I appreciate your frustration as I spent many years in both OS and
application software support. I had several other apparently related
issues at the time - videos not playing consistently in FF and problems
with FF5 come to mind. So I uninstalled and re-installed Ubuntu without
the error.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 681904] Re: [arrandale] Samsung QX310/QX410/QX510/SF310/SF410/SF510/NF210/RF410/RF510/RF511/RF710 trackpad/touchpad not recognized

2011-08-10 Thread Daniel Manrique
Hi Seth,

I tested this kernel on a Samsung QX410 with Elantech touchpad, kernel
version as follows:

Linux version 2.6.38-11-generic (root@tangerine) (gcc version 4.5.2
(Ubuntu/Linaro 4.5.2-8ubuntu4) ) #48~lp681904v201108052202 SMP Fri Aug 5
22:16:29 UTC

It works and feels very similar to the patch for #64 (which is what I
use on my 2.6.38-10 current kernel), I tested tap-click and two-finger
scrolling (vertical and horizontal) and they all work fine.

FWIW, on this particular laptop I don't get the wobbliness problem
everyone talks about.

Relevant lines from dmesg:

[ 16.407116] elantech: assuming hardware version 3, firmware version 133.27.0
[ 16.443281] elantech: Synaptics capabilities query result 0x19, 0x14, 0x0c.
[ 16.606611] elantech: x_max = 2934, y_max = 1630
[ 16.621855] input: ETPS/2 Elantech Touchpad as
/devices/platform/i8042/serio1/input/input8

Don't hesitate to let me know if you need more information about this
system, or need me to perform more tests.

Thanks!

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 589520] Re: [KM400]Haven't been able to execute normal gnome login since 10.04 installation; screen blanks then returns to login screen

2011-08-10 Thread Anibal Avelar
I had a similar problem, I always got this messages after some time:

Jul 26 12:50:11 server1 gdm-simple-greeter[1266]: Gtk-WARNING:

g_value_get_boolean: assertion `G_VALUE_HOLDS_BOOLEAN (value)' failed

But I didn't have another idea about was happen. The error ocurred overall
using Firefox or Thunderbird, my session always close

But works for me this option in /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Section "Module"

 #Load "record"
 Disable "record"

EndSection

I need to "explicit" disable this module. Then the problem disappear for
ever :P

I know the module is loaded by default then if you don't have the option
doesn't mean the module is not used, you need disable explicitly.

Regards.

2011-08-10 Thread Seth Forshee
The patch from comment #64 is unlikely to ever make it upstream or into
Ubuntu. It changes too much in a single patch, it needs a lot of
cleanup, and the upstream driver has moved on to the official multi-
touch protocol.

I've used that patch as a reference for understanding the newer Elantech
touchpad protocol and developed a patch that only adds support for this
protocol. This is testing well for me on a Samsung NF310, but I'm not
sure whether or not it will support the touchpads on all the models
listed here. I've made builds for natty and oneiric in order to get
testing on more hardware so we can find out.

Note that unless you are using oneiric you will still see the wobbly
cursor issue. In oneiric this is fixed by filtering in xserver-xorg-
input-synaptics. I have no plans to add any filtering to the driver.

The test builds are available at:

  http://people.canonical.com/~sforshee/lp681904/

After testing, please report back which hardware you tested on and
whether or not it worked. If it doesn't work please attach the output of
dmesg when running the test build. Thanks!

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 762641] Re: package vlc-nox 1.1.9-1ubuntu1 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 139

2011-08-10 Thread Brian Murray
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Reviewing your log files attached to this bug report it
seems that a package failed to install due to a segmentation fault in
application being used by the package installation process.
Unfortunately, this bug report isn't very useful in its current state
and a crash report would be much more useful. Could you try recreating
this issue by enabling apport to catch the crash report 'sudo service
apport start force_start=1' and then trying to install the same package
again? This process will create a new bug report so I am marking this
one as Invalid. Thanks again for helping out!

Testing Oneiric Alpha 3 on an Insprion 1122 with an ATI video card. I
had issues with screen corruption when connecting an external display
using the OSS driver, so I opened Jockey and tried using the Proprietary
  driver instead.

This was even worse, however, because I was almost unable to use the
system while the proprietary driver was loaded. I had to drop to a
shell and use jockey-text to remove it before I could use the system
  again.

- So, the proprietary driver that Jockey is suggesting for ATI cards in

- blacklisted from Jockey so that users don't end up with an unusable
- Oneiric system.

Done. Sorry for neglecting to do that yesterday. I'm in the lab and
have a whole list of systems in test, and in the last two days alone
I've filed 30 bugs or so :( things slip through the cracks... but I've
remedied that now.

Unfortunately, I do not have anything more descriptive for you. Thus, I
attached a video showing EXACTLY what was happening. I was assuming
that if a picture is worth a thousand words, a video should be "War and
Peace Unabridged"... It's just that simple. Install driver. Boot.
System is unusable because it's a black screen, then not a black screen,
then a black screen, then not a black screen... :)

I assume nothing, which is why I stated specifically in the bug that I
was operating on an Inspiron 1122 with an ATI video card. That's pretty
narrow, I think. But hopefully, the logs attached from #1 above will
help further narrow it down.

Negative... I flew up to Lexington specifically to do a help do a
certification test run on the systems stored there in the Cert Lab.
I've not touched this system since I came up here to do the 11.04 cert
run back in April. In fact, as far as I can tell by the system entry on
the cert site, that was the last time anyone tested on this machine.

> Hope this all helps, and good luck improving your bug report.

It does, and I do apologize for the lack of logs and such, as I said, I
have a whole list of systems to get through and the first two systems
lone generated 30 bugs and took two full days of my time to get through.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 824099] [NEW] [EeePC 1001 PXD] Plugging in external monitor to VGA port makes both displays completely unusable

2011-08-10 Thread Jeff Lane
Public bug reported:

Oneiric Alpha 3 installed on this system. Under testing, one test is to
plug in an external monitor and ensure that external video functions
properly. On this EeePC, it does not. (See photo attached to this
bug).

Once the external montior is plugged in, both the primary display and
the external display are horribly garbled. The only thing that exists
on the screen that's remotely readable is the panel at the top. The
rest of the desktop area is just a mess.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 822858] Re: Braid downloaded from humble bundle 3 but not running on Ubuntu 11.04

2011-08-10 Thread Kamil Nadeem
** Description changed:

Hello fellow brothers in Linux I run Ubuntu 11.04 32bit and I need your help.
Had downloaded Braid yesterday from humble bundle 3. the game is in a .bin
file
and it didn't ran so made it executable in permissions but to no help, then
did
forum searching on installing bin files and found (chmod a+x name_of_file.bin
and then sudo ./name_of_file.bin It will install the bin file.) It installed
as
root only to find out it will not run then went over deleting the file using
sudo nautilus before deleting the files ran Bird and following error came up
in
terminal "Game Startup Error: Unable to set up graphics. Reason: Failed to
  initialize OpenGL display".
Then added .sh to the file and ran it and installed it in the home folder but
the game won't run. (I am running nvidia 9800gt with the latest drivers so my
system is an able being) and have already contacted The Humble bundle guys and
they cannot help because they claim to have short hand in Linux and asked to
look in Linux forums. The game is uninstalling well by clicking
uninstall-braid.sh also .braid file is being created in home folder This mean
the installation is okay. So here I rest my case.
- They have provided a debian package and Installed the game but the game won't
+  They have provided a debian package and Installed the game but the game won't

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 788317] Re: Xorg freeze, blank screen, mouse moves, VT works

2011-08-10 Thread bitinerant
I have this maybe twice a month since 11.04--black screen with active
mouse pointer. After typing my password, mouse pointer changes as I
move it to different parts of the screen. Banshee keyboard shortcuts
work to start/stop music.

I eventually discovered that I could recover without a reboot via ctrl-
alt-F1, log in, type "killall -9 compiz", ctrl-alt-F7, and wait several
seconds.

This is a dual-screen Dell desktop and I never connect or disconnect
screens.

I have started to experience this in Natty as well. Normally only from a

No (at least, for me), because in the "please enter your password to
unlock" state closing the laptop screen doesn't cause netbook to sleep
(closing the laptop screen causes standby only when already logged in).
So, to make your laptop sleep after hibernation, you anyway should
somehow first log-in (and doing it in text-mode is IMO easier).

Anyway, nowadays hibernation seems to work fine for me.
