[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 972125] [NEW] Right and middle mouse button do not work on clickpad

2012-04-03 Thread Mason
Public bug reported:

On my HP Pavilion DV6 laptop, using the beta2 of Ubuntu 12.04 (off a USB
drive), the clickpad right button and middle button do not work--they report as
button 1 using xev.
These buttons both used to work back on Ubuntu 10.04 with the 2.6.32-32 kernel
(see bug #826054 for more info).
I understand that the clickpad functionality has been removed from the kernel
and added to x (xinput-synaptics), but the functionality appears to be only
partial--only 1 button works!

Since clickpad support is advertised as one of the major new features
for Precise, it would be nice if it worked correctly.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 877682] Re: [Latitude E6510 / Thinkpad W510/T510] External Video inoperative with nVidia current

2012-04-03 Thread Thomas
Thanks for helping out, Bryce. I have a very similar issue with nvidia-
graphics on a T410 (NVS 3100M chipset).

As far as I can say, the problems with the external displayport were
introduced here:

Start-Date: 2012-03-04  18:58:02
Commandline: apt-get install nvidia-current
Install: nvidia-current:amd64 (280.13-0ubuntu6), nvidia-settings:amd64
(280.13-0ubuntu2, automatic)

I'm pretty sure things worked well before.

I installed the 295.33 vanilla from Nvidia.com as I couldn't find them
within standard repositories. Though, 295.33 doesn't seem to solve the
problems, my external display connected via displayport is still not
detected in nvidia-settings. Interestingly something is happening when I
hit 'Detect' within nvidia-settings as my Dell U2711 changes the status
indicator color from Standby/yellow to blue for a short time...

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 968218] Re: ssh x11 forwarding precise to oneiric causes glibc malloc(): memory corruption

2012-04-03 Thread Robert Hutton
Hi Robert,

Great stuff! I did the following on the Oneiric machine:

sudo apt-add-repository ppa:sarvatt/green
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade

The following packages will be upgraded:
  aptdaemon aptdaemon-data libxi6 libxi6-dbg python-aptdaemon
  python-aptdaemon-gtk python-aptdaemon.gtk3widgets
  python-aptdaemon.gtkwidgets

sudo shutdown -r now

And now SSH X11 forwarding to that box from my desktop running Precise
and my VirtualBox VM running Precise both work fine, at least for that
list of applications above. :)

I hope this makes it into Oneiric before Precise is released; I suspect
there'll be a whole lot more people hitting this bug if it's still there
after release date. ;)

Thanks,

Rob

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 626321]

2012-04-03 Thread Luis Alvarado
I finished checking the following games in fullscreen using Ubuntu 11.10
with Unity, Kubuntu 11.10 (KDE) and Ubuntu 11.10 with Gnome3:

+ Trine2
+ Half-Life 2 (PLus Ep1, Ep2 and TF2)
+ World of Goo
+ PLants Vs Zombies
+ Skyrim
+ Left4Dead
+ Left4Dead2
+ Prince of Persia (Sands of Time)
+ Prince of Persia (Warrior Within)
+ Prince of Persia (Forgotten Throne)
+ GTA San Andreas
+ GTA Vice City
+ Spore
+ Hitman: Blood Money
+ Penumbra: Overture
+ Amnesia: The Dark Descent
+ Warcraft 3 Frozen Throne

In ALL cases the problem is the same for all 3 desktops (KDE, Unity,
Gnome3)

If you open the game in fullscreen (In this case my resolution is
1680x1050, but the fullscreen was tested in 1280x1024, 1024x768 and
1360x768) after exiting the game, 100% of the time the resolution of the
system will turn into the resolution of the game. So if Ubuntu has
1680x1050 and you open a game in fullscreen with a resolution of
1024x768, after exiting the game Ubuntu will have the resolution the
game has.

This was tested using an Nvidia 9500 card, Nvidia 440 card and an Intel
945. Did not have an Ati with me but I am guessing it will have the same
result.

I spend about a week and half testing this to maybe find some workaround
that could fix the problem. No luck. I also tested this on Windows 7 and
this does not happen. You can exit the game and the resolution will be
the correct one for the desktop.

Tried changing the Windows Version in Wine from XP, to 7, to 2003 and
even tested Vista. Same result.

Games were tested with OpenGL if they had the option or DirectX. Same
result.

The monitor I used was a Soneview 32' 16:10 TV 1080p just in case this
has some influence.

There was also no output error. For what Wine could know after exiting
the game, everything was perfect. But of course the resolution after
exiting was not.

I also remember having this issue from 1.1.x, 1.2.x, 1.3.x and right now
with the official 1.4.

This pretty much sums everything up. If affects any program that uses
fullscreen or has the ability to use fullscreen. If any of the games I
have mentioned are used in a windows resolution (less than the actual
desktop resolution) then no problem shows up. It only reveals itself in
fullscreen.

Also like to add that, for some games that change the gamma, after
exiting, the desktop apart from taking the games resolution, it also
takes its gamma. It may also be taking anything else that was setup in
the game.

