[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 868400] Re: Synaptics touchpad stops working

2011-12-05 Thread sven
I am a little surprised this prominent bug seems so quiet.

To emphasize my last post:

SOLUTION!

for this bug is:

lightdm starts a syndaemon instance which MUST be terminated upon
session startup.

Otherwise two syndaemon instances compete for disabling/enabling touchpad, and
will eventually get out of sync.
This was simply overlooked when switching from gdm to lightdm as login manager.

PLEASE FIX.

Regards
Sven

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 900111] Re: X server on Matrox g550 is all black (no output)

2011-12-05 Thread Tormod Volden
Please run apport-collect 900111 to attach more information. It would
be nice to also have the xrandr --verbose output from the blind
session.

BTW, I saw this in the log. Do you have the proprietary nvidia OpenGL libraries
installed?
[ 81272.142] (EE) Failed to initialize GLX extension (Compatible NVIDIA X
driver not found)

BTW2: The misleading lspci information would need to be rectified at
http://pciids.sourceforge.net/
I might look into this some day, since I also have some other IDs to fix up. Is
there any model identifier on the card itself, or in the BIOS messages?

2011-12-05 Thread Tormod Volden
Please file a separate bug for the memory size detection. The driver
does all kinds of trickery to figure out the VRAM size, and this should
be possible to get to work also in your case.

[Problem]
Easily reproduced gpu hang when playing video game. Regression seen starting
after upgrading to the 3.0.0 kernel.

[Original Report]
Have GPU lockups every time I play Spring RTS with the Zero-K mod. Usually
about 15-20 minutes into the game. This did not occur before upgrading to
Oneiric. Have not tried the game with other mods yet or different options. But
seems to be a general GPU problem because I also seem to experience major
issues when I turn on GPU rendering in the Chrome browser

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 888872] Re: Unity 3D desktop crashes in Oneiric using ATI Mobility Radeon X1600

2011-12-05 Thread Omer Akram
if its a crash you should look into /var/crash directory and look for
the file including the name 'compiz' in it, double click it and follow
the onscreen instructions to report a new crash report which hopefully
will have logs about the crash and could possible turn out to be a
duplicate of an already reported crash report.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 892544] Re: Unity slow after resume from suspend

2011-12-05 Thread Mario
Hi Daniel

I tried your ppa compiz and unity and unity works much better even after
the a suspend resume, everything runs smoother, but not as well as in
11.04.

I made some test with glxspheres64 and in Unity i get half the FPS
than Gnome Shell or Unity 2D.

Unity -- 32 FPS
Gnome Shell y Unity 2D -- 60 FPS

Thanks for your work

No, there are no plans to include the driver updates in the kernels for
11.10 due to the risk associated with so large a change. The new driver
support has already been applied to the kernel for 12.04.

 Hi @seth,

First off, thanks for the patch, it works like a charm on my DELL

I just acquired a Dell Precision M6400. The default Mouse and Touchpad
settings don't give me the possibility to deactivate the touchapd
alltogether, so I installed your patch from comment #492. But it does
not seem to install correctly: no gpointing-device-settings binary is
 available...

Steven: The changes I worked on only add support for a subset of Dell
hardware, albeit a fairly large subset. If you have a model that isn't
supported, I'd suggest you check and see if anyone has opened a bug
specific to your model already, and if not file a new bug.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 900417] [NEW] fn+f3 does not disable touchpad (Ubuntu 11.10 install on a laptop Dell Ispiron 17R)

2011-12-05 Thread Martin C
Public bug reported:

I have a new installation of Ubuntu 11.10 on a Dell Inspiron 17r Laptop, and the
FN+F3 key combination does not work.

Expected: pressing Fn+f3 should disable the touchpad
Outcome: Although a transparent pop-up shows up on the top right hand corner
notifying user that the touchpad is disabled, the touchpad is still in
operation.
Older distros had option under mouse/pointer device option disable touch pad
when typing, but this is not available with 11.10.
Fix: Making it operational Fn+F3, adding an option under mouse/pointing device
to
disable touchpad when typing, allowing configuration of Fn+F? keys
Relates to: ALPS driver, Synaptics, xorg config???

I tried many things to fix this problem: Installing Synoptics, defining custom
key
combinations... unsuccessful

syndaemon -i 0.5 executed just fine.

gconftool-2 --set --type boolean
/desktop/gnome/peripherals/touchpad/touchpad_enabled false
... this did not do anything. TouchPad works just fine, and it is not disabled
even when I type (... and my chubby hands keep activating and clicking touchpad
when I type). It might be because 11.10 distro does not have
/desktop/gnome/peripherals/touchpad/touchpad_enabled and I don't know where
else to find the device.

I did reinstalled xserver-xorg-input-synaptics package but it did not
help, neither installing xserver-xorg-input-synaptics-dev package helped

I saw xserver-xorg-input-synaptics:i386 package, but the synaptic
package manager was unable to install (dependencies etc).

This might be a clue: when I run
$ synclient -l
Couldn't find synaptics properties. No synaptics driver loaded?

obviouslly, some driver is loaded, since the trackpad works just fine,
except disabling it is a problem (I could not find what command fn+f3
calls), so it is a mystery as for what package is used.

system- preferemces-Mouse and trackpad (via Unity) in 11.10 distro
does not even have the option of trackpad configuration.

here is the closest I got to the driver info:
$ xinput list

⎜ ↳ Virtual core XTEST pointer id=4 [slave pointer (2)]
⎜ ↳ ImPS/2 ALPS GlidePoint id=12 [slave pointer (2)]

apport-collect fails: I get all the way through a web session, where I
loig into launchpad openid via lynx, authorize apport to collect the
data, and then get this:

No REFERER Header

Launchpad requires a REFERER header to perform this action. There is no
REFERER header present. This can be caused by configuring your browser
   to block REFERER headers.

No clue how to fix that by hand, so I try apport-bugs instead. That also
fails, here's the full session:

FWIW, I'm not running an ubuntu kernel, for two reasons:

2) Ubuntu has never-ever done RAID correctly, and so I've had to run a custom
kernel just to get RAID to work.

Yes, I have proprietary nvidia drivers installed. I explained this above.
Physically removing the nvidia card does not alter the behaviour. I am
planning on eventually having a multi-head setup, running both the matrox and
the nvidia at the same time; first step is to get mga to work. (nvidia works
fine)

Will post xrandr output shortly; I've looked at this before, it looked
fine.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 608917] Re: Please put Provides fields mimicking Debian packages

2011-12-05 Thread Daniel Hahler
The boinc package in Debian introduces two new packages to pull in libraries
for GPU computation.
The first one would need to be satisfied by nvidia-graphics-drivers /
nvidia-current.
To avoid any delta in this regard, a Provides: would be required here.

  Package: boinc-nvidia-cuda
  Depends: ${misc:Depends}, boinc, libcuda1, libcuda1-ia32 [amd64], ia32-libs
[amd64]

  Package: boinc-amd-opencl
  Depends: ${misc:Depends}, boinc, fglrx-driver, amd-libopencl1

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 890438]

2011-12-05 Thread BakLAN
Well, if you google multiple complains on forums/maillist/distro bugzillas -
that would be quite strong argument.
I can google it only in Ukrainian (there is no point to google it in Eglish or
Russian). You know, it's not enough and I probably doesn't find anything.
I am saying that the problem is not significant enough (considering the
 frequency of complains)
Frequency of complains? How many users use three keyboard layout in whole
world? How many of them use Linux and KDE? (Later I show why DE is matter.) How
many of three keyboard layouts Linux and KDE users can understand where is the
problem? Not many. I think frequency word is not right word in this case.
Yes, exactly that. Because the person who contributed it wanted it that way -
to be sure that he gets the layout he wants, not just next layout.
Probably he use just two keyboard layouts. Then he not see difference between
keyboard layouts switch order. Then he get layout he wants anyway. That most
likely what happened with Ctrl+Alt and Shift+Alt part of code in xkb.
I do not have issues with that.
Keyboard indicator in KDE can switch keyboard layouts (sequential order) by
click. In result keyboard shortcut and keyboard layout indicator follow
different orders. So if you use Gnome (or Unity) keyboard layout order is
doesn't matter for you. So then congratulations - you not have issues with that!
If you find people interested in new xkb option - we can continue this
 discussion.
You mean developers?
(that have priority because it is there already). I hope you understand that
I need some serious reasons to break the way things worked for years (and
there is no right way - it is a matter of taste). I am not saying that your
request does not make sense - I am just asking for some evidence.
I see your point but try to understand mine point too. I habit to use
Shift+Alt. There is nice feature in KDE that allow to switch keyboard layout
just by click to keyboard indicator, no one other DE have this cool feature. No
other OS except Linux with KDE have this cool feature. But it's very, very
uncomfortable (I repeat very very uncomfortable in this ticket many times
because it REALLY very very uncomfortable) to use it with current xkb
behaviour, and there is no any way to adjust current xkb behaviour. It's like
some night horrible.
And now you talk about this pointless (seriously, what the point to switch
keyboard layouts in back order?) behaviour that have priority because it is
there already and the way things worked for years (sounds like use [...]
because it is there already and that things workder for years; put into ...
something like Windows, MS Office, etc.) Now you ask me about some things that
almost impossible in such situation. But there is no one reason to switch
keyboard layouts in back order in first place, isn't it?
But that's the best idea I can come up with. Otherwise I'd have to trust
every request for changes, which I am not going to do for obvious reasons. If
you have better idea - please tell me, I would be quite interested.
I doesn't have better idea. I even doesn't have enought score to create
discussion in Talks (in fact I even doesn't have account on LOR, but if I
create one - than I will have not enough score to create discussion in Talks;
there is no point to create discussion in General or Desktop because in Talks
much more peoples). I just want to report this bug. Isn't that is bug when
keyboard shortcut (I want to note - default shortcut in many distributions) and
keyboard indicator switch keyboard layouts in different order? In fact this is
the bug. But you doesn't want to admit it. Why? Probably because you are XKC
mainter and Gnome keyboard layout switch mainter (I doesn't forget anything?)
so in result you doesn't know about problems what KDE users have with xkb or
xkc. So I talk with you about this problem that KDE users who use three
keyboard layouts have with xkb. Please tell me, I still need to find a proof of
very simple fact - it's uncomfortable when xkb and keyboard layout indicator
switch keyboard layouts in different order?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 890438]

2011-12-05 Thread Sergey V. Udaltsov
I can google it only in Ukrainian (there is no point to google it in Eglish or
Russian). You know, it's not enough and I probably doesn't find anything.
Why not Russian? And, you know, even if the issue is not important for
English-speaking people, sometimes people discuss it in English. Like we are
doing it here, right now.

many of three keyboard layouts Linux and KDE users can understand where is the
problem? Not many. I think frequency word is not right word in this case.
I am most willing to find out some different way of the reality check.

Probably he use just two keyboard layouts. Then he not see difference between
keyboard layouts switch order. Then he get layout he wants anyway. That most
likely what happened with Ctrl+Alt and Shift+Alt part of code in xkb.
Yes, these options look like particularly tied to 2-group configs. Which
statistically would be much more frequent than 3-group and 4-group configs (no
proof here, just expectations and common sense). That is why I accepted those
options that are not usable for 3 and 4 groups.

If you find people interested in new xkb option - we can continue this
  discussion.
 You mean developers?
Not necessarily. Users, expressing their interest - would be a good starting
point.

I see your point but try to understand mine point too. I habit to use
Shift+Alt. There is nice feature in KDE that allow to switch keyboard layout
just by click to keyboard indicator, no one other DE have this cool feature.
GNOME 2 had that for years! IIRC GNOME3 (gnome-shell) has it as well.

almost impossible in such situation. But there is no one reason to switch
keyboard layouts in back order in first place, isn't it?
Well, I really do not know. For some reason the option was created that way.
Why? God knows (it was long ago). People are used to it.

very simple fact - it's uncomfortable when xkb and keyboard layout indicator
switch keyboard layouts in different order?
I totally understand that it is uncomfortable for you. But that cannot be
considered as a reason to change anything. What I want is something that would
convince me that enough people want that change.

And would you please refrain from starting KDE vs GNOME show right
here. xkc is the desktop agnostic project (and I have good working
relations with KDE kbd maintainer FWIW).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 890438]

2011-12-05 Thread James H. Cloos Jr.
But there is no one reason to switch keyboard layouts in back order
 in first place, isn't it?

As someone who loads extra layouts just in case, I find the reverse
order switching to be invaluable.

I use lctrl+rctlr; it may be easier to deal with the reverse order
in such cases than with the shift+alt type of combination. But I
almost always “go back the way I came” when switching between my
layouts.

I would hate to loose that capability.

I would not, however, object to having to change my config to explicitly
specify that I prefer the non-commutable behaviour, should commutable
become the default.

similar bug report here: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-
bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=546836 where it appears to be a regression since
the old XFree86 server. I have a feeling some of these regressions boil
down to mode calculation being done differently. Maybe the card is
driving your monitor out of range? Did you already try other screen
resolutions and refresh frequencies? You can use xrandr --output
default --mode 0xXX where you can find XX in the xrandr --verbose
listing. Does your screen come back when switching to a virtual console?

Oh, just saw Forcing xorg.conf to use a lower resolution does not solve
problem now. Still, please cycle through all the xrandr modes.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 881004] Re: windows moving is too slow on fglrx

2011-12-05 Thread pazuzuthewise
On further testing, it seems better to disable No tearing in catalyst control
center. With it activated, playback of video files compressed with x264 codec
was extremely choppy, it couldn't render fast motion cursively (in vlc and
totem).
The windows also seem to be a little more responsive when moving them.

Sadly, not always, we have capacity to triage bugs. To be able to forward it to
a developer, it needs to be well-documented. If you still can reproduce this

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 900308] [NEW] Unity crashes after being suspended for 48hrs

2011-12-05 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

After being suspended for a weekend (Friday pm to Monday am - about
60hrs) Unity/compiz (or X?) reliably crash upon resume, dropping me to
the lightdm greeter. As a result whatever apps I had on my desktop are
gone - it is as if I had restarted or logged out. Shorter periods of
sleep work fine; the machine resumes normally after being suspended for
1hr.

I believe this is a regression that appeared a couple weeks after 11.10
(I regularly pull from oneiric-proposed) but I don't have an exact date.

I haven't found any indication of a crash in any system logs, and there is
nothing in /var/crash/.
I do see this at the end of /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old:
[121316.041] ddxSigGiveUp: Closing log

In the attached logs, I put the machine to sleep on Dec 2 at 17:05 and
woke it up on Dec 5 at 08:53.

To reproduce:
1) Suspend the machine
2) Unplug it so it's running on battery power
3) Don't touch the machine for a few days (Friday night--Monday morning, for
example)
4) Plug the machine back in and wake it up

Actual results:
1) After the screen comes on, I see the desktop background and a few flashing
white rectangles that correspond to windows on the screen (same size/position).
2) X seems to crash/quit; I see a console with text (no screenshot available,
sorry)
3) Light starts and I'm prompted to login

Expected results:
Machine resumes to the desktop

Hardware is a Macbook Pro 3,1 w/ NVidia graphics. OS is Ubuntu 11.10 AMD64. I
upgraded to nvidia-current-updates 285.05.09-0ubuntu0.1, but that did not solve

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 787587] Re: Cannot change screen resolution on Dell Duo in Natty

2011-12-05 Thread Martin Hammer
@Kevin
That's a real shame; given recent announcements regarding Ubuntu on
tablet/phone/TV, this device would make a perfect showcase of what is _already_
possible on the tablet form factor today.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 900615] [NEW] Machine will not suspend after a second monitor is plugged in

2011-12-05 Thread Mitch Golden
Public bug reported:

I have a System76 Gazelle Pro with a 1.5 GB nVidia GeForce GTX 560M
graphics card. Suspend works properly when the driver is in normal use,
but if an external monitor is connected, it will fail to suspend. The
machine hangs, and I powered off. This problem persists even if the
external monitor is no longer connected. This happens every time.

I do not have this problem when the nVidia driver is in use.

Running: KDE 4.7.2 on Kubuntu 4.11. with xserver-xorg-video-
