[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 855943] Re: Installing then uninstalling FGLRX makes Oneiric's Unity unbootable

2011-09-27 Thread brittyboi
I too have this bug. I tried all of the previous fixes and none worked.
I am on 11.10 x64 beta 2, and I can say this problem has occurred on
both of my computers and I have tried each with jockey and with apt-get,
both achieving the same result.

My laptop is running an mobility radeon hd4250 and my PC is running a
radeon hd 6950

2011-09-27 Thread brittyboi
Edit on my previous comment:

I ran this command 1 last time and received this result:

sudo apt-get install --reinstall libgl1-mesa-glx
...
Unpacking replacement libgl1-mesa-glx ...
Setting up libgl1-mesa-glx (7.11-0ubuntu3) ...
update-alternatives: warning: alternative /usr/lib/fglrx/ld.so.conf (part of

alternatives.
update-alternatives: warning: alternative /usr/lib/pxpress/ld.so.conf (part of
link group x86_64-linux-gnu_gl_conf) doesn't exist. Removing from list of
alternatives.
update-alternatives: warning: /etc/alternatives/x86_64-linux-gnu_gl_conf is
dangling, it will be updated with best choice.
update-alternatives: using /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/mesa/ld.so.conf to provide
/etc/ld.so.conf.d/x86_64-linux-gnu_GL.conf (x86_64-linux-gnu_gl_conf) in auto
mode.
Processing triggers for libc-bin ...
ldconfig deferred processing now taking place

After reboot it did in fact fix my desktop.

So for some reason, after removing fglrx in the onieric builds, mesa-glx
is not getting reinstalled

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 600178] Re: Screen tearing when dragging window, in videos and other large screen redraws (on nVidia GPU)

2011-09-27 Thread Twisted Lucidity
I have noticed that in 10.10, having Metacity set to do compositing
causes video tearing (tested apps: SMPLayer, XBMC; both using VDPAU)
whereas using Compiz does not (once refresh rates and Sync to VBlank
are set via correctly CCSM and in the X Server settings).

This is on a system with a GT240 and using the proprietary drivers
(version: 280.13).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 860509] [NEW] [RV250] Regression: Screen corruptions on X + massive RAM- Swap-usage

2011-09-27 Thread Stefan Nagy
Public bug reported:

This is a regression, since in Ubuntu 10.10 (maverick) – apart from a
minor bug (see bug #539163) – I have no issues with my graphics hardware
and the performance is just incredible. In Ubuntu 11.04 (natty) I'm
affected by heavy graphics corruptions in Gnome in addition RAM- and
Swap-usage are far from normal. Since my hardware doesn't support OpenGL
1.4 I'm not using Unity but the standard Gnome desktop.

1. Graphics corruptions
1.1. with Compiz
When I use Compiz, after several minutes I see some minor corruptions in the
Gnome panel; normally in the beginning only one applet is affected (I'll attach
a screenshot) but after some time one applet after another gets corrupted.
1.2. with Metacity
When I use Metacity there's one corruption I can always reproduce by opening
Synaptic – when the password is requested, the background should be darkened.
Instead I see all kinds of corruptions. There are also other, less predictable,
corruptions. If it helps something I could add screenshots.

2. RAM- and Swap-usage
After one or two hours of work RAM-usage reaches around 40% (of 2GB) and from
this point on Swap (4 GB) gets filled up until it reaches 100% and the system
is unusable. When I use the same applications in Ubuntu 10.10 (maverick) around
30% of my RAM are in use and swap-usage stays under 10%. This applies to Compiz
– if it helps I can test RAM- and Swap-usage with Metacity aswell.

Workarounds
I. radeon-option RenderAccel off
This option reduces not just the performance but also the problems mentioned
above (but they are still present).
II. Forcing the card into PCI mode
This seems to solve the mentioned problems – at the expense of horrible
graphics performance.
III. radeon-option EXAPixmaps off
This option seems as the best workaround for me. The symptoms are still present
to a extenuated extent but performance is better than with workaround I II.

2011-09-27 Thread Jonathan Lange
Yeah, it's a momentary event and the glitch at the 9-10s mark is it.
I'm afraid I don't have any better recording technology to hand.

I've tried running the logs that you indicate, both with kms debugging
and without. Nothing new comes up while the glitch occurs. For
completeness:

Are you sure these two bugs are related? The metacity one is a crash in
metacity's drawing code, where this bug was a Qt theme making
assumptions about the validity of scrollbar pointers.

shouldn't crash from a misbehaving theme...

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 813809] Re: Hybrid Graphics with Intel+fglrx is not supported

2011-09-27 Thread Bartosz Zasieczny
I don't understand why this bug is marked as triaged. Triaging means
that we know what is the cause of some bug. Currently we don't. And
it's not only supporting hybrid graphics, but at least running correctly
the fglrx correctly. Explanation, that we don't support blah-blah-
blah..., is no explanation.

@Jonathan: look at this attachment:
https://launchpadlibrarian.net/81164594/vlc.out. There are exactly the
same errors as are in this bug's description!

Also, maybe it's easier to fix the overlay scrollbars instead of Qt?
I'll now try to downgrade them to Natty version and check if the crash
exists.

2011-09-27 Thread Dmitry Shachnev
Overlay-scrollbar 0.1.12 installs but doesn't work (I get classic
scrollbars everywhere), and VLC doesn't crash. Anyway, I believe that
something was broken in overlay-scrollbar and can be easily reverted.

I'm adding ubuntu/overlay-scrollbar task, if I'm wrong feel free to mark
it invalid.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 573312] Re: Wrong resolution in GDM when using external monitor connected to laptop - Intel chipset

2011-09-27 Thread Moustafa Chamli
New data on the issue:

It would appear this only occurs when the system is started up with an
external monitor attached. Booting or rebooting without the external
monitor has the X server properly detect the displays and allows for a
hassle-free experience.

Upstream would need to be informed of this detection issue.

the mouse wheel. Any ideas why? I guess that qt has been patched to use
overlay-scrollbars by default, so I should blacklist vlc there as well
as (or instead of) in overlay-scrollbar.

Anyway, the chance of easily fixing this bug by disabling overlay-
scrollbar for vlc exists. I don't think this bug should be in oneiric
final.

NB, other bugs fixed by blacklisting programs in overlay-scrollbar have
had an ayatana-scrollbar task (not overlay-scrollbar) as per the
comments in the source.

Confirming, everything works like a charm with version 0.7, even with

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 741930] Re: [natty] nvidia binary packages for older cards - dependencies not met

2011-09-27 Thread Lars Ola Liavåg
I tested the tip in this link to force Unity to start:

http://askubuntu.com/questions/37629/geforce-go-7300-7400-blacklisted-
can-i-still-run-unity

It did start but the launcher was a mess. I then deactivated nvidia-96
and activated nvidia-173 in stead, and now I have Unity working with
Compiz effects. The slowness warned about in the link does not seem any
intrusive so far. I might test nvidia-current again but will probably
try running like this for a while and monitor the performance.

Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 813343] Re: nvidia drivers, second monitor covered by black

2011-09-27 Thread Clint Byrum
I just wanted to note that I no longer have the covered by black problem
in 11.10 beta2, however I still do have issues when adding/removing
monitors to TwinView. They're mostly visual corruption that go away once
the transition is over. I suspect these are different issues than the one
reported here though.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 649809] Re: the session settings manager can try starting before the login screen one exits

2011-09-27 Thread eiver
Is there any way, an ordinary user experiencing this bug could provide
enough information to resolve the problem? The bug seems random in
nature, so it must be some kind of a race condition, but still I have a
feeling it should be easy to fix (although I do not know linux/ubuntu
well enough to provide a fix).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 550625] Re: Alps touchpad is recognized but synaptics clients and scrolling do not work

2011-09-27 Thread jcat
Hi Seth,

You patch doesn't work for my new Dell Laptop, it's an XPS 15z.

When I load the dell i8k module, it reports this info about the model.

[ 297.412044] i8k: vendor=Dell Inc. , model=Dell System XPS
15Z, version=A05

It's a large touchpad with no stick, only buttons.

I get this error in dmesg:

[ 10.836407] alps.c: E6 report: 01 00 64

What information do you need from me to add support my touchapd?

Thanks in advance.

Cheers,
jcat

2011-09-27 Thread Laurence Aronberg
Thanks @Angel Garcia, that did the trick. Just in case it helps anyone,
mine was a fresh install of 11.04 not an upgrade so I followed the
instructions at http://www.ramoonus.nl/2010/05/linux-kernel-2-6-34
-installation-guide-for-ubuntu-linux-10-04/ to change the kernel - after
changing the boot order to the old kernel, the bug was gone.

What's the likelihood of getting this deb rolled (backported/PPA'd)

Thanks,

jcat: When I look up your model on Dell's website it gives a driver for
a Cypress touchpad, not ALPS. Since the E6 report doesn't match that of
an ALPS touchpad, I'm inclined to believe that your touchpad is made by
Cypress, not ALPS.

I don't have access to any hardware with a Cypress touchpad or any
protocol specifications, so it will be difficult to make a driver for
it. You can open a new bug for your hardware if you wish, but discussion
of it on this bug is off-topic.

I'm focused on getting these driver updates ready in time for the next
Ubuntu release, and I won't be backporting the changes. Nothing is
stopping someone else from backporting them to an older version and
supplying a dkms package though.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 859934] Re: screen corruption and system freeze during boot

2011-09-27 Thread Hasen el Judy
I figured out what was causing the problem,

In the past, I had edited my grub configuration `/etc/default/grub` for
smoother plymouth experience, it was like this:

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=quiet splash acpi_os_name=Linux acpi_osi=Linux
video=uvesafb:mode_option=1024x786-24,mtrr=3,scroll=ywrap
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX=quiet vga=771

I forgot where exactly I found this; it was somewhere on the internet.

I edited the file again and made it just:

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=quiet splash
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX=

And now it boots just fine.

I don't know if you will still consider this a bug/regression. But,
since I took these options somewhere from the internet, chances are,
there are quite a few people who also have these lines in their grub
configs, and they will likely experience the same problem I had.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 860933] [NEW] The Close, Minimize, and Maximize buttons disappear when the window is maximized and then un-maximized

2011-09-27 Thread Sunil K Chopra
Public bug reported:

I don't know if this is a problem with xorg. The problem is that when I
maximize a window, and then un-maximize it, the three circle buttons in
the top left corner disappear sometimes. This does not happen always.
You might need to maximize and un-maximize a few times to see it. When
the buttons disappear, their functionality remains, however. If you
click on where you expect the close button should have been, the window
will close.

I will try to gather some screenshots.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 754000] Re: 3 finger touch interferes with 3 finger click (middle click)

2011-09-27 Thread Chase Douglas
In Unity a design decision has been made that three and four finger
gestures are reserved for the shell. For example, any time you put three
touches down on a multitouch trackpad you can start draging the window
around (assuming it's not full screen). The only way to implement this
behavior is to mask out the three-touch-tap behavior that X synaptics
supports.

I'm sorry to say that they only reason three touch tapping works in
unity 2D is because it doesn't yet implement the window moving gesture.

There's no reason this can't be made configurable. I can envision an
option turns off specific gestures in Unity. If you disable the window
move gesture you'll get three touch tap to paste functionality back. If
someone in the community wants to offer a patch to do this we would be
happy to review it.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 754000] Re: 3 finger touch interferes with 3 finger click (middle click)

2011-09-27 Thread Ian Turner
Chase,

Just a suggestion: If this is the future, it might be best to set the
two finger tap to middle click by default, at least on systems with
physical buttons. The rationale on this is that right-clicks are easy to
do through other mechanisms (right button or menu key), while middle-
clicks are more difficult to synthesize on most PC hardware.

Cheers,

2011-09-27 Thread Cas
The full desktop corruption has been resolved however the corruption of
the launcher bar is still occurring which I think returns this bug to
the original reported problem.

I would now rate this bug as low/medium as you can mouse over the
launcher causing a refresh and the corruption to disappear.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 754000] Re: 3 finger touch interferes with 3 finger click (middle click)

2011-09-27 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Sigh.

Clicking is not a gesture. That is my opinion. And three-finger clicks
can be made to co-exist with all the current gestures in Unity as my fix
(above) shows.

The fix I proposed in June is nearly perfect. Certainly it seems perfect
on Mac hardware and just needs some minor tweaking to avoid breaking
some Dells etc.

It would be very unfortunate for Ubuntu and Unity if we abandoned this.
We probably don't want to give people more reasons to not use Unity.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 754000] Re: 3 finger touch interferes with 3 finger click (middle click)

2011-09-27 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Also, something I noticed earlier this year in Unity that is probably
still true:

Unity treats touch as a gesture. touch probably should never be a
gesture. Responding to tap and drag is enough to control the
appearance of the grab handles.

If you remove Unity's sensitivity to all initial touch events then
some of the perceived ambiguity in this argument should be resolved.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 754000] Re: 3 finger touch interferes with 3 finger click (middle click)

2011-09-27 Thread Chase Douglas
Hi Ian,

I understand the sentiment, but such a change would cause untold number
of complaints from users who are used to two-tap being right click :).
It would be a huge behavior change, so I don't think we would do it.

BTW, I think you may be able to change the mapping of number of touches
to actions by fiddling with the xinput props for the trackpad device.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 463067] Re: Dell D600 doesn't see mouse button1 up events

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: ubiquity

Installing from a USB stick made by usb-creator on a Hardy Heron computer
from

http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/kubuntu/daily-live/20091028.5/karmic-desktop-i386.iso

Installing on a Dell Latitude D600, with a trackpad. The installer
sometimes does not detect button1-up events on GUI buttons right away.
When I press and release button1, the GUI button stays in its depressed
visual state until I touch the trackpad again. If keep a finger on the
trackpad and press and release button1, the GUI stay depressed until I
move the cursor. (I do not have to move the cursor off the GUI button
-- a tiny movement within the borders of the button is enough.)

This happened frequently on the first few installer screens, but buttons
  behaved normally on later screens.

- In retrospect, this happened on earlier ISO releases as well. I thought
- I was imagining things...
