The problem still remains! It makes working with emacs nearly impossible
(see attachment -- the status bar is totally scrambled).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 318325] Re: [X1100] flickering after resume from ram

2010-12-08 Thread Tommy Trussell
New install of Maverick UNE to a new (to me) Acer Aspire 5100-3949. Ran
into this bug, and going through the workarounds. So far the only
workaround that works is the one in Bug #576181 (keep the processor
busy with a bash script). Yuck. Especially if you're on battery.

Just tried the Ubuntu-X PPA at
https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat/+archive/x-updates
No improvement.

Will next try the Xorg Crack PPA https://launchpad.net/~xorg-edgers
I will report back IF it fixes this.

P.S.: I installed UNE, and Unity doesn't work at all on this beast, so
I'm logging in using GNOME. In Unity the desktop is blank, and the
widgets flash blank rectangles when I mouse over but they are
unreadable. I found the power widget in the top-right corner so I could
make the menu come up to get it logged out. Related problem? When I get
a chance I will file a Unity bug.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 687325] Re: iMac 20 2007 dpkg-reconfigure xserver-org does nothing

2010-12-08 Thread Daniel Faulkner
I believe there is a typo in your description and title and you mean
xserver-xorg (as xserver-org doesn't exist in ubuntu).
Regarding the lack of configuration options I believe this was done on purpose
as the newer xserver's auto-detect the hardware when you start the xserver. If
you need to change the settings you may find you now have to edit the file
/etc/X11/xorg.conf with the settings you need. If you have made some changes to
your computer that has caused xorg to stop working and there is a xorg.conf
file present first try renaming the file so the xserver starts with the default
automatically detected settings.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 658379] Re: Maverick AMD64 Theme settings not recalled

2010-12-08 Thread Paul H
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 500417 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/500417

I am seeing this too. New, completely fresh install to a new machine.
Ubuntu 10.10/Maverick amd64 on Intel Core i7 with nVidia Quadro FX
2800M. All looks fine until I install the nVidia drivers. If I use the
173 version or the version current this still happens. I also tried
the latest driver from nVidia site: 260.1921 and it still happens.

After using any of the three nVidia drivers and restarting, when I log
into my account, the top panel (where Applications, Places, etc is) and
all the icons in it (network connection, volume, etc) are from an old
looking theme. When I launch an application, the buttons and controls in
it also look very old. When I select System, Preferences, Appearance and
select a different theme, such as Ambiance, it sort of works on open
windows, but doesn't do anything to the top panel and top panel icons,
and when I close it and re-open it, the theme I selected is no longer
selected. It won't stick. Logging out and back in or fully rebooting
reverts everything back to the very old theme.

I tried running sudo gnome-appearance-properties in a terminal window,
and when I make my selections from there, the top panel and icons
change. I thought that I was all set with this workaround until I
rebooted and ended up back with the very old theme.

I read through bug #500417 and I don't think that this is a duplicate of
that one.

It seems to me that something which occurs as a result of the
installation of the nVidia drivers (regardless of the version of those
drivers) is breaking theme selection/saving. Is this perhaps only a
64-bit issue?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 687413] [NEW] Screen flicking with dual monitors in netbook remix on eeePC

2010-12-08 Thread Timothy Rittman
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xrandr

When I plug in a VGA cable to my EEE PC (1000HA - dual boot windows xp,
ubuntu netbook remix) I have problems as outlined below. I've tried it
on two monitors, one with partial success:

1. plugged in to 1680x1050 flatscreen monitor. Display appears with a
resolution of 800x600. Changing the resolution through the monitor
settings application results in both laptop and external screen
flickering at about 2-3Hz and being unable to be read. I tried changing
the resolution with xrandr (xrandr --output VGA1 --auto) which overlaid
the laptop screen on to the external monitor. Trying to separate them
(xrandr --output VGA1 --left-of LVDS1 caused the same appearance as
above.

2. VGA connection to (I think 800x600) projector. Both screen flicker as
above at about 2-3Hz. As I was about to give a presentation I didn't
have time to play around with it, but switched to my back up plan (USB
on windows!).

Let me know if any logs/outputs would be useful.

Tim Rittman

I also have this issue. Same as reported in bug report.

Bug did not exist in 10.04, and possibly not on the original release of
10.10.

I have seen fglrx handle this correctly, so if we want to optimize for
the most people getting a text-free boot, we may want to make that
determination on a driver-by-driver basis.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 687466] [NEW] dock icons disappearing on reopen (all programs)

2010-12-08 Thread Andre Inglis
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

Here are the exact steps I take to cause the problem:

1. Open any program. I'll use the Calculator program for this example.
2. Right click the Calculator icon on the dock and select Pin To Launcher
3. Right click the Calculator icon on the dock and select Quit. (The
Calculator program quits and the Calculator icon is still pinned to the dock as
expected)
4. Right click the Calculator icon on the dock and select Pin To Launcher
(The Calculator icon on the dock disappears as expected)
5. Open the Calculator program.

The icon will not appear in the dock as expected. The Calculator program
will however open as expected.

This happens with all of the programs I've tested.

And not even driver-by-driver basis, more like by graphics card basis.
For me (with Nvidia 285 GTX) nvidia-current has always worked OK.
Now I am using the latest beta from X-Updates (X-Swat): 260.19.26-0ubuntu1

And yes, I use the line gfxpayload=keep in my /etc/grub.d/00_header
resulting a pretty plymouth.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 687494] [NEW] application window opens behind other windows

2010-12-08 Thread Andre Inglis
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

Here are the exact steps I take for the bug to appear:

1. Open Firefox (or any other program that takes up about 3/4 of the screen)
2. Click on the Firefox window (you need to do this for the bug to happen)
3. Click the Ubuntu icon in the upper left hand side of the screen to open the
Applications Window

The Applications window appears behind the Firefox window. I expect the
Applications window to appear on top of it.

** Description changed:

- It looks like arecord goes into an infinite loop. I'm not sure what
- triggers this, but I will keep trying to figure it out and add
- information to this bug report as I get it. Attached is the crash dump
- from gdb, I've gzip'd it as it's rather large (17MB) uncompressed.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 676413] Re: Video playback performance drops substantially after suspend/wake cycle (Lenovo X201 i5 w/ Intel GMA HD)

2010-12-08 Thread Chun-Yu
This is a xorg-video-intel specific issue — the problem others are
seeing with NVIDIA drivers may be similar, but they are probably not the
same. The Intel driver guys know about this problem (see http://www
.mail-archive.com/intel-...@lists.freedesktop.org/msg01932.html ),
although I haven't heard anything about a fix yet. I have the same
problem on my ThinkPad X201 (i5) in both Ubuntu 10.10 and Gentoo.
Perhaps we should file a bug at
http://intellinuxgraphics.org/feedback.html to track the issue upstream?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 656044] Re: Version 195.36.24-0ubuntu1~10.04 incompatible with kernel 2.6.32-25.

2010-12-08 Thread Kevin Krumwiede
Figured this out. When DKMS complains that the kernel source is not
installed, what it really means is that the kernel iheaders/i are
not installed. Install kernel-headers-`uname -r` and run dpkg-
reconfigure nvidia-current.

Andre, thanks for testing natty and providing a good set of steps to
reproduce the issue. Could you explain why you think it is a bug in X?
From your description it sounds like something's wrong with your dock.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 687553] [NEW] Ubuntu freezes when Hyper Threading is enabled in BIOS

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 133060] Re: Synaptic touchpad fails to register some of the taps for tap-to-click

2010-12-08 Thread Bryce Harrington
   * Add quirk for Dell Inspiron 6400 to register taps more reliably.
The touchpad hardware occasionally sends invalid (1, 5855) coords
for taps, which the driver then interprets as a corner tap, which
by default get ignored. Instead of ignoring them, we treat them
 as left-button clicks.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 687494] Re: application window opens behind other windows

2010-12-08 Thread Bryce Harrington
Ok no prob. I think maybe it is a unity issue. See if you can reproduce
it with the classic desktop, with desktop effects turned on.

Also, is it just the Applications window that shows this behavior, or is
it similar for any popup dialog that should overlay another window?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 687466] Re: dock icons disappearing on reopen (all programs)

2010-12-08 Thread Bryce Harrington
Okay, I'm not sure what the package name is for the dock you're
referring to, but from your description it sounds like you're running
unity, so I'm reassigning the package there for diagnosis. It sounds
sort of like a misbehavior in the window system functionality.

Regarding figuring out packages to file things against, yeah it's hard
to determine for bugs like this. There's a page at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage that can help, but it
seems to be a bit out of date. So probably best way to learn is keep
filing bugs like you're doing. :-)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 687494] Re: application window opens behind other windows

2010-12-08 Thread Andre Inglis
I tried this on two different laptops (Samsung and HP) on the livecd and
both have the same bug. I did a full install on my Samsung and the bug
was still there, but I did not get a chance to try the classic desktop.
After a reset the laptop booted into a purple screen and froze.
Subsequent resets did not alleviate the problem.

Also, I was not able to activate the effects in the 'Change Background'
menu. Whenever I tried to do this on the livecd the effects
automatically turned off (or at least the indicator in 'change
background' showed them as turned off) on both laptops. No error message
showing. Possible bug?

I attempted to reproduce this bug with other applications but they
worked fine. Only the 'applications' window seems to do it.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 687494] Re: application window opens behind other windows

2010-12-08 Thread Bryce Harrington
Okay, thanks for the additional testing. It's sounding more like a
unity bug, if it can only be reproduced with the Applications menu.
I'll refile this to unity.

For the other issues you ran into, the purple screen + freeze sounds
like a kernel drm bug. That class of bug tends to be very hard to
diagnose, unless apport is able to automatically catch it. There are
various workarounds depending on your hardware, but I'd suggest raising
the issue on http://askubuntu.com for that.

The trouble activating effects could be a compiz bug, but I'm not sure.
There are established procedures for diagnosing that class of problem.
If you want to chase that bug, I'd recommend opening a bug report
against compiz if you want to investigate that.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 670016] Re: Xorg crashes when performing gesture

2010-12-08 Thread Chase Douglas
Bug 687662 is preventing me from getting the xorg-server source package
uploaded to the ppa :(. I've been told it should be fixed in a day or
two, when I will retry the upload. Until then, industrious users could
try building from the source branch I've linked to this bug :).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 634683] Re: [gm45] Running piglit/occlusion-query-discard locks GPU

2010-12-08 Thread Chris Halse Rogers
The symptoms here are extremely generic - there are a vast variety of
driver bugs that can produce the same log messages.

This particular driver bug has been fixed; if you're still seeing
something with similar symptoms then you're seeing a different bug (and
should probably file a new bug, or try disabling some effects in an
attempt to not trigger the bug you're hitting).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 287428] Re: Menu key emits XF86WakeUp on Thinkpad X61s

2010-12-08 Thread Paul Sladen
It's not really a bug. Fn /is/ the wakeup key when the machine is
suspended. If anyone wants to map it to other functions, then that's
okay, but being able to do that is not universal... Fn on ThinkPads
and LenovoPads is a magical/special key. If only generates its own code
if not combined with any of the other magic (blue highlighted) key
combinations and that is more of a fluke than anything.