It's all very interesting but this bug is WONTFIX, as it's an issue in
X.org server ( https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=14255 ).
Unfortunately X.org developers just do not care - but you still can
summon a petition, create some fund, collect money and hire someone who
will hack this feature.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 883319]

2012-04-03 Thread Chris Bagwell
I use xrandr for scaling to make a small netbook screen able to display
apps that don't fit in 1024x600 and noticed this regression over the
last year in 1.11. I finally decided to look closer since 1.12 didn't
seem to fix the issue and came across this report.

I looked at the revert commit to get idea of area that could possibly be
fixed and it seems like crtc_bounds() is probably a function that should
be returning a value related to panning/scaling.

I traced were xrandr output is querying the panning/scaling values it
displays and looks like comes from ProcRRGetCrtcInfo() and that function
makes use of RRCrtcGetScanoutSize() to scaling width/height to correct
size.  Panning uses rrGetPanning().

To test the idea, I modified crtc_bounds to handle scaling case by
adding ProcRRGetCrtcInfo() call. It does seem to work and I've not
noticed a negative in limitted testing.

I patched a source RPM so I can't offer a real patch right now but here
is my modified version of function to get an idea:

static void
crtc_bounds(RRCrtcPtr crtc, int *left, int *right, int *top, int *bottom)
{
int width, height;
RRCrtcGetScanoutSize (crtc, width, height);

*left = crtc-x;
*top = crtc-y;

switch (crtc-rotation) {
case RR_Rotate_0:
case RR_Rotate_180:
default:
   *right = crtc-x + width;
   *bottom = crtc-y + height;
   return;
case RR_Rotate_90:
case RR_Rotate_270:
   *right = crtc-x + height;
   *bottom = crtc-y + width;
   return;
}
}

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 883319]

2012-04-03 Thread Chris Bagwell
I reviewed the other patchwork patches just now. Patch 6209 in Comment
7 addresses panning part of issue in crtc_bounds() using same logic from
ProcRRGetCrtcInfo().

If you combine my modification from Comment 17 with the patch 6209 then
you'll get solution for both scaling and panning.

Not sure its the right solution and it seems a little excessive to
compute each X/Y movement... but I hope it helps move us along to final
solution.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 855124]

2012-04-03 Thread sean finney
Sorry for the delay in follow-up:

Yes, the patch when cherry-picked into a recentish mainline kernel shows
noticable improvement. Subjectively, it still feels a little chunky
when starting up (I think the login manager and gnome 3 both seem to
issue a large number of xrandr requests), but night and day compared to
the previous succession of stalls.

w.r.t. bug 29536? I can't say whether it's a dupe or not.  i
specifically wasn't getting the periodic stalls every 10-30s. But
perhaps the other reporter had something that was doing xrandr requests
with that frequency whereas for me it was only during log-in.

Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 970632] Re: ATI Video

2012-04-03 Thread rjdaggett
I have a cd for the last lts, compiz ran under that. Isn't there a command
that would report this. I had effects set to extra before the upgrade. I'll
snap a screen shot today and attach it.

 you're not running unity-3d, since your hw doesn't support all the

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 972324] [NEW] server fails to start up if TMPDIR is set to something on a different filesystem from /var/lib/xkb

2012-04-03 Thread Colin Watson
Public bug reported:

If TMPDIR is set to something on a different filesystem from
/var/lib/xkb, then the X server fails to start up as follows:

  [xkb] Can't rename /tmp/tmp.qHzEh1iHUk/dsc0-build/tmpdir/fileAfodkU to
/var/lib/xkb/server-B20D7FC79C7F597315E3E501AEF10E0D866E8E92.xkm, error:
Invalid cross-device link
  (EE) XKB: Couldn't compile keymap
  (EE) XKB: Failed to load keymap. Loading default keymap instead.
  [xkb] Can't rename /tmp/tmp.qHzEh1iHUk/dsc0-build/tmpdir/fileF2rYOh to
/var/lib/xkb/server-B20D7FC79C7F597315E3E501AEF10E0D866E8E92.xkm, error:
Invalid cross-device link
  (EE) XKB: Couldn't compile keymap
  XKB: Failed to compile keymap

A simple way to reproduce this is to start a fresh schroot (preferably
with overlayfs or LVM snapshots so that you can start from scratch
trivially), make sure no /var/lib/xkb/server-*.xkm files exist, and run
'TMPDIR=/tmp xvfb-run sh'.

This is because XkbDDXCompileKeymapByNames uses tempnam(xkm_output_dir,
NULL) to create a temporary file. As documented, tempnam(3) prefers
TMPDIR over the directory argument if TMPDIR is set. Perhaps this code
should use something based on mkstemp(3) instead, which would permit
finer-grained control.

