[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 727112] Re: nvidia-current does not detect hardware capabilities correctly

2011-03-03 Thread Daniel Knittl-Frank
hi bryce,

no more luck without an xorg.conf, why would it? there's not much in my
config, except the driver.

for classic desktop, i am running it already – desktop effects take too
much time and resources. i can try if desktop with effects works with
nvidia-173 driver, but i'm pretty sure it will (was nvidia-173 updated
for the new xserver already?)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 727979] Re: Screen flicker approx. every 30 seconds

2011-03-03 Thread Lucas Reece
Bryce,

Thanks for the rapid response.

No, the system is about 4 years old now. I've installed many distro's on
it in the past (#buntu's, openSUSE, Mandriva, PCLinuxOS, Fedora, Mint,
Debian etc. etc.) and have never had this screen flicker before. It's
the first time have tried Natty.

Hope that helps.

2011-03-03 Thread Lucas Reece
Bryce,

I've responded to this on the launchpad site.

It's only the second time I've filed a bug so hope I've done the right
thing. Apologies if not.

Lucas.

I see this is a fresh install; is this a new system or have you had
linux or other things installed on it previously? If so, did you notice
the black blinks then too? Had you been running natty prior to this

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 705949] Re: (Needs Q4 -intel) [Arrandale] Gateway NV79 Backlight and Monitor trouble

2011-03-03 Thread Daudi Amani
This NV79 issue has also been referenced here:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-intel/+bug/685727
among many other places.
Only the backlight is being turned off during boot and also after resuming from
a suspend. Using a bright flashlight shows that the video is still being
displayed but without the backlight, it appears to be black. Lucid worked fine
on the same hardware and there was no backlight being turned off issue.

Maverick 2.6.35-27, 2.6.35-25, 2.6.35-24 all have this issue. 2.6.32-27
Lucid works fine.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 723002] Re: External monitor not working properly

2011-03-03 Thread Corrado
apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected compiz-0.9

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: xorg

  Description: Ubuntu natty (development branch)
  Release: 11.04

An external monitor 1280x1024 connected to my netbook ACER aspire one D250
does not work properly. By toggling with Fn+F5 I manage to see the netbook
monitor only, both monitors cloned at low resolution 800x600 but not the
external monitor alone. More precisely I do but only the left bottom corner of
the monitor is used, seemingly a 1024x660 area corresponding to the resolution
of the netbook. The mouse pointer can go everywhere in the monitor (also in the
'black' area), however by clicking in some position one obtains the effect that
the click is done elsewhere.

Trying to manage the monitor with the Gnome monitor utility has the same
  consequencies.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 727620] Re: [Radeon HD 5650 and 5470] Driver crash during recovery boot and in normal boot

2011-03-03 Thread afoglia
I tried Bryce's second suggestion of using old kernels. I have two
previous versions of 2.6.38 installed, 2.6.38-3-generic and
2.6.38-4-generic. I booted each into recovery and normal mode 4 times,
for a total of 16 boots. Here's the number of times the boot was a
success, where I either got to the recovery boot menu or gdm,
(regardless of whether the screen brightness had to be manually
increased from 0, or if the plymouth boot screen displayed).

2.6.38-4-generic, normal: 1 success, 3 failures
2.6.38-4-generic, recovery: 4 successes
2.6.38-3-generic, normal: 4 successes
2.6.38-3-generic, recovery: 3 successes, 1 failure

At no time did I see a stack trace like the one I posted, but I've only
seen that in recovery mode. (Would it be written somewhere persistent
between boots? It's not in /var/log/syslog.)

I took more notes on the failures. They're pretty vague and
qualitative, but have slightly more detail of what each boot was like.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 723002] Re: External monitor not working properly

2011-03-03 Thread Corrado
I attach a photo. Notice where the pointer is (top left), and notice the
prompt 'Note Tomboy' which should appear only with the pointer on the
related icon.

Sorry for the bad quality (cell phone) but my camera is broken.

As regards comments #3, #4, ..., #23, I could not answer to all prompts
of apport-collect with the screen in that configuration (I cannot click
on the exact position!). I launched it with the bug appearing but
afterwards I had to switch with Fn+F5 to complete the procedure. Or,
please tell me how to do.

Thank you.

Good for you, Gaba. Glad that things are working for you. I am still
struggling to improve my laptop performance since upgrade from 10.04 to
10.10. The thing is dead slow. Farewell

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 665233] Re: Ubuntu Maverick with ATI RADEON screen corruption

2011-03-03 Thread Milton
SOLVED. (I hope!)

These are the steps:

remove everything that has something to do with the graphics enviroment,
as it says here:

Then,

$ sudo gedit /etc/default/grub

and change this line:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=quiet splash

for this one:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=quiet splash nomodeset acpi_backlight=vendor

then

$ sudo update-grub

reboot and be happy. Desktop effects work too.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 728562] [NEW] Xorg: Frequent SUDDEN logouts make my system unusable

2011-03-03 Thread zsolt . ruszinyák
Public bug reported:

Any program can reproduce the issue. F.e. clicking on things on
Facebook.com often causes my system to logout. I know about a similar
bug with NVidia cards, the workaround on
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1545846 doesn't work here. I
have an Intel i915 card with the preinstalled closed-source drivers. My
system is up to date. I hadn't experienced this before Ubuntu 10.10.

This is * annoying. Thanks.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 725580] Re: black screen on boot on radeon 9200

2011-03-03 Thread Sergey Shnatsel Davidoff
Radeontool is preinstalled in the current daily build. Here's the good
dump from radeon driver with nomodeset option. However, I can't obtain
the broken one now because I can run the system only as LiveCD on that
PC so I can't set up ssh, and switching to ttys doesn't work because the
display is screwed on the kernel level. I'll try to install ssh-server
on LiveUSB and boot from there; however, it will take time.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 728599] [NEW] Xorg freeze

2011-03-03 Thread johannes moquenco
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

Sometimes the screen goes blank, and the message appears, that Ubuntu is now
running with low graphic settings, and when I click ok, I have different
choices to choose. I can run ubuntu with that low graphic settings or I can
solve the problem, I can start the x server again..and something else..change
to Terminal.
If I choose solve the problem, I can view reports, which are forther in the
process stored in $xorg_backup_file (never could find this file)
well it happens every now and then...mostly when I have the vlc-player running.
I listen to music over it, so I don know ... when I watch films it never
happend.

Only a restart makes ubuntu running again, all the the current data is
lost, and sometimes I could start the x server again, but it stays on
blank screen for more then half an hour, so I do a restart by pressing
the Turn on button at the computer. After restart all is fine!

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 725580] Re: black screen on boot on radeon 9200

2011-03-03 Thread Sergey Shnatsel Davidoff
Sorry, I can't ssh into the affected machine because it doesn't seem to
have networking up when trying to use kernel modesetting. I get host
unreachable error.

Is there any chance that the bug will be fixed without that dump?

I forgot to add that I have successfully ssh'ed to that machine when
kernel modesetting was turned off.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 728643] [NEW] Kinetic scrolling implementation continues to send scroll event after physical action has stopped

2011-03-03 Thread Alex Launi
Public bug reported:

On natty with the multi-touch track pad on my macbook pro, when I do a fast
scroll on a tab, and then hit ctrl+w while the kinetic scroll is still in
progress, the system interprets this as ctrl+scroll and zooms into my page, and
then closes the tab.
