[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 732304] Re: Intel sandy-bridge dual-head GPU hang

2011-03-25 Thread Bryce Harrington
@yope, I see you're running a somewhat older kernel. Can you please
update to current natty and check if you can reproduce the issue there?

I ask because we've fixed several quite commonly encountered gpu lockups
between the kernel this is reported against and current, so want to make
sure what you saw is not just an already solved issue.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 741349] Re: Screen Corruption (font glitches)

2011-03-25 Thread Bryce Harrington
Is this a recent regression on natty, or has it been happening as long
as you've been using natty? If the former, when did you first start
noticing it?

I see you're running compiz. Does it occur when using Classic Desktop
(no effects) as well?

Do the font glitches occur 100% of the time? Or do they occur only
periodically or after certain activities (e.g. scrolling quickly).

Are the glitches on the screen permanently or is there some action you
can take to clear them (minimizing/maximizing windows, etc.)?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 729944] Re: Flickering backlight on Thinkpad T400

2011-03-25 Thread Bryce Harrington
X no longer is in charge of power management for desktops, since a
couple years; this is moved out to the desktop environment. On gnome,
I'd point you to gnome-power-manager, but I don't know what the analog
is on KDE.

Talk with the Kubuntu/KDE folks to find out what package in KDE is
responsible for power settings, and then target this bug to that
package. (Click the downward pointing arrow under 'Affects' and type
the correct package name into the Package field.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 713877] Re: No desktop effects and no True Color color depth

2011-03-25 Thread Bryce Harrington
If the issue happens before X is even loaded, then that means it's not
an X bug.

It sounds like plymouth (or perhaps grub or something else in the
plumbing layer) put the GPU into a bad state, and so when eventually X
came up, it couldn't fire up 3D on it, thus no effects.

You might try booting earlier alphas of natty to see if you can bracket
when it started.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 709896] Re: Lenovo X200s: wrong screen size - wrong DPI

2011-03-25 Thread Bryce Harrington
It looks like X is figuring out the correct values, but these days on
-intel modesetting is done by the kernel. The kernel establishes the
initial mode, dpi settings, detects monitor resolution, and so on, and X
does not tinker with them anymore.

However, X does expose the kernel functionality to userspace so config
tools can update or change the settings. So it could be possible KDE is
doing something to force 96 dpi or something. But I'm not familiar
enough with KDE to guess.

So, I'll bump it over to the kernel to look at.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 680135] Re: natty Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM/GMS, 943/940GML bad performance

2011-03-25 Thread Bryce Harrington
This bug is not actionable as it stands. I don't reproduce this problem
and no one else has reported similar behavior in the few months since it
was reported so guessing it's either something peculiar to kwin or a
configurational issue.

Fwiw, for performance bug reports you should provide measurements such
as framerate measurements from a game (NOT glxgears; glxgears
performance bug reports are not accepted). The general debugging
process for such issues when they are regressions from older versions is
to identify the most recent version where it worked properly, too.

Sure; actually just file a new bug when apport pops up the dialog,
that's the best way since it'll collect fresh logs and such. If you'd
like, mention this bug # when you file the new one and we can link them
together.

2011-03-25 Thread Bryce Harrington
@Andy, Colin, I've noticed a significant drop-off in bug reports with
the vesafb conflict since that fix went in. (Which is particularly
notable since rate of bugs getting reported is definitely going up, as
many users seem to be upgrading at this point.)

However, mpt seems to still be seeing what looks like basically the same
issue as before. (There may be others still seeing it too, but still
debugging things.) Perhaps the full brunt of the fix is not taking
effect for some reason on mpt's system?

Unfortunately on K8M890 chipset you cannot enable compiz effects. In
Openchrome the DRI is not implemented yet for all chrome9 chipsets

Ignore the last reply, there is something overworking at that situation,
but I´m not sure if it is the computer cooler fan or the cd drive. I got
the same problems in the current natty release, will be trying again the

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 522061] Re: Nvidia proprietary drivers fallback test failed

2011-03-25 Thread Chad A. Davis
Leaving the xorg.conf in place, commenting out the 'Driver' line, also
allows driver fallback (nvidia to nouveau) to work correctly.

And the color depth is 24 (verified in Xorg.0.log), in both cases:
whether nvidia is used, or if it falls back to nouveau.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 734756] Re: Blank screen when booting with external monitor

2011-03-25 Thread Bryce Harrington
feffemannen,
Please run the tool intel_reg_dumper once when the screen is working correctly,
and once with it showing the blank screen / out-of-range error, and attach both
files. Comparing the register settings for them may highlight where the
problem is.

Perhaps would also be helpful to have an Xorg.0.log from the failed boot
and one from the working boot, to see how X is differing in its
capabilities detection.

