[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 185600] Re: libreoffice repeatedly freezes after resuming laptop from sleep

2011-06-29 Thread Fiepel
Can confirm this bug on Ubuntu 11.04
NVidia driver 270.41.19
Compiz 1:0.9.4+bzr20110606-0ubuntu1~natty2
Libreoffice: 1:3.3.2-1ubuntu5

I did not have this behavior prior to upgrading from 10.10 to 11.04. I
am not sure when exactly it started to occur. Maybe it has to do with
the NVidia drivers that I installed from NVIDIA directly?

nvidia-2.6.36-ioctl.patch is actually slightly wrong, but will still
kind of work.

I have now proposed a cleaner solution. If accepted for nvidia-graphics-
drivers, then I'm happy to do the same for -96 too.

 Bug description:
  SRU Justification:

Impact: The end result of the commit is loss of scroll support, with no
  extra functionality gained.

How addressed: By reverting the commit, the previously enabled scroll
support is reestablished through the ImPS/2 extension.

Reproduction: Run current Ubuntu kernel on affected hardware. Scroll
functionality present in previous Ubuntu releases is now missing.

Regression Potential: Since this is a revert of a one-line device id,
the regression potential is minimal. The device should fall back to
  ImPS/2 protocol without issue.

  Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-input-synaptics

  I have Ubuntu 9.10 and an Alps touchpad (E7: 73 02 64). Chase fixed
the kernel so that it was recognized and, indeed, the touchpad shows
up in both gsynaptics and systempreferencesmouse, but when I
actually try to adjust the settings nothing changes. My goal is to
disable the tap-to-click feature or disable the touchpad when typing.
Chase suggests it may be something related to the driver and to open
  another bug.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 793338] Re: Unplugging USB tablet crashes xserver

2011-06-29 Thread Timo Aaltonen
There is a new upstream release (1.4.1) that should fix this bug, it'll
get in oneiric soon. It requires xserver 1.10 though, so a direct
backport to anything older than natty is not possible.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 801763] [NEW] Typing causes cursor to stick

2011-06-29 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Steps to reproduce:

1.) Type a few key strokes.
2.) Try to move the cursor using the touchpad.

Expected result:

Cursor moves immediately

Actual result:

Cursor sticks for several seconds

This could very well be strongly linked to the hardware used (Samsung
N310, using the touchpad, not a mouse), so let's see if anyone else can
reproduce.

So, the 2 seconds delay is on purpose, because it breaks this feature
for other people. So the real solution to this bug is to get the
synaptics (on xorg and kernel input mailing lists) patches merged in so
that palm detection works properly and we can remove the code altogether

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 626974] Re: ABI change in xorg 1.9 breaks legacy nvidia-96 drivers in Maverick

2011-06-29 Thread Manfred Hampl
As far as I know the current situation is as follows:

There is a working version of the dedicated proprietary nvidia-96 driver
for Ubuntu 10.10 - not delivered with the installation or upgrade CD's,
but available from the standard repositories for normal package
installation.

The issue with Ubuntu 11.04 (there is no working dedicated proprietary
nvidia -96 driver for xorg 1.10 available yet) is not the topic of this
bug, but dealt with in bug #741930

Setting the status on X.org X server to 'invalid' mens that the changes
have to be done / have been done on other packages, and X.org X server
is not to be blamed.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 772207] Re: version 173.14.30 driver is buggy for NVidia GeForce FX series

2011-06-29 Thread Goffredo Marocchi
It affects my system at work as well. Both with regular Xorg stack as well as
with the edgers' repo.
I am running with the 173.x drivers which have the common active... but not in
use problem as others have mentioned here before. Also, the standard Xorg
configuration nVIDIA generates does not correctly recognizes the PCI address of
the card so I had to comment that line out just to boot Ubuntu with the nVIDIA
drivers (either that or deleting the xorg.conf file did the trick). GL feels
very slow too although glxgears reports FPS to be above 1,000. lsmod does show
nvidia 8107272 36 BTW.
Ubuntu Classic *(with effects) does work, while Unity does not. I do not see
menus and I see desktop icons appearing and disappearing very quickly. Not
usable at all running Unity.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 476357] Re: External monitor will not activate (cannot find crtc for output)

2011-06-29 Thread Timo Aaltonen
So it's a limitation of userland mode setting, and since we default to
KMS now it shouldn't be an issue anymore. UMS is largely unsupported by
us on -ati, -intel and -nouveau only support KMS.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 771788] Re: nVidia driver activated and apparently being used but reported as not being used by jockey-gtk

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 534677] Re: [lucid] Broken backlight control with Radeon open-source drivers

2011-06-29 Thread Dana Goyette
This is still true with the Radeon driver in Natty. There's no
BACKLIGHT property exposed on the LVDS interface.

Gnome Power Manager itself now works around it, with gnome-backlight-helper.
KDE also now somehow works around it, as well.

So, the user-facing portion is fixed, but the original problem (missing
BACKLIGHT property) still exists.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 293485] Re: no working driver, problem with hal

2011-06-29 Thread Mihnea-Costin Grigore
@Timo: The bug was filed against a Ubuntu package, which is actually still
alive and well, under active development:
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-input-penmount/1:1.4.99+git20101202.6658e9ad-0ubuntu2

While Penmount does supply separate linux drivers, this bug had nothing
to do with those and everything to do with the Ubuntu package.

So what's with the invalid status, it should be left at fix
committed if that solved the issue, but the bug was very much VALID
when opened.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 803541] [NEW] Xorg freezes sometimes after display went to sleep

2011-06-29 Thread Alex Shulgin
Public bug reported:

After upgrading from Maverick to Natty (clean install, not a dist-
upgrade) I've noticed that every few days my laptop's X screen stops
updating.

This happens when system is left idle for certain period of time, like
20 minutes.

So I turned off the screensaver, but this didn't help. I have a power
management setting to put display to sleep after 15 minutes, which I am
now turning off (setting to 'Never') to see if that helps.

When the bug occurs: I would get back to my laptop and find it's screen
blank (which is expected after a while being idle,) hit a key to wake it
up and get back to where I've left. However, the screen is not updating
anymore: e.g. gnome-terminal cursor doesn't blink, cpu load graph applet
doesn't tick, etc. If I move the mouse, it will update the cursor
position and shape (e.g. turn to beam cursor when over text input area,
and back to arrow then leaving the area.) If I try to click at any
point or type something on the keyboard, nothing seems to happen. A gdm
restart helps to regain X w/o rebooting the system. I've looked up X,
kernel and gdm logs but didn't seem to find any clues.

This doesn't happen every time I wake the laptop--not even every day,
but sometimes it happens 2 or 3 times a day. The laptop is running on
AC power most of the time, and every time the problem occurred it was
plugged into wall charger.

I've been running Ubuntu since version 8.10 on this same machine and
never experienced this bug before Natty.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 803542] Re: xorg session hang

2011-06-29 Thread Cefn
OK, back on the laptop again after a hard reboot.

During the session hang, there was no response from keyboard or mouse
clicks, although the mouse cursor was moving, and X applications were
responding. For example I managed to trigger a save operation in the
Gedit window I had open by using Ctrl+Alt+F1 to get a new terminal, then
running the following to trigger a keystroke to be sent to the window...

DISPLAY=:0 xdotool key --window `DISPLAY=:0 xdotool search
--onlyvisible --name gedit` ctrl+s;

I'm deliberately using a kernel from LP-PPA-kernel-ppa/natty to test for
upcoming problems for Xorg with proposed kernels, so this may be worth
noting. I'll use whatever kernel PPA you think is most useful for this
testing from now on, if that's not the right way to go.

After the reboot, I noted there's a new release of Xorg appeared in the
last day or so in natty-updates, so I'm upgrading to that and we'll see
how we go.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 800208] Re: nvidia graphics not working

2011-06-29 Thread David Bensimon
Solution for LTSP:
1) On the server, install nv drivers.
$ sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-video-nv

2) On the server, edit /var/lib/tftpboot/ltsp/i386/lts.conf to contain
the following (replacing the 00's with the client's MAC address):

## START ##
[default]

[00:00:00:00:00:00]
 X_CONF=/etc/X11/nv-xorg.conf

[00:00:00:00:00:00]
 X_CONF=/etc/X11/nv-xorg.conf
## END ##

3) On the server, create a custom /opt/ltsp/i386/etc/X11/nv-xorg.conf
file for these client within the LTSP chroot directory (also know as the
client remote filesystem directory):

$ sudo nano /opt/ltsp/i386/etc/X11/nv-xorg.conf

Edit /opt/ltsp/i386/etc/X11/nv-xorg.conf to contain the following:

## START ##
# /etc/X11/xorg.conf
Section Device
Identifier Configured Video Device
Driver nv
EndSection

Section Monitor
Identifier Configured Monitor
EndSection

Section Screen
Identifier Default Screen
Monitor Configured Monitor
Device Configured Video Device
EndSection
## END ##

4) On the server, rebuild the image:
$ sudo ltsp-update-image -p 2000 -b /opt/ltsp -a i386

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 803610] [NEW] synaptics touchpad upgrade freezes X directly after login

2011-06-29 Thread Martin Weis
Public bug reported:

after upgrading xserver-xorg-input-synaptics in natty the following
happens:

1. login (via gdm), touchpad is working here on login screen
2. after 2-3 sec. no touchpad mouse movements possible (freeze)
3. gnome loads background image, but no panels etc.
4. restarting gdm from console makes the touchpad work again on login screen
(gdm), GOTO 1.

Uninstalling xserver-xorg-input-synaptics helps to resolve this
particular problem (login/gnome OK), although then most features do not
work any more (e.g. two-finger, middle click simulation by pressing both
mouse buttons).

I think the Xserver log is useful, I think there is a segfault logged
after init of synaptics (cannot review logs in browser...). Some more
info about the device and the regression follow:

hwinfo --mouse

incorrect, assertion (dest) == NULL || !dbus_error_is_set ((dest)) failed

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 798509] Re: pressing 2 or Enter terminates X server on live CD

2011-06-29 Thread Eliah Kagan
@Timo Aaltonen
I have noticed that you have just marked this bug as a duplicate of bug 579313.
However, Steve Langasek (https://launchpad.net/~vorlon) insists
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/plymouth/+bug/579313/comments/22)
that this is a different bug. Based on that post, I am marking this no longer a
duplicate of bug 579313, and I am adding lightdm as an affected source package.
I have also subscribed Timo Aaltonen to both bugs and Steve Langasek to this
bug, so that everybody knows what's going on, and nobody feels like they are
being ignored. I apologize if this action (subscribing both of you) is
inappropriate.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 803610] Re: synaptics touchpad upgrade freezes X directly after login

2011-06-29 Thread Martin Weis
Just seem to have resolved the issue by also installing gsynaptics
(removed a few days earlier), now I am back to a fuctional touchpad in
gnome. So it may be more a gnome issue (although unity showed same
problem, freeze after login).

So this bug should be closed, I will see if problem reappears.

One more comment: installing xserver-xorg-input-synaptics immediately
crashed the xserver, that may be the segfault seen in the log file
(XorgLogOld.txt ...).

---Other tests below---

After uninstalling xserver-xorg-input-synaptics the Xserver log looks

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 798990] [NEW] Unity doesn't load after update

2011-06-29 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

When I updated Ubuntu via the update manager - Update Manager broke my
NVidia Drivers, and Unity wouldn't load, it said I should be using the
classic desktop, surprising as It's not exactly a crap computer
Anyway, I downloaded NVidia's drivers from their website and I killed X
and GDM, I installed the drivers NVidia provided, thankfully, I've got a
working desktop again now. I assume the bug is with nvidia-graphics-
drivers, but I have no idea.

Specs:
4GB DDR3
1TB HD
NVidia GTS 250
i5 650

That's all that should be at all necessary.. right? After all, I believe
the bug is in the NVidia drivers downloaded from the repo.

2011-06-29 Thread papukaija
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. This bug did not have a package associated with it, which
is important for ensuring that it gets looked at by the proper
developers. You can learn more about finding the right package at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage . I have classified this
bug as a bug in nvidia-graphics-drivers.

When reporting bugs in the future please use apport by using 'ubuntu-
bug' and the name of the package affected. You can learn more about this
functionality at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 760743] Re: Xorg crashes when a player plays a video - sync xserver-xorg-video-openchrome (1:0.2.904+svn920-1) from Debian resolve this problem

2011-06-29 Thread Chris Hills
Hi, I'm using mythtv, vlc and was having the same problem with X
crashing and dropping to login on prompt in Natty. I installed the dep
package from the same location as Alessandro above

https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-
openchrome/1:0.2.904+svn920-1/+build/2484053/+files/xserver-xorg-video-
openchrome_0.2.904%2Bsvn920-1_i386.deb

installed and rebooted which solved my problem in mythtv which was when
displaying the epg which contains an PIP (picture in Picture) which
would crash X and drop to login. It's a bit slow at the display, but
that I would put down to the Unichrome pro 2d/3d 128 bits Graphics
onboard graphics being a bit low on power.

During the research of this problem, many solutions detailed the
solution to be change the driver name from vesa to openchrome in
xorg.conf which is not possible when the natty upgrade has removed the
file.
