[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 556782] Re: [rs690m] Graphics corruption with ati x1200
It seems to decrease the corruption initally, but doesn't fix the issue. My system was workable for about five minutes or so before corruption became a major issue (but I think it depends more on patterns of usage, though -- if I open more apps, corruption shows up more quickly). Also, running just glxgears, it takes a while (and some dragging of glxgears around the screen) to start in with the corruption. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is a direct subscriber. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/556782 Title: [rs690m] Graphics corruption with ati x1200 ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 791023] [NEW] mouse pointer disappears in ubuntu 11.04
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel I recently upgraded to 10.04 => 10.10 => 11.04, and I have a new problem appearing on 11.04. My mouse cursor disappears after hovering over certain types of items, like the drop-down menus on the gnome system panel, tabs in Firefox, or other items that give tooltips. The cursor reappears when I move the mouse, but it will disappear again if I hover over the wrong items. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 755791] Re: [RS690M] No 3d acceleration in Radeon X1200 with new Gallium r300 / 3d drivers in 11.04
Compiz works after running "export vblank_mode=0", and then "compiz --replace" or logging out and then logging into Unity 3d, for me that works, but very slow. As noted in freedesktop.org, this is just a *workaround* and something is bad at the moment. This issue is not resolved. ** Description changed: + The bug is active also in Freedesktop.org : + https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=37679 + [edit] The bug description, updated: The symptoms: No 3d acceleration (glxgears shows a black window, Unity doesn't start), *but* no fallback into the software-rendering mode (glxinfo reports that the 3d acceleration is working) The hardware: ATI Radeon RS690M X1200 series The version of Ubuntu: Ubuntu 11.04 (final release) [and Maverick also]. The behavior was also observed in Debian and Fedora 15, as noted below (so it seems not to be Ubuntu-specific). The version of xserver-xorg-video-ati: 1:6.14.0-0ubuntu4 (default in Natty). Same problems with the xorg-edgers PPA in Natty Beta2. The software affected: Compiz (doesn't start because requires direct rendering); then, Unity (just the wallpaper or black screen and the mouse pointer). glxgears, Stellarium, Blender, Adobe Flash Player in fullscreen mode and Visual module of Python work if software rendering is forced (but of course they run very very slow). The history of the bug: all worked as expected (out of the box) in 10.04, but in 10.10 the problems started. The workaround was to disable KMS, but now, in Maverick, since the new Gallium driver doesn't have a non-KMS mode, that workaround is not available. This issue was reported when using 11.04 Beta 1 and Beta 2, then, in the descriptions below there are some strange things (xorg crash during startup, software rendering fallback), that don't occur any more. The issue is just the description given here. The exceptions: **sometimes** (??) the 3d acceleration does work as expected, but at the moment there is no way for us to know when it will work or not [help please!]. And, sometimes the 3d acceleration work but is so slow that it seems to be actually software rendering. The workarounds: `vblank_mode=0 glxgears` (or other program) gives - correct 3d acceleration for some applications. Compiz doesn't start with - this method. + correct 3d accelerated output. `export vblank_mode=0` also allows to + start Compiz and 3d acceleration works after running that. That is just + a workaround and the problem is not solved yet. Same thing here. This problem is affecting me since i started using a Dual Head schema (Laptop Monitor + LCD monitor). I'm having this problem since Ubuntu 9.10 and it's really annoying I use dual monitors everyday at work, and when i leave work i put my laptop in sleep mode hoping that when i get in class or home, all my documents, programs and setup is going to be running as it should. Sometimes i get lucky and Ubuntu wakes just fine, but most times it crashes and i end up loosing all my setup and need to open all my programs again. This is bad because the system becomes untrusty... I keep saving my things like crazy hoping that in one of these crashes i do not miss anything unsaved... My setup is a Dell Vostro 1400 (1440x900) + LG LCD 17' Monitor (1280x800). I have tried to solve this problem by switching to a Dell Vostro 1520 (1280x800) but it did'nt seem to work any better :( Every new version of Ubuntu i try to quikly update to check if this problem is fixed but it's not... I noticed that is not fixed even on 11.04... So i wont update, for now. I'm going to wait for 11.10. I'm about to give up my Dual Head setup... Another idea is to switch distro as Suraj have suggested that a newer version of Xorg apparently fixes this. I think i'm going back to Gentoo. It's complicated, and uses a lot of machine power to compile things, but at least i can use newer versions of base software not depending on Ubuntu. Sorry for my bad english, i'm in a hurry. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 556782] Re: [rs690m] Graphics corruption with ati x1200
For Bug #755791, in freedesktop.org (bug report 37679 of freedesktop.org), we found a workaround: running `vblank_mode=0 glxgears` gives correct output of glxgears. At the moment, compiz still doesn't work. Try this workaround in an Ubuntu Classic (or Unity 2d) session, with KMS enabled (since disabling it also disables 3d rendering), that is, a session with 3d acceleration enabled. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 754799] Re: [arrandale] external VGA output doesn't output anything (i686)
Hi Bryce, We've had a development regarding this bug. I applied a BIOS update for this Toshiba machine, in connection with bug 719620 which was also affecting this system. The versions the machine shipped with were: System BIOS Version: 1.40 (dated 12/13/09) EC Version: 1.30 I downloaded an update that was published on May 25th, 2011. This bumps the BIOS to the following versions, as can be verified in the setup screen accessible by hitting F2: System BIOS Version: 3.10 EC Version: 1.90 With this new BIOS, connecting an external screen when the system is up and running works fine and just as expected: the new screen is detected and immediately starts displaying (starts up as additional desktop space to the right of the primary display). Things go back to normal on the primary display when I disconnect the external screen. This update also made bug 719620 go away, so it looks like the machine, as shipped to us, had quite a buggy BIOS to begin with. So far I've only tried this with Natty (kernel 2.6.38-8), I'll update in a bit with results from Maverick (2.6.35). Please let me know if you'd like me to perform other tests to validate this. I won't touch the bug's status as I'm not sure how to proceed when a bug gets "fixed" by a BIOS update. Also, please let me know if I should update on the upstream bug as well. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-intel in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/754799 Title: [arrandale] external VGA output doesn't output anything (i686) ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 780961] Re: Natty Xorg crashes on Thinkpad X201 (i915 driver) when using keyboard-based window management
** Description changed: Binary package hint: xorg Ever since upgrading to natty a couple days ago, I've been having problems with Xorg crashing. I got a traceback (already attached, gdmlog1), which suggested something related to pthreads, so I tried disabling hyperthreading and all but one core in BIOS. This reduced the frequency of crashing from about once per 10 minutes to once per 2 days. I don't know if it's specific to the intel driver, or if it is a more general issue. As far as steps for reproducing the issue... I'm not exactly sure. This is a description of a typical session: 1. Log in via gdm. I'm using sawfish, with a custom Xsession. 2. Start a few programs. I ran xchat, chrome, midori, a few instances of dillo, and a few instances if urxvt (client/server mode, not independent instances). 3. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 780961] Re: Natty Xorg crashes on Thinkpad X201 (i915 driver) during screen updates
So far so good on the mouse-only window management. It seems that as long as I don't use the keyboard to move windows or change desktops, Xorg doesn't segfault. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 790822] [NEW] Xorg freeze during boot after upgrading driver
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xorg When installing natty on this hardware [zotac geforce 9300 motherboard] with onboard nvidia chipset, the [recommended] driver causes the system to hang during boot. It goes to a purple screen with no logo, and the HD continues activity as if the boot occurred, but the screen never comes alive to login. [auto login was selected, not stop in login screen]. The 173.14.30 drivers continue to work fine, but an upgrade to the recommended driver version [whatever that is because it is not reported in the dialog] causes the freeze on boot. This condition occurred on 10.04, but cleared itself with an additional reboot. I will attach the "additional drivers" screenshot. - ww ProblemType: Bug DistroRelease: Ubuntu 11.04 Package: xorg 1:7.6+4ubuntu3 ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 2.6.38-8.42-generic 2.6.38.2 Uname: Linux 2.6.38-8-generic x86_64 NonfreeKernelModules: nvidia .proc.driver.nvidia.version: NVRM version: NVIDIA UNIX x86_64 Kernel Module 173.14.30 Sat Apr 16 21:49:29 PDT 2011 GCC version: gcc version 4.5.2 (Ubuntu/Linaro 4.5.2-8ubuntu4) Architecture: amd64 CompizPlugins: No value set for `/apps/compiz-1/general/screen0/options/active_plugins' CompositorRunning: None Date: Tue May 31 10:58:58 2011 DistUpgraded: Fresh install DistroCodename: natty DistroVariant: ubuntu DkmsStatus: nvidia-173, 173.14.30, 2.6.38-8-generic, x86_64: installed nvidia-current, 270.41.06, 2.6.38-8-generic, x86_64: installed GraphicsCard: nVidia Corporation C79 [GeForce 9300 / nForce 730i] [10de:086c] (rev b1) (prog-if 00 [VGA controller]) Subsystem: nVidia Corporation Device [10de:cb79] InstallationMedia: Ubuntu 11.04 "Natty Narwhal" - Release amd64 (20110427.1) JockeyStatus: xorg:nvidia_173 - NVIDIA accelerated graphics driver (Proprietary, Enabled, Not in use) xorg:nvidia_current - NVIDIA accelerated graphics driver (Proprietary, Disabled, Not in use) MachineType: NVIDIA MCP7A ProcEnviron: LANGUAGE=en_US:en LANG=en_US.UTF-8 SHELL=/bin/bash ProcKernelCmdLine: BOOT_IMAGE=/boot/vmlinuz-2.6.38-8-generic root=UUID=06bee02f-8d93-477e-8a49-6a54590a6e78 ro quiet splash vt.handoff=7 Renderer: Unknown SourcePackage: xorg Symptom: display Title: Xorg freeze UpgradeStatus: No upgrade log present (probably fresh install) XorgConf: Section "Device" Identifier "Default Device" Option "NoLogo""True" EndSection dmi.bios.date: 01/06/2009 dmi.bios.vendor: Phoenix Technologies, LTD dmi.bios.version: 6.00 PG dmi.board.name: MCP7A dmi.board.vendor: NVIDIA dmi.board.version: 2 dmi.chassis.type: 3 dmi.chassis.vendor: NVIDIA dmi.chassis.version: MCP7A dmi.modalias: dmi:bvnPhoenixTechnologies,LTD:bvr6.00PG:bd01/06/2009:svnNVIDIA:pnMCP7A:pvr2:rvnNVIDIA:rnMCP7A:rvr2:cvnNVIDIA:ct3:cvrMCP7A: dmi.product.name: MCP7A dmi.product.version: 2 dmi.sys.vendor: NVIDIA version.compiz: compiz 1:0.9.4+bzr20110415-0ubuntu2 version.ia32-libs: ia32-libs 20090808ubuntu13 version.libdrm2: libdrm2 2.4.23-1ubuntu6 version.libgl1-mesa-dri: libgl1-mesa-dri 7.10.2-0ubuntu2 version.libgl1-mesa-dri-experimental: libgl1-mesa-dri-experimental N/A version.libgl1-mesa-glx: libgl1-mesa-glx 7.10.2-0ubuntu2 version.nvidia-graphics-drivers: nvidia-graphics-drivers N/A version.xserver-xorg: xserver-xorg 1:7.6+4ubuntu3 version.xserver-xorg-video-ati: xserver-xorg-video-ati 1:6.14.0-0ubuntu4 version.xserver-xorg-video-intel: xserver-xorg-video-intel 2:2.14.0-4ubuntu7.1 version.xserver-xorg-video-nouveau: xserver-xorg-video-nouveau 1:0.0.16+git20110107+b795ca6e-0ubuntu7 ** Affects: xorg (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: amd64 apport-bug freeze natty regression-update ubuntu -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/790822 Title: Xorg freeze during boot after upgrading driver ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 785681] Re: Unable to unblank screen, cursor still present
This bug report looks like what I have experienced on my system. I want to distinguish this from other bug reports about blank screens or blank screens. With this bug the entire screen is black but the cursor is still visible and the desktop still works. I have only had this happen after leaving the computer for an extended period though it doesn't happen every time I leave the computer for an extended period. The screensaver has activated and the desktop has locked. When this happened this morning I was able to verify that despite no login box being visible I was able to log in and my mouse cursor reflected my desktop contents (namely that the cursor changed to reflect the google map that had been on my desktop the night before). This is using "gnome classic with effects" and I believe it to be a bug with the Intel video driver. This bug may be misdiagnosed as people may not realize their desktop is still responsive. This is not the same as bugs 780653 or 762918 as they have been reported though some people commenting to those bugs may actually have this issue. This issue may also be related to those issues. I mean to try the following suggestions next time: sudo pkill X or sudo killall -w -s KILL compiz DISPLAY=:0.0 compiz --replace -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-intel in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/785681 Title: Unable to unblank screen, cursor still present ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 683016] Re: emacs23/rxvt/xawtv/vlc crash Xorg w/ proprietary NVIDIA driver
I experience this problem also on Natty. I reopened the bug, as instructed, and provided information using apport-collect. I ran apport-collect after provoking an X crash, and then logging in again. The problem is easy to reproduce by starting emacs, nxclient, or a few other applications whose names I currently don't remember. Removing xfs did not work for me. KDE hangs when I login. If anyone has hints on how to run KDE without xfs, I am interested. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 524281] Re: Tens of wakes per second in "[kernel scheduler] Load balancing tick" on Core 2 Duo even with only 1 core enabled
Yes I have also seen a similar degradation between the two kernels. What is notable in your case and mine is that the kernel interrupts are labelled differently between the two cases. There are actually fewer load balancing ticks in the later kernel but other categories eg [extra timer interrupt] are chewing up power. So something appears to have changed but not in a good way and focussing solely on [kernel scheduler] Load balancing tick is not appropriate. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/524281 Title: Tens of wakes per second in "[kernel scheduler] Load balancing tick" on Core 2 Duo even with only 1 core enabled ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 524281] Re: Tens of wakes per second in "[kernel scheduler] Load balancing tick" on Core 2 Duo even with only 1 core enabled
I have updated my tests for both the latest 2.6.38 kernel of natty and the latest 2.6.34 kernel from mainline as suggested, on my Thinkpad T61 laptop. After login I have sudoed previously, then run: sudo powertop -d -t 60 > ~/Desktop/powertop_dump-`uname -r`.log Running on battery, not having started anything but one terminal window after logon. Both kernels, results attached: there is a visible difference still! 15,5W versus 17,9W meaning 3,4 hours versus 2,9 hours = a half an hour of time on battery! I think both power regressions found by Phoronix at 2.6.35 and 2.6.38 are there. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 549727] Re: [10.04] Touchpad stops working after login
I just upgraded my Lenovo Thinkpad T410 to 11.04 Natty and hit this issue. The solution that worked for me seems a bit simpler than some of the ones offered earlier so hopefully this will help someone. Hit Alt-F2 Type gconf-editor and hit return Browse to desktop/gnome/peripherals key Look for your touchpad - mine looked like "SybPS@47@2..." Uncheck the "disable while other device exists" option Bingo! Presumably the problem was that Thinkpads have two built-in pointing devices. While the solution turned out to be simple, it took me a good hour to figure it out and the earlier comments in this thread helped me to start looking in the right place.
