[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 657634] Re: [GeForce GT 330M] nvidia 260.19.06-0ubuntu1 update triggers black screen on boot for sony vaio F-series

2010-12-02 Thread Jorge Gustavo
Hi Leonardo,

Your solution is for the 256.53 drivers, right? There is no problem
with that version, as you can see in previous posts. This bug relates
with more recent versions of the NVIDIA drivers, for example, 260.19.21.

Regards!

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 649809] Re: Meerkat (10.10) does not apply theme properly

2010-12-02 Thread Henning Hoefer
Thanks for confirming that it's not a driver problem -- I took the
liberty to mark the nvidia-bug as invalid.

I also found a workaround: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1615358
With that workaround, the GDM doesn't get themed, but the desktop shows
correctly.

others like me who apply only official changes to their system, who are
precluded from upgrading to lucid by this bug.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 507148] Re: [lucid] desktop runs out of video memory on ATI Radeon Mobility 7500

2010-12-02 Thread Andy Whitcroft
@jamie -- i am unsure why the new kernel would provoke those more than
before (or are we saying it didn't work before so you could not provoke
it). But looking at the latest kernels this messasge is now officially
gone from the kernel under the commit below, the commentary there
implies this message is totally benign:

  commit a8c051f0c8d2f81c665e820f765aaddf86161640
  Author: Jean Delvare kh...@linux-fr.org
  Date:   Fri Oct 8 14:34:49 2010 +0200

drm/radeon/kms: Silent spurious error message

I see the following error message in my kernel log from time to time:
radeon :07:00.0: 88007c334000 reserve failed for wait
radeon :07:00.0: 88007c334000 reserve failed for wait

After investigation, it turns out that there's nothing to be afraid of
and everything works as intended. So remove the spurious log message.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 507148] Re: [lucid] desktop runs out of video memory on ATI Radeon Mobility 7500

2010-12-02 Thread Jamie Strandboge
@Andy -- I'm saying that using what is in official Lucid works fine for
everything except the guest session (which I never tried until comment
#94). If I run my automated tests on official Lucid, there are no
'reserve failed for wait' log messages ever. If I run my automated tests
with your kernel, there are 'reserve failed for wait' log messages, but
everything appears otherwise ok and the guest session now works. There
are more 'reserve failed for wait' log messages by far when running
glxgears than anything else.

I have tested the driver on Andy's kernel quite a bit (all with KMS/EXA -- the
default in a Lucid install):
* suspend/resume works
* compiz works
* metacity works
* switching the System/Preferences/Appearance/Visual Effects to 'None',
'Normal' and 'Extra' all work
* firefox works
* OpenOffice.org writer works
* flash works
* full screen totem totem movie works
* ~12 hours of automated tests with glxgears, totem playing a large flv file in
repeat mode, and many applications launched/closed all works as well as before

In addition, the kernel has seen real world testing on another system
(also T42 with the same radeon 7500 chipset) with firefox, flash plugin,
wine, evolution, empathy, suspend/resume, etc, for one work day. That
system did not have any of the spurious log messages (no extended use of
3D other than compiz effects). In terms of performance, the system feels
the same, but I have not performed instrumented performance tests.

I looked at the 'drm/radeon/kms: Silent spurious error message' patch
and I think it is ok to push Andy's kernel with this patch applied. I
will continue to keep Andy's current kernel on the other system for
continued real world testing and report back if there are any issues,
but I think getting the fix into lucid-proposed is a go. Once if lucid-
proposed I can retest with my automated script and get that kernel real
world testing as well.

2010-12-02 Thread NoOp
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 546578 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/546578

@David Tombs: This issue is nvidia specific to lucid. Using:
$ apt-cache policy nvidia-96
nvidia-96:
  Installed: 96.43.18-0ubuntu1
  Candidate: 96.43.18-0ubuntu1
  Version table:

 96.43.17-0ubuntu1 0
500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ lucid/restricted Packages
resolves the issue for me as noted in comment #13. Upgrading to
96.43.19-0ubuntu1 also works.

