[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 780961] [NEW] Natty Xorg crashes on Thinkpad X201 (i915 driver) during screen updates
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xorg Ever since upgrading to natty a couple days ago, I've been having problems with Xorg crashing. I got a traceback (already attached, gdmlog1), which suggested something related to pthreads, so I tried disabling hyperthreading and all but one core in BIOS. This reduced the frequency of crashing from about once per 10 minutes to once per 2 days. I don't know if it's specific to the intel driver, or if it is a more general issue. As far as steps for reproducing the issue... I'm not exactly sure. This is a description of a typical session: 1. Log in via gdm. I'm using sawfish, with a custom Xsession. 2. Start a few programs. I ran xchat, chrome, midori, a few instances of dillo, and a few instances if urxvt (client/server mode, not independent instances). 3. Trigger a few window redraws, by changing desktops or moving windows around. I triggered these actions via key shortcuts, generally a few times in a fraction of a second. Result: Once in a while, step 3 will cause an Xorg crash. The frequency increases quite a bit with SMP enabled (2 cores + HT, so 4 logical CPUs). [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 478149] Re: White windows after resume from suspend, Karmic 9.10
I can confirm I have this issue but only since installing natty. Drivers worked fine with maverick. Makes me kinda wish that I hadn't updated. Okay so the issues is a little different for me though but not by much and I think it is the same issue but manifest in a different way. For me it is not after suspend however is reproducible always. Once I have about 4 windows, if two are maximised then I cannot maximise any more else they go white on me. They stop being white if I shrink them down to about 1/4 the screen then I can re-expand them to about 1/2 any more and they white out. Ping me if you want me to run any commands or diagnostic tools. I think natty is great... just this one issue. -Display- Resolution : 1280x800 pixels Vendor : The X.Org Foundation Version : 1.10.1 -Monitors- Monitor 0 : 1280x800 pixels -Extensions- BIG-REQUESTS Composite DAMAGE DOUBLE-BUFFER DPMS DRI2 GLX Generic Event Extension GestureExtension MIT-SCREEN-SAVER MIT-SHM NV-CONTROL NV-GLX RANDR RECORD RENDER SECURITY SHAPE SYNC X-Resource XC-MISC XFIXES XFree86-DGA XFree86-VidModeExtension XINERAMA XINERAMA XInputExtension XKEYBOARD XTEST XVideo XVideo-MotionCompensation -OpenGL- Vendor : NVIDIA Corporation Renderer: GeForce 7150M / nForce 630M/PCI/SSE2/3DNOW! Not really an answer as I need to use my screens at max res ie laptop=1920 and Samsung ext LCD=1600x1200, but this must be a clue to what is wrong ? [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 765850] Re: unable to rotate display left or right
This bug is caused by a xorg commit in December which was reverted in the 1.7 branch [1] but not in the 1.9-branch of xorg-xserver. A bug [2] is filed on the xorg bug tracker but it has no responses, except from the reporter that confirms that a revert of the commit fixes the situation. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 780961] Re: Natty Xorg crashes on Thinkpad X201 (i915 driver) during screen updates
FWIW, it crashed again about 10 minutes after I filed this. My session lasted about 30 minutes, even with SMP disabled, so I'm not so sure SMP matters. I may have just been lucky when my session lasted for nearly 2 days before. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 768581] Re: Unity froze when anything else went fullscreen (even screensaver) for more than 30 minutes
I have been trying to get reproduce the bug to capture dmesg, i915_error_state and even dtraces from my gdm session, but I am not sure what triggers it yet. So far, it seems that it freezes when the screensaver was running for some time BECAUSE IT HAD TURNED MY SCREEN OFF due to energy policy... I had since disengaged the energy control option to never turn my screen off again, so far it has not frozen my system again. I suspect that this could be the root cause, but I am not sure how to prove it, or what packages could be involved to further the investigation. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 710144] Re: Xsession: unable to launch X session --- not found; falling back to default session.
