[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 780961] [NEW] Natty Xorg crashes on Thinkpad X201 (i915 driver) during screen updates

2011-05-11 Thread Selene Scriven
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

Ever since upgrading to natty a couple days ago, I've been having
problems with Xorg crashing. I got a traceback (already attached,
gdmlog1), which suggested something related to pthreads, so I tried
disabling hyperthreading and all but one core in BIOS. This reduced the
frequency of crashing from about once per 10 minutes to once per 2 days.
I don't know if it's specific to the intel driver, or if it is a more
general issue.

As far as steps for reproducing the issue... I'm not exactly sure. This is a
description of a typical session:
1. Log in via gdm. I'm using sawfish, with a custom Xsession.
2. Start a few programs. I ran xchat, chrome, midori, a few instances of
dillo, and a few instances if urxvt (client/server mode, not independent
instances).
3. Trigger a few window redraws, by changing desktops or moving windows around.
I triggered these actions via key shortcuts, generally a few times in a
fraction of a second.

Result: Once in a while, step 3 will cause an Xorg crash. The
frequency increases quite a bit with SMP enabled (2 cores + HT, so 4
logical CPUs).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 478149] Re: White windows after resume from suspend, Karmic 9.10

2011-05-11 Thread William Duyck
I can confirm I have this issue but only since installing natty. Drivers
worked fine with maverick. Makes me kinda wish that I hadn't updated.

Okay so the issues is a little different for me though but not by much
and I think it is the same issue but manifest in a different way. For me
it is not after suspend however is reproducible always. Once I have
about 4 windows, if two are maximised then I cannot maximise any more
else they go white on me. They stop being white if I shrink them down to
about 1/4 the screen then I can re-expand them to about 1/2 any more and
they white out.

Ping me if you want me to run any commands or diagnostic tools. I think
natty is great... just this one issue.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 576288] Re: second screen in dualhead setup doesn't refresh properly until reconfigured

2011-05-11 Thread Geoff
I tried Option EXAPixmaps off, but with no change. However, further
experimentation has revealed that if you use Monitor Preferences to set
both monitors to 1280x1024, the screens both behave perfectly - no
trails, no weird colour blocks, everything properly refreshed.

Not really an answer as I need to use my screens at max res ie
laptop=1920 and Samsung ext LCD=1600x1200, but this must be a clue to
what is wrong ? Looks like maybe a video memory addressing problem ?
Can anyone suggest settings that might be tweaked to try to get round
this issue please ?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 765850] Re: unable to rotate display left or right

2011-05-11 Thread Sindre
This bug is caused by a xorg commit in December which was reverted in
the 1.7 branch [1] but not in the 1.9-branch of xorg-xserver.

A bug [2] is filed on the xorg bug tracker but it has no responses,
except from the reporter that confirms that a revert of the commit fixes
the situation.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 780961] Re: Natty Xorg crashes on Thinkpad X201 (i915 driver) during screen updates

2011-05-11 Thread Selene Scriven
FWIW, it crashed again about 10 minutes after I filed this. My session
lasted about 30 minutes, even with SMP disabled, so I'm not so sure SMP
matters. I may have just been lucky when my session lasted for nearly 2
days before.

This has been triggered by changing desktops (ctrl+arrow switches to a
desktop in that direction), and by moving a window with the keyboard
(hyper+arrow to move the current window in that direction until it hits
something). I don't recall any other specific actions which immediately
preceded the crash.

According to a hint by Paul de Vries

the nVidia drivers. I took 270.41.06 from ppa:ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates. I

Not that this solves the issue, aparently, but I am confused as to why i

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 768581] Re: Unity froze when anything else went fullscreen (even screensaver) for more than 30 minutes

2011-05-11 Thread PresuntoRJ
I have been trying to get reproduce the bug to capture dmesg,
i915_error_state and even dtraces from my gdm session, but I am not sure
what triggers it yet.

So far, it seems that it freezes when the screensaver was running for
some time BECAUSE IT HAD TURNED MY SCREEN OFF due to energy policy...

I had since disengaged the energy control option to never turn my screen
off again, so far it has not frozen my system again. I suspect that this
could be the root cause, but I am not sure how to prove it, or what
packages could be involved to further the investigation.

It also seems to happen only on my systems with intel video boards
(Mobile GM965/GL960 Lenovo Laptop and Mobile 945GME Express Asus
netbook).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 710144] Re: Xsession: unable to launch X session --- not found; falling back to default session.

2011-05-11 Thread Malte S. Stretz
Almost. The process which logs you in to your X session (I guess it is
kdm, but I'm not entirely sure) calls the Xsession script which creates
your actual session. That script expects either one or zero parameters:
The name of the session to use. If no parameter is given, it assumes you
want to use the special session with the name default which falls back
to whatever the default session is on your system.

Now the bug is that, due to some misconfiguration, your session name is
invalid. Afterwards, instead of calling Xsession without any parameter,
it is still called with a single parameter: The empty string .
Xsession tries to map this string to a session name, gets confused,
throws up a nasty xdialog and falls back to default.

So we've got two bugs here:
* Xsession doesn't handle an empty session string (which can mean only
default IMHO) gracefully.
* Whoever calls Xsession should not use an empty string but leave the first
parameter if the user wants the default session. I think the bug is in kdm, but
I'm not sure so I don't know where to report it upstream.

The (now tested) patch I posted before fixes Xsession to handle kdm's
(?) odd view of a default session.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 771837] Re: xorg died (gracefully to login) but without ado

2011-05-11 Thread PresuntoRJ
I have been trying to get reproduce the bug to capture dmesg,
i915_error_state and even dtraces from my gdm session, but I am not sure
what triggers it yet.

So far, it seems that it freezes when the screensaver is about to run,
when idle for some time.

I had since disengaged the screensaver, and the energy control option to
never turn my screen off again, so far it has not frozen or logged out
my system again. I suspect that this could be the root cause, but I am
not sure how to prove it, or what packages could be involved to further
the investigation.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 780961] Re: Natty Xorg crashes on Thinkpad X201 (i915 driver) during screen updates

2011-05-11 Thread Selene Scriven
Woot, a couple more crashes now. I don't know if it matters, but it
seems that every crash today happened immediately after pressing Ctrl-
Left or Hyper-Left... not right, up, or down, even though I do those
just as often.

I just found Bug 727594, and I suspect this may be a dupe of that. I'm
going to try the fix released there and report back with results (which
could take a few days).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 780778] [NEW] vlc menus do not stay on top

2011-05-11 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Binary package hint: vlc

When playing a DVD in vlc if I right click on the screen the menus are
immediately drawn over by the playing DVD. If I move my mouse over the
menu (which I cannot see) then as each item is highlighted it becomes
briefly visible before being again drawn over by the next frame of the
playing DVD. It is as though the Menu and the DVD are being drawn at the
same z-order.

Using Ubuntu 11.04, default desktop, desktop effects are turned off.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 780778] Re: vlc menus do not stay on top

2011-05-11 Thread Rémi Denis-Courmont

overlays the video on top of everything. You can work around it using
another video output plugin (but video rendering will be slower).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 737891] Re: [Arrandale] gnome-display-properties unable to correctly enable monitors connected to VGA

2011-05-11 Thread Obi1Kenobi
I guess I am affected by this bug too. I have a Dell D820 with Intel
Mobile GM965/GL960 Integrated Graphics Controller. I use a docking
station to which 2 identical monitors HP LA1951g are hooked, one DVI,
one VGA. The monitors native resolution is 1280 x 1024 at 60 Hz.

With Maverick I had to create a xorg.conf file to get both to work at
native resolution in extended desktop setup (so virtual screen of 2560
x 1024) - but at least it worked fine (LVDS was shut off). The fact that
compiz was off didn't bother me at all.

With Natty ... oh boy ! Not a chance (all effect were off). Natty seems
to ignore xorg.conf file completely. Moreover, it's not even
offering/detecting the native 1280 x 1024 resolution on the VGA display
(?!?!?) any more. The max resolution available on it with Natty is 1024
x 768 ...

I am also hit by bug #745112.

The Intel chipset video support is so badly broken on Natty that I had
to go back to Maverick.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 745112] Re: [arrandale] desktop is messed up (goes black) when laptop is docked with two external 1920x1200 monitors (x86_64)

2011-05-11 Thread Obi1Kenobi
Intel D820 here with Intel Mobile GM965/GL960 Integrated Graphics
Controller. I use a docking station with two identical HP LA1951g
monitors attached, one VGA, one DVI with a native resolution of 1280 x
1024 @ 60 Hz.

First, Natty failed to detect the native resolution of VGA monitor. It
can only see 1024 x 768 (all effects were off). Maverick had no problems
with seeing 1280 x 1024 (though have used a xorg.conf file).

Even when docked and with the lid shut, the laptop still displays on the
LVDS only (?!?) - and with a weird resolution too. Attempts to shut off
the LVDS and force image on the external display leads to black screen
on all three of them followed by a system freeze (CTRL+ALT+POWER is the
only way to reboot it).

Had no such problems whatsoever with Maverick so it must be a Natty bug.
Have tried the xorg-edgers drivers and used the same xorg.conf file from
Maverick to no avail.

Since in its current status Natty is completely unusable, I had to put
Maverick back (which I am using to write this post).

Another thing: is it just me or the fonts did look a lot smoother and
clearer in Maverick than Natty ?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 98783] Re: MASTER: memory leak

2011-05-11 Thread Timo Aaltonen
Closing this one, since 1.10.1 in natty has all the memleaks fixed that
were found with analyzer tools.

When the Xorg process shows taking a lot of memory, it's usually a rogue
client or the display driver leaking, and the xserver is caching pixmap
memory. This is not a bug in the xserver, and should be filed against
the client or the driver.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 780809] Re: [natty] sporadic crashes with segmentation fault (intel GM45)

2011-05-11 Thread Jae-hyeon Park
Let me attach another log of segfault and the output of dmesg. It
happened shortly after I changed the screen configuration between a
single monitor setup and a dual monitor setup back and forth a few times
using the xrandr command in a gnome-terminal. Again, there was no error
in /sys/kernel/debug/dri/0/i915_error_state. Before this, the computer
had been resumed from a tuxonice hibernation.

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: xorg

Xserver crashes after use of a few days, with a few suspend and resume
cycles in between. I use the ubuntu kernel source 2.6.38-8.42 with the
patch of tuxonice 3.2 applied. I don't know yet whether or not tuxonice
has something to do with the crash. No error is found in
/sys/kernel/debug/dri/0/i915_error_state. One of the log files
transferred by ubuntu-bug has the backtrace.

I did not have this problem before update to natty.

Maybe related to the above segfault, there was a problem of a hung GPU
on a separate occasion. gdm log for this case is also attached. I am

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 780809] Re: [natty] sporadic crashes with segmentation fault (intel GM45)

2011-05-11 Thread Jae-hyeon Park
** Attachment added: dmesg when the above segfault happened

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-intel/+bug/780809/+attachment/2124478/+files/dmesg.20110511

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: xorg

Xserver crashes after use of a few days, with a few suspend and resume
cycles in between. I use the ubuntu kernel source 2.6.38-8.42 with the
patch of tuxonice 3.2 applied. I don't know yet whether or not tuxonice
has something to do with the crash. No error is found in
/sys/kernel/debug/dri/0/i915_error_state. One of the log files
transferred by ubuntu-bug has the backtrace. I did not have this
  problem before update to natty.

Maybe related to the above segfault, there was a problem of a hung GPU
- on a separate occasion. gdm log for this case is also attached. I am
- not sure if this hanging is related to bug #727594 since my chipset is
- newer than those that are known to cause lockups.
+ on a separate occasion. gdm log for this case is also attached. At
+ this time, I did not examine /sys/kernel/debug/dri/0/i915_error_state.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 373516] Re: xorg doesn't recognize the non-ASCII variant of character ” in xorg.conf

Closing as wontfix.

It's a configuration file with a specific syntax. If you need to edit it
by hand, you should use that syntax, and not blindly copypaste something
from the internets.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 400374] Re: X server freezes while the application is executing XQueryPointer

2011-05-11 Thread Chris Halse Rogers
So, this is not an X bug. XGrabServer prevents requests from any other
X connection from being processed.

