[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 571638] Re: Keyboard does not work when touchpad disable button pressed

2010-12-31 Thread Christian Göbel
I finally got my hands on a computer that could boot with Ubuntu 9.04 (the last
version of Ubuntu where this problem did not appear).
In Ubuntu 9.04 (gnome 2.26.1) the following entry does NOT exist in gnome
settings:
/apps/gnome_settings_daemon/keybindings/touchpad

Since setting this entry to empty solves the problems the issue seems to be
related to the introduction of the key in recent versions of Ubuntu.
The following comment on a related bug provides a possible explanation:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-input-synaptics/+bug/549727/comments/103

In short, the author suspects that gnome_settings_deamon and the
synaptics driver both try to activate and deactivate the touchpad and
one of them fails, which is suffienct to lead to the reported issue.

If you delete the corresponding key in gnome settings then everything
works fine again, since the synaptics driver takes care of this (as has
been the case prior to Ubuntu 9.10).

Now, is this a gnome_settings bug?
Who should take care of switching touchpad on/off? Gnome? The synaptics driver?

I am willing to open a bug upstream if a knowledgeable developer could
provide some indication who should fix the bug.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 695976] [NEW] Cannot set up dual screens with "extended desktop"

2010-12-31 Thread phill
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

Using 10.10, I cannot "extend my desktop to a second monitor" (in
windows speak) I used to be able to do this with 10.04!

Start Monitor Preferences from System->Preferences->Monitors
Uncheck "Same image in all monitors"
Click Apply, or Click Make Defualt
A Dialouge box pops up stating "Please log out and log back in again"
Click ok on the Dialoge box
Log off and then back in and both monitors still have the same image.
Repeating the steps again does not rectify the problem.
Restarting does not make any difference.

I've reinstalled Ubuntu using the Ubuntu 10.04.1 live-cd (32-bit) and
then upgraded to Ubuntu 10.10. I'm using Ubuntu 10.10 with nouveau on my
nvidia ion hardware right now. The bug seems to be somewhere else in the
live-cd, e.g. casper. Therefore I propose to divide my problem from the
problem of Martin O'Mahony.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 588601] Re: I am getting fed up with Ubuntu releases

2010-12-31 Thread ElPasmo
Thank you for taking the time to report this. Unfortunately, we cannot
work on this bug because your description didn't include enough
information. You may find it helpful to read "How to report bugs
effectively" http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd
be grateful if you would then provide a more complete description of the
problem.

We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures

When reporting bugs in the future please use apport by using 'ubuntu-
bug' and the name of the package affected. You can learn more about this
functionality at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReportingBugs.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 696050] [NEW] unable to click on power menu

2010-12-31 Thread randall
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

I have had this problem off and on since installing this version of
Ubuntu. It happens on multiple computers. all have amd processors,
chipsets, and graphics (have had this problem with amd radeon 5770 and
5850 as well).

The power menu in the upper right hand corner gets covered by a repeat
of the user name image and becomes unclickable. i have to click on the
user menu and carefully mouse over to where the power menu is to access
the menu.

2010-12-31 Thread Mike L
Try upgrading to the experimental version of the driver. You can find it
at Debian's website. OpenGL is slow, but at least works unlike the
current version, and the console isn't jumbled. Go to
and download the latest DEB by clicking on your architecture and
then the closest mirror for the download.

Oops. Forgot to mention to click "xserver-xorg-video-savage" first, then
your architecture, and then select a mirror.

2010-12-31 Thread TF

I was able to get the cursor to show after suspend and optionally eliminate
screen graphics tearing on my gateway lt3103u running 10.04 in this manner:

save your work as this will restart X and close all windows, use with
caution or you can screw up your X display

ctl alt f6

-start a root shell

sudo bash

service gdm stop

Xorg -configure

note where xorg.conf.new is generated in the information listed

service gdm start

-back to a root shell

sudo bash

cp /xorg.conf.new /etc/X11/xorg.conf

gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Add the appropriate Option in the section below:

Example:
Section "Device"
#text cut for brevity.
Identifier "Card0"
Driver "radeon"
VendorName "ATI Technologies Inc"
BoardName "RS690M [Radeon X1200 Series]"
BusID "PCI:1:5:0"

#Option: You may not need this one if your graphics are fine:
#This eliminates graphics tearing and jumbling on my gateway lt3103u
Option "RenderAccel" "False"

#Option: This allows the cursor to show after suspend
Option "SWcursor" "True"
EndSection

restart computer

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 635362] Re: Xorg assert failure: X: /usr/include/xorg/privates.h:122: dixGetPrivateAddr: Assertion `key->initialized' failed.

2010-12-31 Thread Mike L
The current savage driver has problems rendering any OpenGL application.
The experimental one, which can be found as a DEB off of Debian's
website, sort of fixes the problem. It can be found at
. The
problem that Daniel is having is relating to OpenGL attempting to
initialise itself with Gnome's screensaver, and failing due to bugs in
the Savage driver. This causes X to crash, and X restarts, logging the
user off. This happens with other OpenGL applications as well, such as
OpenGL accelerated video in VLC or Gnome MPlayer, ZSnes with OpenGL
enabled, Neverball, and other multimedia applications/games. By
downloading the experimental version off of Debian's website, the
crashes will stop. This, however, leads to another problem: OpenGL is
painfully slow even in simple applications with the newer savage driver.
But at least it works. And it seems the I will get funky colours if I
use hardware accelerated X11 on an application such as Snes9x, even with
the new driver. I hope somebody knows what/how to fix this driver. Help
is appreciated, as this bug has many duplicates, so it must be having a
negative impact in many other places as well.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 642579] Re: Xubuntu 10.10 doesn't launch neither from LiveCD nor after installation

2010-12-31 Thread Nik
Happy New Year!

I can either add, that ubuntu server 10.10 launches successfully, but the black
screen appears after intallation of xubuntu-desktop.
I can't try out anithing right now ( i'm on hollyday), but if you have any
questions - i'll be glad to try to answers them by memory.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 694664] [NEW] Resize of divider window causes X to crash

2010-12-31 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Binary package hint: bzr

This is reproducible.

This is actually caused when using Bazaar Explorer, so i'm not sure if
the package should be updated or not. (this is what ubuntu-bug picked
when I chose the pid.)

When I click the commit button, the commit dialog pops up with the
"Message" text box at the top and the changed files at the bottom.

There is a divider separating the two. When I try to resize the the two
panes by dragging the divider, the screen goes black and I am presented
with the login screen.

I have done this twice, to prove that this was in fact the cause.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 463735] Re: Ubuntu Karmic Regression: No Multi-Touch Touchpad Functionality on Asus Eee PC 1000HA

2010-12-31 Thread pauljohn32
I have fought with this and now can tell you the once and for all fix.
You can't fix this with GUI menus and such, but this is a definite, lead
pipe guaranteed fix if you are willing to do some file editing.

1. As in https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/463735/comments/11,
fiddle with synclient to find out what changes you like. (synclient -l
to display, synclient VAR=setting to set).

2. Write those settings into the file
/usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/50-synaptics.conf

For example, here are my settings.

Section "InputClass"
Identifier "touchpad catchall"
Driver "synaptics"
MatchIsTouchpad "on"
MatchDevicePath "/dev/input/event*"
Option "SHMConfig" "on"
Option "JumpyCursorThreshold" "150"
Option "VertEdgeScroll" "1"
Option "EmulateTwoFingerMinW" "5"
Option "EmulateTwoFingerMinZ" "40"
Option "VertTwoFingerScroll" "1"
Option "HorizTwoFingerScroll" "1"
Option "VertScrollDelta" "100"
Option "HorizScrollDelta" "100"
Option "CircScrollTrigger" "3"
Option "MinSpeed" "0.3"
Option "MaxSpeed" "0.6"
EndSection

3. Prevent your desktop from changing those settings. XFCE leaves
those settings alone, that was how I first figured out they work.

BUT gnome will not leave them alone. Gnome tries to re-set the way it
thinks you want, and this work is done by gnome-settings-daemon. It
will try to put back in whatever settings youget when you do the menu
System/Personal/Mouse to config the touchpad. We need to prevent that
from overriding the settings in the synaptics.conf file.

Run "gconf-editor" and navigate to
/apps/gnome_settings_daemon/plugins/mouse and UNCHECK active.

Log out, log in. Voila. Long standing problem solved. Whew. I searched
for this fix for a months.

If you run KDE, I don't know what you have to do to fix this.

Oh, there is one other change I made, but I think it ends up being
irrelevant.

Many people are plagued by this hassle, and they have many descriptions
of it. Some think it is a flaw in the Xserver, others see it as a
configuration of the startup process, some see it as a mouse configuator
problem. Some people noticed that in the X log, it sometimes appears as
if the touchpad driver is loaded twice, and people were guessing that
was causing the problem that settings in 50-synaptics.conf were ignored.
Some people suggested commenting out lines in the file:

/usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-evdev.conf

They say do this:

#Section "InputClass"
#Identifier "evdev touchpad catchall"
#MatchIsTouchpad "on"
#MatchDevicePath "/dev/input/event*"
#Driver "evdev"
#EndSection

I did it, and forgot about it. It had no effect as far as I could see.
I've been studying the X startup files and I don't see any benefit from
this. But it is still that way in my system.

I hope this helps you fix yours :)

PJ

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 308191] Re: Multitouch support not available for Synaptics touchpads v7.2

2010-12-31 Thread pauljohn32
I have wrestled with this lots, and the problem is that no two people
describe it as the same problem.

For some people, the mouse/touchpad driver or module is just wrong. I
believe they are the minority.

The majority are people who have working devices, but can't figure how
to configure them and the point-and-click tools that keep getting thrown
about just make it worse.

If you can make settings work in the terminal with synclient, I wrote
down how you can make those fixes permanent.

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-input-
synaptics/+bug/463735/comments/14

For Gnome users, the magic bullet is to stop using the mouse configure
menu, turn off gnome-settings-daemon's control of your touchpad, and let
X settings get it just right.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 696122] [NEW] Screen Flicker on Intel 915 Video adapter.

2010-12-31 Thread rignes
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

>From what I've read this has been a lingering issue since somewhere
around the 9.xx release. I just wanted to let you all know I still see
this in 10.04 and 10.10. The screen will flicker severely after about a
day of use and resolves for most of the day. I've noticed that the
keyboard will not respond as well during flickers and letters go missing
when flickers happen mid typing.

This is the first bug I've submitted so I hope I've included enough
info.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 635523] Re: Xephyr crashed with SIGSEGV

2010-12-31 Thread Michael Stone
The segfault occurs because Xephyr's attempt to bgfill its client-facing
root window writes past the end of the window's image data buffer.

The write fails because Xephyr's hostx_screen_init() function is
requesting an image data buffer which is too small.

The image data buffer is too small because the calculation of
bytes_per_line conflicts with the calculation of the screen's bits-per-
pixel.

Finally, Ajax supplied a patch six months ago that, when rebased, fixes
the problem:
