[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 882841] Re: Mouse pointer becomes invisible in most windows

2011-10-29 Thread Steve Brack
** Description changed:

PC running 11.10. Problem started as soon as upgrade was complete.
+
+ The mouse pointer is invisible everywhere on screen. Sometimes, when the
+ region it's in requires a different pointer than the default arrow
+ (pointing finger, I-beam, etc), it will be visible, and on-screen
+ objects always react to the presence of the mouse pointer, even when it
+ can't be seen.
+
+ The mouse pointer has disappeared ever since I upgraded to Ubuntu 11.10.
+ It's very frustrating that every attempt at using the mouse to navigate
+ within this website or within the windowed environment is a matter of
+ educated guesswork, since I can't see where I'm pointing the mouse.
+
+ To my mind, describing the mouse pointer as invisible captures the
+ elements of the problem in one word. It's not that it doesn't exist,
+ for, like the invisible man, it still interacts with its surroundings,
+ but, also like the invisible man, it can no longer be seen. The only
+ time it becomes visible is when the mouse pointer changes from the arrow
+ to another form.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 820881] Re: [i945] Heavy screen and font corruption on GMA950

2011-10-29 Thread Sitsofe Wheeler
zermerica:
Hmm! How long did it take for the corruption to appear back when you had
512Mbytes of RAM (was it after 12 hours as in the original bug report)?
Additionally, now you have the extra memory, can you reliably reproduce the
error by setting mem=512M kernel boot parameter temporarily?

tabbernuk:
Were you able to reproduce this error using a LiveCD or does it only occur on
an installed system?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 882955] Re: Xorg restart and goes back to lightdm after entering keyring's passoword

2011-10-29 Thread Nicoco
This bug only seems to occur when I type the keyring's password really fast at
login.
It looks like I've found a fix : waiting for a few seconds before entering it.
I'm not really happy about it because :
- I still don't know which app is requesting to open the keyring
- Until I've typed the password, I can't move any window (but I can launch
firefox)
I'd be happy to give out more information to have this fixed.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 881004] Re: windows moving is too slow on fglrx

2011-10-29 Thread adrenochrome
i think i managed to get rid of the problem (i didnt notice any
component update related to the problem)

disabled no tearing in catalyst, set perf refresh to never except if app
specify it
in ccsm : opengl:sync disabled, composite:autodetect refresh off,
composite:freq 60
reboot

the problem was still here

ccsm: composite:freq 120
reboot

no more sluggish window moving, it was smooth but there was a lot of tearing
so i decided to reenable settings one by one with reboots between

ccsm: composite:freq 60
reboot - ok

catalyst perf refresh: always
reboot- ok

catalyst no tearing on
reboot - ok

windows moving is still smooth and there's no annoying tearing
my conclusion is that all these settings react not as expected when
used/switched all together. The order seems to really have an importance.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 661248] Re: PCI Race Condition with COMPAL FL90

2011-10-29 Thread Legwan
Can confirm that above method helps with Compal FL90 / GF 8600M GS
In my case device is called
/sys/bus/pci/devices/\:01\:00.0/remove

Before executing binary installer reports no supported hardware
After executing it goes fine and I even managed to kickstart xorg (i.e. got
working unity with 3D)

Unfortunately it seems to have no effect on ubuntu drivers, only binary
drivers from nvidia.com

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 585564] Re: Xephyr keyboard layout broken

2011-10-29 Thread bq
For me , the option -keybd ephyr,,xkbmodel=evdev was not enough.
Try this :

1) see what are full options using command setxkbmap -query

$ setxkbmap -query
rules: evdev
model: evdev
layout: us

2) using this option for Xephyr:

-keybd ephyr,,,xkbmodel=evdev,xkblayout=us,xkbrules=evdev

and all is working now.
NOTE : i am not using ssh connection, but starting a nested KDE session as
another local user.
Full script:

#!/bin/bash

sudo -u another_user date || exit 0

killall Xephyr

Xephyr -ac -screen 1420x820 -keybd
ephyr,,,xkbmodel=evdev,xkblayout=us,xkbrules=evdev :3 2 /dev/null
sleep 1

export DISPLAY=:3
sudo -u another_user -H bash -c /usr/bin/dbus-launch /usr/bin/startkde
---

BTW: the ctrl+shift to greb keys to Xephyr window does not work for me,
but ctrl+alt+shift does

for startup in the Unity dash. And Startup Applications Preferences
came up. Added a call to it there, and it might as well have been set
in xorg.conf!

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 883319] [NEW] xrandr --scale 1.2x1.2 restricts area in which mouse moves

2011-10-29 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

in kubuntu (and ubuntu) 11.04 i used to enlarge my laptop screen like so

xrandr --output LVDS1 --scale 1.2x1.2

this worked fine: the desktop scaled to larger size correctly .
After upgrading to 11.10, in kde the desktop still resizes
correctly, but the movement of the mouse is restricted to an area equal to
the screen size *before* issuing the scaling command. .. Ie let's say
the mode is 1366x768 and I do xrandr --output LVDS1 --scale 1.2x1.2 the
screen size changes to 1640x922 but the mouse moves in an area the size of
1366x768 in the top left of the screen and then 'hits a wall' preventing
it to move. I also tried ubuntu 11.10 with gnome: here the screen also
resizes, but I have the same issue with the mouse, and the extended area
of the desktop is black...

Some time ago there was a similar issue, which was resolved later. Now it seems
to be back...

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 882143] Re: Separate x-screens option does not result in a desktop manager on the 2nd screen

2011-10-29 Thread Achim Behrens
This Bug affects me, too.

Using a Dell Vostro 1500 with nvidia 8600GTM with an external Monitor
via VGA wth nvidia-current.

Used to have 2 seperate X Screens on Lucid before with gnome2.
Twinview works on both Screens, but with seperate x-screens options i either
get a white screen or the wallpaper but no panel or dash. The Mouse can move
over to the external Desktop but just shows a X like in low grafics mode.

I tried my old lucids xorg.conf where the setup worked, but its no difference.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 822098] Re: [i965gm] GPU lockup render.IPEHR: 0x78010004 - Playing GL game (mesa?)

2011-10-29 Thread Michael
Since the last comment, I have attempted to lock up the system in the
same manner originally described in this bug. The screen does not go
black and lock up and require a restart as before. Before, about one
out of two times on the lock ups the screen would go black and no signal
would appear to go to the external monitor I was using or the laptop
screen itself and require a restart. I believe the lockups I was
referencing in the last comment, may have been an issue associated to
the game itself or a hardware overheating issue because the screen no
longer goes blank but the game itself slows down and crashes. But,
unlike before, I have not had to restart the system on the last few
attempts to cause the original problem.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 763005] Re: Compiz's Sync to Vblank makes display stutter/slow with some drivers (like fglrx)

2011-10-29 Thread Aaron Mayse
Is anyone else still having this problem? I'm using fglrx on a Radeon HD
4670, and dragging windows around still only happens at 1 fps.

Of course, I'm also having numerous other problems, like compiz crashing
every time I maximize my browser window, and CCSM will randomly crash
the window decorator or even all of compiz, so it might be a problem
unique to me.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 820881] Re: [i945] Heavy screen and font corruption on GMA950

2011-10-29 Thread zemerica
SoW - it varied in timing but I don't think I ever made it 12 hours - 2
hours max I'd say... sometimes almost immediately - but it would always
be when I was maxing my mem-usage

I'm pretty new to this ... I tried rebooting, holding shift to enter the
grub loader editing it by adding a line set mem=512M but that didn't
seem to take, according to my system monitor which still registers 2.5G
- I'd be more than happy to try again, but would you be willing to give
me a bit more specific instruction as how to do it, I'd be grateful :) ?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 878454] Re: --scale and --panning options do not resize the mouse area accordingly

2011-10-29 Thread hoolabaloooo
yup, same for me on Oneiric 64 bit, e.g. intel mobile graphics.

same behaviour shows up both in unity and gnome shell, no difference at
all.

iirc, in one of the latest updates for 11.04 the problem went away (*on
11.04*) and I was able to pan as I needed, opposed to what was
happening on fedora etc. Therefore seems a regression to me.

please fix this soon, it's quite important for small displays (and a
need on the job...)

thanks

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 875504] Re: terrible screen flicker in 11.10

2011-10-29 Thread brittyboi
On my Desktop PC I am running 11.10 x64 with a AMD Radeon HD 6950
graphics card with Gallium 0.4 on AMD Cayman drivers, and I do not get
any flicker at all.

Although, on my AMD Radeon HD mobility 4200 series card on my laptop, I
get horrible flicker while doing most things in Unity and Gnome-Shell,
and that is while running the standard Gallium 0.4 drivers.

Is there something drastically different in the drivers between these
two different cards?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 755791] Re: [RS690M] No 3d acceleration in Radeon X1200 with new Gallium r300 / 3d drivers in 11.04

2011-10-29 Thread André Oliva
There is a patch in freedesktop.org bug tracker, that seems to fix the
problem. If someone wants to try it, it's there, but please be careful.