However, ultimately I think this may be a KMS bug.

2011-03-25 Thread Bryce Harrington
This looks similar to another arrandale bug already reported (and
forwarded upstream), however I notice you're using some odd non-ubuntu
kernel, so not sure if it's a true dupe or just something wrong with
that particular kernel. If you'd like, see if you can reproduce using
stock natty kernel, although I think we have sufficient debug info on
the other bug reports.

Hi Aditya, this looks similar to a bug believed to be fixed in the
2.6.38-7.36 kernel. Please upgrade to latest kernel and re-test. If
you still see a freeze, it would be best if you could file a new bug
if/when apport pops up the bug reporting dialog, so it'll collect up to

2011-03-25 Thread Bryce Harrington
Hi jimakker, I'm not sure whether this bug is fixed or not, but upstream
believes it to be resolved now with a patch included in the 2.6.38-7.36
kernel which is available in latest natty. I'm less certain of that,
but I think to move forward we'd need it tested against that (or newer)
kernel and a new report filed via the apport dialog.

I'm hoping that you are not seeing this bug anymore so we can consider
your issue solved, but if not your time filing a new report will be
appreciated.

2011-03-25 Thread feffemannen
With the success_boot I booted with the external monitor turned off
and then when desktop showed on to internal monitor I switched the
external monitor on. (The result was a desktop on the external monitor
as expected.)

With the filed_boot I booted with the external monitor turned on and
after waiting till activity seized I Ctrl-Alt-F1 to command line mode
and made the dumps.

Thanks for taking your time and looking into this.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 522061] Re: Nvidia proprietary drivers fallback test failed

2011-03-25 Thread Alberto Milone
@Martin
Removing xorg.conf in Natty won't prevent the xserver from loading nvidia and
will also set DisplayDepth to 24, thanks to a patch that we included in the
xserver.

What we still need in xorg.conf is the Nologo option, otherwise users
will see the Nvidia logo every time the xserver starts.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 732304] Re: Intel sandy-bridge dual-head GPU hang

2011-03-25 Thread yope
@Bryce, I was running up-to-date versions of everything when I initially posted.
I just updated and commented-out the shadow option in my xorg.conf file as
you suggest, restarted the X server and until now, no lockups.
But the display glitches are back. See the attached screenshot.
Should I file a new bug-report for the glitches?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 742175] Re: [i915] xserver crashes abruptly (OOM?)

2011-03-25 Thread Sergey Yanovich
It looks like your system ran out of memory for whatever reason. X
just happens to be the first really critical thing to notice that
there's no memory left. It tends to need memory for doing its stuff. ;-)
The reason you can't restart X is because the GPU got left in an
inconsistent state (which is probably a bug in itself, but not the
primary issue here).

It is certainly not so:
host2:~$ free
 total used free sharedbuffers cached
Mem: 1533292 807152 726140 0 28352 374208
-/+ buffers/cache: 4045921128700
Swap: 1888252 01888252

But, I can try to help you figure out what actually is causing this bug. (As
it is, the info you've collected doesn't really do much to pinpoint what's
 going on.)

Thanks. I will collect necessary data.

Can you tell me a little more about your system. Are you booted off a
hard drive or usb key or cd?

The system boots from compact flash. CF is 100% IDE-compatible. I've no
problems with this config since 9.04 or so.

How long have you been running natty?

I've had natty kernel since 2.6.37-12 or earlier. The CPU on the system
is jusy 1.1 MHz single core, so hardware acceleration in new kernels
helps a lot. I dist-upgraded to full natty a week ago.

When did you start noticing this bug?

The problem immediately appeared.

 Has it happened multiple times?

Is happens every boot, sooner or later.

What is unique or unusual about your system?

It is configured to run from a flash, so most regular writes goes to
memory (fstab attached). Other than that, it is a usual Vaio VGN TX-
770P.

Does it always happen after about the same period of time?

No the period is different.

Does running a certain app or combination of apps make it more likely
to crash?

I haven't run natty long enough to gather data. So long my usual session
was several gnome-terminal tabs, firefox and pidgin. I would say that
crashes happen when I have pidgin talks, but it is not certain.

I wish I could say the issue is gone for me too. But I can't. It just doesn't
work.
Whole computer hangs so I cannot get any messages too. Cannot log in over
network,
sysrq doesn't work.

Anyway, most probably it is another bug, we can close this report. I won't be
reporting
a new one though (because I really can't get any useful information on this
one, except
that linux-image-2.6.37-02063701-generic is the latest one which doesn't hang).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 742380] Re: Error activating xkb configuration

2011-03-25 Thread Dave Walker
On a system which is the same model as the reporters, which was upgraded
from Maverick - with the option previously added, i could not reproduce
this behaviour.

