[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 712280] [NEW] Natty Live Session video problems on nVida 6150

2011-02-02 Thread Glen Ditchfield
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-nouveau

I booted a computer with an nVidia 6150 integrated graphics controller
from a CD burnt from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/kubuntu/daily-
live/20110202/natty-desktop-i386.iso. The image on the monitor
connected to the component output suffers from vertical roll.
Fortunately the monitor connected to the DVI output shows a stable
picture.

Note: this may be a continuation of launchpad bug 650770.

Hm. That looks pretty bad. Would it be possible for you to collect
logs from a livecd which displays that problem? Running “apport-collect

2011-02-02 Thread Chris Halse Rogers
This is not a bug; this is the dependency system working as designed.

The version of fglrx available from the archive (or, in fact, anywhere)
does not work with the new xserver. Attempting to install fglrx with
the new xserver would result in an unusable X.

fglrx will become installable again once a new release which supports
Xserver 1.10 is available.

I don't even think my brand new 14.1 MP camera can even capture that
level of detail.

I'll make a test image with a gradient and see if I can get a decent
shot.

The banding is very subtle unless you have a dark image.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 710630] Re: fglrx apport hook AssertionError in __setitem__

The consequence of this bug is it makes it harder for people to report
bugs against compiz (and maybe xorg). Since the purpose of the alpha-2
release is specifically for testing, particularly of Unity, this seems
worth it to me to include.

As an interim solution this works around the issue and adds the data:

ust = command_output_quiet(['/usr/lib/nux/unity_support_test',
'-p'])
ust =
ust.replace('\x1b','').replace('[0;38;48m','').replace('[1;32;48m','')

I assume in cases where the last line doesn't indicate that unity is
supported, they'd like to see the full details.

But I agree the color code stuff is ugly and should go.

If/when I ever get a few spare days I want to try to clean up the
integration of this script into the apport hook; it seems to have a
variety of problems.

2011-02-02 Thread Bryce Harrington
Doh! I dimly recall wondering about that seventh patch but I don't
recall why it was omitted. I've opened SRU tasks for possibly
backporting this to maverick and lucid (no promises, depends on whether
I have some spare time).

Anyway, I've packaged the new release for natty which includes the full
set of patches including the missing one. It will get uploaded after
the Alpha-2 freeze has lifted.

so it is probably something in the __setitem__ funciton of
problem_report.py of apport. It'd also be good if unity_support_test
had a switch made it not use colors.

Looking at the output of unity_support_test perhaps only the last line
is relevant?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 588918] Re: [Needs SRU to Lucid] Keyboard layout for Sindhi

2011-02-02 Thread Bryce Harrington
If I understand correctly, the bug was fixed upstream but xkeyboard-
config was not updated during Maverick so the fix is still outstanding
in Ubuntu.

I've pulled in the new xkeyboard-config package for Natty which I've
confirmed does in fact include this change.

I've opened two SRU tasks to backport the fix to maverick and lucid, in
case someone has time to file them.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 649809] Re: Meerkat (10.10) does not apply theme properly

2011-02-02 Thread The Compiler
I also have the same problem.

Intel i7-620LM, OCZ Vertex 2 SSD, Intel Corporation Core Processor
Integrated Graphics Controller (in the i7). So this doesn't seem to be a
NVidia issue. The sleeping workaround didn't work for me (starting a
gnome-session without a gnome-panel nor metacity, but with compiz and
avant-window-navigator). I ended up replacing gdm by kdm, which worked
perfectly.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 712167] [NEW] [SRU] Support for English-Indian keyboards

2011-02-02 Thread Bryce Harrington
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xkeyboard-config

[Problem]
The Indian government standards requires an "eng" variant to the "in" keyboard
layout.

[Impact]
Affects OEM hardware shipping Ubuntu in India. In particular, the rupee symbol
is noticeably absent.

[Development Branch]
This issue is verified fixed in the upstream xkeyboard-config codebase, which
is packaged for Natty and will be uploaded once the alpha-2 freeze has lifted.

The upstream fixes are:

http://cgit.freedesktop.org/xkeyboard-config/commit/?id=920cd81d09c26edb9520b4caa6eea45ef79ea396

http://cgit.freedesktop.org/xkeyboard-config/commit/?id=396de5b7138f25e49f4de3a0c871f09f08619867

[Stable Branch]
Backports of both patches to maverick and lucid are very straightforward (just
a minor tweak required to one Makefile.am file).