Almost. The process which logs you in to your X session (I guess it is kdm, but I'm not entirely sure) calls the Xsession script which creates your actual session. That script expects either one or zero parameters: The name of the session to use. If no parameter is given, it assumes you want to use the special session with the name default which falls back to whatever the default session is on your system. Now the bug is that, due to some misconfiguration, your session name is invalid. Afterwards, instead of calling Xsession without any parameter, it is still called with a single parameter: The empty string . Xsession tries to map this string to a session name, gets confused, throws up a nasty xdialog and falls back to default. So we've got two bugs here: * Xsession doesn't handle an empty session string (which can mean only default IMHO) gracefully. * Whoever calls Xsession should not use an empty string but leave the first parameter if the user wants the default session. I think the bug is in kdm, but I'm not sure so I don't know where to report it upstream. The (now tested) patch I posted before fixes Xsession to handle kdm's (?) odd view of a default session. ** Tags added: patch -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/710144 Title: Xsession: unable to launch X session --- not found; falling back to default session. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 737891] Re: [Arrandale] gnome-display-properties unable to correctly enable monitors connected to VGA
I guess I am affected by this bug too. I have a Dell D820 with Intel Mobile GM965/GL960 Integrated Graphics Controller. I use a docking station to which 2 identical monitors HP LA1951g are hooked, one DVI, one VGA. The monitors native resolution is 1280 x 1024 at 60 Hz. With Maverick I had to create a xorg.conf file to get both to work at native resolution in extended desktop setup (so virtual screen of 2560 x 1024) - but at least it worked fine (LVDS was shut off). The fact that compiz was off didn't bother me at all. With Natty ... oh boy ! Not a chance (all effect were off). Natty seems to ignore xorg.conf file completely. Moreover, it's not even offering/detecting the native 1280 x 1024 resolution on the VGA display (?!?!?) any more. The max resolution available on it with Natty is 1024 x 768 ... I am also hit by bug #745112. The Intel chipset video support is so badly broken on Natty that I had to go back to Maverick. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-intel in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/737891 Title: [Arrandale] gnome-display-properties unable to correctly enable monitors connected to VGA ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 745112] Re: [arrandale] desktop is messed up (goes black) when laptop is docked with two external 1920x1200 monitors (x86_64)
Intel D820 here with Intel Mobile GM965/GL960 Integrated Graphics Controller. I use a docking station with two identical HP LA1951g monitors attached, one VGA, one DVI with a native resolution of 1280 x 1024 @ 60 Hz. First, Natty failed to detect the native resolution of VGA monitor. It can only see 1024 x 768 (all effects were off). Maverick had no problems with seeing 1280 x 1024 (though have used a xorg.conf file). Even when docked and with the lid shut, the laptop still displays on the LVDS only (?!?) - and with a weird resolution too. Attempts to shut off the LVDS and force image on the external display leads to black screen on all three of them followed by a system freeze (CTRL+ALT+POWER is the only way to reboot it). Had no such problems whatsoever with Maverick so it must be a Natty bug. Have tried the xorg-edgers drivers and used the same xorg.conf file from Maverick to no avail. Since in its current status Natty is completely unusable, I had to put Maverick back (which I am using to write this post). Another thing: is it just me or the fonts did look a lot smoother and clearer in Maverick than Natty ? -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-intel in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/745112 Title: [arrandale] desktop is messed up (goes black) when laptop is docked with two external 1920x1200 monitors (x86_64) ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 98783] Re: MASTER: memory leak
Closing this one, since 1.10.1 in natty has all the memleaks fixed that were found with analyzer tools. When the Xorg process shows taking a lot of memory, it's usually a rogue client or the display driver leaking, and the xserver is caching pixmap memory. Let me attach another log of segfault and the output of dmesg. It happened shortly after I changed the screen configuration between a single monitor setup and a dual monitor setup back and forth a few times using the xrandr command in a gnome-terminal. Again, there was no error in /sys/kernel/debug/dri/0/i915_error_state. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 297143] Re: Xorg eats processor cycles while waiting for slow Internet
I get similar 12% CPU utilization from both Xorg and thunderbird/firefox. I'm using Ubuntu 11.04, Thunderbird/3.1.10. In Thunderbird the problem doesn't happen from the progress bar (which I guess is GTK Theme dependent) but from the rotating 'hourglass' in the top-left corner at the top of the 'Inbox' tab. Not sure either what this waiting signal is supposed to do, at it seems to get stuck waiting randomly on some selected type of messages. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/297143 Title: Xorg eats processor cycles while waiting for slow Internet ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 760632] Re: Resizing Konsole crashes the whole system
FWIW here is the response I received from what nVidia laughingly describes as Customer Care:- Hello, Thank you for contacting NVIDIA Customer Care. This problem has already been reported to NVIDIA Engineering (as you know) and is under investigation. Please check for the fix in a future driver. Unfortunately there is currently no schedule I can provide. Let me know if any more questions. Best regards, Mike NVIDIA Customer Care So there you have it folks - nVidia Customer Care that is about as much use as a chocolate teapot! Public bug reported: I am struggling to learn exactly the technical side of ubuntu - all I know is that I was upgrading when this happened. My system was low on power if, that helps.