** Description changed:

The bug is active also in Freedesktop.org :
  https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=37679

+ [edit]
+ The bug seems to be fixed with a patch provided by Freedesktop.org team.
+ [/edit]

  [edit]
This bug is caused by interrupts. They're not working. The solution for this
problem is:
  - To see if Ubuntu 10.04 (where all things worked well) used UMS instead of
KMS.
  - If Lucid used KMS, to bisect the kernel to see what change caused the
problem.

  [/edit]

  [edit]
  The bug description, updated:

The symptoms: No 3d acceleration (glxgears shows a black window, Unity
doesn't start), *but* no fallback into the software-rendering mode
(glxinfo reports that the 3d acceleration is working)

The hardware: ATI Radeon RS690M X1200 series

The version of Ubuntu: Ubuntu 11.04 (final release) [and Maverick also].
The behavior was also observed in Debian and Fedora 15, as noted below
(so it seems not to be Ubuntu-specific).

The version of xserver-xorg-video-ati: 1:6.14.0-0ubuntu4 (default in
Natty). Same problems with the xorg-edgers PPA in Natty Beta2.

The software affected: Compiz (doesn't start because requires direct
rendering); then, Unity (just the wallpaper or black screen and the
mouse pointer). glxgears, Stellarium, Blender, Adobe Flash Player in
fullscreen mode and Visual module of Python work if software rendering
is forced (but of course they run very very slow).

The history of the bug: all worked as expected (out of the box) in
10.04, but in 10.10 the problems started. The workaround was to disable
KMS, but now, in Maverick, since the new Gallium driver doesn't have a
non-KMS mode, that workaround is not available. This issue was reported
when using 11.04 Beta 1 and Beta 2, then, in the descriptions below
there are some strange things (xorg crash during startup, software
rendering fallback), that don't occur any more. The issue is just the
  description given here.

The exceptions: **sometimes** (??) the 3d acceleration does work as
expected, but at the moment there is no way for us to know when it will
work or not [help please!]. And, sometimes the 3d acceleration work but
is so slow that it seems to be actually software rendering.

The workarounds: `vblank_mode=0 glxgears` (or other program) gives
correct 3d accelerated output. `export vblank_mode=0` also allows to
start Compiz and 3d acceleration works after running that. That is just
a workaround and the problem is not solved yet.

  [/edit]
  Binary package hint: xorg

I installed Ubuntu 11.04 Beta 1, and I'm not able to run Unity and
Compiz, because I have no 3d acceleration. However, I was able to run
Compiz once, the next time I booted, I don't know why, Compiz doesn't
work. After several reboots, I see the following:

  1. Sometimes (?), I have 3d acceleration via software rendering. When I run
`glxinfo | grep render` I get:
  direct rendering: Yes
  OpenGL renderer string: Software Rasterizer
  GL_NV_conditional_render, GL_NV_depth_clamp, GL_NV_fragment_program,
And if I run `compiz --replace`, I get the following error:

  Backend : gconf
  Integration : true
  Profile : default

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 556782] Re: [rs690m] Graphics corruption with ati x1200

2011-10-29 Thread Anthony Godshall
SOLVED

Hi again. Sorry about the last two comments. I was in a carpool on
CA-17 when I wrote them. I think. Anyway, I tried many of the above on
my LT3103u and the only one that worked for me was passing nomodeset
(not any of the modeset=0 variants) on the kernel commandline (first
tested interactively by catching grub in the act of booting, and then by
putting it in the /boot/grub/grub.cfg via /etc/default/grub and update-
grub).

For completeness, and to help out others who come across this via web
search, here's the chip in question:

$ lspci|grep VGA
01:05.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RS690M [Radeon X1200
Series]

And I am in fact running 32 bit Lucid on this 64 bit machine, not 31 bit
;-)

Now that this issue is solved, I'm ready to bump the distro back up a
notch (I'd downgraded to try to get this resolved)

Oh, and for the record, it made no difference on this machine whether I
was an upgraded user or a newly created user.

Tony

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 875504] Re: terrible screen flicker in 11.10

2011-10-29 Thread Britt Yazel
In Unity this issue mostly occurs when viewing different lenses. The
whole 'lens' feature creates a black tear that streches the span of the
screen and is very ugly. Also, when dragging a window to the top to use
the snap-to-fullscreen feature it has HORRIBLE tearing. Unity tearing
is far worse than Gnome-Shell tearing, but both are present.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 875504] Re: terrible screen flicker in 11.10

2011-10-29 Thread Britt Yazel
I have noticed on my HD mobility 4200 Series card and with the open
sourced drivers, most of the screen flicker in Gnome Shell happens when
there is a windows shown and you mouse to the bottom right hand corner
to see notifications. The sides of whatever window is open will flicker
black when the shadow gradient appears at the bottom of the screen
