I am also affected by this problem. My version of vaio is vpcf12s1e and

after trying to remove nvidia and reinstalling, I don't even have a log

The hang ups somehow stopped. Maybe the latest kernel update or turning

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 681748] Re: Touchpad not detected at all in 'Sony VAIO F13 and F12'

2010-11-29 Thread Lukasz Olszewski
OK, so Windows identifies the touchpad as follows:
Alps Pointing-device
Alps Electric
Driver version 7.105.529.104
ACPI\SNYALP0012
PNP0F13

This is very brief so I pulled the inf file from the windows drivers
delivered by sony. It's called oem22.inf and hopefully you'll find all
the necessary information in it :) If you require anything else I'll be
glad to help!

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 41301] Re: Mouse clicks stop working sporadically

2010-11-29 Thread Gregory Bonik
My friend has this weird problem too. Mouse clicks stop working randomly
without any apparent reason, while he can still move the pointer.
Keyboard works, but Alt-Tab stops working too, so that it becomes
impossible to switch between windows. Looks like a problem with window
manager, but this happens both with metacity and compiz. If I connect to
his desktop via VNC, I cannot click anything either, Alt-Tab doesn't
work for me too. Xev doesn't show any mouse events, event mouse movement
over the window. If the mouse is re-plugged, everything starts working
again.

Using 64-bit Ubuntu 10.04 and latest (260.19.21) NVIDIA driver installed
by hand (just becuase GeForce GTX 460 isn't supported by any driver
available in Ubuntu repos). Otherwise the system is untouched.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 682621] [NEW] FTBFS new dependency on fop

2010-11-29 Thread James Page
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg-docs

xorg-docs FTBFS for natty due to the introduction of new dependencies
with are not in the main archive.

The new version of this package uses fop to generate PDF documents; this
required the following universe-main moves:

libservlet2.4-java (universe/libs)
fop (universe/text)
xml-commons-external (universe/libs)
batik (universe/misc)
ant1.7 (universe/java)
xmlgraphics-commons (universe/libs)

ant1.7 and libservlet2.4-java could be upgrade to components already in
main but for the time being PDF generation should be disabled to remove
the requirement for these new dependencies.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 636311] Re: Keyboard special keys interfere with mouse

2010-11-29 Thread Neil Green
I'm using a Microsoft Wireless Keyboard 3000 v2.0 and Microsoft Wireless
Mouse 5000. The left mouse button problem used to be present when
pressing any of the special keys on the keyboard, e.g. volume up/down,
play, pause, email, etc.

Now when I use the special keys there doesn't appear to be a problem.
I have been updating regularly using Update Manager and I don't know
which update(s) resolved the problem.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 636311] Re: Keyboard special keys interfere with mouse

2010-11-29 Thread Thomas Kluyver
Alright, it seems there's been progress. Questions:
- If it's fixed for you without adding the aubergine repository, does your
mouse jump to the top left corner of the screen the first time you use one of
the special keys after starting the computer? Several people have experienced
that with the aubergine repository.
- Is this a deliberate fix for this bug, or is it a side effect of an update
fixing another bug? Could a future update make it reappear?
- Is there a way for those of us who installed the package from the aubergine
PPA to test the standard repos? Will ppa-purge do the trick?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 636311] Re: Keyboard special keys interfere with mouse

2010-11-29 Thread Leon Nardella
I have been using the aubergine packages since they were released and
had been facing the (0,0) cursor move issue on first use ever since.

Out of curiosity, I installed ppa-purge this morning and proceeded to purge the
aubergine PPA.
Four packages were downgraded: xserver-common xserver-xephyr xserver-xorg-core
xserver-xorg-input-evdev.

The first 3 packages are built from the xorg-server source package and
the last one is built from the xserver-xorg-input-evdev source package.

 I took a look on both packages' changelog and, even though none has
been modified since even before Maverick's release date, both the
original issue of the special keys interfering with the mouse and the
(0,0) cursor move glitch are gone now!

Really not sure what fixed those issues and not sure either if they're
fixed on a fresh installation either.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 301958] Re: [needs-packaging] no working driver for sis 671/771 video cards

2010-11-29 Thread Pander
This explains the flashing lines on primary screen when using also an external
monitor:
http://www.winischhofer.net/linuxsispart1.shtml#13

Reducing resolution and/or refresh rate and/or color depth is no options
since this is already at an all time low. Perhaps refresh rate could to
the trick. Other alternative is using one output (CRT1 or CRT2) only.
But ideally this should all be taken care of automatically and/or my
primary screen should switch off when I press special function button on
my laptop.

