[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 813343] Re: nvidia drivers, second monitor covered by black

2011-10-24 Thread psypher
HI Axel,

Tried unity 2d, still get the Could not apply the stored configuration
for monitors error on boot with missing theme, then as before I click
OK and then the desktop is draw with correct theme yet nautilus is still
missing theme. Also not sure how unity 2d acts on a dual screen, never
tried before. But expo mode is only on the primary screen and you can't
drag apps to other desktops at all, is that by design?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 874237] Re: Emulate3Buttons option does not work anymore to enable emulation of a middle button

2011-10-24 Thread Joe Cai
It turns out that this is a gnome 3 configuration problem.

[quote from http://who-t.blogspot.com/2011/04/gnome-30-middle-mouse-
button-emulation.html ]

GNOME 3.0 has a gsettings key to also trigger this behaviour on a per-
user basis (see bug 633863). The default value is off (false). Settings
applied from the desktop environment overwrite xorg.conf(.d) settings,
so to get middle button emulation in GNOME simply toggle the gsettings
key and don't worry about xorg.conf(.d). The command to toggle the key
is:

$ gsettings set org.gnome.settings-daemon.peripherals.mouse \
 middle-button-enabled true

[/quote]

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 781384] Re: active/inactive window decorations are wrong, do not update (only fglrx)

2011-10-24 Thread Thomas Howard
I am experiencing this bug to some extent too in 11.10, and also
experienced it to a greater extent in 11.04.

In 11.10 it seems to mainly affect Firefox, Nautilus and Clementine, and
seems to take longer before the bug afflicts Pidgin windows.

I am using a Radeon 6790 card if it helps at all, and I cannot use the open
source drivers in any recent Linux distribution I have tried because I get this

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 813343] Re: nvidia drivers, second monitor covered by black

2011-10-24 Thread Axel Pospischil
Hi psypher,

as said in #30 I don't write to the xorg-file wiht nvidia settings (what one
might do), only use a minimal.
In very very old days, some monitors need to have appropriate modelines: see
https://wiki.blue-it.org/Xserver_Issues#Modline_generator

@#35: Did you install the package unity-desktop. Probably there are some
packages missing? What theme is missing?: Lightdm or nautilus? Did you use
any ppa's in former times? Or any other window-managers like emerald or so?
Expo I cannot try in the moment, because I am on xfce4 in the moment - sorry
(and I would open another bug on this).

@#36: other bug.

Greets Axel

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 880853] [NEW] nouveau/nv don't work with NVidia 9400GT

2011-10-24 Thread mniess
Public bug reported:

Description:Ubuntu 11.10
Release:11.10

xserver-xorg: 1:7.6+7ubuntu7

lspci -nn | grep VGA
02:00.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: nVidia Corporation G96 [GeForce 9400
GT] [10de:0641] (rev a1)

When booting Ubuntu after a fresh install for the first time, the screen
just goes to black after GRUB. According to a bugreport at redhat
(https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=480393) this is because of
x-orgs auto-detection. When nvidias vendor-code is seen, xorg will
default to nv/nouveau. Neither work on my machine.

My workaround was booting from a live-cd, chrooting into the ubuntu-
install and installing nvidia-current(-updates) from there.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 876561] Re: Egalax touchscreen on Exopc Slate stops working

2011-10-24 Thread Ville Ranki
Hi,

I cannot reproduce the bug by pressing with two fingers on the screen.
Pressing 2 or more fingers on desktop don't do anything except normal
selection. The touchscreen seems to stop working at random.

I am willing to help debug the problem if any of the developers need
more information.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 880882] [NEW] X starts with garbled screen, restarting X from cli fixes

2011-10-24 Thread Jan
Public bug reported:

I am running an Asus eeePC 1101HA with a (dreaded) Poulsbo video card. I
upgraded from Natty to Oneric, and X wouldn't start anymore. Under Natty
I ran X with fbdev driver since the default driver would break
suspend/resume. I had applied the fix from
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/HardwareSupportComponentsVideoCardsPoulsboAlternatives
to get 1366x768 resolution.

After upgrading and trying all kinds of things to fix this, the situation is as
follows:
- Apparently, under kernel 3.0.0.12, the 'correct' way to run X is with fbdev,
which is accellerated by a kernel module of either 'poulsbo' or 'psb_gfx'. I
have re-enabled the fix from
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/HardwareSupportComponentsVideoCardsPoulsboAlternatives
to get native resulution, under either vesa or fbdev. (If there is some other
driver comination I should try, please tell me.) Without this workaround I can
only get 640x480 resolution.
- I can start and run under the VESA driver, everything works fine but screen
updates in video are sloow.
- I can run the system with the fbdev driver enabled. If I do this X starts up
with a garbled screen. How it is garbled depends on the exact settings I'm
using, but one common way is that each row of pixels is shifted a dozen pixels
or so compared to the row above it.