I have not modified my xorg-server (which is the package is 546578 is
filed), I have *only* changed my nvidia-96 driver to resolve the issue:

$ apt-cache policy xorg
xorg:
  Installed: 1:7.5+5ubuntu1
  Candidate: 1:7.5+5ubuntu1
  Version table:
 *** 1:7.5+5ubuntu1 0

$ apt-cache policy xserver-xorg-core
xserver-xorg-core:
  Installed: 2:1.7.6-2ubuntu7.4

100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
 2:1.7.6-2ubuntu7 0

So what specifically is your reasoning for marking this bug as a
duplicate of 546578?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 662998] Re: System freezes when running on battery

2010-12-02 Thread kFYatek
Same here. Dell Studio 1558-0005 with Mobility Radeon HD5470 and
Broadcom BCM43224 with latest drivers (Catalyst 10.11 for graphics, and
5.60.246.6 for WiFi, both from respective vendors' websites). It seems
to be something with power management - the computer always runs
perfectly fine on AC. On battery, it is OK until I start something more
power-demanding, like use an external hard drive or WiFi - then it
freezes wihin just few minutes. Every version of 2.6.35 from the repos
exhibit this behavior. I tried 2.6.36 from the kernel PPA and it's still
the same. 2.6.32-22 from Lucid runs fine.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 597895] Re: X crashes on key press

2010-12-02 Thread Jack Deslippe
I have a similar problem with the d-link boxee remote when I try to use
Boxee full screen. Whenever I press a button on the remote, X segfaults
and dies.

This is in Ubuntu 10.10 (32 bit). I get a backtrace very similar to the
one reported in the first post. Did anyone find a solution to this?

2010-12-02 Thread gene
In my case things appear to be much more stable. An the crash concerns a
current gnome session only. Since the Xorg.0.log doesn't get rewritten
the X apparently survives it. I cannot cause the crash the way the
reporter is doing either.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 441653] Re: radeon graphics mode and console does not start - xf86OpenConsole: VT_WAITACTIVE failed: Interrupted system call

2010-12-02 Thread reem.bs
This also happens to me

$ uname -r
2.6.35-23-generic
$ lspci | grep VGA
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation NV44 [GeForce 6200 LE]
(rev a1)

Exact same error in Xorg log

It might just be a crazy coincidence, but this only happens to me when
I'm using an audio player. Any audio player. Tried Amarok, Banshee and
Rhythmbox. This happens to me since I upgraded to Maverick, and so it
has happened a lot by now, but I don't recall it ever occurring when
neither of those apps were running. Music doesn't even have to be
played, which is plain weird to me cause I can't see what else is in
common and exclusive to those three apps. Video players work fine. Does
this happen to anyone else?

I also tried disabling the proprietary drivers to no avail.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 601308] Re: Add alias for ru_UA.utf8 to /usr/share/X11/locale/locale.alias

This bug produce aolso two problems:

1) in xterm (utf8 mod) cyrillic characters don't display properly;
2) in Lazarus IDE editor copy to clipboard don't work properly: this text may
not be pasted outside the IDE.

Adding alias ru_UA.utf8 - ru_UA.UTF-8 solve the problem.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 278579] Re: Dell Inspiron 1420 AlpsPS/2 ALPS Glidepoint - Poor Default Settings

2010-12-02 Thread Bryce Harrington
Hi Harvey, is this bug still affecting you?

If it is, current versions of Ubuntu have an ability to ship xorg.conf
snippets. So a way we could solve this would be to create an
xorg.conf.d snippet for your specific hardware, and a udev rule to
enable it. If you'd like to try this approach, could you identify the
exact xorg.conf (or xinput property) settings you think should be
shipped with this hardware?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 415692] Re: I cannot disable touchpad tapping because there is no option on the mouse preferences dalog and gsynaptics will not run.

