Yes I had a mouse attached while reporting this problem but the lines
you quoted stand for the touchpad. My mouse is detected correctly as
Ci25m Notebk Optical.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 680878] Re: dual head: wrong character display -- font artefacts

2010-11-27 Thread Christian Knuepfer
I removed the edgers (sudo ppa-purge xorg-edgers) and restart X, but the
problem remains. So I set status back to New.

** Changed in: xorg (Ubuntu)
   Status: Invalid = New

** Tags added: apport-collected

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: xorg

Originally I posted the problem for emacs23
  (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/emacs23/+bug/674488). But the
problem is not restricted to this program. It also happens e.g. in OO
  and unison.

Since the update to Maverick Meerkat I got very strange characters in
emacs23 (see attachment). The characters are somehow shuffled into each
other. This happens if I fast move through a line. If I leave the line
or shortly switch to another window, all is fine again. For emacs23 the
problem depends on font settings. If I disable anti-aliasing the problem
  disappears.

In OpenOffice (oowriter) there is a strange behaviour: comments are
agglomerated at the bottom while scrolling.

The problem arises only in dual head mode. When I turn of the laptop
screen and only use the external monitor, all is fine.

I could not use ubuntu-bug ($ ubuntu-bug xorg) to report this problem. I
got the error message: Das Problem kann nicht gemeldet werden: Dies ist
  kein echtes Ubuntu-Paket...

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 672621] Re: USB mouse takes minutes to work after reboot

2010-11-27 Thread kamereon
It helps to just completely unplug the computer for a minute or so. After that,
it will work normally for the next twentysomething boot processes...
I'm guessing it has something to do with suspend to RAM, but I cannot really
reproduce this on purpose. It just happens ervery now and then.
will look into bios update soonish, never done it before.

Thanks for the help

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 682143] [NEW] Nvidia settings doesn't allow to set clock frequencies even if coolbits = 1

2010-11-27 Thread McKenzie
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nvidia-settings

I enabled coolbits in Xorg.conf (attached) then I started nvidia
settings, enabled overclocking but after changing the sliders and click
apply they reset to original position and nvidia settings sets the
default values.

I tried the command line:
sudo nvidia-settings --assign GPU3DClockFreqs=160,125

  Attribute 'GPU3DClockFreqs' (kenzy-laptop:0.0) assigned value 160,125.

After that:
sudo nvidia-settings --query GPU3DClockFreqs

  Attribute 'GPU3DClockFreqs' (kenzy-laptop:0.0): 640,500.
The valid values for 'GPU3DClockFreqs' are in the ranges 160 - 1280, 125 -
1416 (inclusive).
'GPU3DClockFreqs' can use the following target types: X Screen, GPU.

Don't know if it's related to the driver or nvidia-settings. I even
tried to upgrade my nvidia-settings to latest version, same problem.

Neither Xorg log nor dmesg report something about nvidia driver that
seems related to this problem.

With lucid everythings works okay. Also found another user with the same
problem:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=10113085

Everything worked okay in lucid.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 626974] Re: ABI change in xorg 1.9 breaks legacy nvidia-96 drivers in Maverick

2010-11-27 Thread Sebastiano
Still have problems even with new driver version. Reading through X log,
it seems that glx module loaded is the one shipped by X.org and not by
NVIDIA. is that correct?

X won't start and crashes with a segfault, even if AddARGBGLXVisuals is true in
xorg.conf (created from scratch by jockey).
Any idea?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 682196] [NEW] Merge xdm 1:1.1.10-3 (universe) from Debian unstable (main)

2010-11-27 Thread Artur Rona
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xdm

   [ Samuel Thibault ]
   * Remove vt7 option on hurd-i386 (closes: #584829).

xdm (1:1.1.10-2) unstable; urgency=low

   [ Julien Cristau ]
   * debian.diff: stop defining XDMAUTHDIR, it's not used anymore.
   * debian.diff: replace references to the XFree86 X server with Xorg.
   * Set default system and user PATHs when running configure instead of
 patching xdm-config.
   * Drop obsolete upgrade code from pre-etch versions in preinst, postinst and
 postrm scripts.

   [ Sven Joachim ]
   * xdm.init: Implement status option (Closes: #583802).
 - Bump dependency on lsb-base to 3.2-14 for status_of_proc().

