[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 755841] Re: [sandybridge] video tearing

2011-11-01 Thread Daniel van Vugt
If indeed the problem this bug describes is the error (WW) intel(0): first get
vblank counter failed: Invalid argument
then I think my fix for bug 763005 will solve that. Because part of the fix for
bug 763005 is to remove the need for compiz to get the vblank counter at all.

If this bug doesn't become a duplicate of bug 763005, maybe it can be
considered a duplicate of the more general tearing bug 880707 which
affects any graphics chip and has an exact known cause.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 884609] [NEW] Workspace change does not activate focus

2011-11-01 Thread Constantine
Public bug reported:

I'm using all workspaces with maximized applications on each. After
change workspace, active window does not receive focus. Moreover, it
can't get it even i've clicked on it (e.g. url history in firefox
doesn't opened, context menu doesn't selectable). I should explicitly
alt-tab to this window to fix this problem.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 847967] Re: A minimized window 'remains' behind on the desktop if /apps/compiz-1/plugins/unityshell/screen0/options/show_minimized_windows is set to true

2011-11-01 Thread entonjackson
i still have this problem, when having several windows of one program open and
one of them is minimized.
double click on the application in the launcher shows them all up, but the
minimized one is invisible.
in ccsm i've set up fixed launcher and smallest icon size, if this helps.
any suggestions?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 813343] Re: nvidia drivers, second monitor covered by black

2011-11-01 Thread Russ Adams
I've been experiencing these same problems with my MacBook Pro 5.1
system. Based on all of your comments, this is my work around.

1. Login from LDM in Unity.
2. Add a link to /usr/bin/unity on your Desktop.
3. Open Nvidia Settings
4. Enable second monitor in Twin View mode.
5. It will fail leaving you with only one monitor. That's OK.
6. Enable second monitor in Twin View mode a second time.
7. You'll have a dual monitor desktop, but Unity will crash.
8. Double Click on unity icon on your desktop.
9. Nautilus will ask you how you want to load the file. Click 'Run'.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 14644] Re: Runlevel 2 starting GUI

2011-11-01 Thread Adam Conrad
As stated many years ago, this is a question of local policy. Some
users want the same runlevel definitions as RedHat isn't a critical bug
in Debian or Ubuntu, it's a local decision for the admin to make, should
they want to. The argument that you need a text-only runlevel for
maintenance is readily solved by single-user.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 14644] Re: Runlevel 2 starting GUI

2011-11-01 Thread James E. LaBarre
Not quite. Single-user mode is useless if you need network
connectivuty. That's the purpose of it, disabling all devices and
getting to a bare running command prompt. If you instead want to work
on the system *WITH* the network enabled, then a text-only runlevel is
needed. Also, if you want to leave the system headless and only run GUI
applications remotely, it's foolish to have a GUI running at the
console.

But as I had pointed out YEARS ago when first describing this bug; if
you have hardware that will need some custom tweaking, you will need
network connectivity **AND** no GUI running. I know, with the headlong
lemming-rush towards Wayland, the idea that someone may need to work on
a text-only system is completely alien.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 883673] [NEW] X started by lightdm renders X11 screen ugly/unusable

2011-11-01 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Hi,

after upgrading my system to oneiric, the X11 desktop is ugly and almost
unusable, because the fonts and characters are stretched horizontally
and blurred.

I guess that the reason is a wrong/odd dpi value, because xdpyinfo says

screen #0:
  dimensions:1600x1200 pixels (473x302 millimeters)
  resolution:86x101 dots per inch

I would prefer to simply give X a better dpi value as a command line argument,
but as far as I can see that damned lightdm does not allow to configure any
command line parameters for X (which I consider as broken design).

Please tell me how oneiric is supposed to deal with that problem.

You have been subscribed to a public bug:

I used ubuntu-bug xorg to report this, just in case there is something
useful it in. I'm not sure of the root cause.

The only thing I can go off of is this message in my dmesg at the time of the
crash:

= [-4]
[322186.774015] ecryptfs_readpage: Error decrypting page; rc = [-4]

instead ecryptfs being verbose when it sees something else wrong.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 884897] [NEW] Touch input generates RawMotion history with incorrect valuators

2011-11-01 Thread Dwayne Litzenberger
Public bug reported:

When using a touchscreen, xserver generates incorrect RawMotion events
when some of the axis values have not changed since the last event.

This is for evdev with absolute positioning.