2010-12-02 Thread Bryce Harrington
xinput can be used on the command line to enable or disable tapping, via
the Synaptics Tap Action property. There are also properties for
changing the speed, sensitivity, etc. See `man synaptics` and `man
xinput` for more information.

However, the bug report appears to be requesting a GUI mechanism for
adjusting these parameters, so I am reassigning this bug report to
gnome-control-center as a wishlist bug for requesting the gui dialog to
set them.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 591954] Re: Touchpad aspect ratio changes with TwinView

2010-12-02 Thread Bryce Harrington
Yep, what's going on here is that the touchpad communicates its
dimensions to the xserver, and then xserver compares that to the screen
size and scales mouse movement to correspond to the screen. Most of the
time that matches expectations, but when the aspect ratio of the screen
differs significantly from the aspect ratio of the touchpad, it can
produce weird results.

In I've coded a patch to add a way to turn off this behavior, via either
an xinput property Resolution Detect, or an xorg.conf option.

  * Add 116_resolution_detect_option.patch: Provide an option to prevent
synaptics from communicating the touchpad size to the xserver. This
can be used to solve problems where differences in touchpad and screen
dimensions cause the mouse pointer to skip pixels when moving.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 668641] Re: GNOME does not load theme after innstalling NVIDIA non-free driver

2010-12-02 Thread Brett Hoerner
Are we sure this is an nvidia issue? I would assume it's a race
condition because the SSD is so fast.

I also have this issue on an Intel X25-M. I can try Noveau but it's too
slow to use regularly, I think.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 621432] Re: Touchpad speed asymetrical (horizontal faster than vertical)

2010-12-02 Thread Bryce Harrington
Hmm, I wonder if this is another case of synaptics/xserver scaling like
in bug #327428 (which I posted a fix to natty for yesterday). Can you
refer to that bug report and see if it illuminates what's going on with
your case? That bug also shows several tools for collecting data on how
exactly the touch events are getting captured and handled, which you
could probably use to analyze your issue.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 682712] Re: x server crashes with: [drm:i915_gem_mmap_gtt_ioctl] *ERROR* Attempting to mmap a purgeable buffer

2010-12-02 Thread Bryce Harrington
Unfortunately, for these kinds of bugs the backtrace in Xorg.0.log tends
not to reveal much - just that the server was unable to communicate with
the GPU's event queue for some reason, and the server noticed graphics
data was not getting consumed. That's what the 'EQ overflowing' message
means. The backtraces don't show anything useful, they just point to
the mieqEnqueue routine where it noticed the GPU had hung.

Is anyone able to reproduce this on natty userspace + natty kernel?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 476866] Re: two-finger scrolling does not work on Dell Studio 15 (1555) via gui config

2010-12-02 Thread Bryce Harrington
Well, according to http://wiki.debian.org/SynapticsTouchpad, it says the
TouchPad: buttons: line in Xorg.0.log indicates whether or not the
device is communicating that it supports multitouch.

In this case, the original reporter's Xorg.0.log shows:

(II) SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad: buttons: left right middle

However, if it is recognized as a multitouch device it would show this:

(II) SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad: buttons: left right middle double
triple

So, this suggests to me that emulation *would* be needed.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 626974] Re: ABI change in xorg 1.9 breaks legacy nvidia-96 drivers in Maverick

2010-12-02 Thread Sebastiano
Well, I did it. Browsing a bit through NVIDIA forums, I discovered that I was
missing the correct ModulePath in xorg.conf to load libglx of Nvidia, not
X.org's one.
Anyway, I'm a bit curious because jockey did create the X.org configuration
file for me, and that line was not added.
Is jockey in fault, or on a default system Nvidia glx module will have priority
over others?

For the ones who just want to know, in case, how I solved:
in xorg.conf, in section Files, be sure that the first module path is Nvidia
one

Section Files
ModulePath   /usr/lib/nvidia-96/xorg/
ModulePath   /usr/lib/xorg/modules
.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 684474] [NEW] Screen becomes black for few seconds.