I have tried this last fbdev setup with several settings:
- I have tried blacklisting 'poulsbo' and/or 'psb_gfx' in all four combinations
in /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf. If poulsbo gets loaded, X starts up with a
garbled screen, but if I log into a console and kill X it restarts correctly.
If poulsbo is blacklisted, X is garbled and stays garbled if I kill it.
Disabling psb_gfx did not have any visible results.
- I have played a bit with the GRUB_GFXPAYLOAD_LINUX variable in
/etc/default/grub. Different settings result in different ways the screen gets
garbled, but otherwise there's no difference. Some settings of this variable
cause even the text console to be garbled.

I have also tried starting the system with the 2.6.38 kernel, which was
the default before the upgrade, but to no avail.

I suspect the problem is with the video mode transition from GRUB to X
which somehow fails, while the transition to/from textmode works. (note:
after startup, switching to a text console and back to X without
restarting X does not fix the problem)

I tried running a fresh Oneric from live usb, but it resulted in bug
#880580. For completeness, after upgrade I also had a problem with
sound, but that appears to be unrelated and has a workaround available
(#825709).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 880882] Re: X starts with garbled screen, restarting X from cli fixes

2011-10-24 Thread Jan
Additional info: I was not entirely correct about the poulsbo/psb_gfx
blacklisting combinations. Poulsbo blacklisted and psb_gfx enabled
results in a garbled screen that isn't even fixed by restarting X. All
other combinations result in a garbled X that can be fixed by restarting
X. There is a visible speed difference from enabling poulsbo.

A third bug I had after upgrading to oneric is #880865, resume failure
under kernel 3.0.0, but that appears to be unrelated.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 875687] Re: Screen brightness settings not saved

2011-10-24 Thread T J Schemkes
I have the same problem with Oneiric for every user on my laptop.
But i have found a disgusting way to pass the problem for the time being.
Put the next statement in the Startup Applications Preferences for every user:
'pkexec /usr/lib/gnome-settings-daemon/gsd-backlight-helper --set-brightness X'
where X is a number from 0 till 7, 0 is low and 7 is high brightness.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 873482] Re: elantech: Touchpad always reports 3 finger tap as 1 finger tap

2011-10-24 Thread Jason Conti
bwat47: I've noticed the same thing, but I'm not certain it is related
to the xorg driver. Last time it happened, I was looking at it in xev,
and getting weird data. Certain taps would send a flood of events with
weird button values between 4 and 6. I killed the x server and input-
events was reporting strange values on triple tap as well (usually
something like a double tap, triple tap followed by 5 or 7 position
updates all followed by syns and then the double/triple release).
Restarting the x server didn't help, which is what makes me think it
isn't related.

If I manage to reproduce it (happened after a suspend here too), I'll
attach the logs.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 92599] Re: Incorrect (low/stuttering) refresh rate with NVIDIA driver

2011-10-24 Thread Owen Williams
Deactivating Bailer and increasing the refresh rate do improve, but
don't completely fix the problems. glxgears is smoother, but still
jerks noticeably from time to time and gets much smoother as the window
size increases. And moving and resizing windows is still much, much
slower than with compiz 0.8.6.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 873482] Re: elantech: Touchpad always reports 3 finger tap as 1 finger tap

2011-10-24 Thread bwat47
Any logs I could submit? I'm not really an expert on what logs are what
and where to find them. I seem to be able to reproduce this almost
everytime I suspend. Just tested it a few seconds ago. Booted up my
laptop, middle click worked fine. Closed the lid, waited for suspend,
opened it. No more middle click, it reverted back to 3 finger tap acting
as a left click (the same behavior I got before using your patch)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 881003] [NEW] Windows on same workspace flicker when switched between

2011-10-24 Thread WarriorIng64
Public bug reported:

This is an Ubuntu 11.10 64-bit machine upgraded from Ubuntu 11.04. When
switching between two windows on the same workspace under Unity (not
sure if it does the same under GNOME Shell yet), either through clicking
or using Alt+Tab, windows flicker during the switch. This issue did not
exist under 11.04, and is quite distracting.

