I had the same effect again after a longer while. What I notice is that for a longer time I did not use the suspend feature. This time I did. My workflow was about this: 1. Worked with Thunderbird, Firefox, Skype, Shutter, Keepassx, Dropbox and others 2. Put the laptop (Dell Latitude E-5500) to suspend. 3. Wake-up after a few hours. 4. Did several emails, browsing - everything still fine, starting NetBeans was my last action, as far as I remember. 5. Went away, screen got saver activate after a few minutes 6. When I returned, logging in already was slow. I opened a terminal (which took a while) and run xrandr - everything fine again. Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 562005] Re: Backlight controls of laptops with NVIDIA NVS and Quadro FX 880M GPUs no longer function while using proprietary drivers
Yes, when the display turns off sometimes it cannot be turned back on. Instead of restarting I do something like: Ctrl+Alt+F1 and then back Alt+F7 (or wherever your X is). That turns the display back on when it's stuck. This is surely a bug and it appeared with older versions of the Nvidia driver. Now it's back on the stage if it had ever been fixed at all. On Tue, Oct 26, 2010 at 4:44 AM, Jon Packard jonpack...@gmail.com wrote: I just did a fresh install of Maverick 64-bit on my HP EliteBook 8440p with NVS 3100m graphics. I still had to use nomodeset to install and to boot thereafter, but that's not an issue. After installing the nVidia proprietary drivers, I found that whenever my notebook tries to power its screen off, it gets stuck as black and has to be restarted to fix. The computer is still responsive, since I can ctrl-alt-del, enter, tab, enter to poweroff. I have tried adding the [Option RegistryDwords EnableBrightnessControl=1] line to the device section of my xorg.conf and rebooting, just as I did in Lucid. Unlike in Lucid, this did not resolve my issue. My nvidia driver version is 260.19.06-0ubuntu1. Could anyone please suggest any workarounds I could try? I can suspend just fine, but I often like to shut my screen and let my notebook continue working. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 650539] Re: Launching QT apps under Xinerama crashes Xorg : affects SpeedCrunch, KeePassX, Lucky Backup, Pencil, Stellarium, Skype, Google Earth, VLC, Konqueror, VirtualBox, Opera
Chag's fix worked perfectly for me! I had the exact same problem and setup * nvidia card with dual monitor, with one monitor rotated * upgraded to Ubuntu Maverick * X started up fine, but when I tried to move any window, the whole X server would segfault I rebuild xserver-xorg-core according to instructions in comment #91 (which I will call the SHAZAM fix), and everything's back to normal. I did try for several hours to get XRandR to work, and failed with every combination. It just seems impossible to get it to rotate a single monitor, and have a unified X screen for the whole desktop (i.e. be able to drag windows between monitors). Does anyone know *why* Xinerama is deprecated, since it seems to be the only solution for several uncommon- but-useful desktop setups? -- Launching QT apps under Xinerama crashes Xorg : affects SpeedCrunch, KeePassX, Lucky Backup, Pencil, Stellarium, Skype, Google Earth, VLC, Konqueror, VirtualBox, Opera ... https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/650539 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

Your Xorg.0.log shows you're using the Intel driver. So I guess your laptop has Switchable graphics and the Intel graphics device is the one that's enabled by default. The only way for you to use the RadeonHD 4330 under Linux at this time is to disable the Intel graphics in the BIOS setup. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 622926] [NEW] Switch User fails on return trip
You have been subscribed to a public bug: Binary package hint: indicator-session Lynx 10.04.1 Up-to-date. Nvidia 3DForce FX5600 card. DESCRIPTION: Switching users is not reliable; when switching users, often when returning to the first logged-on user, the computer ends up a blank screen and I must turn it fully off with the power button. Success is somewhat likely if a minimum of programs are running. I prefer a complete log-off, as it is. OTHER INFO: Because there is a lot of screen flickering generally during these operations, I have taken care to make the monitor settings identical. But this doesn't help. I use Ubuntu Lynx with Gnome desktop. I have an Nvidia 3DForce FX5600, set to 1280x960 at 60hz; displayed on a ViewSonic VG2021m. Desktop effects is set to lowest/normal (solves bad screen-flicker issue). The gnome-power-manager app is removed because it caused problems when logging off. ** Description changed: I have problems to deinstall fglrx. Further more the problem I have is: sometimes cairo-dock has a black area as background and then i can't start (and use) compiz. I have figured out some way to reinstall compiz then the problems with cairo-dock disappeared but now i tried to update Ubuntu and the display freezed, so I restarted the GUI. Now the problem is back again and cairo-dock isn't starting during start/boot although its activated to start automatically. + + To explain an interessant conflict and for general information: I wanted + to deinstall fglrx because it's a ATI driver and I have Intel + GM965/GL960. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 660451] Re: X memory leak
Just figured out what is going on here. It was actually chromium causing the leakage in the X server when it has GPU Accelerated Canvas 2D enabled (it's off by default). I just disabled it, restarted X and now things are working brilliantly again. W h. Now, whether or not there is a bug in chromium, the fact that X leaks memory due to a misbehaving application is clearly not right, so can somebody else who is seeing this (or if you aren't, please try to see if you can trigger the bug by enabling the 2d acceleration in chromium) so we can get the proper information to the developers? -- X memory leak https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/660451 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg-server in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[code]xrandr --output VGA1 --mode 1024x768 --rate 60[/code] -- resolution 1280 768 not available cannot update with xrandr https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/479844 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-sis in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