The bug is *not* present in the Debian xserver-xorg-core (2:1.7.7-13)
package.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 366728] Re: LD_LIBRARY_PATH not loading from .profile nor /etc/environment

2011-11-01 Thread Yannick Duchêne
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 47958 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/47958

Same bug for me. I may define LD_LIBRARY_PATH from .bashrc or .zshrc, it
will be OK, but only from a console, and won't be if I run an
application from a *.desktop file as an example. So I wanted to define
it in .profile, but what ever I do, it seems to be cleared
unconditionally after interpretation of .profile. There is ldconfig, but
unfortunately, this acts system wide, and I won't add a system wide
entry for a library path which is relevant only for a single user.

This bug should be solved, and it seems it is still not solved.

My coworker and I who are running the same model of machine are

It started recently for me within the last two weeks, definitely after
some round of updates. Which ones I'm not certain of.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 859474] Re: Dragging with touchpad unusable

2011-11-01 Thread Dirk Mcbratney
For me, under Gnome Shell with an Elantech trackpad, doubling
SingleTapTimeout fixed the issue, and the setting persists over suspend
and resume (many Synclient settings don't.) Trackpad is completely
usable again (aside from the unrelated bug regarding three-finger taps
for Elantech on the 3.0 kernel.) 320 should be the default setting for
this value.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 877438] Re: Unity compiz plugin makes display slow on multi-screen

2011-11-01 Thread Wouter Geraedts
I've got the same problem on a nVidia Corporation GF104 [GeForce GTX
460] (rev a1). After cloning the screen the system gets unusable; Compiz
gets a relatively high load (~0.9 on a 6-core). Load gets lower after a
while, system becomes usable again. Some Compiz plugins (desktop-zoom
for example) do not work after this.

so yeah, it's not *exactly* the same hardware as per the bug report but
it is exactly the same symptom and probably similar enough causes... For
full confirmation someone would have to test on the exact system...
mine's 910 vs. 950 GMA 82915 vs. 82945 - anyhow, it is what it is and
I hope it is still helpful :)

Mine usually started to corrupt within 20 mins but varied with what I
was doing - java game opening multiple tabs, etc... If I wasn't doing
much (surfing, checking e-mail) it would go much longer

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 871344] Re: Jockey cannot install FGLRX (AMD Graphics Driver)

2011-11-01 Thread Daniel van Vugt
I believe the post-release version of fglrx is the package called
fglrx-updates in Ubuntu 11.10.

In Ubuntu 11.10 presently,
fglrx is version 2:8.881-0ubuntu4
fglrx-updates is version 2:8.881-0ubuntu6

So you're unlikely to see any difference right now. Perhaps later when
fglrx-updates gets upgraded to a higher version than fglrx, but it
hasn't yet...

Hmm, the old quirk table in the intel X driver appears to be long gone,
so the trivial fix for this is no longer possible.

So, rather than quirk it on the X side, I think what we need to do is
add a quirk to the kernel for this hardware.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 562005] Re: Backlight controls of laptops with NVIDIA NVS and Quadro FX 880M GPUs no longer function while using proprietary drivers

2011-11-01 Thread Tom Gelinas
The nvidiabl driver now detects ThinkPad T510s with model 4313CTO. This
will not allow gnome-power-manager to control the backlight, but at
least the keys will worksort of. With autodetected values,
brightness can be turned down all the way, but can only be set to a
proper maximum by switching to a VT and turning the brightness down a
notch. If anyone would like to play around with backlight values, the
instructions below will get them set up. nvidiabl's source can be
modified to work with other ThinkPad models as well.

ACPI backlight control must be set to vendor, the thinkpad_acpi module's
brightness controls must be disabled and the brightness keys must be
bound using acpi events.

ACPI backlight controls can be set to vendor by setting
'GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=acpi_backlight=vendor' in
/etc/default/grub and then running update-grub.

thinkpad_acpi's brightness controls can be disabled by creating
/etc/modprobe.d/thinkpad_acpi.conf and adding the line options
thinkpad_acpi brightness_enable=0.

nvidiabl source can be obtained from
https://github.com/guillaumezin/nvidiabl , then installed by dkms. The
scripts nvidia_backlight_down.sh and nvidia_backlight_up.sh should
be copied from the scripts folder to /etc/acpi.

Then the brightness keys can be bound to those scripts by
creating/filling the following files:

/etc/acpi/events/lenovo-4313cto-brightness-down
event=video LCD0 0087
action=/etc/acpi/nvidia_backlight_down.sh

/etc/acpi/events/lenovo-4313cto-brightness-up
event=video LCD0 0086
action=/etc/acpi/nvidia_backlight_up.sh

ACPI events were determined using acpi_listen.

Alternately, there are .deb packages that install nvidiabl via dkms available
from https://github.com/guillaumezin/nvidiabl/downloads . Currently only
4313CTO models have backlight support by default, but it's only a matter of
adding PCI IDs and some basic detection stuff. That stuff can be passed when
the module is loaded, check the docs for details.
