[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 775060] Re: Random GUI freezes in Natty (can only move the cursor)
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 740126 *** https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/740126 I have the exact same problem, using an Ati HD3650 graphics card on a HP EliteBook. As #740126 seems to be related to Intel only I can't see that this is a duplicate. In my case, this will happen very randomly and in Ubuntu Classic only, I have so far not experienced the bug in Unity. The screen will freeze, normally as I am working on something (no discernable pattern) and I'm left with a mousepointer which is context-sensitive even though I'm unable to interract with the OS. Shifting to a different display/console (Ctrl-Alt-F#) while using external dual-screens will result in black screens. Changing back I have a graphical glitch covering a square around where the mouse-pointer is at the moment that does not move arount with the mouse-pointer. While on my laptop-screen only I can change to a different terminal and restart gdm, that will usually fix the problem and I can start a new session. I'm using the comercial Catalyst 11.5 drivers, older drivers seemed vry slow for some reason, resulting in stuttering and tears.. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-intel in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/775060 Title: Random GUI freezes in Natty (can only move the cursor) To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-intel/+bug/775060/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 778263] Re: 11.04 amd64 installation on Dell Dimension 9100
This installation got even worse as keyboard bindings eventually caused the 2 key to switch DVI output to a mode my monitor would not support. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 760632] Re: Resizing Konsole crashes the whole system
I can also confirm that using the 275.09.04 drivers package from the philip5 ppa resolved the various issues for me too. In fact it seems to work remarkably well. No more nasty screen artefacts, no more random crashes from gnome-terminal or gedit. Whilst I still maintain that NVIDIA was very slow to investigate the issue, once it actually started addressing the issue, it has resolved it commendably quickly. As a side issue, I was interested to note that Philip Johnnson describes his personal package archive as a Ubuntu experimental rolling release repository. By adding his PPA to one's repository list means that one receives updated versions of many other applications. I'm very interested to see how that pans out because I have found the concept of a rolling version rather intriguing. If a rolling edition of (K)Ubuntu eventually comes to pass, then will it mark the end of rushed, untested versions of (K)Ubuntu, banged out quick, with serious bugs such as this, just in order to meet artificial deadlines? Or will it lumber users with more bugs not fewer? [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 795562] [NEW] Dkms fails to build nvidia module for kernel 3.0-01
Public bug reported: As the new kernel is greater than 2.6, the dkms.conf dont accept the 3 version, so nvidia users cant use the latest kernel. But someone have found what is needed to be tweaked: 1. patch /usr/src/linux-3.0-0-generic/include/linux/rcupdate.h according to http://choon.net/forum/read.php?21,82725 2. this file /usr/src/nvidia-current-275.09.04/dkms.conf prevents build with kernels newer than 2.6, so you have to modify the line: OBSOLETE_BY=3.0.0 3. in the file /usr/src/nvidia-current-275.09.04/nv-linux.h, there's a section: #if LINUX_VERSION_CODE KERNEL_VERSION(2, 4, 7) # error This driver does not support 2.4 kernels older than 2.4.7! #elif LINUX_VERSION_CODE KERNEL_VERSION(2, 5, 0) # define KERNEL_2_4 #elif LINUX_VERSION_CODE KERNEL_VERSION(2, 6, 0) # error This driver does not support 2.5 kernels! #elif LINUX_VERSION_CODE KERNEL_VERSION(2, 7, 0) # define KERNEL_2_6 #else # error BLAHBLAH #endif so you have to replace error BLAHBLAH with something like define KERNEL_2_6 so that we pretend it's a 2.6 kernel. You should then run sudo dkms build -m nvidia-current -v 275.09.04 -k 3.0-0-generic sudo dkms install -m nvidia-current -v 275.09.04 -k 3.0-0-generic ProblemType: Bug DistroRelease: Ubuntu 11.10 Package: nvidia-current 270.41.06-0ubuntu1 ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 2.6.39-3.10-generic-pae 2.6.39 Uname: Linux 2.6.39-3-generic-pae i686 NonfreeKernelModules: nvidia .proc.driver.nvidia.gpus.0: Error: [Errno 21] est un dossier: '/proc/driver/nvidia/gpus/0' .proc.driver.nvidia.registry: Binary: .proc.driver.nvidia.version: NVRM version: NVIDIA UNIX x86 Kernel Module 270.41.06 Mon Apr 18 14:54:25 PDT 2011 GCC version: gcc version 4.6.1 (Ubuntu/Linaro 4.6.0-11ubuntu2) Architecture: i386 CompizPlugins: No value set for `/apps/compiz-1/general/screen0/options/active_plugins' CompositorRunning: None Date: Fri Jun 10 16:02:15 2011 DistUpgraded: Fresh install DistroCodename: oneiric DistroVariant: ubuntu GraphicsCard: nVidia Corporation G86 [GeForce 8500 GT] [10de:0421] (rev a1) (prog-if 00 [VGA controller]) Subsystem: ASUSTeK Computer Inc. Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 733374] Re: X freeze, nvidia-current, Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick GeForce 9600GT
It looks like its definetely and Xorg issue,as it affects all video drivers and all input drivers(I confirmed evdev mouse kbd synaptics,etc.).The mi Event queue is somehow getting left behind due to some other activity in xorg and comes up stuffed,it looks like something breaks/crashes in it after it overflows as even if I let it finsh catching up(and close all processes that potentially caused it),it will immediately overflow again.Where are the devs who would be familiar with these components? [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 795720] [NEW] mouse input/alt+tab stops working, restarts working (sometimes) after minimizing and restoring windows
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xorg Without any obvious trigger, the mouse will cease working. I can still move it, but it doesn't do anything like open tooltips or click, and hovering over the Ubuntu button doesn't cause the launcher to appear. Switching windows via alt+tab or super+w doesn't work either, though otherwise the keyboard input works okay in the window which has focus, and i can bring the launcher up by holding Super, and launch programs using it with the keyboard shortcuts. After i minimize all windows using Super+d, the bring them back, the mouse begins working again for a brief time, until i try alt-tabbing again or clicking outside of the currently-focused window, in which case it reverts to the previous behavior. I've managed to make it go away through some non-repeatable series of minimizing/unminimizing windows and opening the Ubuntu menu over and over again. The bug only happens to me in Unity in 11.04; it does not happen in the Ubuntu Classic session, and did not happen to me in 10.10. Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xterm Start X, and under X an xterm running bash. Select some text and paste it at the command prompt. It is not echoed. Type any keyboard character and the mouse-pasted text appears, followed by the typed character. This is not a bash problem: typing to cat or ed shows the same results. As I wrote here on comment #31 I was able to remove tearing enabling the Force full screen redraws (buffer swap) on repaint, the Sync to Vblank options on nvidia server settings and setting the compiz fusion icon to start at boot with indirect rendering disabled( I think this works as the compiz --replace comand suggested in the workaround on comment #45). [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 682287] Re: Black Screen at Start
Bit of playing... From what I can make out, DPMS isn't being set on, or is being ignored on some boots by the driver. If I ssh into the laptop (while screen is off) and issue: #sudo vbetool dpms on the screen then turns on. As a quickdirty fix for this, I did the following: Edit the file /etc/gdm/Init/Default Scroll to the bottom of the file, and before the line exit 0 and after the last fi entry, add: /usr/sbin/vbetool dpms on Save and exit, reboot. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 783643] Re: Blank Screen with ATI driver and Radeon 9800 Pro
Ok, got it, ticket #655200 got me on the right track: It's just the DVI output that shows nothing with the radeon driver (while vesa does). Before the LCD screen was connected to the DVI output of the graphics card via a DVI-to-VGA adapter (because there used to be another screen on the normal VGA output). Now I connected the LCD screen directly to the VGA output and it works, the screen is not blank anymore. I have now idea which packages fault that is though and where something needs to be changed and fixed.
