[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 757141] [NEW] Xorg freeze: Try Ubuntu leads to black screen with a white cursor and keyboard issues
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xorg I booted a LiveUSB of the current natty daily ISO. It got to the screen where it asks whether I want to Try or Install Ubuntu. I selected Try. It switched back to the console, then loaded xorg with a cursor in the center of the screen and a black background and stopped. I could move the cursor around with my mouse, but Ctrl-Alt-F1 didn't do anything. I eventually did Alt-Sysrq-R and Alt-Sysrq-K to restart xorg, logged in on gdm, and got to a normal desktop. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 755715] Re: radeon 3870 x2 sometimes gives black screen at startup
Hi Tormod, others, thanks for helping. With sometimes I meant that fail-safe boot does work, but normal booting (with KMS on) is not. The black screen appears right after the initial stage (with the blinking cursor), so it might have something to do with KMS. I can see the screen slightly changing color from black to dark grey a couple of times, and my TV turns entirely green (!!). I did some additional testing and found out that the problem lies with the TV-Out and KMS. I have an old-school CRT television connected with S-video to my videocard. I found out that: - booting with S-video cable connected, TV stand-by or turned on, gives black screen (green on TV). - booting with S-video cable disconnected is succesful. I have now only the main LCD screen, after plugging in the cable again i can use the TV through the Monitors menu. - booting with the GRUB-option nomodeset is also succesful. I will use this as a workaround. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 755136] Re: Unity sidebar does not allow to pin new apps
Thanks for your bug report and help to make ubuntu better. Can you be a little bit more explicit? Like, giving a testcase with: 1. open application application name 2. right click on the launcher and… And so on. I can't reproduce it there despite opening and pinning a lot of applications. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 757544] [NEW] 9.10 upgrade to 10.04 causes LG screen judder
Public bug reported: UK Linux newbie has Shuttle SH55J2 with Intel i3-550, H55 chipset LG Flatron L1710B. Installing Ubuntu 9.10 from magazine CD is fine, monitor is recognised as 'LG Electronics 17' and display is crisp. Upgrading to 10.04 appears to install without a hitch, but display deteriorates now having a permanent judder which is very tiring to view; changing display resolution brings no improvement - some displays are worse. Monitor is now recognised as Goldstar. Upgrading to 10.10, brings no change. Followed comments on forums about amending grub to add 'nomodeset' after 'splash', but found myself dumped in Terminal with no what to do next. Managed to get back to starting position (not sure how), but no further forward on screen judder. Is there anything on the 9.10 CD that I can use to correct things? if so, what and how? Alternatively have Shuttle driver DVD, but content is aimed at Windows (which I don't have). Is there anything there I can use to improve things? [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 752445] [NEW] Intermittent white window contents when maximizing/switching windows
You have been subscribed to a public bug: Binary package hint: compiz Fresh install of Natty Beta. Nvidia graphics card with proprietary driver. Not all the time, but maximizing windows sometimes results in a white window. Sometimes switching between windows (not necessarily maximised) does the same. The window borders are there but the body of the window is white. Resizing the window smaller sometimes makes it redraw. Minimizing other applications sometimes makes it redraw. The white window is most often the focussed window, but sometimes windows behind the focussed window go white too. Once an application has gone white, this seems to encourage other windows to do the same. Minimizing all windows, reactivating the required window and perhaps resizing will bring the window contents back. I don't think this is restricted to specific applications. I've been able to duplicate the problem with Firefox, Thunderbird, Nautilus, Synaptic, Terminal, Geany, Nvidia Settings and others. It's not Unity. If I switch to Classic I get the same problem, although perhaps with slightly less frequency. Switch to Classic with no effects and the problem goes away. So I suspect a combination of Compiz and the Nvidia driver that comes with Natty. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 747484] Re: Synaptics touchpad/touchstick not detected on Dell Latitude E6410
As bug 727259 (affects a Dell M4500) was helped by the fix to bug 754344, I think that means it has an ALPS trackpad. Whereas I think your result with tpconfig means you have a Synaptics trackpad. So I don't think these two are dupes. The workaround I suggested to bug 727259 actually only disables the touchpad during typing: it doesn't help with setting touchpad options and so doesn't disable tap to click or tap and drag. Nonetheless, it helped me. I've put the source and binary here http://dl.dropbox.com/u/3285944 /touchpad-fixup-tool.tgz My own bug 755518 could be related to this one - tpconfig is showing the same firmware. I followed the instructions in https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingTouchpadDetection which advise against marking as duplicates. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-input-synaptics in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/747484 Title: Synaptics touchpad/touchstick not detected on Dell Latitude E6410 ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 758014] [NEW] ubuntu natty beta nvidia regression - maximize white hang