Attached is a screen recording illustrating the issue. (Please ignore
the tearing, that is a separate issue filed as bug #713594.)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 881004] [NEW] windows moving is too slow on fglrx

2011-10-24 Thread adrenochrome
Public bug reported:

i'm using a fresh install of ubuntu 11.10, i left the default unity
i installed catalyst11.9(fglrx8.892) using the buildpkgdpkg -i fgrlx*.deb
procedure, no additionnal xorg ppa

i enabled windows deformation through compiz settings manager, windows moving
is slow, too slow (no many seconds lag like i've seen on some videos)
a lot of micro-lags
the fact is that it was perfectly smooth on ubuntu 11.04

i didnt notice any special error in logs

as advised on some posts, i tried to disable the no windows tearing
from catalyst, disabled vsync and forced refresh to 60hz in ccsm, but it
dont improve anything

how to get back the smoothness ?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 881004] Re: windows moving is too slow on fglrx

2011-10-24 Thread adrenochrome
maybe it has some importance : with ubuntu 11.04 i was using gnome classic
session and completely removed unity
but unfortunately it seems to be much more difficult and and less usable in
11.10, so i reinstalled all and stayed with default unity session
if the advice is to switch to gnome and try to tweak it until usable i'm gonna
merrily jump on this solution

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 688403] Re: Xinerama secondary screen still exists when unplugging cable

2011-10-24 Thread Fabian Alenius
apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected oneiric running-unity ubuntu

** Description changed:

I have an external monitor attached with an HDMI cable to my laptop. I
use Xinerama to use both monitors simultaneously. This works well,
except for when I unplug the HDMI cable. I would expect xorg to reset
itself to single screen mode. It blinks black as if it tries to reset,
but the secondary screen still exists as it's possible to drag the mouse
pointer out of the screen and applications that were on the secondary
screen become invisible and are impossible to move. It would be nice if
xorg could reset itself into single screen mode and automatically move
all applications that resided on the secondary screen to the primary one
  when I unplug the cable.

  Using Ubuntu 10.10 with fglrx.

  xorg:
Installed: 1:7.5+6ubuntu3
Candidate: 1:7.5+6ubuntu3

  fglrx:
Installed: 2:8.780-0ubuntu2
Candidate: 2:8.780-0ubuntu2

  What you expected to happen:
That the secondary screen be disabled when unplugging HDMI cable in Xinerama.

  What happened instead:
The secondary screen remained active even though I couldn't see it and
applications that were on that screen became invisible and impossible to move.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 688403] Re: Xinerama secondary screen still exists when unplugging cable

2011-10-24 Thread Fabian Alenius
Hi, I didn't read your comment properly and collected with Xinerama
enabled with which monitor hotplugging still doesn't work as you said.
:-) Unfortunately the only multi display alternative I can get to work
without Xinerama is the cloning so I can't really test if the
hotplugging works.

Should perhaps be a bit more specific, when I enable Multi-Display
desktop and restart the laptop screen goes completely white while the
external monitor works.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 881046] [NEW] Panning in a virtual monitor is not possible after upgrade to Ubuntu 11.10

2011-10-24 Thread Ernesto Torresin
Public bug reported:

When I go for a virtual monitor by issuing command xrandr --output
LVDS1 --fb 1600x1200 --panning 1600x1200 on a monitor working at
resolution 1024x768 (as I did before upgrading from Ubuntu 11.04 to
Ubuntu 11.10), the WM bars on top and left side of the screen (in Unity)
look like extending to the new area, but I cannot move the pointer to
the new extra area and so I cannot pan. As far as I understood by
reading around, this *could* be a bug in package xorg-server rather
than in xrandr and *could* be related to the boundaries set for cursor
position.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 838577] Re: GNOME Shell display problems with FGLRX

2011-10-24 Thread Sprocketme2
I've followed Steffen's instructions, including installing normal fglrx,
then downloading the ATI driver from
http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/linux/Pages/radeon_linux.aspx,
purching fglrx and fglrx-amdcccle then installing the new drivers. After
a reboot I come to blank screen. I can boot recovery just fine, but even
then im getting mediocre performance. glxgears is around 2500fps in
gnome-shell but is at about 1fps in gnome-classic. Gnome-shell is
generally choppier too. Window transitions and moving windows is not
smooth.

Is there a solution to the blank screen? Is my performance normal for
the current state of drivers?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 772873] Re: Vino does not work with compositing

2011-10-24 Thread Craig Hansen
I have the same problem with vino-server in an oneiric system with a ATI
Video (ATI Technologies Inc RS880 [Radeon HD 4250]), but not running the
fglrx proprietary driver. What I get is a session with sporadic updates
- I can get the screen updated by wiping a terminal window around the
screen. So I can confirm that this is not just an fglrx-specific bug.

Unbelievable. The problem is that the contrast is set to 0 (black

everything is fine. So the bug is invalid

I've finally found a way to reproduce the corruption I experience

it is on that site that triggers it, but

I've had corruption on Natty 64 bit and Maverick 64 bit too and am
currently running lucid 31 bit:
