[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 680878] Re: dual head: wrong character display -- font artefacts
I removed the edgers (sudo ppa-purge xorg-edgers) and restart X, but the problem remains. So I set status back to New. ** Changed in: xorg (Ubuntu) Status: Invalid = New ** Tags added: apport-collected ** Description changed: Binary package hint: xorg Originally I posted the problem for emacs23 (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/emacs23/+bug/674488). But the problem is not restricted to this program. It also happens e.g. in OO and unison. Since the update to Maverick Meerkat I got very strange characters in emacs23 (see attachment). The characters are somehow shuffled into each other. This happens if I fast move through a line. If I leave the line or shortly switch to another window, all is fine again. For emacs23 the problem depends on font settings. If I disable anti-aliasing the problem disappears. In OpenOffice (oowriter) there is a strange behaviour: comments are agglomerated at the bottom while scrolling. The problem arises only in dual head mode. When I turn of the laptop screen and only use the external monitor, all is fine. I could not use ubuntu-bug ($ ubuntu-bug xorg) to report this problem. I got the error message: Das Problem kann nicht gemeldet werden: Dies ist kein echtes Ubuntu-Paket... [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 682143] [NEW] Nvidia settings doesn't allow to set clock frequencies even if coolbits = 1
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: nvidia-settings I enabled coolbits in Xorg.conf (attached) then I started nvidia settings, enabled overclocking but after changing the sliders and click apply they reset to original position and nvidia settings sets the default values. I tried the command line: sudo nvidia-settings --assign GPU3DClockFreqs=160,125 Attribute 'GPU3DClockFreqs' (kenzy-laptop:0.0) assigned value 160,125. After that: sudo nvidia-settings --query GPU3DClockFreqs Attribute 'GPU3DClockFreqs' (kenzy-laptop:0.0): 640,500. The valid values for 'GPU3DClockFreqs' are in the ranges 160 - 1280, 125 - 1416 (inclusive). 'GPU3DClockFreqs' can use the following target types: X Screen, GPU. Don't know if it's related to the driver or nvidia-settings. I even tried to upgrade my nvidia-settings to latest version, same problem. Neither Xorg log nor dmesg report something about nvidia driver that seems related to this problem. With lucid everythings works okay. Also found another user with the same problem: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=10113085 Everything worked okay in lucid. ** Affects: nvidia-settings (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Nvidia settings doesn't allow to set clock frequencies even if coolbits = 1 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/682143 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to nvidia-settings in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 680614] Re: Position of second monitor wrong in dual monitor setup if first monitor is 1366x768
This bug appears to be the same as #666058 and #472716. But it is described here more precisely. The reason for the problem is a wrong selection of the area of the extended desktop for the second screen. I experience the same problem using a 1366x768 screen and 1280x1024 in dual view mode. It happens both with deactivated and activated fglrx driver. As reported by Andreas Gölzer the effect vanishes as soon as a more common resolution is chosen instead of the 1366x768. Anyway, it probably affects a lot of users using their laptop together with an external screen. Does anyone know a possibility to configure the position of the shown area of the extended desktop for each screen? [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 36812] Re: Keyboard layout change on hotkeys press instead of release and do not work well with shortcuts
Thank you for taking the time to report this issue. However, I'm declining this as a paper cut because this bug is not trivially fixable. A paper cut is a small usability problem in default and featured applications that affect many users. Please note that I'm marking this as Invalid for the One Hundred Paper Cuts project ONLY. I've opened a new task for Xorg in Ubuntu—which was missing—that makes this bug show up on the radar of the people whose task it is to look after X. Previously this tasked lacked, so the Ubuntu X developers couldn't have known this bug existed. A task for xorg should have been added when this bug was marked as Invalid for control-center. ** Also affects: xorg (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Project changed: hundredpapercuts = null ** Changed in: null Status: New = Invalid -- Keyboard layout change on hotkeys press instead of release and do not work well with shortcuts https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/36812 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is a direct subscriber. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 682198] [NEW] Keyboard backlight does not function under Ubuntu
You have been subscribed to a public bug: There are quite a few models of keyboards that come equipped with a keyboard backlight. Sadly, most of these do not have drivers for Linux. Below is some code that allows control of the backlight on all keyboards I've tested (mainly XtremeIT series, but it does also work on a few other models) #!/bin/bash if [ -f /tmp/keyboard_light ]; then xset -led 3 rm /tmp/keyboard_light else xset led 3 touch /tmp/keyboard_light fi I would ask this is put into Ubuntu, if only to provide a cleaner experience. ** Affects: xorg (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Keyboard backlight does not function under Ubuntu https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/682198 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 36812] Re: Keyboard layout change on hotkeys press instead of release and do not work well with shortcuts
** Description changed: - I have Ctrl+Shift set to layout switch and press ctrl+shift+N (to open - new Terminal or new tab in Opera) -- as a result I have my keyboard - layout switched. This happens because Ubuntu (or XOrg?) change layout on - key press instead of release and do not match layout hotkeys with - application shortcuts. MS Windows do. If layout change hotkeys is - pressed with another key this must be treated as application shortcut - and layout must not be changed. Combined with shortcut bugs in some - Linux applications [Bug 2561] this makes keyboard shortcuts nearly - unusable in default bilingual configuration. + This is a bug about shortcuts mapped to combinations which include each + other. + + For example, if we have Ctrl+Shift (for keyboard layout) and Ctrl+Shift+N (to open a new terminal), then we are practically unable to use the second shortcut; this is what happens: + Ctrl press (nothing happens) + Shift press (keyboard layout change) + N (a simple N appears, since a shortcut has already fired) + + The expected behavior is to fire shortcuts on the release (not on press) + of the special keys (ctrl, shift, alt, etc) which is also how Windows + behave. This is a serious problem for bilingual layouts, typically using + Alt+Shift or Ctrl+Shift for keyboard layout change. + + + For users being affected by this problem, the easiest solution for now is to add this PPA in your repositories: + https://launchpad.net/~oded-geek/+archive/xorg-patches + + + Practical summary of this bug for ubuntu developers (since reading 120 comments is impractical for most): + This problem is a really old (since 2004) issue of the xkb part of xorg; the main discussion was made upstream in freedesktop-bugs #865. There has been a patch from Ilya Murav'jov for upstream (#55), and attached here (#61). + Upstream xorg has refused to apply the patch, mainly because it explicitly contradicts the (xkb) spec (#84, #91). + This patch has been reported to work for many people without any problems, and there is also a PPA by Oded Arbel (#95) where he maintains a patched version of the ubuntu xorg. + The proper resolution of this bug would be to apply this patch in the upstream xorg, or at minimum to the official ubuntu xorg package. ** Description changed: ** Description changed: This is a bug about shortcuts mapped to combinations which include each other. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 682287] [NEW] Black Screen at Start
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-sis I have an old acre aspire 3500 with sis graphic video card. When Ubuntu start with 2.6.35.26-generic and screen resolution is 1024x768 the computer show only black screen. However, I noticed it is in working condition because if I blindly hit Ctrl+Alt+Delete and then press enter, the computer proceed with normal shut down. But if the Ubuntu start with 2.6.35.23-generic and the screen resolution is 1024x768 it works fine without the black start-up screen. Therefore, I changed the monitor to the next available resolution which is 1024x576 and did restart I found that the computer is working normally. I tried the recommendations in bug 584339 and add sisfb to grub and install v86d but without any success. Please inform what I can do to restore the screen resolution to 1024x768 without black screen at start.
