[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 544525] Re: [RV380] dual monitor not working - M24 1P [Radeon Mobility X600]

2011-09-21 Thread Bryce Harrington
Hi, from the upstream bug report it sounds like upstream suspects this
issue may be solved now. Would you mind testing with a newer Ubuntu
(Natty at least, Oneiric ideally) and see if you can still reproduce the
issue?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 557829] Re: [RS780MC] overheats computer

2011-09-21 Thread Bryce Harrington
Here's what upstream has told me about this bug:

 557829  27705   RS780  Overheats computer

I suppose the new radeon pm stuff I'm working on should help. The
oem's are supposed to design the system to deal with the default
clocks, but it appears perhaps they have not. This also might be an
acpi issue. It's likely the oem uses a acpi controlled fan for both
the GPU and CPU so the fan control is out of our control. I've
updated the comments. My latest pm patches are here:
http://people.freedesktop.org/~agd5f/pm3/
you can either enable dynpm (where the driver changes the engine clock
on the fly) or you can manually set a lower power mode. Hopefully we
can get a preliminary version in for 2.6.35. As an alternative which
may also be useful in other cases, I've attached a patch to disable
acceleration in the drm. This should keep temperatures down as it
doesn't use the engine. It may also be useful for some of the other
bugs with accel/gart related issues. It uses shadowfb when X starts,
so performance is pretty good. Basically boot with radeon.accel=0 to
disable accel.

It shouldn't even load the module if the device is not supported by it.
Looks like there's a genuine bug then.

Can you try first installing the machine with the safe mode, and then
install a 3.1rc mainline kernel to see if it boots normally?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 763688] Re: [915GM] S-video output doesn't work in Natty (i386)

2011-09-21 Thread Donatas Glodenis
To upgrade to kernel from Maverick, go to Konsole, and do:

wget
http://ubuntu.linux-bg.org/ubuntu//pool/main/l/linux/linux-image-2.6.35-30-generic_2.6.35-30.54_i386.deb
sudo dpkg -i linux-image-2.6.35-30-generic_2.6.35-30.54_i386.deb

Then reboot and choose the older kernel.

You can also upgrade to a kernel from oneiric. You will have to find it
in packages.ubuntu.com, download it, install it and then download and
install the missing dependencies also from oneiric. I have tried it, it
works, but I found it simpler to use the older kernel just when I want
to watch movies through my tv screen.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 760632] Re: Resizing Konsole crashes the whole system

2011-09-21 Thread Timothy Arceri
Hi Jean,
  Marking this as a papercut is not going to help getting the
package in the repo. You should instead mark the package that is fixed as fix
committed. This way package maintainers know that a fix is available for this
bug and it may give them a reason to update the package.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 745112] Re: [arrandale] desktop is messed up with external monitors (x86_64)

2011-09-21 Thread Joe Thomas
linux-image-2.6.38-11-generic Also doesn't work for me.
However as mentioned in a comment above this only seems to affect me when the
monitor is already plugged in when I start up Ubuntu.
If I boot up Ubuntu without an external monitor, then plug in a screen, it
works fine.

downgrade than upgrade, and not a real downgrade either, unless you

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 805303] Re: Gtk-CRITICAL **: IA__gtk_widget_style_get: assertion `GTK_IS_WIDGET (widget)' failed with the default qt4 gui

2011-09-21 Thread Timo Aaltonen
Picard works for me with the ppa _if_ I first move the old config away.
With it, it'll start in fullscreen mode and works fine until I put it in
windowed mode. Then I need to kill picard, which results in compiz
crashing and needing a restart. Haven't been able to reproduce it with a
clean config.

I've attached the config (sanitized the paths, removed my musicbrainz
login info), if you want to figure out what happens there..

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 556782] Re: [rs690m] Graphics corruption with ati x1200

2011-09-21 Thread Steve Taylor
UPDATE: The mods suggested above sadly did not help with Natty. I've
done a total, clean install of 10.04 LTS UbuntuStudio (as I wanted the
low-latency kernel for music apps).

With UbuntuStudio 10.04:
* Video so far works now without a hitch, straight out of the box with my ATI
RV370 [Radeon X300] PCI card! *
What I think is OpenGL content now works just as well as anything, and I
haven't seen any rendering issues yet. Overall, video seems much more solid and
stable. No further command-line mods or workarounds needed at this point in
time.