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xorg A fresh install of ubuntu beta from the amd64 daily CD of 20110408 has nvidia display issues on a Dell inspiron 531. The ubuntu-bug attached files are from a parallel 10.10 install, and should only be used for illustrating the hardware situation. The symptom is completely reproducible: boot kernel 2.6.38-8-generic amd64 with the binary nvidia driver, launch a process such as gnome-terminal or firefox, maximize the window. The screen goes to solid white. Un-maximizing reverts to a normal display. After 2-3 maximize/un-maximize cycles the display locks up. Ctrl-Alt-F1 and then Ctrl-Alt-Del results in the expected switch to a terminal and a reboot, so the keyboard is still responsive. This only happens with the binary nvidia driver, not with the open- source nouveau driver. However, the nouveau driver lacks the acceleration needed to run the new unity interface. This is the same hardware (Dell inspiron system unit, HP LCD display) as in bug #757929, but a different problem. (That bug is a kernel oops after a 10.10 - 11.04 upgrade; this problem is a display freeze from a fresh 11.04 install.) [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 748320] Re: Blank screen (no GUI) after installation of NVidia proprietary driver on Sony Vaio Z119GS
** Description changed: Binary package hint: xorg + UPDATED 12 April 2011: NVidia Proprietary Driver Installation Test Case amd64 20110411 Live CD + Nb: See below (under the dashed line) for result(s) of testing on earlier builds. + The NVidia proprietary drivers failed again this week (11 April). The exact results of the test case were: + + 1. Boot stock system on compatible video hardware, using the appropriate open source driver (or -vesa). By default, Ubuntu boots with the open source driver. + RESULT: No problems. In fact the open source driver runs the Unity animations fine. + + 2. Note the contents of /etc/X11/xorg.conf (or simply note absence of the file) + RESULT: The file is absent. + + 3. Go to System : Administration : Hardware Drivers + + 4. Verify that it correctly identifies that a video driver is available for this hardware + RESULT: The system nominates NVIDIA accelerated graphics driver (version -current) (as is expected/normal) + + 5. Install the recommended driver. + RESULT: No problem. + + 6. Verify that a *.ko file is installed properly for the correct kernel(s) + find /lib/modules/ -type f -ls -iname '*.ko' | grep -E /nvidia-current.ko|/nvidia-173.ko|/nvidia-96.ko|/fglrx.ko + Check that the timestamp of the file is correct. + RESULT: 13631639 13248 -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 13562104 Apr 12 05:55 /lib/modules/2.6.38-8-generic/updates/dkms/nvidia-current.ko + + 7. Note new contents of /etc/X11/xorg.conf. It should list the name of the proprietary driver as a minimum. + RESULTING CONTENTS OF xorg.conf: + Section “Device” + Identifier “Default Device” + Option “NoLogo” “True” + EndSection + i.e. xorg.conf FAILED to show the name of the proprietary driver. + + 8. Reboot + + 9. Verify the GUI display comes up + RESULT: The Speed setting LED fails to come on. A message appears saying that I do not have the required hardware to run Unit. A basic gnome desktop loads up with no Unity dock. + + + 10. Verify the proprietary driver loaded + grep -E LoadModule:.*\nvidia|fglrx\ /var/log/Xorg.0.log + RESULT: No output + So, it appears that the nvidia driver did NOT in fact load. + + After this, I typed: + ls -al /var/crash + This showed an empty directory, i.e. no apport or crash files are there. + I then typed: + + apport-cli xorg + so that I could submit this bug accompanied by an apport file. + apport.xorg.a7_IWP.apport + + I then tried changing xorg.conf to what it should be (so the proprietary + driver would load at next boot). i.e.: + + Section Screen + Identifier Default Screen + DefaultDepth 24 + EndSection + + Section Module + Load glx + EndSection + + Section Device + Identifier Default Device + Driver nvidia + Option NoLogo True + EndSection + + After rebooting, there is a splash screen, but then I am left with a + terminal. This time it show’s each of the steps in starting up. The + last step is “* Checking battery state” and then it gets stuck. + Once again, no GUI was possible. + + I pressed Ctrl-Alt-F1 and logged in at the tty terminal. + + I typed to verify if the proprietary driver loaded with: + grep -E LoadModule:.*\nvidia|fglrx\ /var/log/Xorg.0.log + RESULT: [ 23.176] (II) LoadModule: “nvidia” + So, it appears that the nvidia driver DID in fact load. + + At this point I created another apport file (with the driver loaded this time): + apport.xorg.UI8mE8.apport + + -- UPDATED 4 April 2011: NVidia Proprietary Driver Installation Test Case amd64 20110404 Live CD - Nb: See below (under the dashed line) for result(s) of testing on earlier builds. The NVidia proprietary drivers failed again this week (4 April), although the results from each question in the Installation test were a little different. I understand that in order to get the driver to work on a Sony Vaio Z series the ‘trick’ is to get the green “Speed” LED to light up (just above the keyboard). This LED has failed to light up during all my trials, including this week’s. When this LED fails to light up, this means the computer has failed to ‘switch on’ the NVidia GPU. The computer defaults to an onboard Intel graphics chip. Adam from www.voip-x.co.uk/files/adam made a bandaid/hacked solution by creating a custom kernel 2.6.28-10-vaioz. The only purpose of this kernel is to turn on the green light (i.e. turn on the NVidia GPU) at first boot. After doing this, Grub appears again and you can select the ‘proper’ Ubuntu kernel (2.6.38-7-generic) and boot in to a GUI where the NVidia proprietary driver works perfectly. So if some cluey Ubuntu dev(s) could work out how to switch on the NVidia GPU (and the green LED), I think our problem would be solved! Here’s my results from the Installation test case for the 20110404 Live Desktop amd64 CD on my Sony Vaio Z119GS. I have attached
