[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 659703] [NEW] System freeze possibly due to memory corruption

2010-10-13 Thread Peter Sasi
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: libgl1-mesa-dri-experimental

System is Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick, just upgraded from Lucid, 4GB RAM
Lenovo ThinkPad T61, Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU T9300 @ 2.50GHz,
nVidia Corporation G84M [Quadro NVS 140M] (rev a1), kernel
2.6.35-22-generic, using Nouveau driver, Both single monitor (laptop)
and dual screen (laptop + external DVI or VGA) setups.

After installing libgl1-mesa-dri-experimental version 7.9~git20100924-0ubuntu2
for 3D support system locks up in random amount of time (2-30 minutes).
There is a visible image corruption on the background. Sometimes already on
boot, sometimes only later. Sometimes none, sometimes the lower part, sometimes
the whole background. It occours much more often with dual screen, using
laptop+DVI.

The time it takes to freeze seems to be related to images used: if I
load a 3000x3000 jpg (satelite image) in firefox it locks up
immediatelly, consistently. It does freeze ony using eg. 2 gnome
terminals, 1 firefox and 2 nautilus windows (no explicit 3D apps other
than compiz).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 659709] [NEW] Garbaged and locked up screen on resume from suspend

2010-10-13 Thread Peter Sasi
Public bug reported:

After installing libgl1-mesa-dri-experimental version

get random noise and some colored blocks on a locked up screen

Can only power off. After removing libgl1-mesa-dri-experimental package
suspend and resume is flowless.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 635258] Re: Garbled chars in xterm

2010-10-13 Thread robertjlee
I get the same problem with emacs, so it looks like this affects any
application using bitmap fonts.
From the look of it, single characters are more affected than large areas
(even on normal repaints where nothing has changed, eg switching desktops), so
my guess would be that something isn't properly clearing bitmaps at their
edges before copying them.
Using Maverick + compiz + gnome. Worked fine in 10.04

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 658170] Re: ati catalyst proprietary display driver not working after upgrade from 10.4 to 10.10 (amd64 ATI Radeon HD 4650)

2010-10-13 Thread nickleus
i jumped the gun too soon i'm afraid. it WORKS for a SINGLE desktop, but
NOT when i connect my laptop to an external monitor and try to split the
desktop between the two (multidesktop). the reason is probably the newer
kernel and that the hotfix from AMD doesnt work on 10.10 yet, or am i
wrong?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 659764] [NEW] 1024x768 instead of monitor native resolution

2010-10-13 Thread David Balažic
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

I boot the live environment from an USB stick, using the
ubuntu-10.10-desktop-i386.iso

The desktop comes up in 1024x768 instead of the monitor resolution of
1680x1050.

The Monitor Preferences offes only these 3 resolutions:
1024x768
800x600
640x480

Hopefully the attached logsco tell all the needed information.

The HW is a Toshiba L500-13T laptop, having a ATI Mobility Radeon™ HD
4570

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 657634] Re: [GeForce GT 330M] nvidia 260.19.06-0ubuntu1 update triggers black screen on boot for sony vaio F-series

2010-10-13 Thread Alberto Milone
Please install 260.19.06-ubuntu1 again, reboot and reproduce the crash.
Then save your /var/log/Xorg.0.log, your /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old and
dmesg in recovery mode and switch back to the driver that works for you.
Finally attach the 2 logs.

The attached X log and dmesg are about 256.53 therefore I can't see the
error.

2010-10-13 Thread Tomasz Czapiewski
Tormod, is there any chance to have aufs.ko module in Kernel Mainline
PPA kernels? I wanted to test if 2.6.36-rc7 solved the problem on my
machine, too on remastered (with xorg-edgers/radeon ppa) Kubuntu 10.10
pendrive but unfortunately I need aufs.ko module in initrd at boot which
is not included in that kernels and I can't even find source and configs
for these kernels to recompile just the module myself.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 659793] [NEW] xserver-xephyr: Couldn't find keyboard driver evdev

2010-10-13 Thread Oliver Breuer
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xephyr

When starting Xephyr with the following command line:

Xephyr :5 -ac -screen 1280x1024 -mouse evdev,,device=/dev/input/by-id
/usb-04d9_0499-event-mouse -keybd evdev,,device=/dev/input/by-id/usb-
Logitech_Logitech_USB_Keyboard-event-
kbd,xkbrules=xorg,xkbmodel=evdev,xkblayout=de,xkbvariant=nodeadkeys,xkboptions=lv3:ralt_switch,compose:caps
-dpi 100

The following messages are printed on the console:

[dix] Could not init font path element /usr/share/fonts/X11/cyrillic, removing
from list!
Kbd option key (compose:caps) of value ((null)) not assigned!
Couldn't find pointer driver evdev
Couldn't find keyboard driver evdev

The keyboard and mouse are not working.

When downgrading xserver-xephyr to version 2:1.7.6-2ubuntu7, the error
messages about evdev don't appear and keyboard and mouse work as
expected.

ProblemType: Bug
DistroRelease: Ubuntu 10.10
Package: xserver-xephyr 2:1.9.0-0ubuntu7

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 433142] Re: geode driver do not display 1024x600 on (K)UNR Karmic

2010-10-13 Thread frank huang
phpmonkey,
You can use cvt 1024 600 80 to generate the parameter, then write this
command value to replace my patch below:
+{MODEPREFIX, 48960, 1024, 1064, 1168, 1312, 0, 600, 601, 604, 622, 0,
+   V_NHSYNC | V_NVSYNC, MODESUFFIX}
+, /* 1024x...@60 */
Then you can get more modes to support. The above is the result of cvt 1024
600 60. So some modes will be pruned by X server.

Thanks,
Frank

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 655592] Re: [R300g][xorg-edgers] System hangs when using direct rendering

2010-10-13 Thread Tormod Volden
Tomasz, you will have to ask the Kernel Team about that. I can only
suggest that you do a regular install to your pendrive (instead of a
live CD remaster) if it has enough capacity.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 538648] Re: [Intel GM45] Irregular sync flashes on 8086:2a42 (Needs i915.powersave quirk)

2010-10-13 Thread Jan Hama
On Dell Latitude E4310 amd64 I have the same problem too
powersave=0 workaround does not work!
kernels 2.6.32.21 or 2.6.32 22 do not have the problem !
kernel 2.6.32.23, 2.6.32.24, 2.6.32.25 have the flicker problem !
so some update from 2.6.32 22 to 2.6.32.23 is probably buggy

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 659847] [NEW] X freezes after some time after enabling Compiz effects

2010-10-13 Thread Shein Alexey
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

I've found similar bugs, but according to some developer comment in there I
decided to report a new bug since it's more comfortable for them.
After enabling Compiz effects the system behave sometime normally but then
suddenly freezes (maybe on selection text with mouse).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 41301] Re: Mouse clicks stop working sporadically

2010-10-13 Thread pberndt
I can confirm comment #137 by Marcos Vinícius. The problem did not
affect me before I updated to Maverik.

Also, I noticed that xdotool click 1 (xdotool is a X11 macro
processor) does not work either. So the problem must lie somewhere
within XOrg.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 634683] Re: [gm45] Running piglit/occlusion-query-discard locks GPU

2010-10-13 Thread Richard Cesar
Hi, same problem here. I am using clean install od Kubuntu 10.10 with
latest updates. After boot, the compositing is temporarily disabled. I
am able to resume the compositing from KDE Control Center a then
everything is working fine. After some random time, when I use some KWin
effect (Tab-switching , desktop switching, desktop grid, ...), KDE hangs
and syslog become flooded by messages described in this bug.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 492782] Re: Mouse cursor disappears after restarting screen (xrandr / resume)

2010-10-13 Thread Otto Kekäläinen
There is also a question about this at
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-
intel/+question/108987

Common to all bug reports I read is that:
- The symptom is that the mouse pointer is invisible, but the mouse still
works: you can hover on stuff and click.
- The problem appears after the X mode changes (eg. while returning from blank
screen, returning from suspend, changing resolutions, other fiddling with
xrandr, sometimes even directly from boot).
- In some reports there are step-by-step how to reproduce while in some the
cursor disappears randomly. At least is is sure that for average bug reporters
it is hard to spot the pattern why/when the mouse pointer disappears.
- There are several workarounds that makes the X mode reload and thus brings
the mouse back:
-- switching back and fourth to a console (Ctrl+Alt+F1, Ctrl+Alt+F7)
-- opening Gnome terminal and writing something (some other apps too, but
writing in any app won't work)
- It seems that this bug is expressed on both Intel, ATI and Nvidia cards.
- The desktop environment seems always to be Gnome. Bug #457046 might be
related - there the cursor disappears because of a race condition in Gnome
which makes the cursor drawn under the window.
- Different Ubuntu releases and kernel versions are affected, however in some
bug reports upgrading to a new release/kernel made the problem go away. The
patch in bug #614176 comment #22 seems interesting.
- Bug #595282 hints it might be a problem in how X detects the display or some
interaction between xorg-server and kernel that messes the mouse pointer.
- According to bug #475917 removing the file ~/.config/monitors.xml prevents
expression of the bug.

Disclaimer: kernel drivers, Xorg, xrandr, Gnome display management etc is not
my expertise, so I don't know where the problem actually is. I however hope
this investigation helps somebody and decreases the number of new bugs of the
same issue.

If it turns out that this is now fixed in newer kernels, please backport
the fix to 10.04 LTS to increase it's stability.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 655592] Re: [R300g][xorg-edgers] System hangs when using direct rendering

2010-10-13 Thread Tomasz Czapiewski
Tormod, that's the problem - capacity. I wanted to test everything from
pendrive before I'll upgrade from 10.04 and configure stable system at home.
I've read at Ubuntu Wiki that Kernel Team won't include any drivers from Ubuntu
kernel to mainline kernels as that kernels are built from vanilla source to
test and report bugs upstream.

For now I've applied drm_kms_helper.pool parameter patch for 2.6.35-22-generic
kernel, rebuilt only drm modules, pack custom initrd and add option to syslinux
to choose that initrd and drm_kms_helper.pool=0 parameter.
It at least boots properly and doesn't bring problems for nouveau driver on my
Nvidia Quadro NVS135M based laptop at work.
I'll test if it helped later when I get back to home.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 301958] Re: [needs-packaging] no working driver for sis 671/771 video cards

2010-10-13 Thread Antonio J. de Oliveira
Thanks, Pander, corrected it.

Yesterday I tried until midnight to compile and test the 32-bit driver
on an external USB disk, no way, I can't do a proper install on a
Maverick 32-bit cd (gnome) on a usb disk as I did with the 64-bit. Even
the 32-bit usb image created by the standard ubuntu install cd does not
boot or the cd itself, in spite I have md5-checked it. I resorted to
xubuntu 10:10, which boots and I will retry. As a backup I installed
10.10 on another test computer, not having that graphics card. Will keep
you posted when I have something.

Cheers

Antonio

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 656279] Re: NVRM: os_raise_smp_barrier(), invalid context!

2010-10-13 Thread Øyvind Stegard
Daniel Karlsson wrote:
Same (i.e. frequent NVRM... records in syslog, co-occuring with resume from

I downgraded to Lucid on my Dell E6510 laptop, because I need it rock
solid/stable with working suspend/resume for my job. Using nvidia driver
195.36.24 + up to date Lucid is very stable for me (E6510 also as the
NVS 3100M graphics adapter). Once I saw those NVRM errors with the
nvidia 260 beta driver (and no official comments from nvidia about it
being adressed) and realized that 256.X was unusable due to performance
problems (and also failing suspend) *and* that 195.36.24 doesn't work
with xserver 1.9, downgrade was a fact. A pain, yes indeed, but I need
stuff that works right now.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 626974] Re: ABI change in xorg 1.9 breaks legacy nvidia-96 and nvidia-173 drivers in Maverick

2010-10-13 Thread ludwigmace
If you're not sure if your card uses a legacy Nvidia driver or not, please see
this list:
http://www.nvidia.com/object/IO_32667.html

It looks like this bug report is specifically for nvidia-96 and
nvidia-173 drivers. So if your card (or its PCI ID) isn't on the above
list underneath the 173.14.xx or 96.43.xx sections then unfortunately
you won't find much help in this bug report; somebody out there please
correct me if I'm wrong :)

And since 173.14.xx has already been fixed it looks like we're basically
waiting on 96.43.xx drivers, which I'm guessing will be out in about a
week or so.

If you can't fix it then downgrade it :D

Well those who couldn't get their Nvidia drivers working with Ubuntu
10.10 due to newer version of Xorg-Xserver try to do the following : (it
worked for me ;))

1) Remove any form of Nvidia drivers , configuration files and anything related
to it. I dropped to vesa drivers but that is not necessary.
1) Backup /etc/apt/sources.lst and change all instances of maverick for
lucid
2) In Synaptic, remove xserver-xorg
3) Reload/update the sources and install xorg
4) Install the Nvidia driver which you know worked with Lucid. In my case it is
195.36.24
5) change the sources.lst back to maverick
6) Reconfigure the xserver: sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
7 ) Now run these commands one after the another :
-- sudo update-alternatives --config gl_conf
-- sudo ldconfig
-- sudo update-initramfs -u
-- sudo nvidia-xconfig
8) Now using synaptic lock the version of these downgraded packages (xorg,
nvidia-current, etc ) so that they don't get upgraded automatically
9) Restart.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 532047] Re: Plymouth text-mode splash causes X to crash on first run due to shared tty7

2010-10-13 Thread John S. Gruber
Thanks for your comment, jedioetzi. I wonder if you would find it
worthwhile to look further for another report, or to open a new one,
perhaps with the command:

ubuntu-bug xorg

The 532047 bug has been marked fixed (and it was), and therefore may not
show up on many triagers' bug searches. (In addition those experiencing
this bug were getting SIGINT and SIGQUIT from particular key presses.
Yours is a segment fault.)

Whatever you decide, thanks for posting your experience and good luck
with maverick.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 527912] Re: Wacom Bamboo CTH-661 not recognized

2010-10-13 Thread Stefan Bader
Doh! I think I know what went wrong. I seem to have forgotten to add the
posinst files to let the installation run depmod. But don't do that right now,
if you could just download the package again (I replaced the files) and install
that version over, it should do it and the path of the wacom modules should
contain updates.
Running depmod is likely what happened to Mahendra.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 646860] Re: Touch-pad crazy with Ubuntu 10.04 on laptop Aspire 8530

2010-10-13 Thread Claudio Pighin
Yesterday I installed Ubuntu-10.10-desktop-amd64 and since now I have no
experienced openings of unwanted applications or windows caused by a jumping
pointer, but I found that the difficulty on writing, for example this message,
is still present an maybe now I can describe better the strange behavior, yet
shown in a short movie attached to message #65.
When one writes into a web page, for example, he can see and manage two
pointers: the one (normally an arrow) of the Touch-pad/mouse and a little
vertical bar in the text field he is using. Now what happens with my system is
that such little vertical bar makes unwonted jumps from the point where I am
writing to another one, while the arrow pointer remains steady.
I tried to check if the problem occurs even with a word editor like OpenOffice
and I verified that it works slightly better (the phenomenon is present but
less frequent).
Claudio :-)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 660001] [NEW] Touchpad is not recognized (e.g. vertical scroll does not work)

2010-10-13 Thread lancelot666
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-input-synaptics

It seems that the touchpad is not recognized correctly. The problem
occurs in the Live CD as well as in a freshly installed system.

Here is the output of tpconfig:

Found Synaptics Touchpad.
Firmware: 8.96 (multiple-byte mode).
Sensor type: unknown (0).
Geometry: rectangular/landscape/up.
Packets: absolute, 80 packets per second.
Corner taps disabled; no tap gestures.
Edge motion: none.
Z threshold: 6 of 7.

not possible to configure vertical/horizontal scroll.

2010-10-13 Thread Tory
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 652789 ***

I didn't have the time or skill to manually upgrade the kernel. But, I
just received an automatic kernel update. I'm now at 2.6.35-22-generic.
I ran the update, restarted, plugged in the monitor, went to the monitor
menu, and at that point it crashed before I even saw the window.

If it makes a difference, my current install started from Ubuntu beta
10.10 but has stayed current with updates and should now be full 10.10 I
assume.