2010-12-02 Thread Moto Toshi
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

For a time, occasionally I'd experienced black screen (that appears and
few seconds later disappears on it's own). With recent updates this is
no more occasional, it's now REALLY frequent. Can happen twice or thrice
in a row, never lasts more than few seconds, up to 4 tops. Most
frequently with Firefox or Opera enabled, but happens also after both
are shut down. Will update the bug whenever I'll find something new.

Kinda like a screensaver, turns black then turns back to whatever I was
doing (with key pressed or mouse move or on it's own).

As per the bug description, the bug is capable of multitouch. I can

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 476866] Re: two-finger scrolling does not work on Dell Studio 15 (1555) via gui config

2010-12-02 Thread Bryce Harrington
I'm not certain how to prove or disprove (a). I looked through all the
files attached to this bug report but didn't find anything definitive.
I poked around on my own hardware looking at lshal output, various files
under /sys/class/input but didn't find something I could suggest
checking. Presumably you can check your hardware vendor's data sheets.

Regarding (b), try running this command:

  synclient -m 100

In theory, the fifth column 'f' is the number of fingers seen by the
touchpad. Try two fingers, and more, and see if the number changes.

Perhaps this bug is merely a dupe of 308191?

Try testing the ppa:utouch-team/utouch ppa, which I believe has an
updated kernel driver and X bits, and see if that allows MT behavior
with this. If so, we can just dupe this bug to 308191.

 Bryce, do you know if gnome-session keeps any logs?

Aside from ~/.xsession-errors and /var/log/gdm/ I don't know of anything
in gnome worth looking at for this bug.

 As far as what gdm is telling I see this:
 Fatal server error:
 Server is already active for display 0
 If this server is no longer running, remove /tmp/.X0-lock
 and start again.

 which apparently is not related to the issue in question or dis it?

No, just means you tried starting X but it looked like there was another
X session already running. Probably best to just reboot at that point.

 The other more recent gdm log has these:
 (WW) intel(0): i830_uxa_prepare_access: bo map failed
 ../../intel/intel_bufmgr_gem.c:941: Error preparing buffer map 598 (pixmap):
 Invalid argument

Interesting, yes that does sort of sound relevant.

I notice that the section of code that produces this warning has changed
significantly between maverick 2.9.0 and 2.9.1:

// maverick 2.9.0
   /* Kernel manages fences at GTT map/fault time */
if (i830-kernel_exec_fencing) {

}

// natty:

intel_batch_submit(scrn, FALSE);

if (priv-tiling || bo-size = intel-max_gtt_map_size)
ret = drm_intel_gem_bo_map_gtt(bo);
else
ret = dri_bo_map(bo, access == UXA_ACCESS_RW);

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 476866] Re: two-finger scrolling does not work on Dell Studio 15 (1555) via gui config

2010-12-02 Thread Ricco
@Brice : indeed, bug #308191 contains an attached dkms synaptics package
which enables multitouch on some synaptics devices.

I think it is a much better solution, so you could call this bug #476866
a duplicate, I guess ?

Thanks for pointing to the other bug !

@Henrik : works on my Dell Studio 1747, thanks !

However ,the two fingers need to be somewhat apart for it to work, while
they could be joined when using two-finger emulation. I could get used
to it but it feels quite annoying. Anyone else noticed this ?