This makes it tedious to run DEP-8 test suites that require Xvfb,
because adt-run sets TMPDIR.

from Moblin.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 968571] Re: My second monitor isn't enabled by default, and Displays doesn't see it as a second monitor

2012-04-03 Thread Timo Aaltonen
What do you mean by can't save the settings? It should offer to save
the xorg.conf file. And yes it's known that with the nvidia driver the
display configurator doesn't work right, since the driver lacks support
for randr-1.2.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 970632] Re: ATI Video

2012-04-03 Thread Timo Aaltonen
Unity demands more from the hw than what your machine has, so unity with
compiz will not work. You need to either run the fallback unity-2d
(which seems to have the bug you described) or gnome classic, see
http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2012/03/gnome-classic-in-ubuntu-12-04-its-
like-nothing-ever-changed/

note that a screenshot don't necessarily show the corruption

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 972294] Re: Precise GMA500 screen resolution and flicker

2012-04-03 Thread Svante Jacobsen
All as described happened the first time i ran the Try Ubuntu. I shut
everything down and did everything exactly the same a second time to
confirm and write this bug report.

Afterwards I have tried 2 more times (also exactly the same) and the
screen resolution worked both times (nolonger an issue).

BUT - The Try/Install page is always split in the middle and the far top
of the screen keeps flickering as described (to be exact, the entire
screen is flickering with seemingly diagonal lines moving across light
purple/orange/gray areas - difficult to describe but annoying to such
degree that is affecting usability - almost as much as Unity :-).

Not it improved the performance...

It seems a shared memory issue, with 256 MB OR Auto in Bios configured
every animation stop and goes; but with 128 MB, everything works fine.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 32042] Re: OpenGL subroutine man pages missing

2012-04-03 Thread Tom Fogal
I feel this bug is miscategorized. These man pages should not come from
Mesa, for two reasons:

 . not all systems use Mesa; some systems utilize the proprietary drivers, and
they should be able to install these manpages as well.
 . Mesa is not the 'upstream' for these manpages, even if they happen to
include the documents. The standards development group in this case is Khronos.
Khronos provides a method to create these manapges.

Thus I think this should be a new, separate package which is sourced
from the Khronos documentation. Their subversion repository is:

https://cvs.khronos.org/svn/repos/ogl/trunk/ecosystem/public/sdk/docs/man

and their manpages can be generated using 'docbook2x-man -N' on each XML
file.

The Khronos documents are (mostly) considered BSD-licensed:

http://www.opengl.org/wiki/Getting_started/XML_Toolchain_and_Man_Pages#Licenses

I checked this myself, however. They are actually licensed under one of
either the SGI Free Software B license, or the Open Publication License:

  $ grep -i license *.xml |  cut -d: -f2 | sort | uniq
Free Software B License. For details, see
Free Software B License. For details, see
Silicon Graphics, Inc. This document is licensed under the SGI
Silicon Graphics, Inc. This document is licensed under the SGI
the Open Publication License, v 1.0, 8 June 1999.
the Open Publication License, v 1.0, 8 June 1999.

The former allows basically free use as long as you don't advertise with SGI
[1]. The latter is considered a viable Free Documentation License [2], [3]
[1]  http://oss.sgi.com/projects/FreeB/
[2] http://www.gnu.org/licenses/license-list.html#RealOPL
[3] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open_Publication_License

So there appears to be no issue in distributing derivative works.

Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 970632] Re: ATI Video

2012-04-03 Thread rjdaggett
I should have mentioned in the bug report this is during a gnome session.
Unity should have stayed in the Ubuntu Netbook Remix where it belongs, but
that is neither here nor there. Install media was 10.04 LTS, I run the LTS
on this machine because it is older. That is what I alluded to. Gnome ran
fine on 10.04 with compiz enabled and effects set to extra. I may have
booted unity once for testing. This is a regression. If the bug is nor
resolved I will have to go back to 10.04 to get compiz effects on gnome and
consider going upstream. The screen shot shows the issue clearly. You can
see some artifacts above the bottom bar. Below the top bar the problem is
worse.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 948234] Re: xorg intel driver returns less than 3fps in glxspheres test

2012-04-03 Thread Rocko
This looks like a duplicate of bug #944627.

It is most definitely a problem when just running the intel driver as
well as when running the nvidia driver. However, the intel driver
performs at least 20 times more slowly compared to Ubuntu 11.10 (on my
PC right now it is running over a hundred times more slowly) whereas the
nvidia driver only runs half as fast compared with 11.10.

Should bug #944627 be reported against the intel driver instead of
against compiz? It has had absolutely no attention paid to it...

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 926714] Re: continuous jerky mouse movements while using nouveau driver in 12.04

2012-04-03 Thread Joel Wright
I would question the above comment about it being fixed in kernel 3.3 -
I tried upgrading to mainline 3.3.1 and was still seeing the same
behaviour. The pauses were smaller, but still in evidence.

It's a shame, but it looks like I'll have to keep using the nvidia
binary driver for a bit longer :(

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 972024] Re: RADEONDRIGetVersion failed because of version mismatch (1.17.0 - 2.10.0)

2012-04-03 Thread Robert Hooker
x-x-v-ati in edgers built against libdrm 2.4.32 instead of 2.4.33 and it
silently dropped KMS support because it requires 2.4.33, I'll get it
fixed up ASAP and I'm sorry about the trouble!
