[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 706783] Re: [KM400] Xorg crash on Ubuntu 10.10
Athlon XP on biostar mobo with 1GB RAM running every thing before 9.04 with no problem - absolutely shut down since 10.04 to 31 January 2011. As it so happened... changed Monitor Preferences resolution from 1920 x 1080 (16:9) 1.7 ratio to 1680 x 1050 (16:10) 1.6 ratio screen measures 20 x 11.25 (16:9) 1.7 ratio Probably will not change anything but it was easy and worth a shot. the spell-checking feature annoyed me. Cleared option in Preferences and Tomboy 1.4.2 unceremoniously blinked off. I officially caught a lucky break. Discovered fix while absolutely furious and no destruction occured. Shut down, stopped into BIOS since I noticed references to RAM and BIOS settings in many explanations regarding openchrome and this bug. Planned: :/: Reboot and determine function :/: toggle VGA SHARE MEMORY SIZE settings to verify root cause of MALF. :/: toggle VIDEO RAM CACHEABLE settings to verify root cause of MALF. BIOS CHANGE LOG (Bottom line) State A Verify w/monitor res 16:10 State 1 VGA SHARE 64M RAM CACHE ONPASS State 2 VGA SHARE 32M RAM CACHE ONFAIL State 3 VGA SHARE 64M RAM CACHE OFF PASS State 4 VGA SHARE 32M RAM CACHE OFF FAIL State B Verify w/monitor res 16:9 State 1 VGA SHARE 64M RAM CACHE ONPASS State 2 VGA SHARE 32M RAM CACHE ONFAIL State 3 VGA SHARE 64M RAM CACHE OFF PASS State 4 VGA SHARE 32M RAM CACHE OFF FAIL CONCLUSION: BIOS SETTING>ADVANCED SHIPSET FEATURE>AGP & P2P BRIDGE PROTOCOL>VGA SHARE MEMORY SIZE appears to be the single point failure starting with 10.04 onward. As a courtesy - I point out that should one for some reason select VGA SHARE MEMORY SIZE [Disabled] it may well appear that the mobo is fried, or there is an issue with either the video card (some more) or monitor. Likely there are normal beeps, but display shuts down without so much as a BIOS screen. Navigating BIOS blind has about a 2% chance of success. One may clear BIOS with a jumper in most cases, but one will still have to go through BIOS and put all things back in place. BIOS SETTING>CPU & BUS CONTROL setting VIDEO RAM CACHEABLE [Enabled or Disabled] setting does not impact login loop issue. Ubuntu 10.04, 10.10 & 11.04 (somehow got updated while I was sleeping) Monitor Preference Setting for Screen Resolution did not impact login loop issue for the two states tested (16:10 and 16:9). eyeshavings RECOMMENDATION: set bios VGA SHARE MEMORY SIZE to 64M or max. Thank you to every one that said something, I needed Every Bit of the input I got. I hope this is useful to the next update. Apologies for going on so much. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 710762] Re: Middle mouse button no longer works
Okay, this was indeed an intentional upstream change in xf86-input- evdev. The changelog happens to carry some reasoning, too: commit 21a2ac818e75ef918d320ce1e88b6263e68e598d Author: Peter Hutterer Date: Fri May 28 09:47:17 2010 +1000 Disable middle mouse button emulation by default. The AUTO feature was the default, MB emulation was on until a middle mouse button was pressed. MB emulation however results in a delay of the first press, causing minor annoyances to the users and being generally confusing when the behaviour before a button press is different to after a button pres. Disable the feature by default instead. There's not a lot of two-button mice around anymore though and the inability to detect two-button mice makes for non-deterministic detection of when the emulation should be on. Middle button emulation can be enabled with a configuration snippet: Section "InputClass" Identifier "middle button emulation" MatchIsPointer "on" Option "Emulate3Buttons" "on" EndSection So, this is a little different than I thought. (And it even teaches me something I didn't know: it's hard to detect if a mouse only has two buttons!). We should keep an eye on what other distros do with this change. If Fedora, Debian, etc. choose to revert it, we should probably consider doing the same. Otherwise, it's effectively the new standard. Another thing to keep in mind is two-button mouses / middle clicking in general / left+right to middle click are kind of power-user features, so we can expect power-users to be happy configuring these things. I think this should definitely go in the release notes :) ** Also affects: ubuntu-release-notes Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-input-evdev in ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/710762 Title: Middle mouse button no longer works ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 710762] Re: Middle mouse button no longer works
Sojourner, did you find a changelog that relates to this bug? I was just looking and I couldn't find anything that sounded related within Ubuntu, though it could be something upstream. (I haven't looked there yet). If you still have that change and version number handy, I'm sure it would help to figure out what is wrong and resolve it :) ** Description changed: Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-input-evdev Since the update of xserver-xorg-input-evdev version 1:2.6.0-1ubuntu1, - the middle mouse button no longer functions in Natty. I have since - upgraded to version 1:2.6.0-1ubuntu3, but the middle mouse button still - fails to function. + middle mouse button emulation (left and right click together) no longer + triggers a middle click in Natty. I have since upgraded to version + 1:2.6.0-1ubuntu3, but the middle mouse button still fails to function. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 710762] [NEW] Middle mouse button no longer works
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-input-evdev Since the update of xserver-xorg-input-evdev version 1:2.6.0-1ubuntu1, the middle mouse button no longer functions in Natty. I have since upgraded to version 1:2.6.0-1ubuntu3, but the middle mouse button still fails to function. A workaround is to add the following section to /etc/X11/xorg.conf, but workaround should not be necessary to provide standard X11 functionality. Section "InputClass" Identifier "middle button emulation class" MatchIsPointer "on" Option "Emulate3Buttons" "on" EndSection 1) Release: 11.04 2) Package version xserver-xorg-input-evdev 1:2.6.0-1ubuntu3 3) Expect middle mouse button to perform Past action 4) Middle mouse button fails to operate ProblemType: Bug DistroRelease: Ubuntu 11.04 Package: xserver-xorg-input-evdev 1:2.6.0-1ubuntu3 ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 2.6.38-1.28-generic 2.6.38-rc2 Uname: Linux 2.6.38-1-generic i686 NonfreeKernelModules: nvidia .proc.driver.nvidia.version: NVRM version: NVIDIA UNIX x86 Kernel Module 260.19.29 Wed Dec 8 12:09:09 PST 2010 GCC version: gcc version 4.5.2 (Ubuntu/Linaro 4.5.2-2ubuntu1) Architecture: i386 Date: Mon Jan 31 10:48:53 2011 DistUpgraded: Fresh install DistroCodename: natty DistroVariant: ubuntu DkmsStatus: nvidia-current, 260.19.29, 2.6.38-1-generic, i686: installed nvidia-current, 260.19.29, 2.6.37-12-generic, i686: installed GraphicsCard: InstallationMedia: Ubuntu 11.04 "Natty Narwhal" - Alpha i386 (20110125) MachineType: Shuttle Inc SB83V10 ProcEnviron: LANGUAGE=en_US:en PATH=(custom, no user) LANG=en_US.UTF-8 LC_MESSAGES=en_US.utf8 SHELL=/bin/bash ProcKernelCmdLine: BOOT_IMAGE=/boot/vmlinuz-2.6.38-1-generic root=UUID=756673fd-3f0d-437f-92cf-b590e2c5c6c0 ro quiet splash vt.handoff=7 SourcePackage: xserver-xorg-input-evdev UnitySupportTest: dmi.bios.date: 07/13/2005 dmi.bios.vendor: Phoenix Technologies, LTD dmi.bios.version: 6.00 PG dmi.board.name: FB83V10 dmi.board.vendor: Shuttle Inc dmi.chassis.type: 3 dmi.modalias: dmi:bvnPhoenixTechnologies,LTD:bvr6.00PG:bd07/13/2005:svnShuttleInc:pnSB83V10:pvr:rvnShuttleInc:rnFB83V10:rvr:cvn:ct3:cvr: dmi.product.name: SB83V10 dmi.sys.vendor: Shuttle Inc version.libdrm2: libdrm2 2.4.23-1ubuntu3 version.libgl1-mesa-glx: libgl1-mesa-glx 7.10-1ubuntu1 version.nvidia-graphics-drivers: nvidia-graphics-drivers N/A version.xserver-xorg: xserver-xorg 1:7.5+6ubuntu8 version.xserver-xorg-video-ati: xserver-xorg-video-ati 1:6.13.2+git20110124.fadee040-0ubuntu1 version.xserver-xorg-video-intel: xserver-xorg-video-intel 2:2.14.0-1ubuntu2 version.xserver-xorg-video-nouveau: xserver-xorg-video-nouveau N/A ** Affects: xserver-xorg-input-evdev (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: apport-bug i386 natty running-unity ubuntu -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-input-evdev in ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/710762 Title: Middle mouse button no longer works ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 671292] Re: screen corruption in maverick
Also please note that I am not sure it's the fault of the graphics driver (nvidia in my case), it can be something else too, just I haven't noticed it with other card, though I have this bug on two different machines, both of them are equipped with nvidia card, and use nvidia's binary driver. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to nvidia-graphics-drivers-180 in ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/671292 Title: screen corruption in maverick ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 671292] Re: screen corruption in maverick
Now it becomes more and more annoying. It seems it always happen more or less frequently with all of the applications: menu elements etc are "stuck" in a corrupted way on all workspaces. For example the chrome/chromium issue I've mentioned: dragged items can be seen "floating" over all contents, on all workspaces. Also, menu by clicking on the background (nautilus), terminal's menu, VICE's (commodore emulator) menu, etc sometimes remain on the screen: sometimes only some "border", sometimes the whole content, sometimes some corrupted version of the original element. And it won't go away before I kill the application it opened the original item. For a demonstration I attach a screenshot. I guess it's the result of using "composite support" of metacity (I don't use compiz, but composition support of metacity activated via gconf key). ** Attachment added: "Screenshot.png" https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nvidia-graphics-drivers-180/+bug/671292/+attachment/1819295/+files/Screenshot.png -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to nvidia-graphics-drivers-180 in ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/671292 Title: screen corruption in maverick ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
