[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 748080] Re: ATI card fan is always on with opensource radeon driver
When i use opensource driver for ATI card - notebook fan always spinning and themperature of outgoing from fan air is very high, even when I set /sys/class/drm/card0/device/power_profile to low and cpu mode to powersave. With proprietary drivers (fglrx) I set video card performance to "ondemand" (I forgot the exact name of this mode in ATI control center) and cpu mode to ondemand, and notebook isn`t hot, fans not spinning (if I not start flash, games or some similar app with high cpu load). So with fglrx I can use notebook from battery 1,5-2 hours and it`s not hot, but with opensource driver battery of notebook is down in 50 minutes, fan is olways on, it noise is loud, and notebook is very hot. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-ati in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/748080 Title: ATI card fan is always on with opensource radeon driver ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 752255] [NEW] [q45, maverick regression] second montior only available a few minutes delayed after system start
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel This is a regression from maverick. I have a dual monitor setup (2x DVI). The second monitor is not available after a system start. xrand does not show it either. A few minutes after working (gnome classic), the monitor is detected and enabled automatically. Everything is fine then (except the desktop icon mess of course). I can't find anything regarding output HDMI2 in Xorg.0.log. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 727979] Re: Screen flicker approx. every 30 seconds
Upstream says something outside X is probably polling every 30 sec looking for monitors. This is unnecessary since the kernel automatically fires events when a monitor gets connected/disconnected. Best guess is a daemon like upowerd or keventd is running. Look in `ps aux` to see if you have one of these running, and see if you shut it down or kill it if the bad behavior stops. If not, look for other daemons, services, or clients you might be running which could be polling for monitors and try killing them off one by one to narrow what is causing the issue for you. ** Changed in: xserver-xorg-video-ati (Ubuntu) Status: Triaged => Incomplete -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-nouveau in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/727979 Title: Screen flicker approx. every 30 seconds ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

Btw, I notice you had a virtualbox installation failure. You might want to try removing that from your system to eliminate it as a potential cause of this problem. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 735126] Re: [natty] system freezes on boot without disabling KMS
Hi LGB, thanks for persisting with the additional testing, and figuring out how to work around the network issue. Looking at netconkern.log, I agree with your assessment that the failure occurs well before X starts up. The log is a bit confusing as to what exactly is failing, however it appears that drm initializes (successfully apparently), at 19 sec, and then failures begin to occur when networking is set up: [ 79.112037] ieee80211 phy0: Failed to initialize wep: -110 [ 243.716037] INFO: task jbd2/sda1-8:263 blocked for more than 120 seconds. Then various parts of the kernel start failing with errors relating to I guess memory errors? It is quite interesting that toggling KMS on or off changes the behavior. This makes me wonder if perhaps the issue is that the drm module is leaving the kernel in an inconsistent state, such that subsequent modules fail. I've added a task for the kernel, since this appears to be a kernel drm bug of some sort. ** Also affects: linux (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Bug watch added: freedesktop.org Bugzilla #36007 http://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=36007 ** Also affects: xserver-xorg-driver-ati via http://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=36007 Importance: Unknown Status: Unknown -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-ati in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/735126 Title: [natty] system freezes on boot without disabling KMS ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

When trying discovered that on the test machine I was using all kernels are working now, even ones that didn't work previously. It is interesting others are seeing similar problems, which may or may not be the same bug, but for purposes of this bug report we're only going to focus on Lucas' issue since he is the original reporter. Sometimes two different X bugs can have symptoms that are indistinguishable, particularly so with flickers. If you are certain you have Lucas' bug, stay tuned. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 727620] Re: [Radeon HD 5650 and 5470] Driver crash during recovery boot and in normal boot (Regression from 2.6.38-3 to -4)
Chris Halse Rogers wrote in #22: "This does look a lot like some bad interaction between i915/radeon" I agree - I did some more testing and placed an entry for the radeon- module into /etc/initramfs-tools/modules, and voilá - no crash! (after booting into X I can't get back to the text-console, but that's possibly another issue). What proves the "bad interaction" even more is: when also placing "i915" into /etc/initramfs-tools/modules BEFORE "radeon", booting isn't possible at all any more, but when placing i915 AFTER radeon, booting is possible, but I got a black screen (as in totally black, that is: no backlight) until X starts up. I'll try to get logs of four different initrd-configurations (though I doubt I'll be able to record the one where the crash occurs already during running of initrd...) [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 751927] Re: fglrx fails to come up and hangs the system
The apport hook issue was fixed; I'll trim down the bug report to focus on the fglrx specific issue. ** Description changed: Several things happened when I tried to access apport. Here is my console log. - john@john-testbedGA-MA78LM-S2H:~$ man apport - No manual entry for apport - john@john-testbedGA-MA78LM-S2H:~$ ubuntu-bug fglrx - ERROR: hook /usr/share/apport/package-hooks//source_fglrx-installer.py crashed: - Traceback (most recent call last): - File "/usr/lib/python2.7/dist-packages/apport/report.py", line 654, in add_hooks_info - execfile(hook, symb) - File "/usr/share/apport/package-hooks//source_fglrx-installer.py", line 338 - ): - ^ - SyntaxError: invalid syntax - john@john-testbedGA-MA78LM-S2H:~$ (firefox-bin:1888): LIBDBUSMENU-GTK-CRITICAL **: dbusmenu_menuitem_property_set_shortcut: assertion `gtk_accelerator_valid(key, modifier)' failed and then I finally was able to get this john@john-testbedGA-MA78LM-S2H:~$ bin/bugger fglrx Description: Ubuntu Natty (development branch) Release: 11.04 fglrx: - Installed: 2:8.840-0ubuntu1 - Candidate: 2:8.840-0ubuntu1 - Version table: - *** 2:8.840-0ubuntu1 0 - 500 http://ca.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ natty/restricted amd64 Packages - 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status + Installed: 2:8.840-0ubuntu1 + Candidate: 2:8.840-0ubuntu1 + Version table: + *** 2:8.840-0ubuntu1 0 + 500 http://ca.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ natty/restricted amd64 Packages + 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status (Yes, I do have a script for this) I am running on "low graphics mode". The above is not too surprising for a beta, but back to fglrx. Earlier I reported a bug on this item, then I got an update and this is what happened. 1. Something went wrong with my hard drive and the partition table seems to be scrambled, however I have a off-line backup system and was able to download the beta 1 disk. 2. After saving as much as I could of my hard disk content, I built a new boot sector, and repartitioned the disk, then installed the 11.4 beta1 disk. It sort of failed, but I got up enough to run dpkg from the boot, and this seemed to clear up the problem. I was able to boot, and it gave me a look at Unity. Not sure I like it, but time will tell. 3. Following the usual procedure for drivers, I activated fglrx, which then wanted a boot, so I did. 4. On come up, the system hangs, not listening to either keyboard or mouse (much). I was forced to reboot using SysRq emergency orderly shutdown. 5. I was able to reboot on Low Grapphics (sans fglrx) When the fglrx mess first started, characterized by large black areas, I was able to get a screen shot. I will add the URL for this after I get back to 10.10 and can place the image on my web pages. This will be later this afternoon, I suppose, since once this is filed, I am switching back to my production system. I hope this helps in various areas, but I really wish AMD would get on with it. Oh, and just in case you wanted the installer facts, here they are: john@john-testbedGA-MA78LM-S2H:~$ bin/bugger fglrx-installer Description: Ubuntu Natty (development branch) Release: 11.04 N: Unable to locate package fglrx-installer john@john-testbedGA-MA78LM-S2H:~$ bin/bugger "fglrx-installer" Description: Ubuntu Natty (development branch) Release: 11.04 N: Unable to locate package fglrx-installer Hmm, that doesn't seem to be present. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 747102] Re: package fglrx 2:8.780-0ubuntu2 failed to install/upgrade: fglrx kernel module failed to build
Looks like it failed attempting to build the 8.780 version of fglrx, which is what we shipped in maverick, but was building against the natty kernel. You should run the 8.40 version of fglrx with the natty kernel; the older fglrx lacks support for the 2.6.38 kernel. ** Changed in: fglrx-installer (Ubuntu) Status: New => Invalid -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to fglrx-installer in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/747102 Title: package fglrx 2:8.780-0ubuntu2 failed to install/upgrade: fglrx kernel module failed to build ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 748115] Re: package fglrx 2:8.840-0ubuntu1 failed to install/upgrade: fglrx kernel module failed to build
You appear to have an incompatible version of the linux kernel installed, version 2.6.39-020639rc1, which is not the kernel we're shipping in natty, 2.6.38.x.x. -fglrx is only supported on the 2.6.38 kernel in natty so you'd need to move to that kernel if you want to use fglrx. ** Changed in: fglrx-installer (Ubuntu) Status: New => Invalid -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to fglrx-installer in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/748115 Title: package fglrx 2:8.840-0ubuntu1 failed to install/upgrade: fglrx kernel module failed to build ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
