[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 748080] Re: ATI card fan is always on with opensource radeon driver

2011-04-05 Thread Vitaly Zawullon Katraev
When i use opensource driver for ATI card - notebook fan always spinning
and themperature of outgoing from fan air is very high, even when I set
/sys/class/drm/card0/device/power_profile to low and cpu mode to
powersave. With proprietary drivers (fglrx) I set video card performance
to "ondemand" (I forgot the exact name of this mode in ATI control
center) and cpu mode to ondemand, and notebook isn`t hot, fans not
spinning (if I not start flash, games or some similar app with high cpu
load). So with fglrx I can use notebook from battery 1,5-2 hours and
it`s not hot, but with opensource driver battery of notebook is down in
50 minutes, fan is olways on, it noise is loud, and notebook is very
hot.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 752255] [NEW] [q45, maverick regression] second montior only available a few minutes delayed after system start

2011-04-05 Thread iroli
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

This is a regression from maverick.
I have a dual monitor setup (2x DVI).
The second monitor is not available after a system start. xrand does not show
it either.
A few minutes after working (gnome classic), the monitor is detected and
enabled automatically.
Everything is fine then (except the desktop icon mess of course).

I can't find anything regarding output HDMI2 in Xorg.0.log.

2011-04-05 Thread Chris McCormick
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 11.04 (Natty)

I was hoping to activate the drivers to fully utilize my video card.

What happen instead was upon activating and restarting computer, logged

dock bar. Also when I use the mouse to select an area on the desktop and
drag to other corner. It makes the desktop completely black.

2011-04-05 Thread Kamal Mostafa
apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: xorg

  Natty Beta 2.6.38-8.40 + wine1.0 : Guild Wars crashes X

On same hardware on Maverick (Intel Core i5 with Intel GPU) Guild Wars
under wine1.* works great with winecfg's Direct3D "Allow Pixel Shader"
checkbox enabled. But the same configuration on Natty and wine1.0 makes
Xorg crash (see backtrace below) immediately upon starting Guild Wars.
Switching off "Allow Pixel Shader" resolves the crash, but game frame
rate drops to an unusably slow 2 fps.

Natty Beta 2.6.38-8.40 + wine1.2 : Guild Wars graphics corrupted

With wine1.2, no X crash occurs, but graphics are corrupted when "Allow
Pixel Shader"is enabled. Looks fine (but unusably slow) without "Allow
Pixel Shader". Screenshots of good and bad attached.

Ahhh I didn't realize this was a different bug from the one I filed a
few days ago! Sorry! Launchpad needs a "delete comment" for ones own

I'd like to help, but is there a way to flush my current settings to a

Also, I could have sworn I posted the output of that command. Anywhere,
here it is as of right now. I just updated everything today.

Note that the Guild Wars client can be downloaded freely from

necessary to replicate either problem (the crash, or the graphics

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 752080] [NEW] GuildWars (wine1.0) makes X segfault in libdri2.so

2011-04-05 Thread Kamal Mostafa
Public bug reported:

Alright, thanks. Due to that and since we have the bug registered
upstream I think I'm going to close out this bug report; sounds like the
work to resolve this can go on upstream. Feel free to reopen the bug
report if it results in a patch that you think we should consider to
cherrypick. Otherwise, we'll look forward to getting the fix once we
next merge from upstream in the o-series.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 742880] Re: Unity doesn't work on ATI ES1000 card

2011-04-05 Thread Nico van der Walt
Nagappan, looks like you installed the Catalyst driver. The ES1000 is
not supported with that driver. Only the radeon driver supports it but
only for 2D acceleration. Unity-2d should work fine.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 727979] Re: Screen flicker approx. every 30 seconds

2011-04-05 Thread Bryce Harrington
Upstream says something outside X is probably polling every 30 sec
looking for monitors. This is unnecessary since the kernel
automatically fires events when a monitor gets connected/disconnected.

Best guess is a daemon like upowerd or keventd is running. Look in `ps
aux` to see if you have one of these running, and see if you shut it
down or kill it if the bad behavior stops. If not, look for other
daemons, services, or clients you might be running which could be
polling for monitors and try killing them off one by one to narrow what
is causing the issue for you.

It sounds like something is polling radeon looking for monitors.

Do you have 'upowerd' running? (`ps aux | grep upowerd`) If so, try
stopping or killing it and see if the issue goes away.

2011-04-05 Thread Bryce Harrington
Btw, I notice you had a virtualbox installation failure. You might want
to try removing that from your system to eliminate it as a potential
cause of this problem. (Since it carries its own X stuff, it can
sometimes cause interferences, although it's probably innocent in this
case.)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 735126] Re: [natty] system freezes on boot without disabling KMS

2011-04-05 Thread Bryce Harrington
Hi LGB, thanks for persisting with the additional testing, and figuring
out how to work around the network issue.

Looking at netconkern.log, I agree with your assessment that the failure
occurs well before X starts up. The log is a bit confusing as to what
exactly is failing, however it appears that drm initializes
(successfully apparently), at 19 sec, and then failures begin to occur
when networking is set up:

[ 79.112037] ieee80211 phy0: Failed to initialize wep: -110
[ 243.716037] INFO: task jbd2/sda1-8:263 blocked for more than 120 seconds.

Then various parts of the kernel start failing with errors relating to I
guess memory errors?

It is quite interesting that toggling KMS on or off changes the
behavior. This makes me wonder if perhaps the issue is that the drm
module is leaving the kernel in an inconsistent state, such that
subsequent modules fail.

I've added a task for the kernel, since this appears to be a kernel drm
bug of some sort.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 745304] Re: Graphics corruption after hibernate with Intel GMA 3150 chipset

2011-04-05 Thread Seth Forshee
When trying discovered that on the test machine I was using all kernels
are working now, even ones that didn't work previously. Another machine
that previously exhibited the issue works fine now as well. I guess
something must have been updated in userland that fixed the issue.

I have a third machine that hasn't been updated recently, but after
installing newer kernels onto it I am seeing a hard lockup very early in
boot coming out of hibernate (with or without the i915 patches in
place).

I'll keep trying to test the kernel patches, but I'm very curious what
changed in userspace to fix the problem.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 658458] Re: do-release-upgrade report error on upgrading from ubuntu 10.04 to 10.10

2011-04-05 Thread Neil McLeish
Hi all.
I too am having great difficulty with this.

I have removed the xserver-xorg-video-nouveaux package but to no avail.

These lines appear near the end of the dist-upgrade/main.log:-

2011-03-21 23:53:21,327 DEBUG needServerMode(): run in 'desktop' mode, (because
of key deps for 'ubuntu-desktop')
2011-03-21 23:55:40,470 ERROR Dist-upgrade failed: 'E:Error,
pkgProblemResolver::Resolve generated breaks, this may be caused by held
packages.'
2011-03-21 23:55:40,471 DEBUG abort called

full main.log is attached

It suggests that some packages on my system are causing the problem, but
does not go into any further detail.

Any suggestions would be most welcome.

Very best regards,

Neil.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 727620] Re: [Radeon HD 5650 and 5470] Driver crash during recovery boot and in normal boot (Regression from 2.6.38-3 to -4)

2011-04-05 Thread Dweia
Bryce Harrington wrote in #25 "Upstream would like to see if setting the
video to the radeon/descrete setting in the BIOS configuration makes it
function properly."

Answer: Yes it does. I tried that a while ago already, but can't (don't
want to) use that for regular running, because the radeon-card makes the
laptop-battery ruin out too fast. I read also that there's a
patched/hacked BIOS somewhere that allows to switch off the radeon-card
via BIOS, but if it can be solved with software I'd prefer that ;)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 727979] Re: Screen flicker approx. every 30 seconds

2011-04-05 Thread Bryce Harrington
It is interesting others are seeing similar problems, which may or may
not be the same bug, but for purposes of this bug report we're only
going to focus on Lucas' issue since he is the original reporter.

Sometimes two different X bugs can have symptoms that are
indistinguishable, particularly so with flickers. If you are certain
you have Lucas' bug, stay tuned. If you think there's any chance your
bug might differ it is important that you file a separate bug report,
else it is possible when a fix comes for Lucas, your issue will remain
unfixed.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 727620] Re: [Radeon HD 5650 and 5470] Driver crash during recovery boot and in normal boot (Regression from 2.6.38-3 to -4)

2011-04-05 Thread Dweia
Chris Halse Rogers wrote in #22: "This does look a lot like some bad
interaction between i915/radeon"

I agree - I did some more testing and placed an entry for the radeon-
module into /etc/initramfs-tools/modules, and voilá - no crash! (after
booting into X I can't get back to the text-console, but that's possibly
another issue).

What proves the "bad interaction" even more is: when also placing "i915"
into /etc/initramfs-tools/modules BEFORE "radeon", booting isn't
possible at all any more, but when placing i915 AFTER radeon, booting is
possible, but I got a black screen (as in totally black, that is: no
backlight) until X starts up.

I'll try to get logs of four different initrd-configurations (though I
doubt I'll be able to record the one where the crash occurs already
during running of initrd...)

P.S. off-topic, I knew a cjwatson once - hi Kamion ;-)

(Yes, I do have a script for this)
I am running on "low graphics mode". The above is not too surprising for a
beta, but back to fglrx.

Earlier I reported a bug on this item, then I got an update and this is
  what happened.

  1. Something went wrong with my hard drive and the partition table seems
to be scrambled, however I have a off-line backup system and was able to
  download the beta 1 disk.

  2. After saving as much as I could of my hard disk content, I built a new
boot sector, and repartitioned the disk, then installed
the 11.4 beta1 disk. It sort of failed, but I got up enough to run dpkg from
the boot, and this seemed to clear up the problem. I was able to boot, and it
gave me a look at Unity. Not sure I like it, but time will tell.
  3. Following the usual procedure for drivers, I activated fglrx, which then
wanted a boot, so I did.
  4. On come up, the system hangs, not listening to either keyboard or mouse
(much). I was forced to reboot using SysRq emergency orderly shutdown.
  5. I was able to reboot on Low Grapphics (sans fglrx)

When the fglrx mess first started, characterized by large black areas, I
was able to get a screen shot. I will add the URL for this after I get
back to 10.10 and can place the image on my web pages. This will be
later this afternoon, I suppose, since once this is filed, I am
switching back to my production system.

I hope this helps in various areas, but I really wish AMD would get on
  with it.

Oh, and just in case you wanted the installer facts, here they are:

  john@john-testbedGA-MA78LM-S2H:~$ bin/bugger fglrx-installer
  Description: Ubuntu Natty (development branch)
  Release: 11.04

  Description: Ubuntu Natty (development branch)
  Release: 11.04
N: Unable to locate package fglrx-installer

Hmm, that doesn't seem to be present.

And yes my script is OK

  john@john-testbedGA-MA78LM-S2H:~$ apt-cache policy fglrx-installer
N: Unable to locate package fglrx-installer

-
Good luck on this, the new release is looking interesting.

2011-04-05 Thread Bryce Harrington
Sorry, versions of fglrx prior to 8.40 lack support for the 2.6.38
kernel (and xserver 1.10) shipped in natty.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 747102] Re: package fglrx 2:8.780-0ubuntu2 failed to install/upgrade: fglrx kernel module failed to build

2011-04-05 Thread Bryce Harrington
Looks like it failed attempting to build the 8.780 version of fglrx,
which is what we shipped in maverick, but was building against the natty
kernel.  You should run the 8.40 version of fglrx with the natty kernel;
the older fglrx lacks support for the 2.6.38 kernel.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 748115] Re: package fglrx 2:8.840-0ubuntu1 failed to install/upgrade: fglrx kernel module failed to build

2011-04-05 Thread Bryce Harrington
You appear to have an incompatible version of the linux kernel
installed, version 2.6.39-020639rc1, which is not the kernel we're
shipping in natty, 2.6.38.x.x. -fglrx is only supported on the 2.6.38
kernel in natty so you'd need to move to that kernel if you want to use
fglrx.