2010-11-29 Thread Mantas Kriaučiūnas
I've packaged sis671/sis771 drivers from
http://ajoliveira.com/ajoliveira/uk/software/xorg.php with blacklist vga16fb,
postinst script for updating initramfs and xorg.conf config file into .deb
package, see attached deb file or
http://ftp.akl.lt/Linux/Baltix/Baltix-Ubuntu-packages/lucid/SIS-671-771-drivers/
Users can simply install attached deb file and reboot the computer - SIS
671/771 video chipset will work fine after reboot - I've tested this package
with Asus-K50C computer (1360x768 resolution) :)

Antonio J. de Oliveira, it seems your driver binary files at
http://ajoliveira.com/ajoliveira/uk/software/xorg.php are compiled with
debugging symbols, and they are very big compared to files from Mandriva

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 682712] [NEW] x server crashes with: [drm:i915_gem_mmap_gtt_ioctl] *ERROR* Attempting to mmap a purgeable buffer

2010-11-29 Thread Andy Whitcroft
Public bug reported:

I am getting a full X server crash and restart in combination with the
kernel error below:

[drm:i915_gem_mmap_gtt_ioctl] *ERROR* Attempting to mmap a purgeable
buffer

This occurs about once a day, and always when clicking on an entry in
the bottom task bar; compiz is enabled. Note that this is a Natty
kernel in combination with Maverick userspace.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 682722] [NEW] Win+L keystroke changes resolution AND locks screen

2010-11-29 Thread Stephen Waters
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

Description:Ubuntu 10.10
Release:10.10

xorg:
  Installed: 1:7.5+6ubuntu3
  Candidate: 1:7.5+6ubuntu3
  Version table:
 *** 1:7.5+6ubuntu3 0
500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ maverick/main amd64 Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

I have my preferences set for the Windows Key + L to lock the screen.
When I upgraded to 10.10, pressing the combination now both changes the
resolution AND locks the screen. I have no keybinding set for changing
resolutions!

1) The keybinding is shown as Mod4+L
2) This is a Dell Latitude E6500. The problem is reproducible on both the
laptop keyboard and USB keyboard. The problem is similar to what happens when
you press the Fn+F8 keybinding on the Dell keyboard to change monitor settings.
3) I am not running compiz.
4) My keyboard layout is Dvorak.
5) Keyboard is Evdev-managed.

Thank you!
Stephen

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 677700] Re: Touchpad single-click registers double-click, and sometimes two middle-clicks

2010-11-29 Thread mxyzptlk
apport information

** Description changed:

  Using Synaptics touchpad, set to use single-clicks instead of double-clicks.
  Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick, 64-bit (clean install) on a Lenovo IdeaPad Y510
  Single-clicks and tap-to-clicks register as double-clicks, and other weirdness

  Often and randomly, the left-click and sometimes the tap-to-click will
  register double-clicks instead of single-clicks. This results in
  problems like closing tabs in browsers when clicking on them. Also
  affects drags, which horribly screws up text when trying to drag a chunk
  of text from one place to another in the document. At times just moving
  the mouse across a document will result in selecting text, despite the
  fact that no double-click occurred to actually select any text, and the
  unintentionally-selected text is then dragged or copied and pasted to
  some other part of the document.

  Have also noticed that at times a single-click or tap-to-click results
  in something like two middle-clicks, or even a right-click and then the
  top-menu item. For instance, clicking on a tab in Chromium or Firefox
  doesn't simply select the tab, but instead opens two new tabs.

  This is a new problem on Maverick; it's never happened in the past, and
doesn't occur using Windows in a virtual machine. I've seen similar bug
reports, but they're old and for regular mice, not for touchpads. I'm not sure
what debugging info to offer since this is so random and doesn't result in an
actual crash.

Lukasz the bug is almost triaged now, only thing you can help us with is
test your computer with these mainline kernels(all installable as simple
.deb files). Use these mainline kernel builds and test whether your
touchpad works well in any one of them. This will be very helpful for
us.

fix it? (Any additional information might help us make the driver more robust.)