Not only that, but with the addition of just the Medibuntu package and
alsa-firmware on top, I can even drive my EMU (Creative Labs) 0404 PCI
soundcard for audio and MIDI as well!

Next step: create the new bug report re: apocalyptic Natty rendering, as
per Oliver's suggestion #89.

Thanks again Brian and Oliver for your excellent advice!

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 799202] Re: wacom stylus jumps with latest xserver-xorg-core

2011-09-21 Thread Jussi Pakkanen
The new packages do not fix this for me. I still get ghost jumps.

This makes sense, because if the valuators are parsed incorrectly, then
the Qt tablet app should draw additional loops as well. I even tried
moving the window partially outside the top left corner to make sure any
paint operations to (0, 0) would leave a mark on the canvas.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 781353] Re: libgl1-mesa-dri: display inverted (upside-down) in startkde after natty upgrade

2011-09-21 Thread apetrelli
Ok probably I specify the problem wrong. So it is a problem with libGL version
of NVidia proprietary driver and the open source one.
In fact I cannot uninstall nvidia driver since I have an Optimus laptop, where
I use the discrete card with Ironhide.
Is there a workaround for this situation, such as explicitly specify libGL path
in XOrg configuration file?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 195982] Re: Shift key (and caps lock) stop working when using VMWare

2011-09-21 Thread Hans Meine
I have no problem with Shift or Alt, but with Ctrl, everytime when I leave the
vmware player on natty (Kubuntu, no Unity or the like here).
(I am using the Neo keyboard layout, so I have no CapsLock key to test.)

Unfortunately, this bugreport seems to be a big mess:
* People having problems with different keys,
* with or without(?) varying(?) virtualization solutions,
* sometimes mentioning new HID hardware (applies to me, too [1]),
* sometimes mentioning graphics drivers (closed-source NVidia for me, too),
* with varying software and kernel versions,
* and with different proposed workarounds (calling 'setxkbmap' being the most
efficient one AFAICS).

And for me, I can only say that I did not have this problem in the past, but I
am not sure which of the many things that changed in the meantime caused this:
* upgrading from Maverick to Natty
* installing the new keyboard [1]
* performing daily Ubuntu software updates
* updating VMWare player
* /not/ using Unity ;-) but KDE (half-jokingly, after all vmware-player has an
Enter Unity menu entry)
* using Ctrl-Alt to release the kbd grab

The latter seems to be the most likely to me; in the past, I just moved
the mouse to the top to reveal and focus the menubar and then used
Ctrl-F2 to change the virtual desktop, but that does not work anymore.
So I had to learn about Ctrl-Alt, but now I have the problem with Ctrl
stopping to work. (It's always Ctrl, but never Alt, independent of the
order in which I press or release the two.)

[1] Got a Microsoft Natural Ergonomic keyboard recently.

  NVIDIA GeForce 6200 video card.

  When booting I see white vertical stripes on screen in place of either the
 plymouth ubuntu text or the plymouth ubuntu logo. I have attached a photo of
 the screen at boot. It looks like it is the plymouth text theme that is
 being used and indeed if I remove plymouth-theme-ubuntu-text my system boots
 with just a black screen until login.
  The same behaviour is exhibited during shutdown.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 805303] Re: Gtk-CRITICAL **: IA__gtk_widget_style_get: assertion `GTK_IS_WIDGET (widget)' failed with the default qt4 gui

2011-09-21 Thread Tom Hindle
@Aurélien Gâteau: just tried with ubuntu-desktop ppa. Seems to be same
behavior as before. thg icon displays in the unity sidebar - but doesn't
bring up the workbench window. Then the desktop or other applications
doesn't respond to mouse clicks until thg is killed.

It seems the thg is receiving the mouse events - but the window isn't
painting. If I right click on the desktop I get context menus from the
thg workbench application.

Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 675114] Re: left-handed mouse and wacom

2011-09-21 Thread Dmitry Yamaykin
Hello Bryce,

 Thanks for your inquire.

 Wacom pen have buttons which function just like mouse buttons, but they are
arranged vertically, lower button acts like left-click, upper means
right-click.

 I'm using a left-handed mouse with my left hand, which means left and right
buttons
mirrored so that I do left-clicks with forefinger and right-clicks with
middle finger. Sorry
for extra details here.

 The issue here is that Wacom pen buttons are swapped as well. Which is, as
far as
pen buttons are lower and upper instead of left and right, incorrect.

