[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 780424] Re: Xorg unresponsive after screensaver unlock with Dual Head

2011-07-06 Thread Bryce Harrington
High X memory bugs are almost always caused by a runaway client program.
There's nothing in any of the files you attached to suggest it is really
an X bug.

You seem to have a number of non-standard software installed like
virtualbox and chrome. Do a bit more analysis into what applications
are running when this bug happens and try killing them off one by one.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 804734] [NEW] Please ship 60xdg_path-on-session like gdm

2011-07-06 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Hi,

Gdm is patched in ubuntu to ship /etc/X11/Xsession.d/60xdg_path-on-
session (attached for reference) to automatically set the correct
XDG_{CONFIG,DATA}_DIRS depending on $GDMSESSION.

Xubuntu already switched to lightdm, and relies on this feature to have
the xdg variables correctly set.

From a quick look at the source code, lightdm already sets GDMSESSION,
could you please add a similar file to the lightdm package? Thanks.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 806256] Re: xf86PostMotionEvent resets cursor to upper left

2011-07-06 Thread mitchcyber
http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/message.php?msg_id=27604784

looking at the code, first_valuator is always 3 when sending pad event
(wcmCommon.c:748). If the server resets the pointer, that indicates a bug in
the server. However, it doesn't happen to me on 1.10.2 and I can't find any
patches that would have fixed this bug since 1.10.1. I wonder if that's a
Ubuntu-specific X server bug?

The driver code is correct though.

and also

As another data point, I cannot confirm the jump under Arch Linux
after having downgraded xorg-server to 1.10.1. It's looking more like
an Ubuntu-specific bug.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 805754] [NEW] Ubuntu Live freezes at boot.

2011-07-06 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Ubuntu 11.04 (both 32-bit 64-bit) live ISO always freezes at boot
without giving any information. To solve it I had to manually grab the
ISO to a USB stick memory and then modify /syslinux/syslinux.cfg and
remove the ui option. Here's the description of the hardware :

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 713867] Re: Live-CD and Installed Ubuntu freeze on boot with GeForce 210 / Nouveau

2011-07-06 Thread Massimo Forti
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-nouveau

I bought a new graphics adaptor to replace my old ATI one. The model I
  chose is a Gainward GeForce 210 1024MB DDR2 HDMI.

Upon installing the new adaptor my Ubuntu 10.10 64bit system froze on
reboot. I tried booting from the 64 and 32 bit CDs always producing the
same result - freezing. It freezes right when starting to boot from GRUB
  - producing just a blinking cursor in the upper left corner of an
  otherwise empty screen.

This has not changed with the lastest alpha 2 CD of Natty, either.

After changing the grub command line options to nouveau.blacklist=1
(as suggested somewhere on the web) I could boot my system and install
the NVIDIA driver instead which works fine, however, I no longer get a
bootsplash. Consecutively I made it a default in /etc/default/grub to
  keep my system from freezing.

  GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=quiet splash nouveau.blacklist=1

I did an lspic -vv, maybe it helps:

Anyway, I thought I might report this bug as a frozen system might be a
real showstopper for any Linux newbies. I'd be grateful, if somebody
  could look into this.

I already reported this as an addition to bug #661235 but I was asked to
start a new bug report as it seems to differ form the situation
  originally described there.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 185600] Re: libreoffice repeatedly freezes after resuming laptop from sleep

2011-07-06 Thread Phil Colbourn
Similar prob. MacBook Pro 4,1
With binary nvidia driver

Linux max 2.6.38-8-generic #42-Ubuntu SMP Mon Apr 11 03:31:24 UTC 2011
x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Happens when LibreOffice is running and laptop sleeps/resumes.

Typically Writer is very slow and causes whole laptop to pause for
several seconds.

Get this error in Xorg.0.log:
[mi] EQ overflowing. The server is probably stuck in an infinite loop.

To 'fix' I rmmod bcm5974 and modprobe bcm5974 and quickly kill
LibreOffice and reopen it.

