I have the same problem with a Radeon X1300 card and it can be fixed using the 'radeon.modeset=0' kernel option, so I guess it is related to KMS. However booting with the external monitor connected but switched off I get the correct gnome-desktop on the internal monitor.. Then switching on the external screen after logging in gives me desktops on both internal and external monitor. As expected. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 734784] Re: desktop crashes out if extra visual effects are applied
If you're running Ubuntu in a virtual machine, this can't be a bug in fglrx. In the virtual machine you can't access the Radeon graphics device directly. So you can't use the fglrx driver. Having fglrx installed without using it can cause problems. So if you have fglrx installed, uninstall it. It's no use to you inside a virtual machine. (There are special cases where you can make a dedicated graphics card directly available to the virtual machine, but then you can't use the same graphics card in the host OS, Windows 7 in your case. I don't think this applies to you). -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to fglrx-installer in ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/734784 Title: desktop crashes out if extra visual effects are applied ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 599017] Re: [gm45] Xorg freeze on Firefox on one particular page
We can reliably reproduce this bug here too. You can connect by shh, but the graphical interface appears completely frozen (except for the cursor). The Xorg process spins at 100%. We tried using Chromium instead of Firefox, and could not reproduce the problem. That seems to indicate that the problem is triggered by the Flash plugin. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 574152] Re: 64bit Ubuntu 10.04 Stops Responding
I also have been having system freezes since 10.04. Two types of symptoms , 1. mouse hangs , does not seem to depend on any particular activity, only cure is hard boot. 2. if sound is playing approx 2 seconds of sound is repeated continuously in addition to mouse freeze. Only cure is hard boot. This has happened on clean installs of 10.04, 10.1 and 11.4 , all exactly same symptoms. Only workaround I have found is to boot with acpi=off in GRUB , never had a freeze using this option but with this option system will not power off with the shutdown command so have to manually power off (not good) . -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg-server in ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/574152 Title: 64bit Ubuntu 10.04 Stops Responding ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 735126] [NEW] [natty] system freezes on boot without disabling KMS
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-ati After upgrading maverick (x86 32 bit system but with PAE kernel) system does not boot, after some disk activity the upper half of the screen is filled with garbage and no more disk activity. Booting an older kernel (from maverick) works. Also it work with natty's kernel if I give radeon.modeset=0 parameter at grub but then there is now hw accel. (glxinfo reports software rendering, booting natty with maverick's kernel seems to have it, glxinfo reports galium as the render string then). [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 661546] Re: Slow graphics on Mobile Intel 943GML
I'm running into the same issue on Natty. This is on a MacBook 2,1 with an external monitor. Intel 945GM chipset. It appears to be related to the framebuffer size. The laptop panel works fine alone, as does an external monitor at 1920x1080 alone. However, if I enable both displays at full resolution, then I get the Failed to set tiling on frontbuffer error message in Xorg.0.log, and compositing is *very slow*. If I reduce the resolution on both monitors, then I can get it working correctly again.