Ok, after trawling through git changelogs, here are four commits that
seem relevant in the transition of that section of code from maverick to
natty:

http://cgit.freedesktop.org/xorg/driver/xf86-video-
intel/commit/?id=501e78b0095b00a635dc1dc182fc132f14f08f22

intel/commit/?id=6be26cae8379f973d9ca27e0d5371d16618e4f7b

Unfortunately these don't link to bug #'s that would indicate that these
are fixes for an issue like this one.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 684503] [NEW] GUI becomes partially unresponsive

2010-12-02 Thread Dan Krejsa
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

Starting today, on my updated-today ubuntu 10.04 system, the gnome GUI becomes
partially unresponsive after an uncertain amount of activity. After the problem
occurs,

- I cannot move windows or close them by clicking in the window manager
decorations (title bar area, X button).
- I can switch between workspaces using the Ctrl-Alt-Left and Ctrl-Alt-Right
keyboard shortcuts.
- I can create a new window terminal or close an existing window using keyboard
shortcuts. I can
  type and enter commands in the current window.
- I cannot switch between windows using Alt-Tab.
- The mouse moves but most buttons, etc., in the GUI don't work. The mouse
scroll wheel does
   however scroll the current gnome-terminal window.

The laptop is a Sony VAIO VGN-Z, which has a kind of wierd dual (Intel or
Nvidia) graphics
devices, but I've been using the lucid lynx for some time haven't noticed the
problem until
today.

I first noticed the problem when doing some work in a proprietary eclipse-based
development environment. I don't yet know how to reliably reproduce the problem.
As soon as I find a way I'll definitely report it.

A workaround is to kill gnome-session, log in again, and hope the problem
doesn't
occur soon.

/var/log/apt/history.log contains the following updates that I did
today:

Commit 49d2ccab2a8 looks most interesting - if you want to try patching
the -intel driver, I'd probably suggest starting with that.

I have attempted to build the newer -intel against maverick but it
didn't build cleanly. Would you guys consider that to be an adequate
fix?

We're hoping to get the bits from that ppa into natty, but it depends on
us getting the new X input stack from xserver 1.10 which is not 100%
certain at this point.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 379313] Re: Handling NextWindow Touchscreen (multitouch)

2010-12-02 Thread Bryce Harrington
Thanks Chase. It sounds like support on the open source has some
blockers, so for this bug report let's focus on the nwfermi driver.

@djp, thanks for posting the .debs. It appears this contains a GPL'd
kernel driver installable via dkms, and a closed binary nwfermi_daemon
which is invoked using udev. Can you specify what the distribution
terms are for nwfermi_daemon? Is it permissible for us to package and
ship it in Ubuntu as a closed source driver?

Because this driver does not depend on anything particular on the X
side, I guess xserver-xorg-input-evdev is not the best component for it
to be filed against, but I'm not certain of what package would be better
(linux?) so will leave it here for now.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 379313] Re: Handling NextWindow Touchscreen (multitouch)

2010-12-02 Thread Bryce Harrington
djp, you mentioned earlier an interest in posting this to a PPA. Do you
need help with this? Do you have a plan in place for how you want to be
distributing it to go into the PPA?

I think once that is sorted out, it would make it straightforward for us
to even consider incorporating this into multiverse with other closed
source drivers, which would make it even easier for Ubuntu users to
install it. I'm not sure what the process is for getting additional
closed source drivers accepted there, so that may or may not be
feasible, but once it's packaged for PPA I'd be willing to investigate
for you, if you'd like.

http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/opensource/library/os-touchpad/?ca=dgr-lnxw02os-touchpadS_TACT=105AGX59S_CMP=GRsitel

  I've tried to run this:
  synclient -m 100

  but it seems that recognize only a single finger.

  This touchpad has multi-touch feature since i correctly make it running
  under windows xp, but I like to be able to use it under Linux too.

  I'm running last updated Intrepid Ubuntu.

  Also affecting last updated Karmic (k)ubuntu.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 308191] Re: Multitouch support not available for Synaptics touchpads v7.2

2010-12-02 Thread carmaxx
It works on my Lenovo U450p on 10.10, thanks a million!

However, the scrolling is somewhat inaccurate while it wasn't so with
the latest touchpad driver on Windows or with the script under Ubuntu
10.10 that I used so far. The scrolling sometimes seems to 'jump' back
in the opposite direction.
