[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 318325] Re: [X1100] flickering after resume from ram

2011-11-02 Thread Chris
NB: With Debian Squeeze, I was able to cure this flicker on my Aspire
5100 by doing the following (as root):

pm-suspend --quirk-s3-bios --quirk-s3-mode --quirk-vbe-post --quirk-
vbemode-restore --quirk-vbestate-restore --quirk-test --store-quirks-
as-lkw

The parameters up to --quirk-test cause the machine to suspend. When I
tap a keyboard key it comes back to the deskop without the flickering.

The --store-quirks-as-lkw parameter seems to cause the previous
parameters to be written to a database where they are found and used
again on the next suspend attempt. So now my machine suspends and
resumes normally (the above commandline was needed only once).

Note that you can use the pm-suspend command to experiment with quirks.
The --quirk-test parameter was needed to make sure the pm scripts didn't
ignore the other parameters during testing.

For testing quirks, I found it useful to edit the power-management
settings to make the machine hibernate when I pushed the power button.
That made it possible to recover when the screen flickered too badly to
use the normal shutdown dialog. When the machine resumed from
hibernation, the flicker was gone and Iwas ready to test another
combination of suspend quirks.

Note that I have done a couple of other thngs which I don't think matter
(they didn't cure the problem by themselves). These are adding the
nomodeset parameter to the linux commandline, and adding some of the
same quirks to the file /usr/share/hal/fdi/information/10freedesktop/20
-video-quirk-pm-acer.fdi.

The current Debian Squeeze appears to be pretty similar to Ubuntu Lucid.
It's running Linux 2.6.32-5-686 (but with an October 2011 compile date).
I'm not sure how the two systems differ in their power management, but I
bet they're pretty close. I do not know if the tweaks I describe here
would work for Natty or Onieric.

I hope this helps somebody.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 318325] Re: [X1100] flickering after resume from ram

2011-11-02 Thread Chris
Hi Marco,

I tried your suggestion (adding nomodeset to the commandline) with
Debian Squeeze, but it didn't cure the flicker on resume.

Also tried it with an Onieric LiveCD, but it didn't solve it there
either.

Bad news...

And if so, how? I'm sort of lacking in the know-how on this. Thank you.

Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 770559] Re: Ubuntu fails to boot with nVidia proprietary driver

2011-11-02 Thread Rufus
Thanks a lot for the link. I installed beta driver 290.03. Now the Zotac
Geforce 9300 H-E mainboard runs perfectly again, for the first time since
Maverick Meerkat.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 800140] Re: radeon: [drm:drm_mode_getfb] *ERROR* invalid framebuffer id

This bug (or similar) also seems to affect RV516 based radeon cards.
Logs in with Unity 3D, but dock and tray icons not visible.
Unity 2D works fine.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 883803] Re: [fglrx] ASIC hang happened

2011-11-02 Thread Mike Fisher
Since reporting this problem I looked more closely at syslog. It looks
like the ASIC hang was caused by my attemts to restart the system. In
particular, it happens after "SysRq : SAK".

The real problem is a few lines earlier:

[fglrx:firegl_lock_free] *ERROR* lock was not held by 12! (*lock=0x8001)
   [fglrx:firegl_unlock] *ERROR* firegl_lock_free failed!

Possibly related to bug 118605 ?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 838577] Re: GNOME Shell display problems with FGLRX

2011-11-02 Thread Aldo Nogueira
I noticed the top bar gets fixed when I installed cantarell fonts. Something
happens when a font package is installed that fixes most of Gnome Shell. The
tooltips are still distorted, though.
Using fglrx from 11.10 repositories.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 868400] Re: Synaptics touchpad stops working

2011-11-02 Thread Thucydides411
I've attached an example of what happens when the pointer unfreezes. The
video is a bit faster than real life, but notice how the cursor grabs a
window, shakes it around and then maximizes it, before returning control
to the user. When this starts happening, it occurs very often - up to a
few times a minute - making it nearly impossible to get any work done.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 855124] Re: XRANDR operations very slow unless (phantom) HDMI1 disabled

2011-11-02 Thread Bryce Harrington
Jason Warner has hardware that reproduces this bug (see #884348).

It does not look like there's much else to be done on the X side, so I'm
closing out the last X task. I think it's just a matter of waiting on
this to work its way through kernel team processes.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 855124] Re: XRANDR operations very slow unless (phantom) HDMI1 disabled

2011-11-02 Thread Bryce Harrington
Btw, the upstream discussion indicates that the patch has been tested on
intel but maybe needs wider testing to ensure it doesn't cause erroneous
behavior on radeon and nouveau drm drivers. Thus, it would be
reasonable for kernel team to block on seeing these patches appear in
the upstream kernel tree, but will leave that to their discretion.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 855124] Re: XRANDR operations very slow unless (phantom) HDMI1 disabled

2011-11-02 Thread Bryce Harrington
Patches to fix this issue are available on the upstream bug. The final
proposed patches on intel-gfx@ are in this thread:

  http://lists.freedesktop.org/archives/intel-
gfx/2011-October/012504.html

Pre-built kernels are here:

  http://people.canonical.com/~ogasawara/fdo41059/comment31/
  http://people.canonical.com/~ogasawara/fdo41059/comment34/

The next step is to get this on the kernel team's todo list to
incorporate the precise kernel, and do the sru for oneiric.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 883877] Re: no HDMI output on HP pavilion dv6 (6250)

2011-11-02 Thread madbiologist
It looks like this laptop has hybrid graphics, ie. an integrated Intel
"Ironlake" GPU on the "Arrandale" Core i3 M380 CPU and a discrete AMD
GPU (possibly a Radeon HD6370M?). The HDMI port is probably connected
to the AMD GPU.

There is not much support for this configuration under Ubuntu, Fedora,
OpenSUSE or any other version of Linux. However, you can try the
vga_switcheroo feature in the open-source drivers - see
http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=Nzk0OQ and

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 525477] Re: xrandr should support rotating mouse with screen

2011-11-02 Thread Aapo Rantalainen
I'm the author of synaptics+xrandr -patch. I have got many mails from
users who think my patch adds value for their touchpad.

I know this patch is not correct (TM) solution for problem. E.g It
affects touchpad but not Trackpoint. So the issue should not be fixed on
level of touchpad, but lower level. But e.g. there are settings for
Wacoom (Interactive Pen Displays and Tablets) to turn it sideway, so
with wacom somebody have made same hackish workaround and, seems to me,
it is widely accepted.

Patch is discussed on upstream mailinglist:
http://comments.gmane.org/gmane.comp.freedesktop.xorg.devel/20034
As I write there, I do not have enough skill (knowledge of Xorg) to write it
correctly.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 525477] Re: xrandr should support rotating mouse with screen

I can reproduce in natty too, with an eee-pc.

The good news is that the patch in the ppa: https://launchpad.net/~aapo-

problem has, at least for the user of a synapctics touchpad, a solution.
