Can you explain in more detail how you got this error? Were you installing onto a USB drive? I also have an evergreen ati card, and I was able to get fglrx installed on it without this error. I also got unity installed and booted okay, although I had some problems with the docker. So you should give more details about what you did to get this error. On this Acer Aspire 5100 I just tried the following: -- disabled KMS using # echo options radeon modeset=0 /etc/modprobe.d/radeon-kms.conf but disabling KMS had no noticeable effect on flicker. -- tried vesa driver by creating an xorg.conf The vesa driver came up in low resolution, AND the machine flickered after suspend. -- tried fbdev driver by creating an xorg.conf The fbdev driver didn't work with X at all; X wouldn't start. All of the above was tested using the stock Maverick 10.10 xorg, NOT the newer PPAs. When I get a chance I may try the Xorg Crack PPA. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 684503] Re: GUI becomes partially unresponsive
I have the exact same problem on 10.04 after performing the latest update-manager update. The problem is that desktop becomes unresponsive. Clicking on a window does not change focus to that window. Window manager buttons do not respond. Not possible to move windows around. Button widgets in applications do not respond to clicks. Not possible to ALT+TAB or to focus on the GNOME panel. The problem occurs with or without Compiz enabled. So not Compiz- specific. Using Synaptic's history, I managed to track down the updated packages (attached). Unfortunately none of them look like specifically X related updates. My current theory is that it might be Firefox related, interacting with something else I am running. ** Attachment added: upgrades.txt https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-intel/+bug/684503/+attachment/1763644/+files/upgrades.txt -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-intel in ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/684503 Title: GUI becomes partially unresponsive ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 312756] Re: MASTER: support graphics card hot switch
I submit DSDT again, as a BIOS update have changed them. Interesting for the curious is that there are changes in graphic sections. In both cases, it seems that discrete ATI is turned off if the computer detects that OS is not Win7. In fact, there are no ATI drivers for XP in HP support, only for Win7. F16 and F23 in file names are the past and present BIOS versions. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 308191] Re: Multitouch support not available for Synaptics touchpads v7.2
deb package builds ok with 2.6.35-24 kernel. Package performs very well on two finger scrolling, with only some problems when the two fingers are very close (Same problem but worse in a Win7 install that I did only for test win. synaptic driver). Main problem is that it lacks detection of click zone of clickpads, so click+move or right click are impossible. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 542660] Re: New Apple iMac (Core i5) fails to display anything

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 684503] Re: GUI becomes partially unresponsive
I think I have this same bug. I originally suspected that it had something to do with chrome, since it always seemed to occur when I was browsing the net, but after reading your report, I now think the more likely candidate is eclipse, since I've always had eclipse open when the bug occurs. Perhaps the bug is caused by switching back and forth between workspaces using Ctrl-Alt-Left and Ctrl-Alt-Right (something I do often)? I suspect eclipse + switching workspaces may be occasionally breaking whatever handles window focus. I have reproduced this bug on two machines, both of which were using eclipse at the time. I can usually fix the problem by closing chrome (and any other programs, except for eclipse) using Alt-F4, but I'm not sure if that always works.