 I hope I clarified the issue.

 Sincerely,
 Dmitry.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 854388] Re: oneiric beta 1 live CD video corruption on nvidia GeForce 6150SE

2011-09-21 Thread Jim Leinweber
Tried oneiric daily build 2011-09-20 i386, same results. ISOlinux boot
menus work, startup and shutdown splash screens work, text consoles
work, in X the mouse is OK, but the unity bar, task bar, and application
windows are squished/stripey/unreadable. I presume this means that vesa
modes are OK as long as acceleration hardware isn't in use.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 799202] Re: wacom stylus jumps with latest xserver-xorg-core

2011-09-21 Thread Jussi Pakkanen
The Krita code that deals with tablet events seems to be this in
kis_canvas_controller.cpp:

-

void KisCanvasController::Private::emitPointerPositionChangedSignals(QEvent
*event)
{
if (!coordinatesConverter) return;
QPoint pointerPos;
QMouseEvent *mouseEvent = dynamic_castQMouseEvent*(event);
if (mouseEvent) {
pointerPos = mouseEvent-pos();
} else {
QTabletEvent *tabletEvent = dynamic_castQTabletEvent*(event);
if (tabletEvent) {
pointerPos = tabletEvent-pos();
}
}

The obvious failure point being that if the argument is neither a mouse
nor a tablet event, then pointerPos is uninitialized. I did not have
time to check yet whether the bug is caused by this or something else
entirely.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 760632] Re: Resizing Konsole crashes the whole system

2011-09-21 Thread luxifer
@Christopher K.
 The buggy driver might be in the restricted repositories with software
 supported by canonical but if this bug does not affect ubuntu, it is not a
 critical ubuntu bug.
But it does... just not as badly... maybe one should have done another
duplicate bug report to point that out? also this was indeed a driver bug and
howmuch effort would it have cost canonical to just package the newer version?
i mean: this is ridiculous!

@Timothy Arceri
It's still a papercut though!

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 855414] Re: Unity dash becomes very slow/laggy when opening certain webpages (Launchpad) in Firefox

2011-09-21 Thread Jan Rathmann
A bit of errata: I took this report as chance to watch the behaviour in
Natty more closely, and I have to admit that the described
slowness/lagginess of the dash can also be seen in Natty, allthough a
bit better than in Oneiric.

So maybe Unity could be removed as an affected package.

Ditto - everything worked fine under 11.04 with gnome-session, upgraded
to Oneiric, now cannot enable twinview in Unity without things breaking.
Things are OK under Unity 2D.

I used Reset from XServer Display Configuration in Nvidia Settings.

Now I don't see any configuration errors on start-up and twin-view is
working correctly from no config required.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 799202] Re: wacom stylus jumps with latest xserver-xorg-core

2011-09-21 Thread j-b-m
I had a look at the Krita sources, as pointed out by Jussi, and the
problem does not come from the kis_canvas_controller code, but seems to
come from kis_canvas_widget_base.cpp.

There, we have the following code:

void KisCanvasWidgetBase::processTabletEvent(QTabletEvent *e)
{
widget()-setFocus(Qt::OtherFocusReason);
m_d-blockMouseEvent.start(100);

const QPointF pos = e-hiResGlobalPos() - widget()-mapToGlobal(QPoint(0,
0));
m_d-toolProxy-tabletEvent(e,
m_d-coordinatesConverter-widgetToDocument(pos));

// HACK
e-ignore();
m_d-ignorenextMouseEventExceptRightMiddleClick = true;
// HACK
}

My debugging shows that the problem is in the Qt hiResGlobalPos method
from QTabletEvent.

event-pos() seems to give correct results for the QTabletEvent, but
event-hiResGlobalPos() sometimes gives strange results that cause the random
lines.

For exemple, I have the following values from hiResGlobalPos (the x
coordinate):

(...)
453.731
453.682
453.779
12.4536--- weird value
453.633
453.487
(...)

So my guess is that Qt has problem getting the correct values for this
hiResGlobalPos, if anybody with a better inside knowledge of Qt can have
a look...

2011-09-21 Thread Bryce Harrington
Hi David,

Could you elaborate your problem description further?
The logs that were collected simply indicate this lockup was a false alarm (so
just a dupe of #828684), but perhaps you have an actual issue you're trying to
report?

