[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 542660] Re: New Apple iMac (Core i5) fails to display anything

2011-01-04 Thread pelle.k
This is still an issue. I tried (kubuntu) natty-desktop-amd64+mac.iso from
2011-01-03 on a 27 inch iMac with Radeon 4850 (iMac11,1). Unfortunately, i have
no external LCD, so i can't help you with the output of /sys/class/drm/card0.
However, i did boot the livecd with vesa graphics, and this is the contents of
/sys/class/drm/card0 after loading the radeon driver manually (dmidecode
attached above);

r...@ubuntu:/sys/class/drm/card0# ls

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 687738] Re: nvidia driver seems to have sync to vblank issue

2011-01-04 Thread Didier Roche
Bryce, yes, it's still the case. The effect is still really random and
we will have to wait a little (sometimes even not without touching the
keyboard). My device is a 17' laptop but I can bring it during the
sprint.

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: compiz

While alt-tabbing with compiz (latest version,
  1:0.9.2.1+glibmainloop3-0ubuntu4), i got this crasher.

I've noticed crashers like this for a while since i switched over to
natty, but most of the time i was getting traces that were mostly stack
  smashers according to smspillaz.

Withi this one, i think i've put the finger on a more probable cause for
the crasher. See stacktrace at http://pastebin.ubuntu.com/544957/ an

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 643895] Re: nvidia propietary driver fails to load X with geforce 310M

2011-01-04 Thread Vinicius P. Tinoco
I'm also having that same problem.

In boot, the Kubuntu logo displayed, after the screen is blank.

In Xorg.0.log indicates that in this connected to the DFP-0 through the
LVDS link, with information passed through the edid file, declared in
xorg.conf, but there is no output even in the VGA connector.

Thanks !

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 313514] Re: MASTER: evdev driver ignores keycodes 255

2011-01-04 Thread Marco Chiappero
First of all I own a Logitech LX710 desktop kit, one single USB receiver
for both keyboard and mouse. You can have a look at the keyboard here
http://launchpadlibrarian.net/21698239/lx710.jpg and see what I mean for
extra/multimedia keys: on the left there is some image editing stuff, on
the left some music stuff, a few customizable shortcuts
(Fn+F9/F10/F11/F12) and some predefined ones (Word, Excel, Calendar,
Calculator, and so on), a few more like Search, Mail, VoIP (as you can
see no zoom slider, sorry). I just love the side keys (I wish I had them
on my laptop too), but unfortunately many of them didn't work out of the
box (all the left ones, the shuffle key, and some others). That's
because they are correctly mapped by the kernel (using the right
definitions in input.h) from scancodes (the way the hardware notifies a
key pressure) to keycode numbers above the 255 value (you can verify
this using showkey). So no chance to see them shown up by xev (note that
X reads kernel keycodes - from 1 to 255 - and maps them to different
keycodes and finally maps them to keysym). So, it is necessary to change
the scancode - keycode mapping at kernel level for all those dead
keys, choosing from the ones not already assigned in the range 127-247
(have a look at input.h for keycode definitions and use showkey to avoid
collisions). This can be accomplished using udev-extra (read
/usr/share/doc/udev/README.keymap.txt for help), following two steps:

1) you have to define all the remappings that you need (in the form of
scancode keycode list) and place them in a file under
/lib/udev/keymaps/ (for example I created logitech-lx710-cordless
there). You can find the scancodes using evtest (sudo evtest
/dev/input/eventX, where X is your keyboard device. Be careful,
sometimes these extra keys are exposed through a different device or
your mouse interface: eg. event3 -- kbd, event4 -- mouse extra
keys). Here some sample output:

Event: time 1294153475.909379, type 4 (Misc), code 4 (ScanCode), value c1028
c1028 is the scancode value you're going to place in your keymap file, then
pick up a number from input.h as described earlier and convert it to
hexadecimal. Then write the remap pair in your file, maybe with a descriptive
comment, like this:

0xC1028 0x9a # rotate button

Iterate for every key 255.

2) you have to tell udev to apply this remapping file everytime it
encounters your keyboard, so edit the
/lib/udev/rules.d/95-keymap.rules file adding the udev rule that
matches your HW. Please don't ask me to define a rule for you. NOTE: you
can immediately apply your keymap file by yourself typing sudo
/lib/udev/keymap /dev/input/eventX /lib/udev/keymaps/$YOUR_FILE and
verify it with evtest once again.

Now, you can use the Gnome shortcuts editor to see that the keys are now
usable inside X and create new shortcuts. However it might happen that
no keysym is assigned to that keycode (so you'll see 0xXY instead of
XF86Foo). You can see current mappings through xmodmap -pke, save the
output into a file and edit it if you need (a full keysym code list is
available in /usr/lib/X11/XKeysymDB). Once you added the keysyms to
those keys you remapped, you can save this file as ~/.Xmodmap (or as
/etc/X11/Xmodmap if you wish to apply to every user).

At the end it's nice to see that I can use the rotate button for the
window selection, + and - for moving back and forth through my
workspaces and so on. Hope it helps!

I tried to keep it simple here, for further informations, improvements and
details -- man udev, man xmodmap, /usr/share/doc/udev/README.keymap.txt,
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/MultimediaKeys and
http://dev-loki.blogspot.com/2006/04/mapping-unsupported-keys-with-xmodmap.html

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 639976] Re: Typo in package description: NVIDIA 8 should be GeForce 8

2011-01-04 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
This bug was fixed in the package nvidia-graphics-drivers -
260.19.29-0ubuntu1

---
nvidia-graphics-drivers (260.19.29-0ubuntu1) natty; urgency=low

  * New upstream release:
- Added support for the following GPUs:
  o GeForce GTX 460 SE
  o GeForce GTX 570
  o Quadro 5000M
  o NVS 300
- Fixed a bug that caused some OpenGL applications to become unresponsive
for up to a minute on some GPUs when changing the resolution or refresh
  rate.
- Added support for NVIDIA 3D Vision Pro.
- See the Stereo X configuration documentation in the README for further
  details.
- Added a new X configuration option 3DVisionProConfigFile to allow user
provide a filename which NVIDIA X driver uses to store 3D Vision Pro
configuration settings. See Appendix B. X Config Options in the README
  for more information.
  * debian/control{.in}:
- Replace NVIDIA 8 with GeForce 8 in the description
(LP: #639976). Thanks to Gaurav Aggarwal for the patch.
  * Add support for blacklisting card ids from GRUB gfxpayload=keep:
- In Natty gfxpayload=keep is set by default so as to provide a framebuffer
early in the boot process. Some cards don't play nicely with it, therefore
we need to blacklist them in a file. The format is a sequence of lines of
  the following form:
vVENDORdDEVICEsvSUBVENDORsdSUBDEVICEbcBASECLASSscSUBCLASS
Blacklist lines are regex-matched against a corresponding PCI ID string.
In practice this means that you can replace any part of the ID string
  with .* to match anything.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 41301] Re: Mouse clicks stop working sporadically

2011-01-04 Thread Brent
Had an issue very similar to what is described above.

- mouse would either stop working or become trapped within a certain element
of a window.
- mouse would move around screen fine, but clicks would only effect wherever it
was trapped
- alt + tab would sometimes fix problem
- occurred in Ubuntu 9.10 and persisted through upgrade to 10.4
- happened for me at EVERY login, though sometimes I could open a window or two
before it began
- unplug then replug mouse in would sometimes be a temp fix, but the issue
would come up again quickly

One thing I noticed that was pretty common among posts is that many
people were using a Logitech mouse, I was too: Logitech MX518 USB mouse.

Switched mouse out for basic HP PS/2 mouse connected through PS/2 to USB
converter and issue cleared up COMPLETELY. New mouse works fine.

Another Note, the Logitech MX518 that was giving me the issue with
Ubuntu works fine with Windows XP.

the bug is in the uxa code.

*  I disabled antialiasing in  /etc/fonts/conf.d/10-antialias.conf

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 675156] Re: Fan allways working when using xserver-xorg-ati

2011-01-04 Thread Dan Allen
In my case, the fan is revving in a regular pattern. About every five
seconds it sounds like it's speeding up, then slows back down a second
later. It's really quite annoying, not to mention what it is doing to
the battery life. I would actually rather that it just run at a constant
speed.

This seems to be related to compiz. When an effect is used the cycling
starts up. If I rest on a screen for a while it seems to stay more idle.

Actually, my problem is likely different than yours. Your issue is that
the radeon card is still active, even if you are not using the driver.

I switch off the graphics card I'm not using with a startup script:

# disable radeon card
echo DIGD /sys/kernel/debug/vgaswitcheroo/switch
echo OFF /sys/kernel/debug/vgaswitcheroo/switch

# disable intel card
echo DDIS /sys/kernel/debug/vgaswitcheroo/switch

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 635362] Re: Xorg assert failure: X: /usr/include/xorg/privates.h:122: dixGetPrivateAddr: Assertion `key-initialized' failed.

2011-01-04 Thread Tormod Volden
SRU rationale: On all savage hardware this bug is critical and makes the
desktop unusable due to random X crashes. The attached minimal patch is
taken from the newer upstream release 2.3.2. It does not affect other
hardware.

TEST CASE: Use the normal desktop for a while, or activate random screen
savers. Especially use of accelerated graphics such as 3D applications
and notification bubbles can cause X to crash fast.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 670016] Re: Xorg crashes when performing gesture

2011-01-04 Thread Bryce Harrington
Diff looks good now, thanks. Still holding back, see comment 23. Should
we reject the current maverick-proposed version if this is urgent?

Given that this has some regression potential I think it needs to live
in -proposed for a bit to get adequately tested.

Regarding the current maverick-proposed version, the only known
regression seems to be fairly modest (behavioral change in how
maximization works), and the issue that it fixes (x server crashes)
seems to be pretty severe, and is getting confirmed by a number of
people. The behavior regression has only been reported by one person,
who isn't running stock packages (although he says it happens there too,
but solid evidence is missing).

I'd be tempted to allow the current proposal through. The benefit seems
to far outweigh the risk in this case. However, if you're not
comfortable with that, then yeah reject it out of proposed and put this
one in instead. We can then sharpen our pencils on seeing if the
alleged regression can be independently confirmed.

I do have one question, is it possible to put a EULA type agreement (do

You can put it into the deb.

The PPA has a description field, but it's purely informational and
doesn't support click-thru-agreement type behavior. It's good for
putting directions or caveats.

Regarding EULAs in debs, I've never done this myself, but you can put a
question into the preinst script. Some more info (and a tutorial):

http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2154352/including-license-agreement-in-deb-file

Not sure how that'd work in conjunction with a PPA, so you'll want to
test it. IIRC, it just does a text prompt on the command line, but
hopefully that'll get you in the right direction.

Some packages like mscorefonts and iirc some java packages include
install-time eula agreements, which might be worth studying. Fwiw I
think fglrx and nvidia do *not* require click thru's, but I'm not sure
how they handle the EULA agreement - perhaps the way they solved it
would be worth looking at as an alternate approach.

2011-01-04 Thread Bryce Harrington
Alright, I'm going to move this bug report off -evdev and back to just
xorg for now (actually I think it really should belong to the kernel,
but we'll continue tracking it with X for now).

It sounds like this package will be requiring an EULA, which makes me
doubtful it's something we can distribute with Ubuntu itself. Thus I'll
decline the nominations and drop the natty tag for now.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 691653] Re: compiz crashes when using alt-tab (the radeon driver kills it)

2011-01-04 Thread Bryce Harrington
Ok, that backtrace makes it pretty plain what's gone wrong:

Code:
_buf = radeon_drm_bufmgr_create_buffer_from_handle(ws-kman,
whandle-handle);

if (stride)
*stride = whandle-stride;
if (size)
*size = _buf-base.size;

State:
 #0 radeon_r300_winsys_buffer_from_handle (rws=value optimized out,
whandle=0x7fffe69964b0, stride=0x7fffe69963f4, size=0x7fffe69963f0) at
radeon_r300.c:123
 ws = value optimized out
 _buf = 0x0

So, it's a simple null pointer dereference. Now we have two questions:

* How/why did radeon_drm_bufmgr_create_buffer_from_handle() give us a null
pointer?
* If that is a permissible return value, the code should check for it. Should
it still call radeon_libdrm_winsys_buffer() in this case, or just return?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 379313] Re: Handling NextWindow Touchscreen (multitouch) via the nwfermi (proprietary) driver

2011-01-04 Thread Bryce Harrington
djp, I would recommend that you create a nwfermi project in launchpad
for tracking the driver. You can do this here:

https://launchpad.net/projects/+new

It's pretty easy, and I'd do it for you but I think you'd be better as
the owner of it so you have full control.

Once you have a project set up, you can attach one or more PPAs to it,
and we can move this bug report over to it. It will have its own bug
tracker, and you can add public or private mailing lists if you'd like.
It should be straightforward but if you have any questions, feel free to
contact me directly.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 691653] Re: compiz crashes when using alt-tab (the radeon driver kills it)

2011-01-04 Thread Bryce Harrington
Well, this is a pretty simpleminded check, but it looks like it might
prevent it from crashing at least.

Still doesn't answer why the null pointer got in there to begin with.

We've got a new mesa release coming soon. I poked through the git tree
looking for an obvious fix for this issue but didn't spot it. Still, I
think the next step would be to test a newer mesa to verify it still has
this bug, and then test out if this patch solves it, or just shifts the
issue to some other bit of code. (Guessing the latter).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 691653] Re: compiz crashes when using alt-tab (the radeon driver kills it)

2011-01-04 Thread Bryce Harrington
Browsed through the last month's worth of changes to the 7.10 branch for
mesa and didn't spot an obvious fix for this issue, however there were
several buffer validation patches for radeon, so it wouldn't surprise me
if the bug goes away in newer mesa.

If you'd like to test it now, you could install xorg-edgers, which has a
packaged snapshot of today's mesa:

https://edge.launchpad.net/~xorg-edgers

After testing, you can use ppa-purge to restore your system to its pre-
edgers state.

Or if you'd prefer, we anticipate the 7.10 final release immanently and
expect to have it in natty within the next couple weeks or so.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 657932] Re: X goes sideways

2011-01-04 Thread Hegh
It just happened again and I noticed a message about a timeout (510 ms,
I think) waiting for a GPU reset. I don't remember the exact text; the
machine hard-crashed and rebooted before I could write it down.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 544496] Re: [RS100] desktop became slow after upgrading to Lucid

2011-01-04 Thread Scott Talbert
In Maverick (with KMS enabled), the main performance issue I still
experience is slow scrolling in Firefox (especially when viewing pages
like slashdot.org and yahoo.com). I found recently that if I disable
EXA pixmaps (Option EXAPixmaps off in xorg.conf), my scrolling
performance improves greatly.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 656241] Re: Mixxx with ATI graphics card (using FGLRX) crashes Ubuntu

2011-01-04 Thread Phillip Whelan
This patch forces the QGL APIs to share the same OpenGL context, or so
it should, according to the documentation.

Hopefully this solves the problem. Unfortunately I have no way of
testing for myself, since I do not have an ATI card supported by the
latest FGLRX driver.
