I have noticed that in 10.10, having Metacity set to do compositing causes video tearing (tested apps: SMPLayer, XBMC; both using VDPAU) whereas using Compiz does not (once refresh rates and Sync to VBlank are set via correctly CCSM and in the X Server settings). [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 860509] [NEW] [RV250] Regression: Screen corruptions on X + massive RAM- Swap-usage
Public bug reported: This is a regression, since in Ubuntu 10.10 (maverick) – apart from a minor bug (see bug #539163) – I have no issues with my graphics hardware and the performance is just incredible. In Ubuntu 11.04 (natty) I'm affected by heavy graphics corruptions in Gnome in addition RAM- and Swap-usage are far from normal. Since my hardware doesn't support OpenGL 1.4 I'm not using Unity but the standard Gnome desktop. 1. Graphics corruptions 1.1. with Compiz When I use Compiz, after several minutes I see some minor corruptions in the Gnome panel; normally in the beginning only one applet is affected (I'll attach a screenshot) but after some time one applet after another gets corrupted. 1.2. with Metacity When I use Metacity there's one corruption I can always reproduce by opening Synaptic – when the password is requested, the background should be darkened. Instead I see all kinds of corruptions. There are also other, less predictable, corruptions. If it helps something I could add screenshots. 2. RAM- and Swap-usage After one or two hours of work RAM-usage reaches around 40% (of 2GB) and from this point on Swap (4 GB) gets filled up until it reaches 100% and the system is unusable. When I use the same applications in Ubuntu 10.10 (maverick) around 30% of my RAM are in use and swap-usage stays under 10%. This applies to Compiz – if it helps I can test RAM- and Swap-usage with Metacity aswell. Workarounds I. radeon-option RenderAccel off This option reduces not just the performance but also the problems mentioned above (but they are still present). II. Forcing the card into PCI mode This seems to solve the mentioned problems – at the expense of horrible graphics performance. III. radeon-option EXAPixmaps off This option seems as the best workaround for me. The symptoms are still present to a extenuated extent but performance is better than with workaround I II. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 805303] Re: Gtk-CRITICAL **: IA__gtk_widget_style_get: assertion `GTK_IS_WIDGET (widget)' failed with the default qt4 gui
I've just tried patching overlay-scrollbars as I mentioned in comment #75. vlc does not crash any more, as expected, but its windows (e.g. Help Help...) have no scrollbars at all, although I can scroll with the mouse wheel. Any ideas why? I guess that qt has been patched to use overlay-scrollbars by default, so I should blacklist vlc there as well as (or instead of) in overlay-scrollbar. Anyway, the chance of easily fixing this bug by disabling overlay- scrollbar for vlc exists. I don't think this bug should be in oneiric final. NB, other bugs fixed by blacklisting programs in overlay-scrollbar have had an ayatana-scrollbar task (not overlay-scrollbar) as per the comments in the source. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg-server in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/805303 Title: Gtk-CRITICAL **: IA__gtk_widget_style_get: assertion `GTK_IS_WIDGET (widget)' failed with the default qt4 gui To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/overlay-scrollbar/+bug/805303/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 741930] Re: [natty] nvidia binary packages for older cards - dependencies not met
I tested the tip in this link to force Unity to start: http://askubuntu.com/questions/37629/geforce-go-7300-7400-blacklisted- can-i-still-run-unity It did start but the launcher was a mess. I then deactivated nvidia-96 and activated nvidia-173 in stead, and now I have Unity working with Compiz effects. The slowness warned about in the link does not seem any intrusive so far. I might test nvidia-current again but will probably try running like this for a while and monitor the performance. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to nvidia-graphics-drivers-173 in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/741930 Title: [natty] nvidia binary packages for older cards - dependencies not met To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/nvidia-drivers-ubuntu/+bug/741930/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 813343] Re: nvidia drivers, second monitor covered by black
I just wanted to note that I no longer have the covered by black problem in 11.10 beta2, however I still do have issues when adding/removing monitors to TwinView. They're mostly visual corruption that go away once the transition is over. I suspect these are different issues than the one reported here though. I edited the file again and made it just: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=quiet splash GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX= And now it boots just fine. I don't know if you will still consider this a bug/regression. But, since I took these options somewhere from the internet, chances are, there are quite a few people who also have these lines in their grub configs, and they will likely experience the same problem I had. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-ati in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/859934 Title: screen corruption and system freeze during boot To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-ati/+bug/859934/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 860933] [NEW] The Close, Minimize, and Maximize buttons disappear when the window is maximized and then un-maximized
Public bug reported: I don't know if this is a problem with xorg. The problem is that when I maximize a window, and then un-maximize it, the three circle buttons in the top left corner disappear sometimes. This does not happen always. You might need to maximize and un-maximize a few times to see it. When the buttons disappear, their functionality remains, however. If you click on where you expect the close button should have been, the window will close. I will try to gather some screenshots. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 754000] Re: 3 finger touch interferes with 3 finger click (middle click)
In Unity a design decision has been made that three and four finger gestures are reserved for the shell. For example, any time you put three touches down on a multitouch trackpad you can start draging the window around (assuming it's not full screen). The only way to implement this behavior is to mask out the three-touch-tap behavior that X synaptics supports. I'm sorry to say that they only reason three touch tapping works in unity 2D is because it doesn't yet implement the window moving gesture. There's no reason this can't be made configurable. I can envision an option turns off specific gestures in Unity. If you disable the window move gesture you'll get three touch tap to paste functionality back. If someone in the community wants to offer a patch to do this we would be happy to review it. ** Changed in: mactel-support Status: New = Invalid ** Changed in: unity Status: Invalid = Opinion ** Changed in: utouch Status: Confirmed = Invalid ** Changed in: unity (Ubuntu) Status: Invalid = Opinion ** Changed in: xserver-xorg-input-synaptics (Ubuntu) Status: In Progress = Invalid -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-input-synaptics in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/754000 Title: 3 finger touch interferes with 3 finger click (middle click) To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/mactel-support/+bug/754000/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 754000] Re: 3 finger touch interferes with 3 finger click (middle click)
Chase, Just a suggestion: If this is the future, it might be best to set the two finger tap to middle click by default, at least on systems with physical buttons. The rationale on this is that right-clicks are easy to do through other mechanisms (right button or menu key), while middle- clicks are more difficult to synthesize on most PC hardware. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 754000] Re: 3 finger touch interferes with 3 finger click (middle click)
Sigh. Clicking is not a gesture. That is my opinion. And three-finger clicks can be made to co-exist with all the current gestures in Unity as my fix (above) shows. The fix I proposed in June is nearly perfect. Certainly it seems perfect on Mac hardware and just needs some minor tweaking to avoid breaking some Dells etc. It would be very unfortunate for Ubuntu and Unity if we abandoned this. Also, something I noticed earlier this year in Unity that is probably still true: Unity treats touch as a gesture. touch probably should never be a gesture. apport information ** Tags added: apport-collected ** Description changed: Binary package hint: ubiquity Installing from a USB stick made by usb-creator on a Hardy Heron computer from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/kubuntu/daily-live/20091028.5/karmic-desktop-i386.iso Installing on a Dell Latitude D600, with a trackpad. When I press and release button1, the GUI button stays in its depressed visual state until I touch the trackpad again. If keep a finger on the trackpad and press and release button1, the GUI stay depressed until I move the cursor. (I do not have to move the cursor off the GUI button -- a tiny movement within the borders of the button is enough.) This happened frequently on the first few installer screens, but buttons behaved normally on later screens. - In retrospect, this happened on earlier ISO releases as well.
