel: [ 5531.740880]
[drm:i915_do_wait_request] *ERROR* i915_do_wait_request returns -5 (awaiting
4120 at 1135)
Oct 2 12:26:43 ubuntu-desktop kernel: [ 5533.792017] [drm:i915_gem_idle]
*ERROR* hardware wedged

So after a reboot (pressing the power button seems to more-or-less
cleanly shutdown), at GRUB, I've pressed 'e' to edit and after quiet
splash I've added i915.modetest=1 (no quotes).

After that, I can go to the screen saver preferences and there is no
black screen/crash. Screensaver comes in after the specified time and
works, probably slowly, though.

However, I then realised that modetest should have been modeset. So, not
surprisingly,
syslog reports:

kernel: [ 18.768163] i915: Unknown parameter `modetest'

If I use modeset=0, or modeset=1, then the blanking/crash still
happens when I go to the screensaver preferences.

So, modetest=0 or modetest=1 (either one avoids the blanking) is doing
*something*. But what, and why?

Anyway, I'm happy to live with this until the official release of
Maverick, which hopefully will solve things.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 612068] Re: Targus model PAUM30U USB wireless presentation mouse will not work

2010-10-02 Thread Jorge
I have a similar issue with a Targus PAWM004 Wireless Mouse, the thing
is that the mouse seems to work (i can click, use the mouse wheel, use
both clicks) but the mouse pointer on the screen don't move, i execute
this on a terminal:

cat /dev/input/mouse2

and when i move the mouse some text appears on the terminal, which means
that the device is talking but there is no movement on the screen.

Should i fill a new bug report?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 647488] Re: when xorg starts, screen is corrupted

2010-10-02 Thread swmike
I do not have any xorg.conf file created, so it's running default.

With nomodeset I get 660 fps in glxgears, without it I get 60.

I don't really know what part of the solutions in the 6411525 bug you
want me to try, I don't really see any of them being applicable to my
problem.

I just distupgraded again and the problem still remains.

Just tested with 10.10 Release Candidate. Kernel still contains the
bug, black screen on startup, wrong display port display is selected.

Andy, is there any further work on this issue continuing before 10.10

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 645377] Re: [M7 LW] [RV250] resolution incorrectly detected on various radeon cards

2010-10-02 Thread Tormod Volden
This is another example of gnome-settings-daemon trying to be smarter
than the X server, see bug 640807.

Interestingly, the faulty 1600 mode does not show up in the modes list
in the apport-collected bug summary, so it must have been injected
later. Does g-s-d add new modes?

MrMacman2u, please file a bug report on your issue. You can refer to
this and other bug reports in your report, but please make a complete
report with all needed information, by using ubuntu-bug xserver-xorg-
video-ati.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 641525] Re: Screen with 4:3 ratio incorrectly detected as having 16:9 ratio

2010-10-02 Thread Tormod Volden
This is related to bug 640807, which explains why it showed up a few
days ago. Also, the DRM.card0.LVDS.1 modes list in the apport-collected
summary does not list the faulty 1360x768 mode, but it shows up in the
xrandr output. I suspected g-s-d for this in another report, but since
the mode can be seen listed in Xorg.0.log in early initialization this
must be an xorg bug.

g-s-d will be fixed so it does not overrule the X server mode selection,
so the reported problem will go away. However the bug in xorg which
generates the faulty mode should also be fixed to avoid other problems.

From looking at Xorg.0.log it seems like xorg makes up the 1600 mode
itself.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 653093] Re: kde desktop effects disables by default and desktop freezes when enabled

2010-10-02 Thread luca
With same graphic chipset i915 and kubuntu maverick amd64 updated daily
I don't get any freeze since two days, but effects too are not active at
startup and window miniatures are empty. If i switch to Xrender
miniatures are shown, effects are enabled at startup, but I loose most
of them and compositing is much slower. (with Lucid It's ALL ok,
indeed). Hope this can help :) Thanks.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 580225] Re: [gm45] Backlight sometimes stays off after resume on Lenovo X200

2010-10-02 Thread Timo Kluck
I have the same bug on a HP TouchSmart tm2, with the added bonus that
the backlight problems also happen at startup every now and then.

The easiest way I have found to trigger this situation is to set
brightness to 0 on a terminal (as root)

echo 0 /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness

Any other brightness set in this way is applied correctly. However,
after setting 0, the backlight never comes back on.

A workaround I use is to change screen orientation. For some reason, the
command

xrandr -o right

(followed by xrandr -o normal to get it back to normal) changes so many
things in the display settings that the backlight comes back on. I have
now assigned hotkeys to these commands, so that I can log in blindly,
then press the hotkeys, and have a working backlight.

I should also note that this problem does not occur after switching to
ATI graphics with the vga_switcheroo kernel module.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 640058] Re: [xorg-edgers] X server crash with intel driver when using shadow option

uname -a: Linux jmp-desktop 2.6.32-24-generic #43-Ubuntu SMP Thu Sep 16
14:17:33 UTC 2010 i686 GNU/Linux

I set the option Shadow at True in the xorg.conf and shutdown and restarted the
machine.
Then I tested glxinfo: there is no crash anymore!
glxinfo | grep direct rendering: YES

celestia (1.6.0): no crash also but once launched it is slow: after
celestia has launched and displayed the welcome message, top shows that
the process celestia-gnome takes all the cpu available, e.g. 95% of the
cpu, even when I do nothing in celestia. In celestia, If I move the
mouse pointer (a cross) from the main graphics window to the File menu
option, the pointer takes about 1 to 4 seconds to change to the arrow
shape. RIght now, alt-tab from my typing this comment, to celestia takes
about 4 seconds.

celestia Help / OpenGL info says:
Vendor: Mesa Project
Renderer: Software Rasterizer
Version: 2.1 Mesa 7.10-devel
Max simultaneous textures: 8
Max texture size: 4096

It seems the shadow option do not accelerate anything ?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 595838] [NEW] Lucid - 'no signal' message occasionally on boot

2010-10-02 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Using Lucid Lynx, i occasionally get the 'no signal' message on my
monitor during boot. it had only happened a few times in six weeks but
has now happened three times in the last few days. I have Lucid set to
log in automatically, if that is of use to bug testers.

This problem doesn't happen (that I know of) in Windows 7 or PCLOS 2010
on the same machine, using identical internal drives, so it doesn't seem
to be hardware related.

I never have a problem with Lucid once I have booted. No crashes at all.
Its just during the boot process.

When this problem occurs, I can see the BIOS screen no problem, then as
it goes to boot into Lucid the screen says 'no signal' then my green
light on the monitor goes orange. Pressing ctrl-alt-F1 seems to shut
everything down fine then it boots fine the next time.

2010-10-02 Thread Barney Blackshaw
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

After upgrading to 10.10 system would only boot to terminal mode.
Observed message 'failed to load screen'. Clean install of 10.10 allowed
full boot up but no nVidia hardware screen drivers were installed. Even
after using Synaptic to load nVidia v173 the system would not enable the
driver. Reverted back to 10.04 for now, which functions excellently.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 637880] [NEW] ATI Radeon 5770 Very Poorly Supported

2010-10-02 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

I've tried to run an ATI Radeon 5770 based video card on my x64 10.04
box (up to date as of Sept 14). I've even tried using the 10.8 Catalyst
(was released a few weeks back.. ~late Aug 2010). Thus far the very best
performance I can get is what I'd get using the vesa X11 driver (only I
was explicitly using fglrx).

I gave the x64 10.10 beta a whirl, but didn't even get anything coming
up on my display. I'm aware I could probably feed in some command-line
option on boot and set up on ghetto-graphics. I didn't bother with that.

I've also tried running this card in parallel with a Radeon HD 2600.
When doing that, the ATI Catalyist Center reports the 5770 as an
Unknown Device... sarcasm Awesome /sarcasm

I'm concerned in that the 5770 is growing in popularity (for example
it's now common place in a few lines of Apple machines). I've observed
some forums threads with some fairly old discussion on this issue.

Perhaps a 'solution' could entail outright declaring that it's an
unsupported card until further notice. If that's opted for, there should
be a hook or something in grub2 that displays a warning message to
users... As that's a lot more graceful than a completely blank screen.

I can only hope my take on this whole situation is incorrect, but sadly,
I've spent many hours on this. I think the 5770 stands to make 10.10 not
look so great. Hopefully it's an isolated case?

Thanks gang, keep up the awesome work!

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 653533] [NEW] [i915] Regression from Lucid DVI + LVDS screen corrupted

2010-10-02 Thread Chaostya
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

In Lucid I had dual monitor setup with my Dell D610 laptop connected to Dock
station.
I've had DVI(1280x1024)+LVDS(1440x1050) running good - big desktop stretched
along 2 monitors.
After upgrade to Maverick same setup behaves weird. In Preferences-Monitors it
shows that both are On and DVI is left to LVDS but LVDS screen is black and the
strangest thing is that moving cursor beyond right border of DVI shows it on
LVDS but it can't move more the it's length there so it can only visit small
stripe of LVDS and get back to DVI.

Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 644943] Re: xterm fonts get corrupted while typing

2010-10-02 Thread Thomas Dickey
On Sat, 2 Oct 2010, John Clemens wrote:

Oh, and something productive to add instead of just whining: Another
font artefact happens if you use the xterm popup windows (ctrl-right
click, for example). Moving the mouse over the menu entries leaves
 lines under the menu text.

Could the be somehow related to xterm now using true-type fonts?

I asked, and was told it's using the default (bitmap) fonts.

All of the symptoms sound similar - and since none of my changes would
affect the menu text (in Xaw), it's fairly likely they have a common
cause.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 636311] Re: Keyboard special keys interfere with mouse

2010-10-02 Thread Stephen Michael Coons
I'm also affected with MS Wireless Comfort Keyboard 5000.

Mouse and keyboard share a single USB transceiver. Unplugging and
replugging the transceiver will allow the left mouse button to un-
click.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 646860] Re: Touch-pad crazy with Ubuntu 10.04 on laptop Aspire 8530

2010-10-02 Thread Claudio Pighin
This morning my touch-pad seemed to work fine, but now it's giving problems.
However, a couple of hours ago I encountered difficulties with jumping cursor
while writing an e-mail. Such a problem occurs very often (perhaps always) in
Ubuntu environment. Until now I have not reported this strange behaviour since
I was considering it as a minor problem compared to the opening of unwanted
windows and applications, but now I suspect that they are different aspects of
the same bug. So I recorded the attached movie to show what happens when I try
to write an e-mail (or a text in a web page). In the example attached I was
writing the word: impegno and the cursor jumped at a line below when I was
just hinting the key: o. Such a behaviour occurs several times during the
editing of my e-mail and it was very frustrating. As a matter of fact, if I am
not watching out the screen and so I do not realize to be writing in a wrong
place, I cannot correct promptly my text which soon becomes unusable.
For your information, I tried to write the draft of this message with Gedit to
test if the problem occurs as well and I experienced no difficulties on writing.
I asked to myself: Does the bug comes out only when a browser is involved?
So I closed the Browser and suddenly I verified that pointer of the touch-pad
was crazy (jumping around and opening unwanted windows and applications) so I
had the impression that the bug is independent from the use of a internet
connection.

It should be considered that the difficulty on writing e text, together with
the problem of crazy touch-pad has been the main reason to prefer Windows
system to Ubuntu.
I hope that the bug be fixed to prefer Ubuntu soon.

Is it possible to post a new comment on

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 561734] Re: quadrapassel doesn't start: Failed to initialise clutter: Unable to select the newly created GLX context

2010-10-02 Thread Dave Gilbert
If you are still seeing this can you please give the following
information:

The graphics card you have from:

lspci|grep -i vga

Whether you have any proprietary graphics drivers installed; I think the
following should say that:

jockey-text -l

The version of quadrapassel you have:
dpkg -l quadrapassel|cat

and finally what mesa stuff you have installed:
dpkg -l \*mesa\*|grep ^ii

and maybe the output of glxinfo

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 651793] [NEW] native vga=0x120 on cmdline does not work on Intel chips that do not support standard VESA modes

2010-10-02 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

This seems essentially a continuation of or closely related to
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/usplash/+bug/150797

In Lucid when I try vga=0x120 on cmdline I do not get the Intel legacy
native 132 column by 25 row mode. A message flashes on screen and
disappears too quickly to read, and nothing that looks similar is to be
found anywhere in /var/log. Googling I've seen references to gfxpayload,
but these all seem to imply framebuffer ever worked. Framebuffer never
has worked on any i810 video chip I've used. None of the gfxpayload
examples I've tried on Lucid work. So, I'm stuck in 80x30 consoles using
Lucid, while openSUSE 11.3 (later released) on the same machine gives me
the same functional 120X25 consoles I've been using for over a decade.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 653714] [NEW] X display shows garbage w/ nouveau Nvidia GeForce4 Ti 4200 Go AGP rev a1 (NV28)

2010-10-02 Thread John Navitsky
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-nouveau

I have a Dell D800 laptop with high resolution screen (1920x1200) that
was working fine with Ubuntu 10.04. I performed a fresh install of
Ubuntu 10.10 which appears to use the nouveau driver. The screen now
displays garbage, more pronounced on icons, where text seems to render
fairly well.

I've attached a picture of the screen to illustrate.

While I've tried to intall the Nvidia drivers, this problem manifested
from the initial install of the 10.10 alternate RC disc, and remains
present with all packages updated as of 10/1 where no alternate driver
install was attempted.

Please let me know what information I might be able to provide that
would be useful in fixing this problem.

Thank you,

-john

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 635419] Re: [maverick] Xserver segfaults with ATI cards in libglx module initialisation

2010-10-02 Thread Albert Santoni
I have an ATI Radeon HD 4850 and same problem when upgrading from 10.04
to the 10.10 RC.

I've tried installing the latest Catalyst hotfix release but I still have the
same Xorg segfault.
(I can't get on wifi though because I have no idea how to configured
NetworkManager from the command line. nmcli doesn't actually let you
_configure_ your networking.)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 630580] Re: [82G965] No compositing with kwin (and doesn't work well if enabled)

2010-10-02 Thread IndustryShocker
I have an IBM Thinkpad R52 with Intel 915GM/GMS/910 GML Express
Graphics. It just works like a dream of dubai with Kubuntu 10.04.Now
with 10.10 i have the Desktop effects on but it only works with direct
rendering not without anymore. My kwin has strange lines everywhere
arround when i move my windows. I use low graphics for my windows (dont
see windows when resizing, moving etc.). One time i startet Konqueror
and kwin and plasma just crashed...i think the intel driver needs
fixes!!! I love my Kubuntu IBM:) i dont want miss it
