It's incomplete because we still need someone to collect a full backtrace on this crash - see http://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Backtracing for guidance. Alternately, if you can specify steps to reproduce the crash I can try on my end (I haven't seen any crashes like this, and I hit Enter many times during the day). [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 777493] Re: nvidia drivers activated but not in use on natty 11.04
after thoroughly researching this for a couple of weeks, and trying every suggestion possible :: - checking /var/log and updating /etc/default/grub - using current ppa (binary and source) - using older nvidia drivers - removing all display related drivers - downloading and installing from nvidia - clean install then one strategy or another - purge drivers and re-install one or another strategy after entirely too much pushing and pulling -- the only way to cleanly boot into graphics mode is to use "vesa" driver in the xorg.conf (and uncomment 'vesafb' in /etc/modprobe.d/*.conf ) {good luck..} also try adding "nvidia" to /etc/modules .. without the entry in /etc/modules, 'modprobe' shows it missing, even though it is in fact there, and dkms shows the module current, and there appear to be no errors in kern.log or dmesg - at various points X would complain that there was no /dev/fb0 or just that there was an I/O error {no telling what actually got this working somewhat} any way to slice it, X will not load the driver.. it would be helpful if the installer could report on the device status or at least have an option to check all of the critical areas to see if things have loaded correctly and then produce a report showing all of the relevant details.. of course, downgrading/clean-installing to 10.04 did not work either - none of the graphics modes worked on this particular machine.. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 267913] Re: hda-intel: IRQ timing workaround is activated for card #0. Suggest a bigger bdl_pos_adj
Notable correction: I should have written 3Gbit/s SATA, not 3GB/s. This amounts to a maximum transfer rate of around 45MB/s. Correction to the information request above: please run badblocks BEFORE any of the other steps, including looking in Disk Utility or running smarctl. (You may have to install smartmontools [spelling?] to have that command available when the time comes.) If you run badblocks first, it will ensure that all sector replacements made from reserved blocks to compensate for read errors during the badblocks test (which reads every block on the drive) will get logged, and thereby provide a more accurate picture of whether bad sectors exist, but have been replaced and hidden/disabled by SMART. This is especially relevant if SMART wasn't already enabled in BIOS, as it will need an opportunity to start gathering data for the log that you will be checking later via Disk Utility and smartctl. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to nvidia-graphics-drivers in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/267913 Title: hda-intel: IRQ timing workaround is activated for card #0. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 267913] Re: hda-intel: IRQ timing workaround is activated for card #0. Suggest a bigger bdl_pos_adj
I've just determined that my Windows 7 hard drive (750GB, NTFS, /dev/sdb) was faulty. It had around 100 bad sectors reported in the SMART logs, according to the Disk Utility (System > Administration > Disk Utility [in Natty]), and I discovered that the huge amount of I/O wait occurred only when I was accessing this drive, especially for a long data transfer (copy/move, etc.). Notably, after the first few hundred MB at around 45MB/s, it slowed abruptly to a crawl of about 5MB/s via 3GB/s SATA. It seemed to make little difference whether I had it mounted read-only (which is faster for NTFS on Linux), or r/w, and was equally slow in Windows 7 and in Linux (Ubuntu Natty). I've since replaced the drive with a new 1TB SATA HD after testing it for bad sectors (using 'sudo badblocks -svb 4096 /dev/sdx'), and have noticed a dramatic speed increase. I've not yet checked whether the dmesg logs report this same error message as before, but I'll check when I get around to it. So, here's my request for information from those experiencing this bug: -Please ensure that SMART monitoring is enabled for all your drives, in BIOS. -Open System > Administration > Disk Utility. Click on each of your drives, in turn, and click on the button for its SMART status. Please copy and paste any error entries you see, as well as anything that stands out to you. -Please run the following command on each of your hard drives. You can do this on multiple drives at once, although I recommend not running many more instances than you have CPU cores. It's OK (and safe) to run this on mounted drives, even while data is being written to them. 'sudo badblocks -svb 4096 /dev/sdx' (Replace "sdx" with the device name for the hard drive you intend to test. Use only one drive per command, and DO NOT include the partition number--i.e. type "/dev/sda", and NOT "/dev/sda1".) Post all output from these commands to this thread. If any bad sectors at all are found--which will be noted by their block number--then your drive is bad, and should be replaced. This can usually be done under warranty, via the manufacturer's (Seagate, Western Digital, etc.--not Best Buy or similar). Badblocks will take a VERY long time to run, especially on a broken drive, so please be patient and continue until the end, or until you find a bad sector. -Finally, run this command to get some verification and more information from SMART: 'sudo smartctl --log error /dev/sdx'. Replace sdx with your drive's /dev/ entry. Please post all output from the above. I'm not a developer, but I have a whole lot of experience in dealing with the practical application of hardware testing and business-level computer repair. If my hunch is correct, this will allow you do solve your problems related to this bug once and for all! I'm honestly not sure how the sound driver relates to the performance problems or the hard drive failure I had, but given the excessive I/O wait that slowed down all 4 of my 2.66GHz CPU cores, it wouldn't surprise me if it's causing timeouts or other problems that the sound driver is sensitive to. Good luck, and I look forward to reading your responses! --Dane -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to nvidia-graphics-drivers in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/267913 Title: hda-intel: IRQ timing workaround is activated for card #0. After suspending the computer and turning it on, the computer was working (hard drive noises and num lock led in the keyboard was on but the screen refused to response, just black screen). No suggested keyboard combination turned the screen on. Tried the Compiz solution suggested above and it worked sometimes. Today I finally tried using another driver version Selected System->Admin->Additional drivers-> selected the 173 version (not the recommended version) and it seems that the problem was solved. You can try using other drivers for you specific video card. *By the way, had the same problem with this video card also in WinXP (solved it in the same manner), so I don't think it's an Ubuntu problem. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/781402 Title: Ubuntu 11.04 / Unity freezing when screen is 'woken up' ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 764051] Re: Second monitor useless in dual desktop mode
I think the wider issue here is that this is a specific change in functionality, wherever it may be. Under the prior version of Ubuntu, configuring a second monitor/second video card as a seperate X screen would result in the second screen being set up the same as the first when it came to window decorators. Since the upgrade, this functionality has changed, and the X-Server is launched without a default window manager, let alone a clone of the first monitor's window manager setting. Now, there is completely non-obvious behaviour happening, and for the majority of first-time users, the fact that the second monitor *does not work as expected* will cause consternation. Contrary to the low improtance assertion, there are a number of valid use-cases for configuring a second monitor with a seperate X-Server. I use a seperate X-Server on my HDMI-out for general display work when I'm using my laptop for other purposes. I've used it in the past for presentation work, or for displaying server monitoring services and displays in a way that doesn't interfere with my primary workspaces. Not every use case for multiple monitors has them next to each other, or even in close proximity. As I type this I have a monitor being driven by a seperate X Server at the end of a 5 meter HDMI cable - if it was running in Twinview then when I switched workspaces I'd lose what was being displayed in the external monitor. And I'm not the only audience for that second screen. I'd heartily disagree that this is of "Low" importance, although I wonder if the actual bug is in Compiz, or in the way X (or Ubuntu for that matter) handles the user-selected configuration of multiple X-Servers, especially where a second display is launched without a default window manager (if one is not set for the primary display), and where there is no obvious way to run a display manager for those without comand line knowledge. I struggled myself to resolve this, and I've been using Ubuntu as my only OS (work and home) for the past 5 years or so, so I shudder to think of the reaction of a newcomer to Ubuntu when they run into this kind of issue. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to nvidia-graphics-drivers in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/764051 Title: Second monitor useless in dual desktop mode ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 761065] Re: [Sandybridge] Spurious "*ERROR* Hangcheck timer elapsed... blt ring idle" messages in dmesg when using compiz
Yesterday I updated from the xorg-edgers ppa and the bug seems to be gone now. I even set the semaphore parameter to "0", which was a sure way to trigger this problem, and now there are no error messages about GPU hangs in dmesg. This Phoronix article also suggests that this problem was fixed in mesa 7.11-devel, not in the kernel: http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=article&item=intel_snb_natty&num=1 Right now I have the latest xorg-edgers packages with kernel 2.6.39-0.5~20110427 from kernel-ppa , and everything is running smoothly. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 792698] [NEW] GPU hung ERROR => nothing is displayed on screen anymore.
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel Since my upgrade to Ubuntu 11.04 with Unity, I sometimes have a GPU hung error in which case it seems the screen is 'dead' and does not show anything anymore. Here the error: May 26 13:02:42 ubuntu-server kernel: [22293.856048] [drm:i915_hangcheck_elapsed] *ERROR* Hangcheck timer elapsed... GPU hung May 26 13:02:42 ubuntu-server kernel: [22293.856069] [drm:kick_ring] *ERROR* Kicking stuck wait on render ring The system remains trying for every while to get control over the GPU, but without any effect. The lines above are repeated every couple of seconds in the logfile. If I do a Remote shell to my ubuntu machine it seems that the machine works without problems except for the videocard. If I do a reboot, everything works fine immediately again (including the videocard). In Windows7 (my system is dualboot) I have never experienced any problem with my videocard. I have a Intel® Desktop Board D945GSEJT motherboard with an ATOM 1.6 GHz processor on it and with an onboard i915 GPU chip. In an earlier version of Ubuntu I have had a problem with the videocard as well, after an upgrade to that version a strange problem occurred which caused my Xwindows to freeze completely. This was eventually fixed with upgrading to a higher version of the Linux kernel, but it seems related to not be able to get control over the GPU (that is at least what I remember). Info of my motherboard: http://www.intel.com/products/desktop/motherboards/D945GSEJT/D945GSEJT-overview.htm It has the latest available version of the BIOS inside. I have no clue how to continue and to get this issue solved. If I would have known on forehand I would not have upgraded to 11.04, because I want a stable system. Does anyone have any suggestions? Might be related to: #690201 and to #732304 but I don't think it is exactly the same. ** Affects: xserver-xorg-video-intel (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-intel in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/792698 Title: GPU hung ERROR => nothing is displayed on screen anymore. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