@Gursimran - This particular problem isn't related to suspend/resume -
the problem was with recognition of the touchpad at boot.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 681925] Re: Ubuntu 10.10 / Asus N43JF: X stops working after Nvidia driver install

2010-11-29 Thread Russell Lewis
On upgrade to 2.6.35-23, nvidia has stopped working for me. It was
working on 2.6.35-22. However settings configured with sudo nvidia-
settings have never persisted across reboots in 10.10.

If I blow away /etc/X11/xorg.conf and reboot, the system comes up
without nvidia drivers and mostly works (no twin view, as expected).

Hi chihpinwu, thanks for reporting this issue. I don't think there's
been a lot of testing with multi-function cards so this may have gone
untested. I'm a bit uncertain how this should be fixed - would you be
willing to suggest a patch?

Status in libpciaccess package in Ubuntu: Triaged

Bug description:
Within the function pci_device_get_bridge_buses() in file
common_bridge.c, priiv-header_type is used to detect the bridge type
without bit 7 (indicating multi-function or not) stripped. As a result
the detection would always fail for multi-function card. I see this
error in both versions 0.10.6 and 0.12.0.

Beside this problem, version 0.12.0 has a pointer check
priv-bridge.pci upon fuction entrance and just return ENODEV if it
is null. The problem is that the pointer never got initialized in the
first place and will always be null. This checking should be removed.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 301958] Re: [needs-packaging] no working driver for sis 671/771 video cards

2010-11-29 Thread gh1234
As far as I am concerned, it's the exact same.
He compiled the driver which was published by Antonio some time ago.
The nice thing is, that he made a deb package which makes installing a lot
easier + he didn't made a debug build which makes the whole driver a lot
smaller (and maybe faster but I can't say that for sure, I think that would
only be the case if you use a debugger).
So 1280x800 should work, too! Test it and report your results (maybe you should
backup your old driver).
I'll do that later, too!

Drivers in deb package are from
http://ajoliveira.com/ajoliveira/uk/software/xorg.php , I think they should
work with 1280x800 :)
I didn't tested this deb package with 1280x800, because I have only 1360x768

Also I don't know the difference with sismedia driver from Mandriva - you can
test this by yourself and tell us the difference :)

I also find that the settings do not persist between reboot.

The easy way for me to tell this is to:

1.) Set force v-sync on;

2.) Reboot

3.) Wobble a window (compiz..) and observe the tear;

4.) Load the Catalyst settings menu (admin version);

5.) Set v-sync off, click apply, then force v-sync on;

6.) Wobble a window (compiz..) and observe no tear;

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 682864] [NEW] Display freeze after VGA cable disconnected

2010-11-29 Thread Greg Grossmeier
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

I routinely disconnect the external monitor cable (VGA) from my laptop
(Lenovo x200s) to connect it to my work desktop when I need to print
things (yes, a kvm switch would be nice).

After doing that today and coming back about 4 minutes later (about) I
returned to my laptop's display (at least) frozen. Nothing would
respond. I attempted CTRL+ALT+F1 to no avail. I had to do a hard reboot.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 660273] Re: Xorg freeze

2010-11-29 Thread Stephan Müller
I think that this bug is not nouveau specific as it appears also on my
t60 laptop with a ATI Mobility Radeon X1400-128MB graphic card. This
happens mosty when the system is under heavy load. Sometimes I manage to
switch to a console with ALT+STRG+F1 and kill Xorg (with sudo pkill
Xorg). It will be restarted automatically, but the session is gone of
course. Sometimes it's even not possibly anymore to switch to a console.
Then only a hard reset helps.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 660331] Re: hp touchsmart 600-1010br no video

2010-11-29 Thread ChrisSteinbach
Here's how I got the graphics working on my HP TouchSmart 600 for Lucid
and Maverick. I'm working partly from memory, so let me know if
something doesn't work.

1) Install the latest Ubuntu (32 or 64 bit according to taste) using the
alternative install;
2) Once Ubuntu is installed you will get a black screen after you reboot;
3) Recovery mode will also give you a black screen;
4) This sucks and the nouveau display driver is to blame, we need to blacklist
it;
5) Let Ubuntu boot normally. Stare a while at the blank screen until you think
the boot process is complete;
6) Use the key combination CTRL+ALT+F3 to switch to text mode;
7) You still won't see a thing. Sorry. You'll have to work blind for a while;
8) Enter the username you chose at installation followed by the password;
9) Enter the command $ sudo su followed by your password;
10) Enter the command $ echo 'blacklist nouveau'
/etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf;
11) Enter the command $ aptitude remove xserver-xorg-video-nouveau;
12) Enter the command $ aptitude remove xserver-xorg-video-nouveau-dbg;
13) Enter the command $ reboot and boot into recovery mode;

If you're machine doesn't reboot at this point, you probably typed
something wrong. Experience tells me that the only thing to do is to
start over from step 5.

14) You should now see a text menu. Choose the option to start a command prompt
with network access (something like that);
15) Download the Nvidia driver with the command $ wget
http://us.download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86_64/256.53/NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-256.53.run;;
16) If you're not root already, switch to root using $ sudo su followed by
your password;
17) Change the system runlevel with the command $ telinit 3;
18) Install the driver with the command $ NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-256.53.run. I
remember the install giving me warnings that I igored. Ignore them;
19) The driver is installed, but your troubles aren't quite over; The driver
screws up reading the EDID file, so that needs fixing;
20) Make a copy of the EDID file with the command $ cp
/proc/acpi/video/PEG0/LCD0/EDID /etc/X11/edid.bin;
21) Backup any old xorg.conf file with the command $ cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf
/etc/X11/xorg.conf$(date +%Y%m%d%H%M)
22) Create an xorg.conf file under /etc/X11 that looks like this:

InputDeviceMouse0 CorePointer

23) Reboot and cross your fingers.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 301958] Re: [needs-packaging] no working driver for sis 671/771 video cards

2010-11-29 Thread Antonio J. de Oliveira
Hello, I have been out on another non-profit, making a conference on
advanced audio and electroacoustics, there I am a pro, not in
video...@tpurch, it seems as I told Martin in private I used some branch
of your published code on the last version with a few modifications i
did. The code used before was another branch, which was not 1366x768
compatible. If it has debug sumbols that will be on the makefile, and
quite frankly, the driver looks quite the same in terms of size...who
knows, i'm (very) familiar with dsp fixed-point assembler, kernel
drivers I didn't touched those since win32, did about 4, written in
32-bit 8086 assembler.

Coming back to the latest code, I have a few notes taken, told Martin
that I would ship the source to him and yes. He will have the code and
instructions this week, I will publish those, after I finally sit down
and look at what I did to make that totally patched code compatible with
Maverick.

No tracking records exist for that code, and everything is a mess,
that's why this has to gain access to tracked repositories. I tried to
diff those from previous versions anad was a little astonished, and evn
produced a code migrating directly from 8.10 to Maverick, but the flaws
were there.

From the results patent on-screen when starting up, there are problems
to be solved in this driver. When I picked up from the changes made
after 9.04, the driver was already an unfriendly one (Plymouth
incompatibility), so my 9.04 version, which source code I preserve,
should be the basis for any changes, but taking into account all the
others since 8.10. Fortunately I kept just about everything.

Now it is time to organize it and deliver it to who will be in charge.
What I did up to the moment was trying to avoid the worst, keeping good
people using a nice, community-maintained system. But, again, community-
maintained does not mean chaos, and so it is good that things will be
getting back on track, because there are huge quantities of these
systems around the world.

If this does not enter the current branch in xorg, I will continue to
patch, because I still have a couple of this systems around. What I
cannot do is to retrace the past work. I don't have the immediate
expertise or time to do that.

All the best

Antonio

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 660331] Re: hp touchsmart 600-1010br no video

2010-11-29 Thread Bryce Harrington
** Description changed:

- Hello, The above computer has a GeForce GT 230 video card and is x64.
- I tried installing ubuntu maverick and lucid, but they showed a distorted
initial screen(the one with only the acessibility symbol and the the keyboard
symbol) and then the screen stayed black permanently. Nothing I did changed
that, and I needed to restart the PC(I tried 6 times). I have tried even the
alternate install version, which has a working install in my PC(in text mode
thought), but using the newly installed ubuntu OS gave the same black screen.

  I´m currently unable to use ubuntu in any way, hope we can work together to
see what is happening, as being unable to use ubuntu is extremly frustrating,
the problem is not the computer itself nor the ubuntu cd(I tested).
