[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 377175] Re: Volume Up button locks screen

2011-02-06 Thread frazzmatazz
Same problem here. Using a Macally Icekey keyboard

The Volume up key on this keyboard produces keycode 160 (keysym
0x1008ff2d, XF86ScreenSaver) using xev. And it seems this
XF86ScreenSaver is hard coded somewhere in X or gnome so you can't
reallocate it using the usual gnome keyboard shortcuts program.

In my case though I've disabled gnome-screensaver, to use xscreensaver.
So this key does nothing. And I also can't reallocate it to something
else useful, like putting the volume up!

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 649809] Re: Meerkat (10.10) does not apply theme properly

2011-02-06 Thread Pascal Hartig
Definitely related to SSDs. Installed 10.04 and 10.10 on HDD and SDD.
Occured only on the latter, in vanilla setup.

** (gnome-settings-daemon:1941): WARNING **: You can only run one xsettings
manager at a time; exiting
** (gnome-settings-daemon:1941): WARNING **: Unable to start xsettings manager:
Could not initialize xsettings manager.

My workaround so far is to kill gsd and nautilus manually:

killall -9 gnome-settings-daemon gnome-settings-daemon killall
nautilus

2011-02-06 Thread go4linux
just had it on my dad's machine. No SSD here. Maybe SSDs make it only more
likely.
However, I did install a new graphic card (Nvidia GTX 570). Not sure if I had
it before, though.

Solved it with workaround described in #68

I have now switched to an older tft - 1440*900 and the problem seems to
be gone.

I would like to switch back though - but I guess the graphics card can't take
it somehow.
Works fine in windows though;-)

And also, the bug #662071 seem to be a duplicated of this bug.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 649809] Re: Meerkat (10.10) does not apply theme properly

2011-02-06 Thread Lukas Z.
I suspect this problem to be connected with the overall performance of
the computer. There is most probably a race condition between gnome
settings and gnome, because as far as all posts go it can be easily
fixed by waiting for two seconds before trying to load gnome settings. I
have many computers with 10.10 running and only the best one (i7 820,
SSD) is having this problem, but not always, it is about 50/50.

Yes i was. But the system is somewhat strange (don't know how to describe).
I'll test it with todays build and report if the problem isn't solved (on my
Laptop).

Best regards

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 661910] Re: Kwin compositing problem on maverick

2011-02-06 Thread Eric Lacombe
Ok it seems to resolve the problems with xserver-xorg-video-intel
2:2.13.901-2ubuntu2~xup~maverick.

But note that with bleeding edge intel-driver from ppa:glasen/intel-driver
(2:2.14~glasen~maverick~ppa6),
there is still graphics problem with emacs : the cursor takes the shape of the
letters (with 'space' character the cursor disappear) !? (and have other
refresh problems)
And when I disable compositing effects, this problem disappear.

I hope this bug will not reappear on a future stable release.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 655078] Re: Beta 10.10 Nvidia update broke Sony Vaio VPCF136FM installation

2011-02-06 Thread Michael E. Adams
I finally got around to trying ppa:ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates and
installed their latest nvidia driver (270.18). I just wanted to report
that it works great on my system (the one that I opened this bug report
with). My thanks to the swat team.

Could someone answer this question?

Is Ubuntu going to use the efforts of this swat team for the next release of
Ubuntu or will this nvidia issue be left unaddressed as it has been for Ubuntu
10.10 on my Sony Vaio VPCF136FM. Does Ubuntu consider nvidia driver issues,
because they are closed binaries, not to be under their care or is this ppa
used by Ubuntu as part of their development process?

Thanks,
Mike

Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 655078] Re: Beta 10.10 Nvidia update broke Sony Vaio VPCF136FM installation

2011-02-06 Thread Alex M. Lowe
The next version of Ubuntu already includes version 260.29 in its
repositories (a version that works with the F series). It is likely
that the latest version of the driver will be included in the final
release and has simply yet to be included.

Many of the members of the swat team are also members of the team who
maintain X and the Nvidia and ATI drivers in Ubuntu itself. The
x-updates ppa is simply to provide newer packages for already-released
versions.

On 6 February 2011 08:26, Michael E. Adams 655...@bugs.launchpad.net wrote:
I finally got around to trying ppa:ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates and
installed their latest nvidia driver (270.18). I just wanted to report
that it works great on my system (the one that I opened this bug report
with). My thanks to the swat team.

 Could someone answer this question?

Is Ubuntu going to use the efforts of this swat team for the next release
of Ubuntu or will this nvidia issue be left unaddressed as it has been for
Ubuntu 10.10 on my Sony Vaio VPCF136FM. Does Ubuntu consider nvidia driver
issues, because they are closed binaries, not to be under their care or is
this ppa used by Ubuntu as part of their development process?

 Thanks,
 Mike

 Title:
Beta 10.10 Nvidia update broke Sony Vaio VPCF136FM installation

Status in “nvidia-graphics-drivers” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

 Bug description:
I have been using 10.10 beta on my new Sony Vaio VPCF136FM configured
  as follows:

  Processor: i7-740QM / 1.73 GHz
Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GT 425M GPU
  Display: 16.4 / 1600 x 900
  Memory: 6 GB

Ubuntu can't sense my display to set up native x-server properly - it
 defaults to 800x600.
I installed the NVIDIA driver when I originally installed 10.10 beta. Worked
 perfectly.
Yesterday's (10/04/10) NVIDIA driver update broke my system - won't boot
into desktop - locks up the system. I had to reboot into safe mode and remove
the new NVIDIA driver. I am now only able to run in safe mode 800x600 because
 Ubuntu can't detect my display.

  More info:

I tried reinstalling the NVIDIA driver. Rebooted to a failsafe root terminal.
Ran: nvidia-xconfig and received the following message:

  Using X configuration file:
      /etc/X11/xorg.conf

  VALIDATION ERROR:
      Data incomplete in file /etc/X11/xorg.conf.
Undefined Device (null) referenced by Screen Default Screen.

  Backup file '/etc/X11/xorg.conf' as '/etc/X11/xorg.conf.backup'

New X configuration file written to '/etc/X11/xorg.conf'

I try to reboot and I get a blank screen with a color background. I
  can't Ctrl-Alt-Del to reboot, I can't Ctrl-Alt F# to a virtual terminal.
I have to do a cold restart (i.e. hold the power button down to shutdown
and then reboot into failsafe graphics mode so I can remove the NVIDIA
driver to regain control of my system again).

2011-02-06 Thread jorgen jorgensen
problem was still there - lowering colors to 16 bit seemed to deal with it on
1440x900.
replaced monitor with the 1920x1080 with 16 bit colors - still ok.

So I guess my card/system has to low memory to handle 1920x1080x24. (256
MB video, 2 gigs of main memory)

well - the setup program could have guessed that, I guess - still -
happy I found the advice.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 565540] Re: Unmet dependencies in Lucid

2011-02-06 Thread Zhonya
I am fairly new to Linux. Just installed Ubuntu 10.4 on my Fujitsu Stylistic

keyboard. Searched Ubuntu Software Center for Fujitsu and appears that I need
FPIT input driver package installed. When I try to install it I get Package
dependencies cannot be resolved error...
anybody knows what dependencies they are talking about?
Any help greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 649809] Re: Meerkat (10.10) does not apply theme properly

2011-02-06 Thread Marco Biscaro
There is no specific hardware (HD type, or processor, or graphic card).

It occurs on race conditions (on fast computers, or on slow ones). In my
case, I have a slow speed HDD (and affect by ext4 problems, it comes
even more slow) and the problem occurs with frequence.

Maybe it is a GDM bug, that must assert that the gnome-settings-daemon
is killed before start the session.

Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 655078] Re: Beta 10.10 Nvidia update broke Sony Vaio VPCF136FM installation

2011-02-06 Thread Michael E. Adams
Excellent. Thank you so much for your answer and your work.

Please note that I would have made it a point to try the swat team
offering sooner to help in your efforts had I understood the team
membership relationship to Ubuntu itself (who I offered to help with
testing a bug fix for this issue) rather than rely for so long on the
script I provided in the Launchpad. Maybe others made the same error.
Sorry for my mistake.

Best regards,
Mike

The next version of Ubuntu already includes version 260.29 in its

that the latest version of the driver will be included in the final
release and has simply yet to be included.

Many of the members of the swat team are also members of the team who
maintain X and the Nvidia and ATI drivers in Ubuntu itself. The
x-updates ppa is simply to provide newer packages for already-released
 versions.

  Thanks,
  Mike

Beta 10.10 Nvidia update broke Sony Vaio VPCF136FM installation

Status in “nvidia-graphics-drivers” package in Ubuntu:
   Confirmed

  Bug description:
I have been using 10.10 beta on my new Sony Vaio VPCF136FM configured
   as follows:

   Processor: i7-740QM / 1.73 GHz
Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GT 425M GPU
   Display: 16.4 / 1600 x 900
   Memory: 6 GB

Ubuntu can't sense my display to set up native x-server properly - it
  defaults to 800x600.
I installed the NVIDIA driver when I originally installed 10.10 beta.
  Worked perfectly.
Yesterday's (10/04/10) NVIDIA driver update broke my system - won't boot
into desktop - locks up the system. I had to reboot into safe mode and
remove the new NVIDIA driver. I am now only able to run in safe mode
800x600 because Ubuntu can't detect my display.

   More info:

I tried reinstalling the NVIDIA driver. Rebooted to a failsafe root
  terminal.
Ran: nvidia-xconfig and received the following message:

   Using X configuration file:
   /etc/X11/xorg.conf

   VALIDATION ERROR:
   Data incomplete in file /etc/X11/xorg.conf.
Undefined Device (null) referenced by Screen Default Screen.

   Backup file '/etc/X11/xorg.conf' as '/etc/X11/xorg.conf.backup'

New X configuration file written to '/etc/X11/xorg.conf'

I try to reboot and I get a blank screen with a color background. I
   can't Ctrl-Alt-Del to reboot, I can't Ctrl-Alt F# to a virtual terminal.
I have to do a cold restart (i.e. hold the power button down to shutdown
and then reboot into failsafe graphics mode so I can remove the NVIDIA
driver to regain control of my system again).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 661026] Re: Xorg crashes when rotate second display ATI 5850

2011-02-06 Thread Stu Anderson
I have the same problem as mudhead. I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 AMD64 on a
Dell T3500 workstation w/ ATI v5800 and 3 screens (1 rotated, 2
horizontal). I can use ATI Catalyst to rotate the display and work
happily. I just have to un-rotate before shutdown so I can reboot
later.

The open source driver has rotation problems, as well. It appears to to
accept the command to rotate 1 of 2 displays (demanding a restart) but
then quietly ignores the rotation request.

I wonder if the root issue is memory management of the virtual area
implied by the bounding rectangle for the whole set of displays whose
area is now greater than the sum of the display areas. I note that the
extra virtual space below the horizontal displays is treated differently
in X11 than in Win7 (which works fine w/ my setup, sad to say). Win7
clips space at the bottom of the display. X11 lets stuff hang down into
it.

I have time, motivation and some skills to pursue these problems. How
do I sign up?

2011-02-06 Thread Chris Halse Rogers
That log looks like it's actually likewise-open that's failing, although
brasero is also suspicious; that log shows the xserver-xorg-core Breaks
(correctly) causing apt to remove xserver-xorg-video-v4l. Moving to the
likewise-open package.

There are still some drivers which need rebuilds, though. I'll get to
them today.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 652467] Re: xerver-xorg-video-ati dependancies need changing

2011-02-06 Thread Timo Aaltonen
Nope, -ati is needed since it's just a wrapper to load the real driver
(so 1 doesn't fly). Getting rid of -ati would mean hardcoding device
identifiers in the servers, instead of just matching the vendor id.
That's not going to happen either. The third option would mean saving a
mere 400kB on the disk for no real benefit so that's not going to happen
either, sorry.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 714412] [NEW] CPU usage hitting 99% - 100%

2011-02-06 Thread Calvin Gunn
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

at various times while surfing the web (I have used both FireFox and
Chromium) my CPU usage will spike to 99% some times pinning at 100%.
This mostly happens when I am on a site that is streaming live video via
an embedded flash player, but it some times does it when I have next to
nothing running, maybe a terminal window with IRSSI. Surely I shouldnt
be maxing 100% cpu with such a minimal amount of stuff running, not like
I am playing a CPU intense game or anything. Here is what I can
provide