Additionally, removing the option and re-adding it I could not
reproduce. I think this needs to be tested on a fresh installation or
livecd... Note, having the hardware as mentioned in the bug should not
be a requirement to reproduce this bug.

Thanks.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 736500] Re: very jumpy cursor with wacom-dkms

2011-03-25 Thread Timo Kluck
I can reproduce this problem on a fresh daily live-usb with only xournal
and ppa:utouch-team/unstable as extra software. I uninstalled xserver-
xorg-input-wacom to make the evdev driver take over.

I can reproduce it both with my tablet's built-in wacom, and with my
girlfriend's Bamboo PenTouch. I attached her device's properties in
case it is of any use.

Please let me know if there's anything I can do to help track this down.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 742157] Re: touchpad cannot deactivate RTCornerButton and RBCornerButton

2011-03-25 Thread Phil
After a restart of X-Server the changes done by this KDE- Config Tool
are lost!

Neither this worked:
Option RTCornerButton 1
Option RBCornerButton 1
Option LTCornerButton 1
Option LBCornerButton 1
nor that:
Option RTCornerButton 0
Option RBCornerButton 0
Option LTCornerButton 0
Option LBCornerButton 0

Gnomes config tool (and gconf-editor, too) can only active or deactivate
clicking by tapping. But no tapping at all is no solution, too!

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 725434] Re: something (libcairo2) causes a significant 'across the board' memory use increase with -nvidia loaded

2011-03-25 Thread Martin Pitt
Sebastien is currently working on splitting out the GL backend for
natty, to work around this. Therefore this isn't release critical any
more for the nvidia driver.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 522588] Re: nVidia 8600 GTS needs NoPowerConnectorCheck option to work

2011-03-25 Thread Martin Pitt
The best thing we possibly could do is to ensure that the user sees that
log message when X fails (i.e . all the (EE) parts of it), as this will
be our best bet to see what's failing.

I don't want to set this option by default in the jockey handler, as it
is not a configuration option as such, but a kind of unbreak this
driver quirk.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 742517] [NEW] [sandy bridge] xorg freezes with 100% cpu usage

2011-03-25 Thread Rechner-Tester
Public bug reported:

xorg freezes randomly with 99% cpu usage on one cpu core. I can still move the
mouse and use ssh to login/restart. Switching to a console with CTRL + ALT +Fx
or using CTRL + ALT + BACKSPACE (after enabling of course) doesn't work.
Compize is disabled (no 3D support for the integrated graphics).
I believe (but I'm not sure) this happens when switching to an other
application, showing the desktop or switching to an other virtual desktop.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 522588] Re: Ensure that X.org startup failure displays (EE) messages to the user

2011-03-25 Thread Paolo Sammicheli
Hello Martin!

Thanks for spending time with this bug. Please note that in this bug the
fallback driver doesn't work and all we get it's a dark screen. Changing
termina with ALT F1, F2 you get the textual login. Do you think it would
be possibile to have the fallback to the free driver?

For any test or whatever check you would need just ask me :)

Thanks in advance!

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 736500] Re: very jumpy cursor with wacom-dkms

2011-03-25 Thread Timo Kluck
This trivial patch to xournal is a workaround. The surrounding code (a
function called 'fix_xinput_coordinates') suggests that this bug has
existed (in xinput? gdk?) for some time already. It just manifests
itself slightly differently with these new packages, which makes
Xournal's workaround fail.

I will submit this patch to Xournal.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 737349] Re: Failed to detect second monitor

2011-03-25 Thread Alberto Milone
The main problem here is the fact that the nvidia driver doesn't support
the RandR 1.2 protocol, therefore neither the following command nor
monitors hotplug are expected to work:

xrandr --output DVI-0 --auto --left-of VGA-0 --auto

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 737891] [NEW] gnome-display-properties unable to correctly enable monitors connected to VGA

2011-03-25 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Binary package hint: x11-xserver-utils

While trying to connect external monitors through VGA in my Lenovo x201
with Intel HD Video graphics, gnome-display-properties fails to
correctly display in the external monitors IF LVDS is set to off. If
LVDS is kept on, then external monitors work correctly (Note that I'm
not duplicating screens between LVDS and the external monitors).

To reproduce, do as follows:

1. Connect external monitor to VGA output.
2. Launch gnome-display-properties and enable external monitors.
3. At this point, both LVDS and external monitor should be working just fine.
4. Using gnome-display-properties, turn off LVDS.
5. At this point, the image in the external monitor looks like [1].

Now, note that when disabling LVDS with xrandr instead of gnome-display-
properties, then the external monitors have a correct image and [1] is
not reproduced.
