Running: Ubuntu 8.10 9.04, NVIDIA GeForce 8600GT, and NVIDIA 180
series (newest) graphics drivers. Also running Compiz-fusion built into
Ubuntu.

Problem: Lots of websites that seem to use Javascript/Ajax heavy
scripts run VERY slow with NVIDIA drivers. This appears to be a Firefox
issue because I can run Opera, WebKit based browsers, etc and there is
NO issue in Linux. Only Firefox.

Example websites:
http://www.shacknews.com (during the main image transition to a new one the
browser slows to a crawl and wont even scroll)
http://www.slashdot.org (when scrolling to button the new ajax page reload
slows browser down)

Tons of websites have this problem with the Firefox 3.0/3.5 + NVIDIA
drivers. Those are just 2 test sites.

I have tried a hack suggested on Ubuntu's bug page(with same bug):
nvidia-settings -a InitialPixmapPlacement=2
But it really does nothing.

There is a long running bug page on Ubuntu's website that could be helpful to
devs:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/223238

Please Help!

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Run Linux with newest NVIDIA 180 drivers
2. Run Compiz-fusion
3. Run Firefox 3.0 or 3.5 with any of the websites listed
Actual Results:
SLW performance. Seems to be javascript/AJAX related.

Expected Results:
Normal fast performance as seen with other web browsers.

I have a nearly identical setup 8600gt, nvidia 180 driver, Compiz-
fusion. The given example pages load reasonably fast given their size
.5s or so. Similar performance on Windows and other browsers.

It's not a matter of the load times. It's a matter of the javascript
running while the pages are loaded. For example (as stated) on the
Shacknews example during the transitions of images in the Top Stories
area slow the web browser to a crawl if you try to scroll during them.

Also on Slashdot where you goto the bottom of the page during its reload
(where it loads more of the website) it loads very slow. MUCH slower
than Windows. There are many other websites that have issues too on the
Ubuntu bug page for the same issue here:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/223238

I don't see any issue on Slashdot when using their continuous page
besides the obvious reflowing of the document as content gets added.
Shacknews has a slight hitch when the transition is animating but
nothing severe. When I get a chance I'll enable the nv driver and see if
there is any difference.

phinn, can you possibly manage to reduce a web page that's slow for you?
Is the issue, as in the ubuntu bug report, some background image?

2011-01-10 Thread Phillip Whelan
In case you are not familiar with how to add patches to and compile
source code, here is a copy of the program for Ubuntu than you can
simply run to test this patch. You might have to go into the Properties
of the file and change it's permissions to include permissions to Run or
Execute the file.

If you know how to patch source code, we do have specific instructions
on how to compile Mixxx on Ubuntu on our Wiki:

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 700986] [NEW] [xorg-edgers] Wayland fails to start

2011-01-10 Thread shankao
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

I have added the wayland repo and launched the program with the
following error:

shan...@emilia:~/dev/natty$ wayland-compositor -b
/usr/share/backgrounds/space-01.jpg

shan...@emilia:~/dev/natty$ wayland-compositor: error while loading shared
libraries: libEGL.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or
directory

As a side note, some of the last ubuntu versions in that repo does not
seem to have build. The version that I get when I apt-get install
wayland is 0.1~git20101124.32ff6901-0ubuntu1~natty, so It has not some
of the last fixes made to the package neither the wstart script.

Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 585765] Re: Ubuntu 10.04 random freezes

2011-01-10 Thread Fran
I installed time ago Ubuntu 10.10 and stopped keyboard and mouse
freezing. Same hardware, no changes on it.

2011/1/10, John Bruno seldoviacomput...@gmail.com:
For my version of the bug (See post #210) I'm having similar results as
julius, 2.6.32-27 seems to have stopped the freeze, Although I'm still
using the acpi=force irqpoll boot options. My next step will be to
remove those and see if my system is still stable.

As always I urge everyone to check this bug report and the one at
 https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/627862
and post in the one that matches your specific symptoms.

 Thanks!

 Bug description:
   Hello,

on my new laptop, a HP ProBook 6440b (with Core i5 and a plain Intel
Chipset, 4GB RAM) I get randomly freezes of the whole system. I can't
reproduce that, what means I don't know a aplication or usage of the system
making it freeze. sometimes I have uptimes of a day, without freeze and
sometimes it freezes right after booting the system.

I found out, that sometimes the MagicSysRQ (R-E-I-S-U-B) works and let me
shut down the system, sometimes not. I don't know what makes that
difference. In the system log I can't find any unusual entries. But I foun
that the system log is still runing, so shuting down the wifi with the
notebooks hardware switch for example is logged. Also the Wifi network
connection to my router is not interrupted.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 701044] [NEW] Semi-frequent freezes in nouveau

2011-01-10 Thread Steveire
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-nouveau

One or more times a week my computer display freezes. I can still move
the mouse, but the screen doesn't update.

I think nouveau driver enters an infinite loop and consumes 100% CPU. I
think the X0rg.0.log confirms this, but I only installed debug symbols
today. This happens semi regularly, so I can provide more information if
needed:

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 701085] [NEW] Please merge libdrm 2.4.23-1 (main) from Debian experimental (main)

2011-01-10 Thread Benjamin Drung
Public bug reported:

Please merge libdrm 2.4.23-1 (main) from Debian experimental (main).

Changes since 2.4.22-2:

libdrm (2.4.23-1) experimental; urgency=low

   [ Sven Joachim ]
   * New upstream release.
   * Rename the libdrm-nouveau1 package to libdrm-nouveau1a, since upstream
broke the ABI without changing the soname.
 - Make libdrm-nouveau1a{,-dbg} conflict with libdrm-nouveau1{,-dbg} and
   remove the Breaks against xserver-xorg-video-nouveau.
 - Adjust the lintian override.
 - Bump libdrm-nouveau shlibs and symbols versions to 2.4.23.
   * Use dh_prep instead of the deprecated dh_clean -k in debian/rules.

I've copied the files to /usr/local/share/mixxx/ and the patched version
starts without problems, craches or waveform problems. The waveforms are
displayed correctly, where previously my X crached.

Good work!

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 541511] Re: MASTER: [i855] GPU lockup (apport-crash)

2011-01-10 Thread DavidM
Brian - I've been running this new kernel on lucid all this weekend -
not a single lockup. Seriously impressed. It even fixed a few niggles
such as screen dimming. Note - I'm running vanilla lucid with your
kernel - no other fixes or other graphic updates in my system.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 626974] Re: ABI change in xorg 1.9 breaks legacy nvidia-96 drivers in Maverick

2011-01-10 Thread Jukka Siitari
Still no released fix for this bug!!!

My Ubuntu has been unusable for 3 months now! Starts only to command
prompt after upgrading to Maverick. I do not want to go back to playing
with command prompt/scripts/whatever of the (very) old MS-DOS days. A
computer is a tool for me, not a toy to play with.

Quote from Ubuntu pages: Users of the official release, in contrast,
expect a high degree of stability. They use their Ubuntu system for
their day-to-day work, and problems they experience with it can be
extremely disruptive. Many of them are less experienced with Ubuntu and
with Linux, and expect a reliable system which does not require their
intervention.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 544496] Re: [RS100] desktop became slow after upgrading to Lucid

2011-01-10 Thread Scott Talbert
My card uses 64MB of RAM also. The driver disables EXA pixmaps if the
video RAM is 32MB or less. I'm wondering if this should be changed to
64MB or possibly more. Can anyone else confirm whether or not disabling
EXA pixmaps helps their performance?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 665546] Re: Drop and sub menus don't always show up

2011-01-10 Thread Jingyue Wang
I'm having the same problem. My system is Ubuntu Maverick amd64. I'm not
using compiz but using metacity with composite enabled. The problem is
the same as those described by other people. I also tried running
metacity with compiz, the problem is still there. My current graphics
driver is a proprietary driver downloaded from ati. But under a clean
installation(right after I installed maverick amd64 without using any
proprietary driver), the problem is still the same. Acutally I
downloaded the ati driver in the hope of solving this problem, but it
doesn't help.