2011-09-21 Thread Bryce Harrington
Hi mholzapfel,

Looking at your dmesg I notice that the GPU hung error is the last entry
in your log, which makes me wonder if your machine hung during shutdown
of your previous session? Near as I can tell this is not a dupe of bug
#828684 (the general False GPU lockup), so this may be worth further
investigation.

Is it possible your system had hung on the prior boot and you power
cycled it? Or, perhaps it hung during shutdown and you just powered it
off?

2011-09-21 Thread Bryce Harrington
Hi Michael,

Just to confirm - on your previous boot before this crash dialog
appeared, did your system lockup, or did it shutdown cleanly?

Looking at your dmesg, there is a GPU Hung error at the end of the log,
which suggests to me your system really did crash and burn, and it looks
like you had a real GPU lockup, not a false one. Can you confirm?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 839039] Re: Xorg assert failure: *** glibc detected *** X: munmap_chunk(): invalid pointer: 0x0000000001970070 ***

2011-09-21 Thread Carla Sella
I had to test Oneiric Beta 2 20110921.1 image
(http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/20110921.1/oneiric-desktop-amd64.iso) and
I discovered that this crash does not occur any more, while with 20110920 image
it happened everytime I used to start the persistent USB key.
Do I still have to try to do what you ask in comment #8, I mean with the
20110920 image, or as the crash does not occur any more must I let go ?

2011-09-21 Thread DasMurkel
Hi Bruce,

I cannot confirm that. The system did not show any sign of error exept
for the Report the Bug popup. I did not hang and I had not powered
down or rebooted the system by hard until that time.

Unfortunately I can't login any more since todays upgrades. I'm hoping
that that bug be fixed with the next upgrades. Then I will keep my eyes
open for this bug to happen again.

Best regards

 Hi mholzapfel,

 Looking at your dmesg I notice that the GPU hung error is the last entry
 in your log, which makes me wonder if your machine hung during shutdown
 of your previous session? Near as I can tell this is not a dupe of bug
 #828684 (the general False GPU lockup), so this may be worth further
 investigation.

 Is it possible your system had hung on the prior boot and you power
 cycled it? Or, perhaps it hung during shutdown and you just powered it
 off?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 608434] Re: [915gm] Dual monitor instability - reverts to low graphics mode

2011-09-21 Thread E. Lewis
Seems to happen only running VirtualBox with Microsoft XP guest.
I run dual monitors (Dell Latitude D820 and a Dell external monitor. Machine
will crash no matter which display VirtualBox is running on.
I made a similar report on Bug 577487.
Workaround: Do not leave computer idle with VirtualBox display visible.
Since this does not happen when running Fedora 15 (native boot), I conclude
that it is a display driver problem with Ubuntu.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 577487] Re: display crashes leaving me in low-resolution mode

2011-09-21 Thread E. Lewis
I experience a similar bug.
I run VirtualBox with a Microsoft XP guest under Ubuntu 10.04 (Gnome). When I
leave the machine idle, the screensaver will appear (no problem) then the
monitor shuts off (as expected). Then inexplicably I get a dialogue Ubuntu is
in low graphic mode. The dialogue (reported above) appears; I have to shut
down and restart the entire computer to restore operation. When this happens,
all active applications are dismissed (tantamount to a complete system crash).
Workaround: do not leave the computer idle with the VirtualBox application
visible. I originally thought this was a VirtualBox problem.
This crashing does not happen under Fedora 15 (Gnome), thus I conclude it has
something to do with Ubuntu display driver.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 855943] [NEW] Installing then uninstalling FGLRX makes Oneiric's Unity unbootable

2011-09-21 Thread Jonathan Meek
Public bug reported:

I was attempting to test this bug:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/781384 by installing FGLRX via jockey-
gtk. After I found that there were no fixes (still), I went back to
jockey and uninstalled FGLRX. However, upon rebooting, I found that
Unity would not load. Applications had their title bars, however and
were able to be moved.

I ran a terminal and ran unity and was received various Compiz
couldn't load plugin X : could not locate libgl.so.1 etc. I checked on
a live USB of mine and this file doesn't exist in a standard install.
The only way I could find to fix it was to reinstall the FGLRX driver to
get things to work temporarily. (Which i did not want to do because of
aforementioned bug).

If you need any more information, I will be glad to pass it along.
Running up-to-date 64bit Oneiric.

Do you have xserver-xorg-input-joystick installed? If yes, remove the
