[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 659703] [NEW] System freeze possibly due to memory corruption
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: libgl1-mesa-dri-experimental System is Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick, just upgraded from Lucid, 4GB RAM Lenovo ThinkPad T61, Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU T9300 @ 2.50GHz, nVidia Corporation G84M [Quadro NVS 140M] (rev a1), kernel 2.6.35-22-generic, using Nouveau driver, Both single monitor (laptop) and dual screen (laptop + external DVI or VGA) setups. After installing libgl1-mesa-dri-experimental version 7.9~git20100924-0ubuntu2 for 3D support system locks up in random amount of time (2-30 minutes). There is a visible image corruption on the background. Sometimes already on boot, sometimes only later. Sometimes none, sometimes the lower part, sometimes the whole background. It occours much more often with dual screen, using laptop+DVI. The time it takes to freeze seems to be related to images used: if I load a 3000x3000 jpg (satelite image) in firefox it locks up immediatelly, consistently. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 635258] Re: Garbled chars in xterm
I get the same problem with emacs, so it looks like this affects any application using bitmap fonts. From the look of it, single characters are more affected than large areas (even on normal repaints where nothing has changed, eg switching desktops), so my guess would be that something isn't properly clearing bitmaps at their edges before copying them. Please install 260.19.06-ubuntu1 again, reboot and reproduce the crash. Then save your /var/log/Xorg.0.log, your /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old and dmesg in recovery mode and switch back to the driver that works for you. Finally attach the 2 logs. I can confirm comment #137 by Marcos Vinícius. The problem did not affect me before I updated to Maverik. Also, I noticed that xdotool click 1 (xdotool is a X11 macro processor) does not work either. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 492782] Re: Mouse cursor disappears after restarting screen (xrandr / resume)
There is also a question about this at https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video- intel/+question/108987 Common to all bug reports I read is that: - The symptom is that the mouse pointer is invisible, but the mouse still works: you can hover on stuff and click. - The problem appears after the X mode changes (eg. while returning from blank screen, returning from suspend, changing resolutions, other fiddling with xrandr, sometimes even directly from boot). - In some reports there are step-by-step how to reproduce while in some the cursor disappears randomly. At least is is sure that for average bug reporters it is hard to spot the pattern why/when the mouse pointer disappears. - There are several workarounds that makes the X mode reload and thus brings the mouse back: -- switching back and fourth to a console (Ctrl+Alt+F1, Ctrl+Alt+F7) -- opening Gnome terminal and writing something (some other apps too, but writing in any app won't work) - It seems that this bug is expressed on both Intel, ATI and Nvidia cards. - The desktop environment seems always to be Gnome. Bug #457046 might be related - there the cursor disappears because of a race condition in Gnome which makes the cursor drawn under the window. - Different Ubuntu releases and kernel versions are affected, however in some bug reports upgrading to a new release/kernel made the problem go away. The patch in bug #614176 comment #22 seems interesting. - Bug #595282 hints it might be a problem in how X detects the display or some interaction between xorg-server and kernel that messes the mouse pointer. - According to bug #475917 removing the file ~/.config/monitors.xml prevents expression of the bug. Disclaimer: kernel drivers, Xorg, xrandr, Gnome display management etc is not my expertise, so I don't know where the problem actually is. I however hope this investigation helps somebody and decreases the number of new bugs of the same issue. If it turns out that this is now fixed in newer kernels, please backport the fix to 10.04 LTS to increase it's stability. -- Mouse cursor disappears after restarting screen (xrandr / resume) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/492782 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-intel in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 655592] Re: [R300g][xorg-edgers] System hangs when using direct rendering
Tormod, that's the problem - capacity. I wanted to test everything from pendrive before I'll upgrade from 10.04 and configure stable system at home. I've read at Ubuntu Wiki that Kernel Team won't include any drivers from Ubuntu kernel to mainline kernels as that kernels are built from vanilla source to test and report bugs upstream. For now I've applied drm_kms_helper.pool parameter patch for 2.6.35-22-generic kernel, rebuilt only drm modules, pack custom initrd and add option to syslinux to choose that initrd and drm_kms_helper.pool=0 parameter. It at least boots properly and doesn't bring problems for nouveau driver on my Nvidia Quadro NVS135M based laptop at work. Thanks, Pander, corrected it. Yesterday I tried until midnight to compile and test the 32-bit driver on an external USB disk, no way, I can't do a proper install on a Maverick 32-bit cd (gnome) on a usb disk as I did with the 64-bit. Even the 32-bit usb image created by the standard ubuntu install cd does not boot or the cd itself, in spite I have md5-checked it. I resorted to xubuntu 10:10, which boots and I will retry. Daniel Karlsson wrote: Same (i.e. frequent NVRM... records in syslog, co-occuring with resume from suspend freeze) on Dell E6410 with Nvidia NVS 3100M. Will downgrade/reinstall to Lucid solve the problem? I downgraded to Lucid on my Dell E6510 laptop, because I need it rock solid/stable with working suspend/resume for my job. Using nvidia driver 195.36.24 + up to date Lucid is very stable for me (E6510 also as the NVS 3100M graphics adapter). Once I saw those NVRM errors with the nvidia 260 beta driver (and no official comments from nvidia about it being adressed) and realized that 256.X was unusable due to performance problems (and also failing suspend) *and* that 195.36.24 doesn't work with xserver 1.9, downgrade was a fact. I dropped to vesa drivers but that is not necessary. 1) Backup /etc/apt/sources.lst and change all instances of maverick for lucid 2) In Synaptic, remove xserver-xorg 3) Reload/update the sources and install xorg 4) Install the Nvidia driver which you know worked with Lucid. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 646860] Re: Touch-pad crazy with Ubuntu 10.04 on laptop Aspire 8530
Yesterday I installed Ubuntu-10.10-desktop-amd64 and since now I have no experienced openings of unwanted applications or windows caused by a jumping pointer, but I found that the difficulty on writing, for example this message, is still present an maybe now I can describe better the strange behavior, yet shown in a short movie attached to message #65. When one writes into a web page, for example, he can see and manage two pointers: the one (normally an arrow) of the Touch-pad/mouse and a little vertical bar in the text field he is using. Now what happens with my system is that such little vertical bar makes unwonted jumps from the point where I am writing to another one, while the arrow pointer remains steady. I tried to check if the problem occurs even with a word editor like OpenOffice and I verified that it works slightly better (the phenomenon is present but less frequent).