The trackpad (BCM5974) clicks still function but there is no mouse
cursor.

I have bcm5974 removed/reinstalled before/after a sleep/resume - does
not seem to help.

No other application seems to cause this.

Need anything else?

PS: A friend with a virtually identical setup has same problem.

2011-07-06 Thread Yusef Maali
All the workarounds proposed here haven't worked for me.

I have had to revert to the nv driver to have a usable system.

I tried to downgrade xorg and the binary driver but my system still freeze.
I tried (with the current xorg) all the binaries driver from nvidia (270, 275

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 760632] Re: Resizing Konsole crashes the whole system

2011-07-06 Thread Vlado Plaga
@Yusef: have you actually tried the 275.09.07 driver, or 275.09.04? The
275 driver(s) before that would not include the fix (I ran into that
problem too), and I don't know about any beta 280.

Anyway nouveau would probably be preferable over the nv driver, from
my experience. If you don't need 3D acceleration, it can be quite a good
option (also supporting transparent Konsole).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 802558] Re: [xorg-edgers] huge performance regression after upgrade

2011-07-06 Thread Maxime R.
Thanks for the info. I'll stick with the 3.0 kernel (rc6 now) and intel
git20110624 for the moment, unless i find a better combination of
kernel/drivers versions.

As for virtualbox, make sure you have installed the latest version of
module-init-tools (cf. my previous link).
I also had to execute to following command : # sudo /etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup
and I got my VM back to normal.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 797262] Re: Segfault causes sparodic logoffs after update to natty

2011-07-06 Thread Marc Deslauriers
Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but this appears
to be a regular (non-security) bug. I have unmarked it as a security
issue since this bug does not show evidence of allowing attackers to
cross privilege boundaries nor directly cause loss of data/privacy.
Please feel free to report any other bugs you may find.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 760632] Re: Resizing Konsole crashes the whole system

2011-07-06 Thread Yusef Maali
@Vlada: yes, I have tried both.
I have tried the binary directly from nvidia site, not from the repository.
Check here: http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=122606

I was not able to use the nouveau driver due to some kind of libdrm
incompatibility...

with the driver xserver-xorg-video-ati is very rare, but it happens.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 760632] Re: Resizing Konsole crashes the whole system

2011-07-06 Thread Vlado Plaga
@yusef
So you're running a 275.09.07 driver, but it crashes when you resize the
konsole, as Ubuntu's default official nvidia driver?
I also installed using the nvidia packages, but I found it quite complicated,
so I wouldn't recommend it... but I don't remember where exactly the problem
was. Maybe you're not actually completely running the new driver? Check
/var/log/Xorg.0.log. I get this line:

[29.076] (II) NVIDIA dlloader X Driver 275.09.04 Thu Jun 2
12:53:09 PDT 2011

The libdrm issue with nouveau (it's about installing the distribution
package xserver-xorg-video-nouveau, right?) you're probably having
because the nvidia driver overrides files that normally are under
package management in Ubuntu. You could try to (manually) remove nvidia
files completely and install nouveau again (possibly with --reinstall
or --force).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 806546] [NEW] Modifier keys (Shift, Alt, Super) stick/cling at the mere/simple push of a button.

2011-07-06 Thread DarkneSS
Public bug reported:

When I press any of these keys, they sometimes stick/cling. Shift stick/cling
approximately at every second press, Alt stick/cling a couple of times a day.
Sticking/clinging disappears when I press sticked/clinged key. I haven't this
bug in terminal on Alt+Ctrl+F1. I use KDE 4.6.3, I see it in openbox too. I got
this bug after upgrade from 10.10 to 11.04. At 8.10-10.10 (from intrepid to
maverick) everything was normal.

If sticked/clinged the left Shift button, then right Shift button cannot turn
off sticking/clinging , and vice versa.
 My keyboard is clean.

2011-07-06 Thread Matthew Schwimmer
Same problem amd same card as T meyer.

The same bug appears on my NVIDIA GeForce GT 525M with NVIDIA-Current
drivers. The System (11.04) just starts Ubuntu-Classic and the driver is
activated but not in use (jockey). When i edit the xorg.conf File by
adding Driver nv or Driver nvidia the system is unable to boot the x
server.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 780424] Re: Xorg unresponsive after screensaver unlock with Dual Head

2011-07-06 Thread Druid
Thanks for the response.

As if by magic it did it again today.
I killed off chrome and virtualbox with no response. Killed off the screensaver
with again no change. Compiz and X just sat at 100% cpu and zero response to
the mouse/keyboard on the screen.

I don't tend to run much, lots of gnome-terminal's, firefox, opera,
chrome and virtualbox are pretty much all that's ever running.

I'm not sure if it is the same issue or not but I found this:
http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=162243

Which at least partly matches both the hardware (multi nvidia GPU,
multi-monitor), Ubuntu and behaviour but I can't trigger it with the
script the OP has posted.

For reference I'm using Nvidia driver version: 260.19.06

I can/will run anything required to try and tie down the issue further.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 240738] Re: syndaemon sometimes fails to disable the touchpad

2011-07-06 Thread zeimm
Hello,

I am running ubuntu 10.10 on a Dell Inspiron laptop n 5010. I get exactly the
same touchpad problem as described by everyone else even though I've ticked the
Disable touchpad while typing option.
I also think this is an extremely frustrating issue and the importance of
resolving it must be raised.

Best regards,
Zea

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 760632] Re: Resizing Konsole crashes the whole system

2011-07-06 Thread Yusef Maali
@vlado:
I've tried all the binaries available in the repositories, then I've started to
try all the binaries from official nvidia releases (the lastest 270, 275 and
280).

None of them works.

My issue is not strictly related to konsole.
The system freezes whenever I have lot of GPU intensive task, ie a lot of
transparencies, video player streaming or *flash player* running.
With Adobe Flash Player I'm having screen redrawing problem from maverik and
natty has not solved it.

I'm starting to have the doubt that this may be a the signal of an
imminent hardware failure...

About nouveau:
I have clean my system from all components of other drivers... I'm quite sure
the problem isn't this...

Thks!

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 806548] Re: [xorg-edgers] Desktop gets messed

2011-07-06 Thread MiiJaySung
Yes, the issue with this is:

xserver-xorg-video-intel 2:2.15.0+git20110706.0be47f45

If you are using an Intel graphics chipset (I have a Thinkpad with a
similar setup and had similar issues).

The best way to work round this for now is to download and install:

https://launchpad.net/~xorg-edgers/+archive/ppa/+build/2589725/+files
/xserver-xorg-video-
intel_2.15.0%2Bgit20110624.471115a9-0ubuntu0sarvatt_amd64.deb

(From page https://launchpad.net/~xorg-
edgers/+archive/ppa/+build/2589725)

This should get round things for the short term.

I also noticed when I installed any later versions of this package that
were built between now and 471115a9 that my X display would randomly go
black and refuse to switch modes (i.e. switching to a TTY by pressing
Ctrl + Alt + F2, etc wouldn't switch the display, but otherwise did
allow me to switch to TTY to gracefully reboot by three finger salute).
Likewise SAK (Sys Req + Alt Gr + K wouldn't reset X)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 760632] Re: Resizing Konsole crashes the whole system

2011-07-06 Thread Christopher K.
@Yusuf: have you tried disabling desktop effects? I think if you disable
desktop effects and the system still keeps freezing, e.g. while Flash player is
running, you have another problem.
You might be also affected by this bug, but I think you might have more
problems such as a hardware problem or other bugs.
Did your problem occur when you updated to natty or did you experience similar
problems before natty?
Are you using another operating system maybe? Does this also freeze? have you
tried a memory test (just in case ;) )?

kubuntu upgrade to 11.04 produces error: cannot open theme file
/usr/share/kde4/apps/kdm/themes/ethais and then goes to command prompt,
no kde desktop access, no gnome fall back or other desktop options @

It upgraded successfully (no reported issues) then upon reboot @ login
error: cannot open theme file /usr/share/kde4/apps/kdm/themes/ethais and
then only terminal access;

- 'lsb_release -rd' produces Ubuntu 11.04

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 760632] Re: Resizing Konsole crashes the whole system

2011-07-06 Thread Ivan D Vasin
@Yusef:

at the risk of being a bit off-topic, i'll mention that i have a very
similar experience on a Gentoo system with a GeForce GTX 465 using the
275.09.07 driver. i also have similar problems in Windows 7 in some
graphics-intensive games and Flash videos with the same card, especially
with the 275.33 driver (less so with the 270.61 or the 275.50). at some
point, the whole system simply freezes; in Windows, the screen goes
black for about 10 seconds, then reboots.

on a different system with a GeForce 330M, i don't have these issues,
and the 275.09.04 and 275.09.07 drivers both resolve the specific issue
in this bug (freezing during Konsole resize).

do you have a GTX 400 series card? if so, try a card from a different
series. perhaps there's something wrong with these. i plan on doing
the same when i find time to borrow my roommate's GTX 260.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 745112] Re: [arrandale] desktop is messed up (goes black) when laptop is docked with two external 1920x1200 monitors (x86_64)

2011-07-06 Thread Martin Pool
One remaining problem with Timo's kernel is that Fn-F7 does not work,
which amongst other things means if the laptop ever gets confused with
the internal display off there is no escape other than hard-rebooting.

Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 780424] Re: Xorg unresponsive after screensaver unlock with Dual Head

On Wed, Jul 06, 2011 at 04:49:42PM -, Druid wrote:
 Thanks for the response.

As if by magic it did it again today.
I killed off chrome and virtualbox with no response. Killed off the
screensaver with again no change. Compiz and X just sat at 100% cpu and zero
response to the mouse/keyboard on the screen.

Careful; these bugs can look a lot a like considering just symptoms.
I don't see mention of high xorg memory or cpu mentioned there, so it
may be a regular gpu lockup. GPU lockups don't usually involve high
cpu or memory.

For reference I'm using Nvidia driver version: 260.19.06

I can/will run anything required to try and tie down the issue further.

You might find http://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troubleshooting useful.

  Binary package hint: unity

In oneiric, moving anything (even small windows) flickers a lot, and
  shows slow vertical redraws.

When using gnome-shell (and mutter) from oneiric (no PPA) on the same

2011-07-06 Thread Mike
I am puzzled why there are only ten people affected by this bug. It
drives me absolutely crazy and I am forced to disable touchpad clicks.
How can so few people be complaining? Is it hardware-specific? Do other
laptop touchpads disable themselves in the hardware rather than relying
on the synaptics driver?

2011-07-06 Thread Brian Murray
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Reviewing your log files attached to this bug report it
seems that a package failed to install due to a segmentation fault in
application being used by the package installation process.
Unfortunately, this bug report isn't very useful in its current state
and a crash report would be much more useful. Could you try recreating
this issue by enabling apport to catch the crash report 'sudo service
apport start force_start=1' and then trying to install the same package
again? This process will create a new bug report so I am marking this
one as Invalid. Thanks again for helping out!

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 745112] Re: [arrandale] desktop is messed up (goes black) when laptop is docked with two external 1920x1200 monitors (x86_64)

2011-07-06 Thread Martin Pool
One other issue (though it might be compiz rather than the kernel) is
that after ejecting and then re-docking I'm left with a screen that's
totally blank aside from a mouse cursor. The cursor moves with the
mouse and it actually changes shape from arrow to I-bar to finger as I
move around, suggesting the windows are still there, but the lights are
out.

I think the problem is that most people never actually figure out what
is happening well enough to be able to locate this bug report. I agree
--it must be affecting many more people. As well as the MacBook
mentioned at the top, it also affects both of our two other laptops.
That is 100% of our laptops which are from 3 different manufacturers.
On one laptop, we've had to disable tap-to-click, making the touchpad