 -- Julien Cristau jcris...@debian.org Sun, 06 Jun 2010 18:09:21 +0200
xdm (1:1.1.10-1) unstable; urgency=low

   * New upstream release.
 - don't delete the pid file from child xdm processes, closes: #372114
 - clear the Login incorrect message properly on next login,
   closes: #525596. Thanks, Martin Dickopp!
 - fix xdmcp with net.ipv6.bindv6only=1
   * Patches merged upstream:
 - 02_xdm_zombie_no_error.diff
 - 15_xdm_openfiles.diff
 - 90_xdm_write_dummy_auth.diff
 - 91_xdm_saveserverauth_logging.diff
 - log_sourcing_better.diff
 - selinux_support.diff
 - storepid_rewrite.diff
   * Xstartup: use id -u $USER, not id -u, since this script is run as root.
 See #118677.
   * debian/rules: delete libtool m4 files on clean.
   * Introduce virtual facility x-display-manager for insserv
 (closes: #554839). Thanks, Jonas Meurer!
   * debian/rules: kill gratuitous uses of $(CURDIR).
   * debian/xdm.pam: @include common-* after pam_env and friends, so that we
still set env vars if e.g. common-auth contains a 'sufficient' module
 (closes: #83).
   * debian/xdm.init: add Short-Description (closes: #510085).

 -- Julien Cristau jcris...@debian.org Mon, 19 Apr 2010 20:55:56 +0200
xdm (1:1.1.9-2) unstable; urgency=low

   [ Cyril Brulebois ]
   * Add debian/patches/doc_mention_xdm.options.diff: mention
xdm.options(5) in xdm(1), as suggested by Chris Pimlott some years ago
 (Closes: #135692).
   * Add myself to Uploaders.
   * Add ${misc:Depends}, and wrap Depends.

   [ Julien Cristau ]
   * greeter: fix logging of failed login attempts (cherry-picked from upstream
 git), closes: #576360.

 -- Cyril Brulebois k...@debian.org Thu, 08 Apr 2010 23:13:05 +0200
xdm (1:1.1.9-1) unstable; urgency=low

   [ Julien Cristau ]
   * Xreset, Xstartup: don't add /usr/bin/X11 to PATH.
   * xdm.postrm: remove /etc/X11/default-display-manager on purge if it exists
and points to xdm. Fixes piuparts failure.
   * xdm.prerm uses ps, add Depends on procps.
   * Update patches 20_xdm_log_timestamp.diff and 21_xdm_log_append.diff.
   * Drop 01_xdm_include_fcntl.diff, not necessary.
   * 15_xdm_openfiles.diff: only keep the race condition fix. The other change
allowed passing NULL as third argument to openFiles(), and used to have an
accompanying change in SetUserAuthorization() which seems to have
disappeared since then, so this isn't necessary anymore.
   * log_sourcing_better.diff: resurrect patch header from the monolith's
 078_xdm_log_sourcing_better.diff.
   * Rename the build directory to not include DEB_BUILD_GNU_TYPE for no

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 680614] Re: Position of second monitor wrong in dual monitor setup if first monitor is 1366x768

2010-11-27 Thread Christian Kluge
This bug appears to be the same as #666058 and #472716. But it is
described here more precisely. The reason for the problem is a wrong
selection of the area of the extended desktop for the second screen.

I experience the same problem using a 1366x768 screen and 1280x1024 in
dual view mode. It happens both with deactivated and activated fglrx
driver. As reported by Andreas Gölzer the effect vanishes as soon as a
more common resolution is chosen instead of the 1366x768. Anyway, it
probably affects a lot of users using their laptop together with an
external screen.

Does anyone know a possibility to configure the position of the shown
area of the extended desktop for each screen?

Best regards,
Christian

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 36812] Re: Keyboard layout change on hotkeys press instead of release and do not work well with shortcuts

2010-11-27 Thread Sense Hofstede
Thank you for taking the time to report this issue. However, I'm
declining this as a paper cut because this bug is not trivially fixable.
A paper cut is a small usability problem in default and featured
applications that affect many users.

Please note that I'm marking this as Invalid for the One Hundred Paper Cuts
project ONLY.
I've opened a new task for Xorg in Ubuntu—which was missing—that makes this bug
show up on the radar of the people whose task it is to look after X. Previously
this tasked lacked, so the Ubuntu X developers couldn't have known this bug
existed. A task for xorg should have been added when this bug was marked as
Invalid for control-center.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 682198] [NEW] Keyboard backlight does not function under Ubuntu

2010-11-27 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

There are quite a few models of keyboards that come equipped with a
keyboard backlight. Sadly, most of these do not have drivers for Linux.

Below is some code that allows control of the backlight on all keyboards
I've tested (mainly XtremeIT series, but it does also work on a few
other models)

#!/bin/bash
if [ -f /tmp/keyboard_light ]; then
xset -led 3 rm /tmp/keyboard_light
else
xset led 3 touch /tmp/keyboard_light
fi

I would ask this is put into Ubuntu, if only to provide a cleaner
experience.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 36812] Re: Keyboard layout change on hotkeys press instead of release and do not work well with shortcuts

2010-11-27 Thread Nick Andrik
** Description changed:

- I have Ctrl+Shift set to layout switch and press ctrl+shift+N (to open
- new Terminal or new tab in Opera) -- as a result I have my keyboard
- layout switched. This happens because Ubuntu (or XOrg?) change layout on
- key press instead of release and do not match layout hotkeys with
- application shortcuts. MS Windows do. If layout change hotkeys is
- pressed with another key this must be treated as application shortcut
- and layout must not be changed. Combined with shortcut bugs in some
- Linux applications [Bug 2561] this makes keyboard shortcuts nearly
- unusable in default bilingual configuration.
+ This is a bug about shortcuts mapped to combinations which include each
+ other.
+
+ For example, if we have Ctrl+Shift (for keyboard layout) and Ctrl+Shift+N (to
open a new terminal), then we are practically unable to use the second
shortcut; this is what happens:
+ Ctrl press (nothing happens)
+ Shift press (keyboard layout change)
+ N (a simple N appears, since a shortcut has already fired)
+
+ The expected behavior is to fire shortcuts on the release (not on press)
+ of the special keys (ctrl, shift, alt, etc) which is also how Windows
+ behave. This is a serious problem for bilingual layouts, typically using
+ Alt+Shift or Ctrl+Shift for keyboard layout change.
+
+
+ For users being affected by this problem, the easiest solution for now is to
add this PPA in your repositories:
+
+
+ Practical summary of this bug for ubuntu developers (since reading 120
comments is impractical for most):
+ This problem is a really old (since 2004) issue of the xkb part of xorg; the
main discussion was made upstream in freedesktop-bugs #865. There has been a
patch from Ilya Murav'jov for upstream (#55), and attached here (#61).
+ Upstream xorg has refused to apply the patch, mainly because it explicitly
contradicts the (xkb) spec (#84, #91).
+ This patch has been reported to work for many people without any problems,
and there is also a PPA by Oded Arbel (#95) where he maintains a patched
version of the ubuntu xorg.
+ The proper resolution of this bug would be to apply this patch in the
upstream xorg, or at minimum to the official ubuntu xorg package.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 682287] [NEW] Black Screen at Start

2010-11-27 Thread tarekmg
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-sis

I have an old acre aspire 3500 with sis graphic video card. When Ubuntu start
with 2.6.35.26-generic and screen resolution is 1024x768 the computer show only
black screen. However, I noticed it is in working condition because if I
blindly hit Ctrl+Alt+Delete and then press enter, the computer proceed with
normal shut down.
But if the Ubuntu start with 2.6.35.23-generic and the screen resolution is
1024x768 it works fine without the black start-up screen. Therefore, I changed
the monitor to the next available resolution which is 1024x576 and did restart
I found that the computer is working normally. I tried the recommendations in
bug 584339 and add sisfb to grub and install v86d but without any success.

Please inform what I can do to restore the screen resolution to 1024x768
without black screen at start.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 660596] Re: Black screen after installing Nvidia drivers on 10.10

2010-11-27 Thread rmenendezm
Same problem here... blank screen after installing nvidia propietary drivers.
On DELL XPX14 running GEFORCE GT420M.

I had follow all the previous indications as well as the ones from
several forums and so far I just can login into my box iff I remove the
xorg.conf file from /etc/X11/, no matter the configuration of my grub
file.

The problem is with the ubuntu nvidia drivers i can not sett up and
external monitor through HDMI (the only video output in this laptop
model)

Please help will be appreciated. I have being using ubuntu since 8.04
and with the exception of a sound issue before I was pretty happy but i
want to use my external monitor through HDMI and so far not even the
nvidia propietary drivers install :(((