[Test Case]
On affected hardware, attempt to set the keyboard to the English-India keyboard
layout.
Or, attempt to use the rupee symbol.

[Regression Potential]
None, is just a keyboard layout configuration addition. Since this comes from
upstream it has been adequately reviewed. It has been available in the
upstream codebase since last September, so it has had plenty of testing time.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 711591] Re: does not detect resolution corectly

2011-02-02 Thread zeruke
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: xorg

this is probably a known issue...but xorg chooses wrong resolution on
live discs which causes bad graphical issues untill you figure out how
to get the resolution lower.for me it used to be were i could figure
it out but it seems now i cant because its really messed up as shown on
  the jpeg i added

and usually it does the same after installing which really causes
problems so it might be good to put it as safe graphics by default.

this one shown on the screenshot is from the 31-Jan-2011 daily live
  using a cell phone camera

  edit:
for some more info im useing a HP Pavilion dv6605us with a nvidia GeForce
7150M /nForce 630M built-in graphics the max screen resolution is 1280x800 for
the screen which is a 15"
+
+ edit2:
+ it seems nouveau is part of the problem because now no matter the resolution
i use i get the same graphical issues and i know that nouveau loads at default
when using nvidia till a different driver is loaded for it

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 685682] Re: [fglrx] compiz crashed with SIGSEGV in nux::IOpenGLSurface::UnlockRect()

2011-02-02 Thread Bryce Harrington
To answer #41 - first, it's "1.10" not "1.1". xserver 1.1 was a LONG
time ago. ;-)

Anyway, we've communicated this bug to AMD, and so we will hold out
until a new fglrx is released. Use -ati in the interim.

We can't fix/patch the fglrx driver ourselves since it is proprietary.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 710031] Re: amdcccle crashed with SIGSEGV in __libc_start_main()

2011-02-02 Thread Bryce Harrington
Might be just fallout from the recent update to new kernel and xserver,
which -fglrx does not support (see bug #709505).

Leaving this report open for now in case someone wants to take a look,
but probably it's a 'wontfix'. We'll have to wait for a new -fglrx from
AMD and re-test at that point.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 709505] Re: fglrx failed to install/upgrade due to being incompatible with 2.6.38 kernel

  [Problem]
- The -fglrx driver needs updated to work against the 2.6.38 kernel, as the
current version is incompatible.
+ The -fglrx driver needs updated to work against the 2.6.38 kernel, as the
current version is incompatible. It also needs updated to work with xserver
1.10, which was added to Ubuntu on 1-31.

  [Workaround]
For now, the only work around is to uninstall -fglrx and use the open source
-ati driver, which supports 2D on all AMD cards, and 3D on nearly all of them.
AMD will be providing an update to their driver eventually, which hopefully
should make it in time for the natty release.

  [Original Report]
This problem I have with kernel 37-12 and 38-1.
But with 37-12 startup is possible with a buggy system.

2011-02-02 Thread jerrylamos
Natty 20110201 today's build installing from USB onto an Aspire one
D255E and got this bug.

Was running Unity 3D fine on the -12 kernel. Updated to kernel -18 and
will not run Unity 3D so since the USB booted into Unity 3D O.K. tried
an install. So the failure occurred on 2 Feb with the latest daily
build 1 Feb.

Will try again on the next daily build.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 197589] Re: Numeric keypad no longer works after upgrade

2011-02-02 Thread Olivier Tilloy
A recent ugrade on my mom’s machine running lucid (lsb_release says
10.04.2) turned on the mouse keys in keyboard accessibility by default,
when they were previously disabled. This had the very annoying
consequence of the numeric keypad apparently not functioning any longer,
and only by googling the issue did I find this bug report and understood
what had happened. Needless to say, a normal user wouldn’t have found
this kind of solution by herself…

I’m attaching apt’s recent log with the list of packages that were
upgraded. This list doesn’t contain gnome-control-center, so the issue
may actually be with another package.

2011-02-02 Thread Bryce Harrington
The -nvidia proprietary driver does not yet work with xserver 1.10.
Known issue, you have to uninstall it and use -nouveau until NVIDIA
releases a version of the driver that supports xserver 1.10.

** Summary changed:

- latest update broke nvidia
+ -nvidia broken after Jan 31st updates, because it does not yet support
xserver 1.10

** Also affects: nvidia-graphics-drivers (Ubuntu Natty)
   Importance: Undecided
   Status: Confirmed

** Changed in: nvidia-graphics-drivers (Ubuntu Natty)
   Importance: Undecided => Critical

** Changed in: nvidia-graphics-drivers (Ubuntu Natty)
   Status: Confirmed => Triaged

** Changed in: nvidia-graphics-drivers (Ubuntu Natty)
Milestone: None => ubuntu-11.04-beta

** Description changed:

- Binary package hint: xorg
+ [Problem]
+ NVIDIA does not provide xserver 1.10 support in their driver yet.
+ Thus, its drivers do not work with Ubuntu starting on Jan 31st, when it moved
to xserver 1.9.99.
+ See https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-x/2011-February/001050.html

- in natty the latest update i did dealing with xorg broke my nvidia
- driver and then had it were all i could get to in my system was the
- CLI...i had to create a .Xauthority and then it showed that the gnaric
- drivers were not working to display gdm or anything but the CLI and said
- something about the VGA and screen going agenst each other (i dont
- remember how it was put)
+ [Original Report]

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 710630] Re: fglrx apport hook AssertionError in __setitem__

2011-02-02 Thread Bryce Harrington
Brian saw similar error reporting for compiz:
https://pastebin.canonical.com/42676/

However running unity_support_test directly doesn't cause a crash. Not
sure exactly what's going on, maybe we should add a try/catch around
that for now.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 380126] Re: [Karmic] Touchpad not recognised correctly, synaptics driver not in use

2011-02-02 Thread Nicolas Becker
I just tested the proposed package and it solves the problem. It works
as well as the kernel I compiled with the patch. For me the verification
is done, but I do not know where to change the said tag... Thanks for
the good work.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 711275] Re: [gm45] GPU lockup (EIR: 0x00000010) during boot - EIR stuck: 0x00000010, masking

2011-02-02 Thread Bryce Harrington
The GPU appears to be locking up during boot but the kernel is able to
successfully reset it and carry on. However, the crash still throws an
event, which apport catches and does a bug report on.

This looks a LOT like bug #702090 where the vesafb kernel driver was
loaded initially and causes the hang, but then gets ejected when the
kernel switches to DRM.

Can someone who is able to reproduce this issue reliably (look in your
dmesg output after booting) please try disabling vesafb and see if that
works around it?

Actually, I'll go ahead and dupe the bug, it looks the same even though
the description hints otherwise. You can undupe and explain further if
you're certain it's unrelated.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 710778] Re: [gm45] GPU lockup 5bf2794a (EIR: 0x00000010)

Could you explain in a bit more detail how you encountered the bug?

Offhand this sounds like perhaps a dupe of #711275, which occurs during
boot but is a false positive - the system doesn't actually hang or
crash, it just shows the error message and prompts to file a bug report.

Aside from the apport popup with the error message, did you notice any
other kernel or X misbehaviors/lockups associated with this?

Might be this is just a false positive, like #711275 and others that
have recently been reported.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 712105] Re: native display resolution/aspect not detected on ASUS G60

Not sure if this is an artifact of previously having used nvidia-current
(which is broken in natty ATM).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 380126] Re: [Karmic] Touchpad not recognised correctly, synaptics driver not in use

2011-02-02 Thread Hilmar Demuth
Hardware: Dell Vostro V13 and Ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid):
I've enabled (by gui) "lucid-proposed" as described in
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed. But I can only see a
xserver-pakage for the geode processor as upgrade for my system?

How can I test the new kernel?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 480220] Re: [i945] [i945][karmic] S-Video: PAL output is garbled

2011-02-02 Thread sewert
I just want to say that I observe exactly the same behaviour as Xake.
And it is really sad that after such a long time the bug is still
present. But thanks to Xake for trying out so many options and keeping
the bug alive (and valid).

Configuration:
i915 (Centrino 1)
Ubuntu 10.10 (Stock)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 649809] Re: Meerkat (10.10) does not apply theme properly

2011-02-02 Thread Muellni
I also have this problem with my Lenovo W510 (i7, nvidia graphics, SSD) and
Ubuntu 10.10.
Using kdm instead of gdm seems to work for me.
