Looks like you also have virtualbox installed... hrm [ 239.456577] warning: `VirtualBox' uses 32-bit capabilities (legacy support in use) hmm... well I can't really say whether the graphics driver failure is related to the wireless driver, or perhaps some conflict with the virtualbox driver, or what, but your system looks a bit sketchy in general. We have a few other arrandale related bug reports, and perhaps one of those already covers the fault you encountered. I'd suggest focusing on solving your wireless issue first, and if that doesn't square away the video driver (or if we don't get the video freeze solved via one of the other bugs), then please re-file a new bug report and we'll take it from there. Meanwhile... if you want to just ignore the wireless problem for now, you could try installing a newer upstream kernel, as I've noticed they've done some further Ironlake/Arrandale development work. We've got .debs you can use at http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/. Probably best to start with one of the v2.6.39 kernels. The drm-intel- next-proposed kernel is a snapshot of Intel's experimental tree and has the absolute latest bleeding edge stuff, but it can be a bit chancy so YMMV running that. ** Changed in: xserver-xorg-video-intel (Ubuntu) Status: Incomplete = Invalid -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-intel in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/765432 Title: [arrandale] GPU lockup (ESR: 0x0001 IPEHR: 0x08914160) - broadcomm wireless conflict? ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 763688] Re: [915GM] S-video output doesn't work in Natty (i386)
Can you attach the output of xrandr --verbose from Maverick when it's working. I'd like to see the /var/log/Xorg.0.log from that case as well. Also, on natty please turn on drm debugging. You can do this using the xdiagnose utility, it's the first checkbox in the dialog. Reboot and then reproduce the bug, and then run 'dmesg dmesg.txt' and attach it to this bug report. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-intel in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/763688 Title: [915GM] S-video output doesn't work in Natty (i386) ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 767102] Re: [arrandale] GPU lockup (ESR: 0x00000001 IPEHR: 0x08000020)
It was the first time for this sort of failure, but it actually wasn't a system freeze: I could switch to virtual consoles and back, but no amount of trying to restart unity would work; each time compiz would crash. I was left with no ability to type in X, and no window management. Hence the lack of comment in the original description: the best I could do to satisfy Launchpad's demand for a description was to copy and paste the pre-filled summary with my touchpad. I did resort to restarting my system after that, as it was due for a restart according to update-manager. [And then it was late so I went to bed and forgot to follow up on this bug to explain in more detail.] I don't recall any failures like this one on maverick. I got freezes only very rarely on maverick, but did sometimes get *extremely* slow X, where input would take many seconds to have any effect (and IIRC CPU spinning at 100%). IIRC that was triggered by switching between different X sessions (e.g. between the guest login and my login).. On reproducing: so far it's just happened once, for no obvious reason, so I'd have to say “randomly”. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-intel in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/767102 Title: [arrandale] GPU lockup (ESR: 0x0001 IPEHR: 0x0820) ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 766395] Re: multiple monitors fail to display
Wow, sorry you're having so much trouble with getting the projector to work with natty, that sucks. However, what we need for diagnosing these kinds of problems are detailed steps and logs collected along the way showing what went wrong where. Generally, for X what works best is if you can reproduce the issues using just the xrandr command line tool ('man xrandr' has some examples and usage details). This is because Fn+F8 goes through a few service layers (kernel, acpi, gnome-settings-daemon, etc.) which X doesn't really have control over, and themselves can be bugged. Here are a few tools that may help you in your investigation: * The xdiagnose utility can be used to turn on graphics debug messages (the first checkbox in the dialog). These messages show up in your 'dmesg' output * Running 'xrandr' by itself can help indicate what monitors X thinks are enabled, and it shows you what resolution, refresh rate, and so on that it uses. * Sometimes testing newer X or kernel bits can bring a fix. - The xorg-edgers PPA has new X bits - New bleeding edge upstream kernel snapshots can be found at http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/ Good luck! ** Changed in: xserver-xorg-video-intel (Ubuntu) Status: New = Invalid -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-intel in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/766395 Title: multiple monitors fail to display ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

Ah thanks, you mentioned you were due to reboot; was that because you'd just done a system upgrade? I wonder if that could have triggered the freeze. Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 761632] Re: crash on startup before any activities
When I first installed Natty I got this error message on every boot up, however the machine did not totally lock up. When I installed the updates the next day, it booted normally without error messages and has had no problems since. It looks like something in the updates fixed the problem. Also, this laptop has had a hardware problem with the video card, probably thermally related as it seems to work fine until you load up the video card with say a full screen movie. When the video card works hard and heats up I will get a video tear or vertical strips and a HARD lock up requiring a hard shutdown and reboot. This problem on boot did not cause a hard lockup and occurred on the boot when the video card had not yet been doing much, so I did not think it a high probability it was the same problem. Working fine after the daily Update Manager run. Did not have similar error messages with Maverick, but did have the occasional video lockup in both Maverick and Windows XP, which is what led me to believe I have a thermal problem with the video card and not a software driver issue. Those never threw an error code because they hard locked the computer. Interestingly have not had a hard video lockup since installing Natty, even when trying to push it with full screen videos. May have to try Passmark or some similar video test in Linux. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 768184] [NEW] [i965gm] GPU lockup (ESR: 0x00000001 IPEHR: 0x01800020)
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel Crash which required reboot. The crash itself is described in https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/768176 and this is after I persuaded apport-gpu-error-intel.py to run. My screen went entirely black (both laptop screen and second monitor). Switching to a VC did not show anything on screen. At first I could still hear sounds from running applications, but eventually (after ~10 seconds) they stopped. I had to powercycle the machine to get control back. The system problem detected apport dialog offered to let me file a bug, but then I got another crash dialog saying apport-gpu-error- intel.py closed unexpectedly. bryceh aquarius, can you tell me is this a recently upgraded natty from maverick or have you been running natty for a while? aquarius I've been running natty for a while bryceh have you had other gpu freezes since upgrading or is this the first? aquarius since about, um, November. This isn't the first, but it's about the third, and they've all happened in the last week or so. bryceh do you know if you can reproduce this freeze at will? aquarius I think. (I've been having compiz-locking-up-but-I-can-switch-to-a-VC hangs for a long time; this is different.) I can't reproduce it, sorry -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-intel in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/768184 Title: [i965gm] GPU lockup (ESR: 0x0001 IPEHR: 0x01800020) ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 754777] Re: [sandybridge-m-gt2] GPU lockup (Blitter IPEHR: 0x13000002, Render IPEHR: 0x02000006)
Hi Bryce, thank you for your help. I had reported more than 5 bug reports of this issue ( I don't actually remember the numbers, and some of them were marked as it affected me, did not reported as new thread). Here is another bug that I report: https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/761957 The freeze happened on my laptop almost every bootup when I use 'intel' driver (means there is no /etc/X11/xorg.conf). My computer is a brand new bought HP laptop with Intel Sandy Bridge I5 2410m CPU and an integrated GPU (HD3000). The old Ubuntu release did not support Sandy Bridge GPU (refer to http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_itempx=ODk2OA ), so I fresh installed Natty. Sure I can reproduce the freeze, but I can not confirm which software caused this problem. Usually it happened with LibreOffice, Firefox, Chrome, gnome-terminal, gedit. Sometime when GUI frozen, my mouse point can still moving but keyboard is dead. I like Gnome classic (with 3D effect) so it's sure no Unity process running. I will try to disable 3D effect and test the old driver and new PPA driver when I back home, then it's possible to remote login and kill X process when the lockup happened. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-intel in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/754777 Title: [sandybridge-m-gt2] GPU lockup (Blitter IPEHR:0x1302, Render IPEHR: 0x0206) ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 727594] Re: [i915gm] GPU lockup (ESR: 0x00000001 IPEHR: 0x02000004)
My eeepc is running ok after installing the backport from the fig ppa. I used the system for several hours last night in google chrome and again this morning. Previously the bug could take all day to show up. Scrolling is a little laggy. However this evening I am seeing slight font corruption in the letter p in the console and gedit. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-intel in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/727594 Title: [i915gm] GPU lockup (ESR: 0x0001 IPEHR: 0x0204) ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

The system has just displayed the error message, it didn't lock up. I haven't experienced this bug in Maverick. Also, the S-video output was simply black screen, though the desktop got wider in Compiz (see bug #763688). I haven't tried to reproduce it yet but I will do it ASAP. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-intel in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/763659 Title: [i915gm] GPU lockup (ESR: 0x0011 PGTBL_ER: 0x0100 IPEHR: 0x0100) ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
