I'm not able to understand the situation properly. When the cursor is
stuck, you can log the xev events showing the stuck behavior.

But are you sure you cannot demonstrate this stuck behavior in VT, in
evtest. It means you cannot reproduce the bug in VT, is it correct?

What you have to do is simply switch to VT, when everything is all
right. Run evtest, see the events flowing when you touch on your
touchpad and then try to reproduce the bug by touchpad at the upper left
corner and then again touch at different positions to verify whether the
bug has been reproduced or not in VT. Try this very carefully..

As far as I know, this behaviour is more or less intentional and the
_bug_ is that it can't be turned off, even in the newest versions of X
and synaptics. A hackish workaround is here:

Well since SIS is lack of capability so don't force yourself to make it work 
perfectly for 2monitor. For me also always see a glitch not even once when 
using the modification driver. Use 1 Monitor is quite good already and try to 
maximize the use of workspace so you can save your time and thinking with us 
about how to make it work for repetitive release of ubuntu family. Since it was 
lack of 3D Support.

For the configuration file, if you still insist to make it work for 2
Monitor try to see Winischhofer page. He explained quite clear regarding
all techy stuff and also configuration things :)

I got back to my machine in the morning to find that the display showed a 
slightly corrupted opengl screensaver image with the following text at the top 
of the screen:

with all my other apps and processes.
xscreensaver master process is still running too. It does not respond to

(or -version)

Which seems to shwo that the X socket simply isn't responding, so the
server is dead to useful activity.

hupping the X process doesn't help. restarting gdm (and thus X) makes
the display fill with random stuff (lots of little tiles of X stuff) but
the keyboard is still dead. Only rebooting the machine gets you back to
a useful state.

This appears to be the same bug as

Hi Gursimran,

yes, I'm positive that this bug doesn't affect VT. I tested it again and
again, the pointer moved properly throughout the test.

Again, since the pointer can be recovered by Alt-F7 (or Alt-F8), it's
unlikely a synaptics bug. More likely, it's an X bug but only triggered
by some types of touchpad.

xev log clearly shows the bug, position root:(0,0) never changes with
MotionNotify events.

As I mentioned, when the pointer is trapped at root:(0,0), the touchpad
basically works, I can still tap-2-click, xev records MotionEvents as
well. This explains how I took the xev log mentioned.

still, is there a way to make X more verbose on events?

I'm using Ubuntu 10.04, recently upgraded from Ubuntu 9.10 through the upgrade 
option on the update manager.
I have a laptop with a resolution of 1280x800 attached to a monitor of 1680x960 
resolution. I have an nVidia graphics card configured to use twinview with both 
monitors on the same origin.

The background image with the 'zoom' style, makes the size of the
background have a wrong size, as if two background layers are placed on
top of each other, one with size 1280x800 and the other with size
1680x960.

The screenshot shows what's going on.

What's supposed to happen? Show only one image on the background whose
size is 1680x960.

I had 10.04 64-bit running fine on my machine for a couple months. 10.10
came out and I decided to upgrade to the 64-bit version. When I
restarted my computer after the installation, I got stuck at a black
screen with a blinking white cursor. I tried reinstalling with a usb
stick, had the same problem. Is it a graphics driver issue perhaps? I'm
running at ATI Radeon 5750. Also note that I had this problem when I
installed 10.04 for the first time as well. The way I fixed it then was
by running some terminal commands in the live CD boot. I tried doing
that, but found I couldn't even load my live CD anymore. Does anyone
know what's going on here?

connected to the internet through my local network and edge firewall, so
I also selected to have updates applied during installation. During the
setup I assigned passwords for both the root and normal user. Those
passwords had whitespace (specifically, ASCII 0x20) in them.

When setup completed and the system booted into graphical mode, I
couldn't login to either the normal nor root account until I switched to
an alternate text console, logged in and changed the password so there
was no whitespace. After changing the password of the normal user, I was
able to switch back to graphical mode and login to the normal user
account using the new password.

While in text mode, I had also gone into aptitude and applied all
updates available for all installed packages and checked for any broken
packages (there weren't any). I did try doing a graphical login after
applying all available updates. It wasn't until I used a password
without whitespace that login was successful.

If it helps any, I too am getting this and I've been using gcore to
generate a core file from the Xorg process.

I have two nVidia G-series video cards:
 * GeForce 9400 GT - this drives screen 1 (middle)
 * GeForce 8600 GT - this drives screen 0 and screen 2 (left and right)

My xorg.conf section that defines this:
Section ServerLayout
Identifier Layout0
Screen  0  Screen0 0 0
Screen  1  Screen1 RightOf Screen0
Screen  2  Screen2 RightOf Screen1
InputDeviceKeyboard0 CoreKeyboard

In my case, it locks up at the border between screens about evenly so I
don't think it's strictly a Screen0:Screen1 border issue...

I'm running a fully updated Ubuntu 10.04, and I'm able to install any
developer tools to assist in debugging and/or dumping the core file
data.

I currently have Kubuntu 10.04.1 on my ASUS G60JX laptop and everything
works fine, but when I try booting the live CD of the beta it goes to
splash screen, and then my screen gets all sorts of screwed up,
sometimes I'll see images from my desktop on Kubuntu before I rebooted,
stuff like that. The only way I can boot to the live desktop is by using
the nomodeset option which makes me believe that this is probably
related to the nvidia drivers, my laptop has a NVIDIA GEFORCE GTS 360M

No (but I will, and will report back).

Instead, I installed Xubuntu (using the XFCE desktop  GDM). But that 
has it's own set of (known) problems wrt to remote graphical login using 
VNC, namely that GDM doesn't fully support XDMCP, so no desktop is 
created after trying to login remotely (I had the same problem when I 
upgraded from Debian Etch to Lenny).

I'll install Maverick in a VM to check, but I'm installing a new hard 
drive in the machine that contains all my VMs and since I'm a belt  
suspenders kind of guy, I use the -cc option to mkfs, so creating 500 
MB partitions takes almost 40 hours each. I expect that it'll be about a 
week before I can report back.

Still I'm curious to know, what is the behavior in windows and other OS.

I keep my system up to date, but the bug is still out there...
Chauncellor, which version of Xorg supposed not to have this bug, and when it 
should be released(if at all)?
What can be done for now, except praying?
Maybe there is a way to debug it myself? I am familiar with C, C++, Java and 
Scheme :-)

Reported this bug as a gnome-terminal issue but it actually affects my
entire X desktop.

My Ubuntu desktop mysteriously freezes until I press a key on the
keyboard or move the mouse. The entire desktop stops updating. The GNOME
clock stops ticking off seconds, cursors stop flashing in web browsers
or terminal windows. Simply moving the mouse brings everything back to
life.

The following bash command line shows that this issue is causing
processes to block. The gaps below where seconds are skipped are where I
saw the desktop freeze, waited a little while, and then moved the mouse
to bring everything back to life. The bash process was obviously frozen
during the gaps because it didn't print out the missing seconds after
the mouse movement.

I'm willing to help troubleshoot this issue further. (I'm a C++
programmer.) Note I have a more recent Catalyst driver installed because
bugs in the stock Ubuntu Catalyst package were causing me problems (with
development of a game).

It appears I don't even get as far as the above.

I just bought this laptop and have this same problem. Right now I have
an external mouse plugged in because using the trackpad causes the arrow
to fly around the screen wildly, left- and right-clicking all the way.
My first thought was that it was just waaa too sensitive but then I

Ok, I solved my problem!!!

I'm embarrassed to tell you my solution but I found the magic button to
activate the mouse (Fn + F7), and then I remember that the problem
started after switched the session (CTRL+ALT+F7)...

Very embarrassed...

Unfortunately, I don't see this getting fixed unless the cause is found

Same thing with touchscreen from different brand on a packard bell
butterfly touch.

My screens are not on top of each other, but besides one another. On the
touchscreen i'd like to navigate through a PDF, while writing on a text
file on the regular screen. Doesn't work, since the coordinates of the
touchscreen seem to be spread relatively over the whole xscreen (both
physical screens)...

This seems to be a feature request I guess...
But an important feature I'd say, since theres no use of a single touchscreen 
in a dual head environment with the present setting.

This bug not only affects xorg-video-ati, but also intel graphics. In fact, I 
think it is not related to the graphics driver, but the xrandr tool.
I have same problem with a packard bell butterfly touch with an intel GMA 
X4500HD graphics adapter.

Same Problem here with an MSI X360 Intel i5 Book. Maverick
2.6.35-22-generic

Same message, Compiz works flawlessly, HDMI withound Problems, Display
without Problems...

But it seems to be always the same... Everytime i got an Intel Book, the 
Graphicboars dont seem
to work without problem... Its always the same thing with this damn Intel cards 
!
They are slow and if they dont work, you can wait a year for a solution, thats 
freedom ;-)

What should we do now to get it on the run ? 5 million Pepole telling it doesnt 
work, wont help
for a solution ;-)

Please note that xterm looks for ~/.Xdefaults-hostname, not
~/.Xdefaults:

Setting *customization: -color in there solves this.
Another workaround is to:

and comment out the call to include XTerm at the beginning:

Thanks for reporting this bug and any supporting documentation. Since
this bug has enough information provided for a developer to begin work,
I'm going to mark it as confirmed and let them handle it from here.

I can confirm that upgrading from one release to the next with the
Nvidia hardware drivers installed will cause this issue. The only
workaround I have found is to remove and reinstall the drivers. If the
hardware drivers are removed prior to upgrading, this does not appear.

I attached four log files. I notice many rtkit-daemon error messages in
syslog. The process 1962 mentioned in those error messages at the very
bottom of syslog is a pulseaudio process.

Also note, I upgraded to Ubuntu 10.10 today but I still see the issue. I
believe the system is now using the proprietary 10.8 Catalyst driver
included with Ubuntu.

Seeing the same here, regardless of running compiz. In fact, every full
screen Flash crashes (cannot Esq to quit; need to ctrl-alt-F2 and kill
browser and plugin-containe or restart gdm).

Yeah, 2.6.36 in the mainline ppa (comment #19) fixed it for me, too. As
it was a kernel issue, I marked it invalid here. I'm not sure if that is
the correct label, but it wasn't the xorg people's problem in any case

An xserver-xorg-video-intel patch came through today:

Disable Xv code on sandybridge generation GPU's only, support does not
exist in this driver release and it attempts to use an old code path
that causes a GPU hang every time it is used.

I am a victim of this bug since version 10.04.  I've been using Ubuntu
since 2006 and it's the first time that a bug last this long and is so
annoying.

I have a full updated 10.10-64 bit Ubuntu version and the bug is still
affecting me.  I can almost tell when the crash will arrive.

The only thing that works when the bug arrives is Alt+PrintSc+S+U+B.
Alt+F1 or Alt+F7 or any other combination does not do anything.

We are four on the same family computer. I run a lot of image processing
and I never know when my process will crash just  because on of my child
only wants to chat with someone in there account.

I'm almost at the point were I would like to test some other
distribution or even go back to Windows.

I really like Ubuntu and since 2006 I'm a passionate user but this one
is realy bad, a real showstopper.

Please help!

More information, when I unplug the the keyboard I regain left button.
This is not the same as 636311 as I don't use any of the media buttons
or special keys. Simply starting a video (no matter what kind of video,
from flash to mkv through VLC to .vob through totem) makes left click
unusable as long as my keyboard is plugged in

Hi Fabio,

the 6003C8 error is a well known consequence of touchpad's second query
as /dev/input/mouse*, is harmless, and can be easily avoided, as shown
in the attached Xorg.0.lo

anyway, I'm sending the syslog kern.log still.

Also, it's confirmed that archlinux is free from this bug, seems to be a
ubuntu bug.