It's probably not a Gdk bug either, as it looks like it needs to do
something that can't reasonably be pushed into the server with a stable
state.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 194760] Re: MASTER: EDID fail

2011-05-11 Thread Fred
I am using Nvidia proprietary device driver.
Maybe it doesn't get EDID because it doesn't support XRandR?

@James, aha, as I suspected. Thanks for checking that. Those
interested in seeing development towards a fix for this issue can focus
on that branch.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 760632] Re: Resizing Konsole crashes the whole system

2011-05-11 Thread intelliboy
Following Szymon's post earlier, i downgraded my xserver and the nvidia
drivers and everything is working fine. I had to go thru the trouble of
pinning the packages in synaptic and then also holding them in dpkg
separately just to make sure i don't accidently upgrade them.

Considering the severity of this bug and the fact that it may take a
while before it gets fixed, it might be worthwhile to set up a ppa that
allows downgrading xorg for natty with the relevant packages.

2011-05-11 Thread Remy
Hi All,

I had 10.10 running with nvidia drivers installed for GeForce GTX 460

I upgrade to 11.04 using alternative CD and select NO for take latest
packages from INTERNET.

After installation completed, I installed the nvidia drivers from
Additional Drivers and restarted the system . I got unity working.

Thereafter install 2.6.38-8-generic-pae kernel and after restart I lost
unity.

For me the problem occurred only after installing 2.6.38-8 kernel.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 297143] Re: Xorg eats processor cycles while waiting for slow Internet

2011-05-11 Thread skhawam
I get similar 12% CPU utilization from both Xorg and thunderbird/firefox. I'm
using Ubuntu 11.04, Thunderbird/3.1.10.
In Thunderbird the problem doesn't happen from the progress bar (which I guess
is GTK Theme dependent) but from the rotating 'hourglass' in the top-left
corner at the top of the 'Inbox' tab. Not sure either what this waiting signal
is supposed to do, at it seems to get stuck waiting randomly on some selected
type of messages.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 760632] Re: Resizing Konsole crashes the whole system

2011-05-11 Thread mr.goose
FWIW here is the response I received from what nVidia laughingly
describes as Customer Care:-

Hello,

Thank you for contacting NVIDIA Customer Care.

This problem has already been reported to NVIDIA Engineering (as you
know) and is under investigation. Please check for the fix in a future
driver.

Unfortunately there is currently no schedule I can provide.

Let me know if any more questions.

Best regards,

Mike
NVIDIA Customer Care

So there you have it folks - nVidia Customer Care that is about as much
use as a chocolate teapot! Something one should definitely bear in
mind next time one purchases any computer hardware, methinks.

Pretty poor show IMHO.

Best wishes, G.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 765850] Re: unable to rotate display left or right

2011-05-11 Thread David Thompson
Just uploaded a patch to the aforementioned bug that would work. I have
packaged it up on my system and I now have my three screens (2 nVidia
cards) with rotation working again. Of course I have to launch compiz on
each, but that's another story.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 781406] [NEW] package fglrx 2:8.840-0ubuntu4 failed to install/upgrade: fglrx kernel module failed to build

2011-05-11 Thread Paula_mp
Public bug reported:

I am struggling to learn exactly the technical side of ubuntu - all I
know is that I was upgrading when this happened. My system was low on
power if, that helps. I've else been having a loot of frozen sessions -
after some googling, it became apparent that this might have something
to do with compiz. Nothing is shown in syslog for the time of the
freeze. Nevertheless, I figure as much info is good for you guys, even
if a freeze didn't happen this time round.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 781406] Re: package fglrx 2:8.840-0ubuntu4 failed to install/upgrade: fglrx kernel module failed to build

2011-05-11 Thread Felix Kuehling
DKMS failed to build the fglrx kernel module for kernel 2.6.39.

Kernel 2.6.39 is not supported by fglrx yet. If you're going to use the
fglrx driver, you'll need to stick with the stock 2.6.38 kernel until
fglrx is updated to support 2.6.39.
